Snake plants- the plants that will love you if you forget they’re there.
It’s been 2 and a half months since I last watered this one.
Snake plant are the plants that I always recommend if you are first starting with plants because they come in so many shapes and sizes. If you are having issues with it, ensure that you’re checking the soil (I use a skewer stick or chopstick) for moisture. Neglect it and then when you decide to water, wait another week, and then water throughly!
i asked in another post of yours but since this post is more recent i'll ask again. how do you get your snake plant to spread out like yours is? mine grows is an odd diagonal, fan-like shape. i've recently moved it out of dirt and into water so more oxygen could get into the roots (they weren't doing to great) but i would like to be able to move it back to dirt eventually.
(edited to fix typos)
I don’t know if you’ll see this comment, but I just watched a bunch of your shorts yesterday and INSTANTLY because obsessed with your videos! I made sure to subscribe and I’m so glad I did!
I’m actually kinda spooked (in a good way lol) that you just put out a snake plant short because I was searching through your other shorts for snake plant help! Yesterday, I was dusting my fiddle leaf tree and my elbow knocked over my snake plant and it + the soil went EVERYWHERE. I’m glad it happened though because it brought some issues to my attention that I wouldn’t have noticed. Can you please, please, please help me!!!! 😭😫
1.) Description of my Snake Plant:
-It was given to me around a year ago by a friend who propagated it indoors and I also keep it indoors. She gave it to me in a small plastic nursery pot, but after about 6 months of owning it I put it in a slightly larger 6in clay pot because it was getting too heavy and kept falling over. The leaves seemed fine and were and still are completely green with no yellow or brown spots anywhere. I do not overwater it as I wait around 1-2 months between watering. It seems as it is growing (slowly) and I’ve even noticed 2 new babies sprouting which makes a total of 5 leaves now! 🥳
2.) My problems since yesterdays fiasco:
-When I knocked over my snake plant, it instantly separated from the soil. My soul was extremely dry because I hadn’t watered it in a while, but apparently the root system was sitting only 1.5-2in below the top of the soil. The root was decently thick and a healthy white color, BUT it had almost no little roots coming off of it like yours did in previous shorts. There was no matted roots I had to separate as there just weren’t many… roots. I washed dipped the roots in water to clean them and let it soak for around 15 minutes as I hadn’t watered it in about a month while I propane’s a new mixture of potting soil and perlite. After I got the soil mixture together, I sprinkled rooting powder on the roots of the snake plant and buried it deeper within the soil this time. Fast forward to this morning, my snake plant’s leaves are no longer straight and really wavy. I don’t know if it’s just shocked from yesterday and needs a while to recover, or if it’s too cold in my second floor bedroom, or what?!?!
I hope you see this and can give me some insight to my problems + help me grow it even stronger! Thank you!!!!! 😊
I got snake plant flowers
Is this the mother in law plant? I killed mine 😕
Our Costco snake plants also flowered last summer 2022. First pot had 1 stalk, Second pot had 2 stalks. (Wonderful fragrance by nightfall.)
I didnt water mine for a whole year and the thing is THRIVING. I get why its nicknamed Mother In Laws Tongue. They thrive out of Spite.
It's poison
😂😂😂
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!! SO TRUE....
@@bastiaanzoetaert9628it’s safe for pets so highly doubt it’s poison
😂😂😂
I finally learned to leave my snake plants alone and let them tell me when they need water. For instance my current snake plant I haven't watered since before Thanksgiving and it's still growing like a champ. I'm gonna leave it alone until the leaves feel slightly soft and then I will give it a good drink.
My mom had one that was huge. She had it for 30 years. She had a great green thumb. Thanks for bringing back sweet memories of my mom. She is in heaven now. 💖😊💖
I took a cutting from my snake plant, watered it and gave it to my friend. When I saw it again it had been over 3 months. It hadn't had ANY care but it had roots and was still completely green just a bit wrinkly. Gotta love these plants
I have a snake plant that literally survives off the steam from my shower and the occasional watering. Don’t know how I keep it alive, it’s not really growing because again, I treat it like trash but ITS ALIVEEEEE. Also shout out to my pathos for doing the same. You a real one.
GOOD TO KNOW! BOTH OF MINE R IN THE BATHROOM BUT I WATER EVERY WEEK AS I DO ALL MY OTHER PLANTS & IM BEGINNING TO SEE THE FIRST STAGE OF ROOT ROT IN 1 OF THEM! ALL THIS INFO IS VERY HELPFUL SO I WILL CHANGE HOW I WATER!!!
