Not even 2 weeks ago, Kathleen's Militia killed all of FEDRA in Kansas City for the freedom of the people. But, her quest for revenge against Henry for getting her brother killed resulted in her, Perry, & most of her militia getting killed by this Horde of Infected. So, now there is hardly anyone left to defend the city as the Horde makes its way towards it.
A cool, but sad, touch they did is having Sam sitting on the bed looking away from Ellie. Sam is deaf, so he purposefully sat that way so he wouldn't go after Ellie if he turned, seeing as he wouldn't be able to hear her.
Damn never thought of that…

As tragic as the ending of this episode is, I love how the message of the episode is that no one wins, no matter what their actions or the reasons for them were. Michael (Kathleen’s brother) was a good and kind man his entire life, which resulted in him being betrayed, imprisoned, and murdered before he ever saw his rebellion completed. Kathleen sought vengeance for her brother’s murder, which resulted in her ignoring the infected underground, which eventually lead to the destruction of everything that she and her brother had worked to build (and ironically, she was killed by a child clicker moments after trying to kill children). Finally there’s Henry, who sold out Michael and thus his own soul in order to save his brother, who ended up dying because of the entire ordeal anyways.
I also love the ending, where Ellie leaves the grave while Joel stays. It’s implying that Ellie is starting to become more cold and is feeling less, whereas Joel is slowly becoming more human and feeling more.
I mean, to be fair, it's not called "A Whole Bunch of Us"
They really did the Bloater justice, and the way it kills Perry is one of many deaths you can get if you let one grab you as Joel.
And Sam and Henry will never not make me cry. Somehow the show did the characters even better. 😭
Actually the reason for a Bloater (big armored infected) is just how long it’s been alive. As time goes on the fungus grows and layers until you get to the final bloater stage (10+ years)
the order actually goes as following:
Runner
Stalker (2-52 weeks)
Clicker (1 year)
Bloater (10+ years)
Which makes sense as to why there were so many clickers at the shootout, most of them been down there long but not that long
The big guy is called a Bloater, in the game they tear off pods on their bodies and throw them at you causing an acid burn effect. The longer infected live, the more the fungus evolves and changes the host.
I was very satisfied with Kathleen's death. She was indifferent about kids, and got got by a child clicker. Poetic justice
when i first saw that end scene in the game, my jaw dropped for a solid 5 minutes, especially bc it just cut to black and flashed forward. i’m glad to see they did it even better in the show (imo).
Game and show both handled this scene with perfection, I like how the game we think he says it’s all Joel’s fault but he’s talking to himself…

She couldn’t save him but she fell asleep when she could’ve stayed up with him so he wouldn’t have died alone.
Kathleen's second in command was played by Tommy's voice actor in the game
Damn not even two minutes in and I can tell that primate doesnt have his seatbelt on. He in for a wild ride. RIP Henry and Sam.
FEDRA in this city had it coming but so did Kathleen and her crew. Maybe her brother was/would have been too passive but all she did was replace FEDRA's tyranny with her own form of brutality and then goes on to shortsightedly waste resources, manpower, lives on a single-minded pursuit of Henry and Sam. The "He Who Fights Monsters..." trope is in full effect here and the city deserved better.
Even having played the game multiple times, knowing what was coming, the WAILS of pain I had watching this ending when this episode dropped. It never fails to make me weep
There are different stages of infection
1. Runner
2. Stalker
3. Clicker
4. Bloater(that really big thing was a bloater)
There are other variants and stages later, but I won't say anything else because spoilers.
Also yeah the cutting off limbs method is something you could do. But it needs to be done immediately right away, and with Sam it wouldn't have worked because by the time he showed the bite to Ellie enough time had probably already passed😥
This episode hits about as hard as episode 1 and 3 for me. The opening slways hits hard for me. The love shown in epispde 3 got me, and the utter destruction of Henry's self after what happens to sam. 3 moments that always hit hard in this show so far. Can't wait to see the rest of your reaction bro
That fight with the bloater was awesome & that ending with Henry & sam was straight outta the game, that was such a powerful scene that even if you already experienced it in the game the show still left viewers speechless
In the game after this point in the story, i had to put my controller down. I coukdnt play for about a week. Absolutely devastating. Tears me up just thinking about it. They did Sam and Henry justice in the show.

