Go to bed early haha.
Bella Ramsey has solidified herself as Ellie, that little whimper after Henry shot himself was great acting
I felt the same way after that scene.
Its not perfect, but she has done the role justice
@@aerostorm_ dont know what else you could want from them, bella's that good
@@aerostorm_ that's what i thought too
It could've been better but its alright.
@@nalbis First couple episodes has some emotional scenes I don't find convincing. "Why wont you let me go home" as an example. It can be abrupt like its curated take. Other times shes spot on like the the comment above. I like her portrayal of Ellie, but I do see the flaws.
Kathleen being so far gone and saying that it didn't matter if kids died, only to be killed by a child clicker, was such amazing poetic irony.
Whoever thought of that detail, give them a raise.
Child clicker far scarier then adult clicker lol
showrunners decision. they said on the podcast. the irony of being killed by a child was exactly what they were going for...theyre kinda sick for it.
@@aigami7928 Especially since children have more sensitive hearing than adults
Well he pretty much had her brother murdered to save his kid, obviously the kid doesnt deserve to die but you cant blame her for atleast wanting henry dead.
@@aigami7928 The actress they cast to play the child clicker, Skye Belle Cowton, was absolutely amazing. She's a rhythmic gymnist and contortionist. The level of detail they put into casting even the infected, is so good!
The way the bloater ripped off Perry's head was the same death animation that happens in the game when they grab you. Awesome detail.
I especially love that they gave that death to Jeffrey Pierce. It was a nice little added touch that they gave it to someone who was previously in the game.
Melanie Lynskey was genius casting. Similar to "Yellowjackets", she's got this perfect "suburban mom" air about her and it just makes it all the more horrifying when she does something terrible. She orders a mass killing with the same tone she'd have running a PTA meeting.
And Henry's story about why she's after him explains why someone as outwardly unklikely as her is the leader of the revolutionaries; it was originally her brother and he seems to be the type of leader damn near worshipped by his followers, so when he died they transferred their loyalty to his sister.
Kathleen reminds me of Laurie from Euphoria - a seemingly quiet and unassuming cold blooded psycho killer.
All of these short-lived characters are just knocking it out the park. Heartbreaking & impactful, every episode.
Kathleen wasn’t very well written, and the directing and the performance didn’t exactly remediate the character; not terrible, but really inefficient compared to even some of the flashback stuff w/ the professors
@Dank Fartz I’m making an argument based on comparison, not citing expertise… if you compare the Indonesia scenes against Kathleen’s, Ibu Ratna’s motives and agency are so much clearer w/ less screentime and dialogue
@@hellfish2309: I agree. This is the one character that just didn’t work well.
Tess , Bill and Frank , Kathleen and Perry , Sam and Henry.
@@hellfish2309 Kathleen was only written for the show, never appeared in game. They needed a leader for the bandits and thats what she was. However they did go more in depth with Henry and Sam Characters, that actually exist within game.
Basically, it would be obvious to give more depth to the existing stable characters as opposed to whatever Kathleen was meant to be.
I have a deaf little sister, so when I watched this episode I just imagined myself being in Henry and Sam's situation by the end i was heartbroken and sad
Many would blame Ellie for Henry and Sam's tragic ending because she took it upon herself to try and save him and in turn taking away the time the brothers could have used to say their goodbyes. It could have been better for them but alas this episode just shows us how young she is. She is a literal child who, for a while now, has been told that she's special, important, the 'cure'. So she thought and hoped that her magical blood can help save her friend. Too bad that isn't how it works because why would it? That'd be too easy.
Ellie is growing up fast and is hardening from all this traumatic experience while Joel is getting attached.
I liked the double meaning of the "I'm Sorry" she wrote as well. Mostly its sorry she couldn't save him but also she promised she would stay awake with him and she didn't, it didn't cause him to turn but it's part of it. Pretty clever little subtlety to it.
Wat would Henry say? Hey Sam you will turn soon. Sorry bro, we'll be reunited later. Lol. Sam will probably be horrified more seeing Henry cry. Getting comforted by Ellie and given hope (even though false) is imo, way better.
