Even in this first appearance, it seemed like Stan & Jack were planting the seeds for Wanda and Pietro to switch sides -- the fact that they're mainly there from a misplaced sense of gratitude to Magneto, and are clearly less "rah rah evil" than the others. But having them jump ship to the Avengers was a brilliant twist, and one of those moves that really started to tie the Marvel Universe together: the idea that characters could be completely transplanted from one series to another.
I always find Pietro's protectiveness of Wanda kind of adorable. Her power set is one of the most op in all of comics and he's still like "Stay away from my sister!"

One bad example of retcon is when Marvel editorial decided both Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver weren't mutants but in fact they were Inhumans.. That retcon made very little sense if we read past stories involving these two characters
For the longest time, i just assumed they were villainous, because in the early 2000's, I only had X-Men: Evolution to work off of, were they were main brotherhood members, jump to mid 2000's, I learn that they're mainly Avengers characters with good hearts, and from their first appearances, always had it deep within. (Emerald Scarlet Witch, I'm honestly surprised that hasn't been referenced more often, even green Quicksilver has more in hindsight.)
I like to believe that Scarlet Witch’s costume is green on the cover because she fired a hex and it hit a reflective surface and hit her outfit. She then changed clothes by the time the story starts.
2:23 I would say Wand's costume is green to offset Magneto's red costume- it helps with how the cover is organized and laid out. As for my favorite era it would be when they joined the Avengers- there were some great stories told then and Wand specifically got more character development than she did when she was with TBoEM.
Today’s wig is hereby given the name “Smokey Midnight!” I feel like a modern explanation for the Brotherhood’s name would be that when Magneto first tried to use his powers publicly to help, people thought he was attacking and yelled “Get out of here, you… you evil mutant!” So he pulled a Richard III and went all “Fine, if humans want to hate us that badly I’ll call my team the _Brotherhood_ of ‘Evil Mutants!’”
I kind of feel like the explanation is right there in the first comic. Magneto believes the only thing humans respond to is fear. Naming his group evil can serve only to enhance fear of the group. so he did it to make his message more effective. Nobody ever said it was a good plan.
Magneto: "We are the BROTHERHOOD OF EVIL!!! but also I think I'm the good guy, don't think too much about it..." *The Brain wants to know your location*

I got into Marvel during the period John Byrne got hold of these characters, and his take on their relationship with each other and magneto is the one I still feel should be canon. I hate that they made them inhumans, mostly because it undermines the entire M Day plot and its consequences, particularly for quicksilver.

There really is a beautifully simple explanation they might use for the 'evil' part of the name: as the fantastic four revealed clearly, the comics we read are supposed to be based on their real life adventures. Therefore all you have to suppose is that the same comic chroniclers of the F4 worked on the X-Men comic as well, adding their own spin along with the documentation. And how fortunate for this idea, that's exactly the case.
I used to have an issue of Avengers which had Giant Man trying to grab Pietro an Cap saying "Stop Quicksilver! He's the only one who can stop the world from blowing up!". I miss covers like that.
I remember reading the first issues of X-Men on Marvel Unlimited and how the stories showed each member developing their powers until they reached a status quo of the 1980s and 1990s. However they reached this status quo around issue 24 when they graduated from the school. I would say 'learning about one's self' was more or less dropped by then and only picked up when a new member joined the team.