Did not know pothos was like that but it makes sense because of the air roots
Same! Mine is in low light so it doesn't grow very fast but she's growing! I also never water her (twice in the past year more or less). She was one of my first plants and I couldn't be more proud of her 🥲
Pothos*
They are near immortal.
I forgot mine when we moved 😅 It survived without water for a year and a half. It's still thriving 😂
That’s crazy😂
So I have become a plant dad the past few weeks and you have been crucial to my success. Your videos help me so much. I made your soil mix and I started putting my plants in pots that drain. ❤
I had a snake plant survive 1.5 years with no water, forgotten in my childhood bedroom when I first moved out. Quite of bit of it died. But enough of it still lives on to this day ❤
Wow
You inspired me to really dive into having plants. I did finally get a snake plant and I’m semi terrified of killing it because I’m a succulent murderer but keeping my fingers crossed lol
I used to kill succulents too. Because of this wonderful lady, all of my plants are doing great
In Brazil we call these "espada de Ogum" or "espada de São Jorge" (that saint with the dragon) and put them on the entrance of the house, near the door, so it can kinda protect your home by preventing bad energy from coming in.
A really powerful lil guy ✨😊
I have one that’s 8 feet tall. I need to repot it, but that’s a buddy system kind of thing.
That's one of the most beautiful snake plants I've ever seen! I love it! I just got one for myself for the first time, hopefully it does okay 🤞
Thank you so much! She is large and in charge.
“Look at - just look at it!” 😂 beautiful snake plant ♥️
your eyes are so pretty that’s all I could focus on in this video🥺❤️
One of my snake plants was gigantic, but it grew lobsided and I wanted to repot it so that it was straight again. But before I would do that, I wanted to let the soil dry out to prevent root rot from damaged roots from the repot. And then I procrastinated that for 4 months and only then repotted it and watered a week later after the roots could heal. And it's perfectly fine, only one leaf was floppy but that's back too. So yeah...
You are beautiful 😍 and so are your plants! 🪴
I probably go a month month and a half between waterings for my snake plants. Usually the leaves will be less firm when they're ready for water. At least that's what I check for before I water.
I freaking love my snake plants. I have so many because they grow so well and I always have babies popping up from the soil.
how do you get it to grow new ones? i feel like i’m doing something wrong
I had a small snake plant in my bathroom, and it did great with the moisture from the showers we took. I had it for a while and never watered it. I went away on vacation and asked my bf's mom to water my plants (bc that bf was useless when it came to taking care of stuff like that while I was away) and she over watered the shit out of it and within a week of me being back it died. I told her not to worry about that one but she didn't listen.
that pretty unfortunate, did you give her a list of when certain plants needed watered? i would’ve left a note with the watering schedules
Im so glad I got cuttings from my snake plant that I was to heavy to bring inside when it froze in Galveston Texas. It never freezes my plants. I found some cool ways to cut the cutting to get more roots. I almost bought a lrg snake plant a Home Depot, but I 💘 to grow my plants from cuttings in this chapter of my life.✌🌻🌱
I had a snake plant that I neglected and it started to get super dry. I tried to water it then gave it too much water. The leaves got yellow and limp. I was able to rescue two large clippings and put them in a glass with water. It took some time but roots grew and I took my time getting new soil and three new leaves sprouted! I was so surprised. Now they are in their new pots and soil.
Hadn’t watered mine for like 2 years. Lots of life changing stuff happened. I thought they were dead, but what the heck, I pulled off all the crispy leaves and threw them in a pot of rain water. A couple weeks later they started growing new roots. Thanks for reminding me to take them out 😆
Mine died because it outgrew it’s pot and I didn’t know until I dug through the dirt and found big roots touching the bottom of the pot. 😢😢 was my baby and one of my first plants. I call it plant suffocation 😅. Def need to buy another one soon, succulents are my favorite.
Look into the cyndrical snake plant. They're super cool & similar to snake plant.
Snake plants love being root bound. It used to be a tradition of sorts that you’d plant a snake plant in a terracotta pot, and only repot it when the roots grew so much that they literally cracked the pot open! I’m guessing that it was probably something else that killed your snake plant
I keep mine in a terracotta pot because my grandma told me it would break it's pot when it was ready to be repotted
Don’t give up on it!
I have a snake plant that was a piece of my grandmothers. It's over 60 years old. Still growing new babies.
Your videos make me so happy.
If you all like snake plants look into the cyndrical snake plant! They are really unique & easy to care for!
I water all my snake plants once a month and they are huge the best 3rd floor apartment plants ever 😂❤💁🏾♀️
I put mine on the back deck in the summer. It blossoms then.
How often do you water it outside?
My mother has something similar to your snake plants, I don't know if they are snake plans or not but there growing flowers, long stems with a ton of flowers and THEY SMELL sooooooo good
In college I killed a snake plant by forgetting to water it for waaay too long.