One of the things I've always supposed from the game, and I think applies to the show too- when Joel is trying to get the gun from Henry, he's not worried for himself. Maybe he was at the beginning when Henry shot the ground in front of him, but after he shot Sam he wasn't worried about Henry shooting him. He's trying to get the gun from him to stop what he knows is coming.
Yes. His tone and expressions says it all. Henry's shock and demise felt so real.
Absolutely. I never once got the impression he was trying to get the gun out of concern for his own or Ellie's safety, but that he knew in his bones that Henry was far more likely to end himself than either of them.
In the game Henry does blame Joel immediately after he shoots Sam, while he’s pointing the gun at Joel.. but I think you’re right I think Joel still knew what was gonna happen.. to the point that he looks at the floor (at least while Henry is pointing the gun at him and Joel is telling him it’s no ones fault). I think it felt more tense in the game than in the show, but the scene hit a lot harder and felt heavier in the show imo.
@@georgia2321 It's a bit complex in the game and I think it wasn't conveyed too well by the dialogue... but in that moment when Henry says "it's all your fault" while Joel and Ellie think he's talking about them, Henry was saying it to himself... which is why he shoots himself instead of either of them.
“You killed Jesus”?😂 Such a good and devastating episode this certainly was. Poor Henry and Sam 😭
He gave up the leader of the resistance who he cared for and respected very much to save his little brother, and then having to shoot the one person he did literally everything for.
The only issue I have with the show is that it's so damn good that the episodes feel so damn short
Same! When it's ending, I'm so disappointed and thinking that's already it?
thank god they didn’t just make it a movie like they were originally planning. then it would have been another crappy video game adaptation
Same 💕
I saw on an article that the finale might only be 45 minutes or so
Felt like that with episode 2 but now I feel there paced well. Episode 3 was good but I felt it went on little too long. Episode 4 is the shortest episode but it was paced well for what they needed to show.
Sam is alone in the room when he turns in the game. I like the way the show did this scene though, It's one thing to have survivor's guilt. It's another to tell someone you'll stay awake with them...then you fall asleep.
I think a lot of people's biggest fear is either being alone/dying alone.
My interpretation of Ellie's I'm sorry at the end was that she was sorry she broke her promise to stay awake with Sam.
@@AmyL._orcgirl That’s precisely why she wrote it, that and the fact her blood didn’t save him.
Plus he's deaf. He had no idea (after he turned) that Ellie was in the room until she touched him.
It’s just as likely that Ellie did actually stay up with Sam, and went to sleep after Sam did. Sam could have turned after he fell asleep and then wasn’t aware of another person in the room due to being deaf. The “I’m sorry” could be about her blood not curing him.
@@waynedennyphoto I totally forgot that he was deaf, so I was confused as to why he didn’t attack Ellie until she touched him.
My favorite moment of this episode was how FAST the infected came running out! Also, the way Perry died from the Bloater (the big infected) is how it actually kills you in the game.
It was a little too WWZ, but if this is as saturated as it gets given the context, I think it still holds true; the threat of the infected in the game never felt like WWZ
@@hellfish2309 It reminded me more of 28 days later to be honest.
@@hellfish2309 They had to amp it up a bit. The clickers in the game are only threatening because of the lack of bullets, crappy early game weapons and the fact that you are pretty much alone against several of them. At the late stage of the game a few clickers are a joke, they throw several clickers, a few normal infected and two bloaters at you in the last infected section to create something resembling a challenge for your one character when he is properly equipped. The clickers in the game, given how slow and clumsy they are, would barely even have gotten out of that hole and taken so long doing it that this army of people would have eliminated them all easily with their automatic weapons.
When we first meet Joel after the 20-year time jump, he's closed off and he still is wearing the watch that broke the day Sarah died, which is showing that his humanity died with her. Bill has a line in the game (paraphrasing), "caring about someone is good for only one thing - getting yourself killed", and slowly without realizing it - Joel has been opening up to Ellie, who also has trust issues being that she's been an orphan her whole life. Losing Henry and Sam is a shock to Ellie and especially Joel who you can tell at the end has this face of "see? this is why you don't open yourself up to people because they die and/or can get you killed", and I think they are implying in the grave digging scene that Joel realizes he is getting himself into a "Sarah-ish" position with Ellie and a big part of who Joel is as a person is, "I can't go through that again". That dilemma is the same "strawberries vs guns" dilemma that Frank and Bill had, and highlights that it's not just the fungus that can strip away your humanity - people do that all by themselves.