Dude, the Sam and Henry story in the video game hit so damn hard. It left me just as speechless as you were here, the show handled it just as well too. Goddamn that shit was heavy. About the only thing that changed was that Sam didn't tell anybody he was bit in the game version, but he had asked Ellie pretty much the same thing, like if you're still a person inside when you turn. Ellie left the room after that and Sam checked his leg wound, so us as the audience knew but none of the characters did.
I've never seen someone literally speechless on the henry and sam scene! its a gut punch. i dont know if amputation works like on the walking dead

Big ones are called Bloaters. The show kind of skipped all the spore related stuff so I'm not sure what the deal with the big one is.

Great observation about how Michael, despite being a great man, as Henry described him, was not effective in overthrowing FEDRA.
Kathleen, as soccer momish as she sounds (lol!), was effective. So, effective, in fact that her group in KC succeeded against FEDRA while the FFs in Boston, who were willing to use violence, failed. Even Marlene said that FFs were failing everywhere. So it’s not even just using violence, like Kathleen was willing to do and perhaps Michael wasn’t, that creates success. FFs used violence too.
Whatever leadership Kathleen brought (perhaps remorseless ruthlessness?) legitimized her leadership among the rebels in KC.
My reaction was literally the same. Absolutely insane. Pure silence and shock. I cried when I first watched. So wild
That ending is brutal
I tried to rank the episodes when I finished the series and boy picking a number 1 is real hard when a lot of the eps are 10s lol
I still remember playing the video game for the first time 10 years ago and witnessing the Sam and Henry scene, I was 15 years old and I was literally left speechless and with mixed emotions, sitting there for 30 minutes.
Size plays into it as well. A child would turn faster than an adult. An ankle bite had the longest time on the chart (12 to 24 hours) - Sam turned overnight. For amputation to work it would have to be nearly immediate.and I'm not sure it would even work under the best of conditions.
They do a great job of getting you invested in characters in only one episode.

Fun fact Jeffrey Pierce who is Perry on the TV Show actually did the voice acting and the motion capture for Tommy in the video game. There's a good few actors in the TV show, either playing themselves or other roles.
The Bloater is that big because it was just a big tall person when they were normal. Add the years to it and it’s basically like you said, a “super clicker”.

19:09 The "Super clicker" is called "Bloater" and not just because he was underground, but beign infected for a longer time than regular clicker itself.
The time gauge of how fast a person turns most probably applies to only adults. A child might have a shorter turning time because of body size.

The sam and henry death scene still gets me teary-eyed even after watching the episode multiple times. insane.
I have watched this episode several times before and it still gets me every damn time. I have to say that I'm so glad Kathleen was taken out by a kid...since they die all the time and she had no empathy for Sam's illness.

I knew that this episode was going to rip me to shreds because of the ending. I've played the game many times, and it never gets easier to watch.
I didn't piece things together until the featurette at the end of the episode on Max. but Kathleen's (Melanie Lynskey) real life husband Jason Ritter (yes, John Ritter's son) is one of the infected that comes up from the underground.
Probably one of the most emotionally impacting episodes. Ellie is officially broken.

Type 4.
*Bloaters* -Now on the more advanced forms of infected, Bloaters are what several years (3 yrs minimum) of cordyceps brings. They are aggressively strong, but blind just as the clickers. In the TLOS game, they have the capability to toss seeds of fungus from their armor plating, using them as acidic bombs. Ellie made a reference to that in Episode 2 when she was asking about the rumors of the infected outside the Q-Z. (Also the way Perry was beheaded from the roof of his mouth is a nod to how you would die in the game had any bloaters got their hands on you as a death clip.)
With that out of the way… Man! What an episode, I love the acting, the tragedy, the action, it all blends so well and it just felt like a great episode that comes off very obviously impactful. The writers made some minor changes to Sam’s character, from him being deaf to the choice of toy laid on his grave. Minor, but for the sake of more depth for the tragedy, the show’s version of events still carries quite the impact. This is MY favorite episode of the season hands down. Can’t wait for you to see more!