While them being Magnetos kids was a retcon if sorts there had been speculation for years before. It was shot down in an Avengers storyline from the late 70'a/ early 80's but then it was made canon later. It wasn't something that came out of left field like some retcons
Hey when you put evil in the name of your group, shouting Now I destroy that wall with my power blast is pretty much in charecter. The Xmen are just trying to keep up. I really like the 80's versions of the charecters. And a Green Scarlet Witch? Was she envious of Jean?
It's so interesting you felt the story was padded. Compared to modern writing, yes, but at that time it was really getting your money's worth. Two and three part stories felt EPIC! I hope you cover their becoming Avengers!! That's such a strange team to carry on the Avengers' name, but they managed to scrape by, and Cap emerged as the ultimate Avengers leader.
I like Toad---I think maybe it's the medieval costume. In spite of the official Marvel backstory, I like to think he IS from the middle ages, walled up by his royal family in the castle, where he hibernated all those years like a real Toad. Also, his simple minded fawning was just an act, and he was really spying on The Brotherhood and The X-Men for higher level hidden mutants.
I recently read the original run on X-Men. Please consider the first Juggernaut story, plus the first Sentinels story. I also recommend the Roy Thomas/Neal Adams run which actually sets the stage for future X-Men stories. Their Sentinels story is very good, imo. Plus, it was Neal Adams that first drew Magneto without his helmet. Even then, the resemblance to Quicksilver was clear. I believe it was John Byrne who created the retcon of Magneto being the twin's father. I hope Magneto is retconned back into being the father of the twins which would make him a grandfather again. I find it very ironic that a racial supremist would have such a diverse family containing Inhumans, humans, aliens, and even synthezoids. A lot of bigots find themselves with diverse grandchildren. Vision having a father in Ultron is one thing, but a father-in-law in Magneto is hilarious.
1. Wanda and Quicksilver I suspect are going to be mutants again when they settle up in mcu. Everyone misses that relationship they had to Magneto and Polaris to an extent. 2. Wyngarde was a scumbag. I do like all 3 of his children thou
If it had been X-Men the Animated Series Jean Grey she wouldn't have been able to pick up the box because whenever that version of Jean tried to do anything she'd just moan and pass out.
I always loved...wait...the Toad! Mortimer's very simple powers were among those classic ones (Doug Ramsey, anyone?) that were underestimated so much that the writers' attempts at "upgrades" only sufficed to effectively ruin them.
Sasha on an old school run. Where will her whims take us next? More scarlet witch, Brotherhood or people cutting cakes with their powers? The cake was not a lie! To be fair, the comic was written in the early 60's, i believe they were generally more campy and clunky with the writing in those days
It was later said that adding Evil to their name forced Charles into a moral imperative. Thus constraining his actions. It should be noted that until the Vision & Scarlet Witch miniseries in the 80’s, we’d never seen Magneto without his helmet. He could’ve been anyone. A clever reveal that’s ignored unless it’s plot convenient. The other iconic event of this era was Quicksilver vs. Cyclops. Guess who’s never joining the X-Men?
We saw him without his helmet in X-Men #62 way, say back in 1969, and in (Uncanny) X-Men #125 in 1979, and in 141 in 1980, and in 150 in 1981 (which was the first time he had been established as a Holocaust survivor). All those appearances without his helmet were published before the Vision and Scarlet Witch miniseries of 1983.
@@dngillikin Oh, no what!?! Ok, maybe it was just me that never saw him. In my defense, 98% of early X-Men were selective reprints for me. And even some of those were hard to come by at the time. Marvel Triple Action was a standout. Nevertheless thanks for the corrections! I’ll have to check them out.
Do you think Wanda will somehow act Gene X or Marvel introduce the mutants in another way? I always think about theories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe . What about you ?
Could you please do Polaris (Lorna Dane) next? She is Magento's other child as well as Wanda & Pietro's half sister. It would interesting to compare her first appearance & evolution to that of Wanda & Pietro.
Wanda is in my top five Marvel favorites, (Natasha, Wanda, Emma Frost, Ororo, and Carol) Would love to see more takes on her. For example, the creepy time Magneto made her dance for him. When she and Pietro became Avengers. And why do the X-Men hate Wanda and Pietro so much, and yet were so willing to accept Rouge despite the fact that she was also Brotherhood.
The source of Black Cat's bad luck powers aren't that mysterious. In her first appearances and for awhile she claimed to have bad luck powers, but actually she would show up at locations beforehand and set up traps, so when she was there later and the traps sprung against enemies, she would claim that her "powers" caused that to happen. Years later she and Spidey became a couple, but he was always worried about her being hurt because she didn't have any powers. So when Spidey was missing, she went on a mission to get powers. She eventually found a scientist who increased her strength, agility, and gave her actual "bad luck powers". What she didn't know was that the Kingpin was behind that scientist. Felicia had stolen a device from him years ago and he vowed revenge. He had the scientist design her powers so eventually they would start affecting everyone around her, including Spider-Man. This was Kingpin's revenge - if she cared about Spidey she would have to leave him. Eventually she lost those powers, but then later she got them back, but she controls them now - they don't affect anyone she's around without her control.
I was disappointed you didn't make any mention of the original "Brotherhood of Evil Mutants", a club of science fiction fans at an East Coast university, who chose the name because of its initials B.E.M., which usually stood for "Bug-Eyed Monster", the jocular term for the stereotypical alien menace of old-tie science fiction. This origin was so widely known at the time of the Brotherhood's creation that it was referred to in the X-Men parody in *_Showcase_* #65, the second appearance of the Inferior Five, when the incompetent heroes meet Professor Egghead's superhero students who are all atavists - not mutants, but throwbacks to more ancient forms. They fight with their evil counterparts, the FAN Club, or Fraternity of Atavistic Nogoodniks.

Great video love the hair..... and I agree poor Jean
I loved this!
Thank you for doing it. Is House of M in the works?
Early X-men was so creepy the way all the team was horn-balling on Jean
They were all teenagers (and the Prof was barely older) and she was the only girl on campus....
I’ve known them as evil since FOREVER, and only the last few years (MCU and Young Avengers) did I found them The Good Guys
Always make sure to click the notifications fast when there’s a new upload
Thanks for not saying first
Well at least were no talking about the ship because my goodness why
Trauma from the Ultimates emerging...
Yeah the messed up incest. I still don’t understand why people don’t get that Mark Millar hates superheroes. Stop having him write them.
@@wyrdhunter so thats who we need to off
I like Toad---I think maybe it's the medieval costume.
I like this. It's too bad we cant just have you go over every comic run ever. but alas that would be impossible even if you were asgardian.
The T-Boz look is just...correct. Glory be.
If it had been X-Men the Animated Series Jean Grey she wouldn't have been able to pick up the box because whenever that version of Jean tried to do anything she'd just moan and pass out.
And Cyclops yelling, "Jean!" or "Jean? Are you alright?" I love X-Men TAS but damn it gets old
I always loved...wait...the Toad!
My favourite retcon is Moira McTaggart. I would love a video about that!
Do you think Wanda will somehow act Gene X or Marvel introduce the mutants in another way? I always think about theories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe . What about you ?
No...that would be an extremely lame way to introduce Mutants and the X-men into the MCU
Funnily enough in the real world not nucing something is a pretty low bar to judge someone's evilness.
Thanks for the nod to X-Factor!
Can you do a video about retcons you think don't work well?
The ableism and thirsting of Professor X is so uncomfortable
The most comic-y of comic style wigs. J'approuve.
The ad before this video was for Wandavision
Nice soca reference.nice recap
Someone:*taps Wanda on the shoulder*
Quicksilver:DoNT tOuCh mY siStER
There 's been so much clay related content, idk why i read quicksilver as quicksand lol
I dare you to do a book club narrating a Quicksilver comic with speed voice reading throughout. 🥰
Can you do a video on Wiccan and Speed! Please!🙏🏾
" Who do you think you are,Lois Lane?Ha!
Fun video Sasha.
This is great