This also sets up the ranch scene, my favorite part of the game as well. Straight punch to the gut. And Sam's death just giving Ellie more motivation, she feels responsible and obligated, because she's immune.
you are right but as the story progresses joel softens and ellie hardens. swapping their perspective and outlook on life. different from how they started their journey.
@@magnuscordoviz486 oh absolutely but shhhhh we haven't gotten that far yet, lol
I played the game so even though I pretty much knew what would happen I was still saying like every 10 minutes “wow they’re really twisting that knife already”. Just giving us moments like Sam and Ellie talking about the Savage Starlight comics (which I hope to god Dark Horse comics comes out with a limited series of that comic) and then playing soccer was so beautifully heartwarming.
And then we get to the scene I had been dreading throughout the episode which was the night Sam was infected. And they made it EVEN MORE heartbreaking by Ellie trying to heal Sam with his blood and failing. But what really broke me was that the very first time Henry ever kills someone, even if they’re infected, that it was his baby brother. Then ending it with Joel and Ellie burying them, and Ellie writing to Sam “I’m Sorry”.😭😭😭😭
Well, if episode 3 didn't break your heart, then this one certainly did. As a CODA, Henry's & Sam's signing was so natural - I'm glad they hired a Deaf actor to play Sam. Centering the fragility of humanity and need for connection at the heart of this show just makes it that much better.
Kathleen: *talks shit about kids*
Child Clicker: And I took that personally
1. The big boy super-infected are called Bloaters. As a gamer, I loved seeing it. Looked so good!!
2. Kathleen’s story wasn’t in the game, but Henry and Sam’s was. So it wasn’t surprising that they didn’t expand on her character.
Also, she chose to ignore the underground/infected problem, so her death was inevitable
As a mom of an 8 year old boy this episode wrecked me 😭😭
Apparently the guy who played Henry (Lamar Johnson) learned sign language, fluently, over the course of a weekend. Frickin' awesome.
The Bloater (big boy) was practically done. You can see it/him walking around in behind the scenes videos. Awesome.
I think it was actually a mix, blend between cgi and practical
My friend who has never played the game saw the bloater for the first time and said "IS THAT AN EXTRA THICC CLICKER?"
A Thiccer
@@sirshrafle1607 You sir, need a trophy for that statement 🏆
Kaaaarma that Kathleen said horrible things about children and she got got by a child zombie. Satisfying death right there. But yeah the Henry and Sam story was so upsetting. I remembered that moment from the game. Slightly different circumstances here, but it still had the some insane impact :'(
“Kids die, Henry” … kids kill, Kathy
Like, TLOU is a terrible world where people do bad stuff and those who suffer respond with even more violence and cruelty
At the beginning of the episode I felt bad about what they did to those in the Government, but after hearing what they had suffered for 20 years I could understand to some extent why they acted that way
I can even understand the hatred for Henry, but Sam and Ellie? They have nothing to do with this, killing them is completely unnecessary, yet she still want to do it just because
That's the sign of her being an evil asshole even for the standards of this world
Ellie’s whimper when Henry shoots himself really got me. So good
"The Hulk of Butter Lettuce Heads" is officially the new name of Bloaters!!!
Love how you guys put 2 videos from different perspectives game vs none experience
Ellie and Joel switch sides at the end. That was the Tess moment from episode 2. Ellie runs ahead while Joel is still waiting at the grave. Tess gave Joel a mission he wanted to fulfill as her last wish.
The relationship that Joel had with Tess was similar to Ellie and Sam. Ellie promised Sam the cure here and couldn't keep this promise. She now wants to make sure that this never happens again. As Tess said at the time "save who you can save".
Ellie really has a mission now. Indirectly get through her feelings of guilt. She wants her blood to work. Before that, she was someone who had no control over anything. Others have determined where she grows up and where she has to go now. "I didn't ask for that" were her words. Now that has changed. Now conviction plays a role and she takes control. She wants to save the world so that there are no more Sam's. And while Joel gradually finds his humanity again and lets people into his life again, Ellie loses a little more of herself and she takes the lead here in the end.