Its the final form, i think it is because of how long they have been infected. I remember joel in the game explaining one. Hes been infected for a long time . A long long time 😊

Dude with the white beard and long hair is Jeffrey Pierce. He voiced Tommy Miller in the game and he’s also the voice of Merrick from Call of Duty: Ghosts and a bunch of other video games I can’t think of.

It's so fitting that "kids die every day" Kathleen got killed by a child clicker. This episode was great, and that ending was so impactful after what they went through. It did hit me a bit hard. My son just completed treatment for leukemia and I can't imagine having it in an apocalypse situation. It was a death sentence before modern protocols, which require multiple chemotherapy drugs and blood transfusions. So in that scenario, even with a single chemotherapy available, it likely would be a death sentence again. That said, I sympathize with Henry as I would probably do the same thing he did for the sake of my kid.

Yup, another rough one. Introduced to sum characters, fall in love with em and then see their tragic end. All in one episode. Masterful film-making goin on here. And honestly, a lot of credit has to go the game creators who really created the awesome long time ago and were very hands on with the show.

I have a theory about the huge creature that came out of the ground ...It's Shaq! The creature is an infected Shaquille O'Neal.
Well from what I understand, a bloater is someone who is physically strong enough to have survived the infection long enough to become totally armored with the fungus. Most people end up like the infected Joel and Tess found in the basement in episode one. They find an isolated, dark spot and grow into the environment. Only those physically strong enough to survive that can become a bloater. Obviously someone who has a lot of size and strength to begin with. So yeah, someone like Shaq.

Yeah, you had pretty much the same reaction that the rest of us did when we got to that ending scene in the game. Hell, I bet many of us immediately tried researching to see if there was a way to prevent it. I know I did.

The clicker horde scene in the show is TEN TIMES better than the one in the game. I enjoyed this episode so much (minus the last scenes of course. poor kids). Watching all the thoughts run through Henry's head right before and after he shot Sam was so painful. Those actors were amazing. So glad they've got nominations!

Whether you play the game on or off stream, it would be great to hear your thoughts and comparisons between the game and show.
A lot of what you see is what you get in the game but it is adapted. Things were changed. There are different motivations. You don't get that whole Bill and Frank backstory and what you do get of it is different. The infected and the clickers work differently and they're more prevalent in the game. The big clicker in this episode is called a bloater in the game (BTW it was a practical effect).
my reaction to the ending was very similar to yours, although mine had a lot more ugly tears. I knew it was hitting you because you are usually so talkative and you were so silent that I knew you were just broken up. RIP Sam and Henry. ❤

I didn't even wanna finish the show after this episode, I was so distraught.
I'm *so* excited that Primate is going to play the game... !!!! 🥳 I think it's the perfect fit while the wait for season 2 is still on. I hope you enjoy it!!!
On another note, my least favorite thing of the whole series is the casting of Melanie Lynskey. She's great, I like her other work and I *love* the idea of the character Kathleen. But she just didn't sell it for me. Which was a great disappointment. I know her husband was also involved in some way, and the creator Craig Maizin personally asked her as a friend if she would like to do the project... and that's cute and everything. But I wish she had said no. Lol. I don't feel like she connected with the character and how she chose to portray Kathleen just completely fell flat for me. I think there was a way to play that character that was really engaging and would've twisted my heart seeing her live in opposition to her brothers principles, while trying to find justice for him. I think that is so compelling. Unfortunately this is the one thing that completely missed the mark for me.
Also, if you watch the end of that scene in episode 4, you can see there was someone in the window glare when Joel looks. It's minor and I honestly thought it was a crew member of HBO they just missed in editing. Lol. Until that scene where we see Henry's point of view. 👏
That last scene with Henry & Sam is so heartbreaking. And all of the actors in that scene completely nailed it. My gosh, hats off to them and I can't wait to complete the rest of this series again with you *Primate.* I rarely see you so devastated by something and I completely understand. Completely appropriate reaction... 🕊 Ellie's note on top of it all 😞 is just so sad.

@@nitrosix3206 what Henry did was understandable but it was still immoral. Cathleen wasn’t wrong about the harsh reality that kids die all the time it doesn’t justify killing a good man. But the show just makes her over the top evil to make it easy on viewers to see the situation as black & white
