I have both - had the P12 for two years and the OB-6 for a week. Honestly, moving from the 12 to the OB was such a huge downgrade from a sound design point of view. I'm contstantly left wanting to do things with the OB that it SHOULD be able to do, but can't because it has such limited functionality. It has a lovely tone overall, smoother than the P12, but not by that much! If I had to pick between the two I'd keep my P12 in a heartbeat and get rid of the OB-6. This is coming from someone who really likes to design sounds from the ground up and I'm also making quite forward-thinking music, so the P12 is perfect for that as you can get some very original and organic type sounds out of it thanks to all of its modulation possibilites and its hybrid design. The P12 can also do classic but the OB beats it there by a bit. So if you're happy to sacrifice a TONNE of sound design capabilities for a slightly nicer sounding synth, then get the OB. If you want something that can do everything and allows you to do it quickly, sounds great, and will last you a lifetime of exploration, get the 12.
Wow - as an existing P12 owner looking lustfully at the P6/OB6, this post may have just saved me a few grand :-) That said, I'm still sucked in every time I demo a P6 by the immediate loveliness of the sound. I can imagine the OB6 would do the same. It definitely takes some work to find the sweet spot (sound-wise) on the P12.
Yep, you're right - after spending a bit more time with the OB, I have come to realise just how easy it is to get lush, full and organic electronic sounds out of it. Its limitations are there, yes, but considering how good its base vco's and filters are, you really don't need loads of extras (though I'd kill for a synth that had the OB's vco + vcf and the P12's modulation options, *ahem Pro2*). So yeah, ob and p12 compliment each other pretty well and I'm keeping both for a while, definitely. Funny thing is, after owning and exploring both those synths pretty deeply, I feel like the perfect synth might be the 16 voice P08 Rev 2 now, haha. After listening to its demos you can clearly hear a richness and depth to its DCO's that is kinda missing from the P12's overall tone, yet it almost matches the P12 now with it's modulation capabilities, and straight beats it when it comes to voice count - I can only imagine how good some layered patches with 8 voices might sound, heck even just 4 voices of a layered patch would be great. The added FX and poly step seq will really add to the Rev 2's creative abilities, too - I can imagine getting solid ideas for tracks going on it really quickly. I may pick up the 8 voice and forget about purchases for at least a year and just lock myself in the studio and bang out as many records as possible with those 3 synths. So yeah, don't bank that money just yet! OB is still worth getting, can't speak for the P6 because the SEM filter really dictates everything, although I'm sure it'll still be worth the investment. Money is all just made up anyways! :/
The SVF is the tits on a poly. I would buy a P12 in a second if it had either the P6 or OB6 filters. The P12 is still amazing, and I’ll prolly grab a module 2nd hand at some point. What will Dave do next? Been kinda quiet lately.
Wow! I just LOVE the patch starting at 16:10! Now I know I'm going to buy this BEAST of a synth! I think it'll complement my Moog Sub 37 and Roland FA-06 quite nicely. Thanks for the demo! You've convinced me! :)
I appreciate you actually demoing this and playing some music. I'm trying to decide if I want this synth and all i can find is long videos talking about the blah blahs and the bleep bleeps, like just play some music already. So anyway, thank you again
you know, all that digital noise bleed you can hear around the 05:50 mark can be fixed for you by DSI - it's a fault with their earlier boards. I sent my board back to them for a replacement within the first couple weeks of getting it, so it was all covered under the first years warranty. The noise still exists on the newer board they sent me but it's nowhere near as bad.
i can tell the exact same story :) the problem for me is: as good and interesting most of the sounds in this video are: the aliasing is so dominant that it`s impossible for me to blend it out. i brought mine back to the store on the same day i bought it. they gave me another unit: same problem. then dave sent me a new mainboard and evertything was good
I do not like digital/hybris syntehsizers. But the more I listen to this demo I may consider it to sound very analog despite having it´s digital oscillators. It´s sounds very warm and powerfull. I prefer to work with analog synthesizer, but this synthesizer is amazing, further I think that it sounds much better than the Prophet x, despite that the Prophet x have sampled sounds beside it´s digital oscillators. The Prophet 12 sounds warmer than the Prophet x and have exactly the sounds I have looking for.
Hybrid synthesizers are really nice to have around as a compliment to analog sounds. Analog, for all its strengths, can only do so much. A lot of music was improved by hybrid designs, from the Emulator II, to the PPG Wave, or the Prophet VS. The Prophet 12 is just continuing along those lines, only with a modern sensibility and expansiveness unimaginable when digital synthesis was being developed 40 years ago.
Love the looks of the beast, fantastic specs. 5 oscilators per voice! Insane! Yet somehow I don't like the overall sound that much. The P6 and Rev2 e.g. may be less wow in spec terms yet I prefer their sound... Is it this demo perhaps? It somehow sounds pretty narrow... But that can be the youtube quality perhaps...
Really surprised how warm some of these sound. I have trouble getting that character when programming mine - I'm usually left feeling that the filter and drive is pretty harsh. In particular the sounds at 0:54, 1:20 and 2:15. 15:19 is pretty cool too. Do you have any tips?
PWM in the P12 is awesome. Close the filter a bit, add subtle amounts of Slop. Detune oscillators... Another one is to have one OSC with noise and muted, but use that osc to slightly modulate the filter frequency. Use the new unison mode with just 2 or 4 voices and increase the spread... I mean, it is never going to be a vintage analog, but I manage to get pretty phat and warm sounds with it.
Daniel Castaño did you use any external processing? I just don't find my P12 to be as present as it is in some of these sounds. E.g @ 6:30. I struggle with the 24db resonance, it comes up very quickly. Do you have any other tips?
to bad i didnt find time to dig into the P12....... its an awesome synth, the original patches are not the best, the fun starts when you make your own ones. awesome vid! greetings from Switzerland
Very nice! Thank you. 🙂🙏🏼
every time i think i've decided on the OB6 I find a Prophet 12 demo which blows me away :( forever torn.

Did you bought it?
amazing instrument, pure quality!
It's cool how this shows off how you can do a split patch, with one side having an arpeggio.
This things sounds huge, great sounds and demo !
Best P12 video yet!
10:37 is the kind of smooth soft pad that this synth is great at
Love sounds at 4:17, 9:27, 12:12 and 17:07.. thanks for posting
I accompany your videos, I admire your performances and synths parabens for your channel ...
Thank you, and KUDOS my friend!
Great demo!

It’s the digital oscillators … flexible af, but can’t compete with VCOs (or even DCOs) for ‘heft’/fullness …
Love me some P12
dope patches
Where can i purchase the Sounds :-)?
How clean do the oscillators sound? I hear quite a bit of aliasing, hope it's only the lossy UA-cam compression
Nice work! Are these patches available anywhere for sale/download?
3:46 is dope
Great P12 patches! Are these available for download? If not currently I would consider purchasing them from you.
Plz share these awesome patches or sell it! Interested in! :)
11:43 Queen :-)
Awesome patches!! Are you willing to share or sell them?
Really great! Very inspiring too. Do you have Paypal account to buy your sounds? Thanks
Please share these or put em up for sale.

I love it. sad it's way too expensive for me to buy
Man .. I wish Dave had put the pitch and mod wheels in their proper spot on the new Rev 2 like he did on this synth 😡
Love these, as well. Are you selling them.
It's such an........... Evil synth
This keyboard is a V A P O R W A V E B O A R D