In addition, Ellie and Joel have reached a new level of connection with each other. Wordless understanding. Both wanted to save the brothers during the attack. That wasn't Joel's "don't do it Ellie" look. That was the look "I'll give you fire protection Ellie". And Ellie has absolute confidence in Joel.
There was also a little joke about the game. The moment when the sniper shot and Henry and Sam senselessly ran out of cover, only to return immediately. This is how Ellie behaved very often in the game. She was AI-controlled and she liked to do it. She ran out of cover, right in front of the enemy and then back again. 🙄
She did it so often that they had to program the game to stop going after her so much cause she just kept running out, making it impossible to keep her safe so they had to work the code to basically ignore her existence for the most part otherwise the game would be impossible cause she kept running right into the line of fire lmao

Love this episode and they nailed Henry And Sam. Can't wait for next episode and hope Tommy gets a lot of time to shine.
Cathleen, Perry, Brian from the KC resistance are all new for the show. We got nothing really from the bandits in the game in this section and not much on Henry/Sam. So this episode managed to expand both, really liked the changes the show has done.
Love seeing the reactions from you two since they’re fresh eyes with no idea of where things are going. Looking forward to the rest of the season!
The giant Butter Lettuces are called Bloaters. They're one of the more terrifying monsters in the first game and do a bit more than they do here (which Ellie actually says in episode two at one point).

the reaction to the bloater was very satisfying lol
I don’t know if it’s that the name “Henry” doesn’t evoke power or fear to me or what, but not knowing WHY Kathleen’s #1 priority is to find “Henry” and she’s always asking “Where is Henry?” felt very “who the fuck is Henry and what could he possibly have done that was such a big deal to all these people?” for me. And finding out it was just that he ratted on her brother and people really liked her brother, but really it was just her personal vengeance and nothing more? Like all these people are being asked WHERE IS HENRY before they are executed, all because her brother was killed and she’s out for revenge? Wow. Then we see Henry and he’s this sweet, gentle guy with a baby brother and I wanted to wrap a blankie around them and keep them safe right away. And in her moment of being face to face with him, it’s so clear that she could kill him right then and she would be even MORE lost, because then she would have no purpose any more. And it’s all there in her performance. SO GREAT.
It wasn't just vengeance. Michael not only was the leader of the resistance for years but a Christ like figure. Imagine Mary Magdalene went bonkers when Jesus died on the cross.
@@samlanganke1262 There is something inherently bonkers about completely ignoring the message of the guy they claim to follow and wreak murderous vengeance. She is JUST as charismatic and clearly an even more effective leader than her brother was, despite him being treated like he was infallible. So she completed his mission of overthrowing FEDRA, but her #1 priority is finding this one dude, despite the utter chaos swirling around the city.
@@bitchenboutique6953 Which is probably pretty deliberate on the writers part. I mean look at Jesus' whole 'turn the other cheek love thy neighbor' message and what Christians the world over turn it into.
And losing yourself to revenge while telling yourself it’s because you loved someone so much is definitely a theme we will see again. Love isn’t always a force for good.
I believe it was the capture and death of his brother that pushed her to take direction action in a small amount of time. Her brother was probably more calculating to try to save as many people as possible, but his loss turned her into a monster. She didn't care about collateral damage, she just wanted revenge. Also she made no hint on how she would turn Kansas City into a proper settlement, only the bearded guy (Tommy Voice Actor from the Game) pushed back or tried to use reason. He would have made A MUCH BETTER leader than Kathleen/Karen...but he was just a follower. She used her new army to exact revenge on collaborators and that's about it...
Fun fact you guys, Perry’s entire head wasn’t actually decapitates. It’s the animation from the game, the bloater puts his fingers in Perry’s mouth and decspitates from the jaw up with spinal cord leaving the bottom jaw attached to the body.
So far all the acting in this show has been top tier no stumbles anywhere the young boy that played Sam was fantastic
Going in as a non game player. .. I am in love with this show. The casting is fantastic
Loving this reaction series. Loved this episode, has so many connections to previous episodes thematically
Henry and Sam’s deaths in the game is one of the most brutal parts of the game and their story arc was one of my most anticipated moments in the show.