I have brown thumbs, not green thumbs.
I was so happy when 2 of my 17 snake plants flowered. I'd love to share with you.
Krystal, Krystal! I want a jungle house, but I only have East and West facing windows. Does this matter? Most plants I find recommend South facing windows, also where do you find the best pots? Where do I get nursery pots? Does filtered vs distilled vs tap water matter for most plants? I love your content so much and have so many questions lol
I have killed off most of the snakes plants I have owned these past few years and I am hellbent on changing my ways. 💪🏻
I have one leaf my mom gave me, like 10 cm tall. I put it In a tiny pot and it's already growing 2 new babies. It's in a very bright and warm spot. It's thriving. It's also very hot right now here in Portugal, so I Def have to water more often, once a week or so right now
I put my snake plant in a jar of water over a year ago, it was dying from over watering and it was meant to be temporary until I repotted it. However, it has thrived in the jar of water and has produced babies. I just refill the jar when it's dried out.
You should remind people that this plant has extremely hydraulically powerful roots that can crack porcelain and pottery. I keep mine in plastic cuz it's one of the few materials that can't just poke its roots through
I’m amazed and terrified at how strong their roots are. I have plastic pots that have been permanently bent out of shape cos of the roots. I love my babies growing but I just wish this one would slow tf down sometimes 😭😭
Thanks for this information. Didn't know about crown rot. Was wetting the leaves.
Wow!!!
I have had my grandmother snake plant for 30 years and it has never bloomed. I didn’t know that they did.
I have a snake plant, got it at WW around 25 yrs ago. It just bloomed, never has done it before. I trimmed the stalks just now and had a very sticky resin-like substance ooze out. Got some on me, had to scrub it off my hands with Dawn dish soap. Could anyone tell me if it was poisonous to humans. It's in a room with a door so the cat can't get to it.
I water my snake plant once a week lol. It lives in my bathroom in low light and just started blooming! My first snake plant bloom 🥰 I never expected this because I'm aware I'm over watering it and it's not in optimal conditions. I think the soil might be hydrophobic, I haven't changed the soil in years so maybe that's why it doesn't rot? Anyway, this is why I love plants, they always surprise me 🥰🥰🥰
I have one in my shower (don't judge) and I think I've only watered it twice since it's been relocated there and it's been like a year. One tip for figuring out if it needs water is if the leaves are super bendy and soft. When it's good on water the leaves will be strong and won't bend as easily
Mine and me are on a “I forgot you existed for a month” schedule and she has little babies now 😂😂
These plants are pretty resilient. My dog dug up and chewed up one of my snake plants pretty bad. Even chewed up a lot of the roots. I figured I'd put it back in the pot and see what happened. Though I wasn't very hopeful. It survived! I couldn't believe it went through that much distress and still lived!
Beautiful lessons and gorgeous eyes!
Thank you for your info.
Your plant is gorgeous 😊😄🌷
I haven’t watered my three snake plants in at least 6 months. They sit in an east facing window. I just went to repot them out of the nasty soil they came with and two of them had slightly hydrated soil left! Still very healthy root system and I saw many babies starting to grow! I love the easy peasy set and forget factor snake plants have
I water mine three times a year. One of them is 5 feet tall. Both are 7 or 8 years old.
Mine has been doing great(doubled in size in less than a year!😮) and I have the most erratic watering schedule for him. 😂 I always make sure the soils dry before I water and it’s usually only half a water bottle every 2-3 days. Hasn’t thrown a fit yet(knock on wood😂)
You can take cuttings by placing it in a vase with water and it will form roots.
I have two at my fireplace. They're beautiful now, so TY for the advice
The thing I love about my snake plants is the fact that they do well with my benign-ish neglect. I am not the person to be having fussy, babied plants.
Wow yours looks so beautiful! Mine is sad. 😅
Love the passion at the end I'm like that with mine 😂
My snake plants wasn't doing good in low light. I had some I propagated and in low light, and it looked like it was barely growing. I added a grow light to them, and they are flourishing now.
I didn’t know that snake plants were succulents. You learn something new every day!!
I have a cyndrical snake plant & I love it! Do you have one? Anyone on the comments have one? They're so unique.
I'm actually more guilty of understanding watering my snake plants lol the wrinkles made me so self conscious and I moved them to a spot with less light but I can see them more easily and now I have a solid watering regimen for them
Thank you just got my snake plant. Any tips for spider plants? I got one too and she keep a turning brown. Not sure why
Mine live outside over the summer... I brought them inside beginning of October... and watered them for the first time last month... I have over 20 lol..
my tall snake plant seems healthy but has erectile dysfunction. Not sure what to do to make him happy
I just bought my first plant that I’m actually going to take care of and I got myself a Venus fly trap from Walmart.. so ima deep dive into your video to find myself some care instructions
I wait until I’m like “oh shit how long has it been??” She’s still putting on new growth!