Episode 5 was my favorite episode so far! I was waiting for a horde of infected and we got it! I thought it was funny the bloater wasn't even trying to infect people, he was just smashing everyone to bits 😂
They are already settling up a bit the whole "when seeking out revenge better dig 2 graves, one for yourself" angle..... I like that and yet again an amazing episode

I really don't understand how someone can not sob at the end of this...
I don't know if you're aware of it but there's an official HBO The Last Of Us podcast. It is hosted by Troy Baker (actor of Joel in the games) who talks to Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin about that week's episode. It is released together with the episodes. I really enjoy your discussions and I feel like you REALLY would appreciate that podcast. Oh, and they don't spoil anything ahead in the podcast so you can listen safely.
Tara, saying what we’re all thinking about Kathleen lol😂
How ironic, Kathleen yelling "Kids die all the time" and gets killed by a clicker kid 😄
This episode was so emotional 🥲
8:08 someone on twitter pointed out this shot.
The reflection of the red strip going across Henry's eyes when he lingers there mirrors the red 'super hero' paint he put around Sam's eyes. Loving this show so much already
19:04 i almost spat out my drink, thank you Tara 🤣🤣🤣
22:23 "This has to be ripped out of a level."
Yes, that's exactly right. This was very close to how it was in the game where you, play as Joel, make your way to the tower, take out the sniper, and then shoot down on both humans and infected as you try to cover for your companions. Only they made it so much more epic in this episode than in the game.
Episode three made me tear up. This Episode made me sob into my pillow. I'm scared to see what they would do with the beginning of part two.
In the game the time with Henry & Sam follows along a pretty similar path but you spend more time with them. Joel & Ellie are avoiding raiders in the city (Pittsburgh in the game) and eventually bump into Henry & Sam coming into an apartment and they actually physically fight a bit before teaming up. Sam is a little older and not deaf, and Henry is more capable and more of a tough disciplinarian w Sam to keep him alive. They also dont have as much history with the Hunters except that they were already looking for them when Joel & Ellie get there, so they start travelling together while they're all being hunted. They work together to make it through a checkpoint (with Joel and Henry doing some simultaneous silent takedowns of raiders) and make it just outside the city. They go into a sewer at one point and cross through an underground settlement that was overrun very much like the show. When they think they're safe they get into a confrontation involving snipers down a cul de sac, and once you take out the sniper as Joel and grab his rifle you have to cover the others as they make it down the street, chased by a jeep with an MG and random raiders popping up, so that part is also somewhat similar. Eventually after travelling underground and dealing with some infected you find out Sam got bit and it ends pretty much the same.
I’m someone that’s never played the game before. Like I’ve never watched even a play through. I’m sure it’s incredible to see a game come to life for the fans. Because it’s such a good show, even from a critical standpoint. It’s just a good show with solid acting, solid writing and looks incredible
The best part is when you said this looks like a GAME mission. The whole scene is from the game even the infected and people with some changes. Joel gives cover fire in the mission too, also Sam getting bit, and even Henry shooting himself is all from the game. HBO is killing it
YESSSSS can't wait to see this reaction! Also having my heart broken again 😢
The big fellas are called Bloaters!👍 They are people who have been infected ever since the beginning of the outbreak. Their skin is layered with fungus, giving them extremely resilient armor, and they typically throw chunks of spores from their bodies at their victims.
The subtle "narp" was perfect 😆
The fact that Kathleen wanted to kill child and was later killed by a child clicker! 👏 Great show!
i love tara she’s so funny😭
That last shot has real Bill Bixby/David Banner vibes.
And GOD I love that look Joel gives Ellie when she pulls the gun *out of her pocket*!
This had one of the coolest sequences I've seen in a while. Bella is already iconic, can't wait to see Ellie's development
I think Kathleen was already a lost person before her brother died Im not sure she needed more back story. I don't think she was suppose to have a deep sympathetic back story, some people aren't that deep
Henry and Sam was so great in this episode
I'm really loving John and Tara reactions to the show. They're amazing together! 💙
"This is where Ellie becomes just as broken as Joel" 27:48

I now have 2 shows I look forward to watching each week. The Last of Us and your guy's reaction video. Thanks
There is something rather appropriate about "Did it feel good, betraying your neighbours?" as a cat walks in the background
I didn't play this game but knew about the basic story.
Beautiful story.
Kathleen's existence I felt was pretty much explained via 2 episodes. She wasn't like her brother and it tore her apart, but she had to that ruthless (not condoning but understanding) in order to lead the bandits. I suspect that this series will introduce new characters so that LOU gamers will be immersed in the apocalyptic world with characters and narrative that they can't control.
That's exactly it. She was ruthless. But to a fault. There's a fine line in leadership like this. Her brother never changed anything cause he wasn't willing to make the hard choices. She succeeded in that, the problem is she was too eager to be ruthless. With leadership, especially in a world like this, in order to actually be a good leader that protects your people you need to be willing to be ruthless, but not eager. You need to know when to stop. She didn't. She had zero reluctance to murder, even the murder of children. She was so eager to kill Henry and Sam that she recklessly endangered her people and doomed them. Being ruthless was needed to overthrow FEDRA. But then it was time to stop. Focus on rebuilding and providing for your people. Instead, she kept going, murdering everyone even slightly connected to FEDRA when she should've had them serve time and then integrate back into their society, and she kept hunting down Henry when he wasn't a threat. If he was an actual threat to their survival then yeah, make him a priority. But he wasn't. She should've let him escape and run off to be killed somewhere else by someone else while she focused on her people. Instead, she made him the main priority, focusing ALL of her resources on killing one person and his little brother and blatantly ignoring the real threat of the infected. Her priority should've been her people. Not her selfish hurt feelings.
I just wanted to say John that I'm so glad you're doing reactions to this show separate from Greg, because you like myself have never played the game and don't know what to expect. I've been watching both but his is kinda annoying because he constantly points out how this was in the game or that was part of the game or I know that from the game. Plus when big moments come, he already knows what's about to happen. Your reactions are more genuine and it's refreshing. Also, LOVE that Tara is doing these with you too. Absolutely love her.
John and Tara were perfectly in sync during this reaction! They didn’t miss a beat with the story or with each others jokes…They’re a great duo. Tara reminds me of a girl I would have been friends with in elementary school or summer camp. 😂 I get all of her references and jokes!
The sniper section is a level from the game, but honestly I think it was way cooler in the show
This might have been the best reaction I have ever seen on anything: your reaction to the infected and the bloater especially was like watching people ride a rollercoaster. I cried laughing, thank you for adding years to my life! 😂
Keeps getting better
When Henry tells Joel that he traded the lives of a couple good men for the last of the medicine to save Sam's and then told him he could see that he used to be someone's father, you can tell it really resonated with Joel. He's probably trade anything or anyone to have Sarah back.
I was waiting for this one 😂
You're not really supposed to feel bad for Kathleen dying.
I came here to say the same thing. I don’t think we were supposed to like her, but only feel an ounce of sympathy or at the very least understand the conflict between Kathleen and Henry after their monologues. Once she made those comments about it being fate for Sam to die and kids die, it was poetic justice that she was killed by a child Clicker, and we were supposed to be happy not sad at her demise.
Her blood didn't work and she failed him with her last promise, because she couldn't stay awake with him. Heartbreaking.
"Yeah! Omg! Was that a mini Chuckie, butter lettuce, Chuckie head? Woah!" @23:00
Great watching the episode and then coming here to see your reaction to it. Especially as I know you haven't played the games.
that quick little “Narp” cracked me up
That was the old guy from a quiet place part 1
Ngl I've been catching myself saying aww buddy alot now from watching videos lol
What I liked about the writing is that Joel is from Texas, and his narrative and actions are very Texan. Like so to be so uncomfortable with asking to have them join to Wichita without actually saying the words join us... it is SO Texan.. I know, I am one.. Just those details...
This is the one ep where is was glad i played the games and so somewhat emotionally prepared. but even still, god damn
I think this was my favorite episode so far (but it’s so hard to say cause I love them all)
That Hot Fuzz reference tho 😂
The episode 5 was very intense as this storyline is getting better and better along the way of Joel and Ellie's Journey.
I also thought of that "narp" line lol