I killed mine by giving it a mansion when all it wanted was a university dorm room. A.k.a I gave it too big of a pot and didn't realise it was dying until it was too late. I've chopped the good leaves though and they have roots now so it's not all lost :)
I totally agree with you when your snake plant is in soil. Unfortunately I seem to kill my plants when in soil from overwatering😢. So now I have my plants in Leca and my snake plants only in water😁
Love the size of your snake plant, mine is still a baby
I love mine! They’re so pretty I can’t get enough of them😅
"Look at it"..."Look at it"!!! ... the best part of the video lol
Yes, I love my snake plants. I have thirteen now with about 21 babies on the way! They love the bright light and it’s super dry here so they do get at least some water every day even if it’s a few sips…
I love your reels❤
That's one beautiful snake plant 😍😍
How often do you fertilize your plants?
What can I do about brown leaf tips? Can it be trimmed off, or just let it be? Thanks. FYI, I looked at your plant once you told me to and it is truly something to behold!!!😂
I recently got my first two plants ever !! a string of bananas and a japanese aralia. I've had them for a month and they seem to be doing well thanks to your tips, so thank you ❤
Mine seems to like a northfacing window (usa) and watered every 2 weeks. If I water a month or further apart she gets crispy roots and gets tippy
I left my snake plant on the balcony and the morning sun turned her yellow! I lost 2 leaves, but I have 5/6 new pups coming up! 😢
What a healthy gorgeous snake
Thank you! I wondered why I was killing my snake plants. I’ve watered the leaves. Opps 😊
You’re the best! I love your videos I’m starting to become a planty lady and I love it!
Staring at my snake plant wondering if I’m over-watering or under-watering…
The outer leaves of mine bend over and baby shoots come out of the middle. I use chop sticks to hold the leaves up. I water every two weeks. It's 2 years old.
This is one of my favorites. The lithops I ordered a while back finally got here and are doing great!
I live in tropical area and let it dry my snake plant for a week and all of my snake plant died, now i water every other day, so don’t follow everything
How do you keep the leaves from twisting or curving?
Best part is u can propagate it so u buy one and ur getting a life time of experim- I mean babies…. Baby plants……
They're kinda the perfect blend-like a succulent, but needs just a little more attention. But it also won't sure because you looked at it sideways
my snake plant was my first plant and it was inside my room and i watered it like every week and then moved it outside and kept messing with (not a good idea), kind of forgot about it for like a year and when i remembered it i took it back inside and now i water my big one when its dry and my small one like once a wk (kind of) but i also realized my snake plants like to be in a small pot or a well fitted one.
I don't know if it's a different plant but over in the UK, it's also known as mother in law's tongue
Actually if you give them exactly what they want like putting them outside in the sun all day long you can water them more frequently and low to medium are a death sentence to them it's just they die really slow
The two toned snake plant make your beautiful green eyes POP.
Where did you get that lovely plant? I'm searching for a tall, lush one like that.
I have a cyndrical snake plant & love it. They have such a unique look to them. They sprout pups from the mama constantly. It's super hardy. Mine did even better in full spectrum lights in MN winters!
My senseverias died just to spite me. I watered them when the soil was completely dry, one died. Then I watered when the soil was bone dry, yet one died. Then I stopped watering and one died from underwatering. Then I watered the remaining one and guess what? It died.
The plant may have had a disease or the soil was insufficient.
How do you get it to just grow straight up?
I drowned mine :(
So I cut off the rotten bottoms, stuck them in wet soil and ignored them for half a year. Now it's like they're plastic, all green and tall.
Hey Krystal, do you have any suggestions for a first time plant owner with a dog? Something simple easy and non toxic? Mid size. Not huge either. Any suggestions?
Mom had a snake plant just like that one when she passed away, and I managed to kill it😫. I saved ONE tiny leaf from it, but it still hasn’t rooted after many months.
I water my snake plant about once every other month. I just changed out the soil and noticed that it has almost no roots. I took over the care of this plant from a co worker. What should I do?
My snake plant- I split one out of the 3 crowns and put it in water. Surprisingly it doubled compared to the two in soil…I guess it must love water lol
P.s: I also include cinnamon powder and it’s fine. 😊
I grow snake plants in a fish tank, not completely submerged.
What do you do when their leaves look like floppy puppy ears but are still solid/stiff bc it’s being taken care of properly??
