I noticed at the very start, before the vocals kick in, Brian is zoning out. Carl notices and starts gesturing toward him to move to the mic. Mike is also keeping an eye on Brian and so is Al, who also begins motioning to him to turn toward his mic...and he does at the last second and begins singing right on cue.

Yes, and I am not positive on this, but it sounds like the lead vocal is almost double tracked when Brian is singing the opening verses, and I notice Al is about three or four inches from his mic singing along with Brian and constantly watching Brian, just in case he needs to step in and cover the lead vocal if Brian goes south. So I think the double tracked sound is Al being close to his mic, but not on it.

At the time in 1985 the Beach Boys had only been around since 1961 as a known band, some 24 years. Certainly in 1985 the Beach Boys would have been considered as mature rock stars. However now we are some almost 60 years since their origins and more than ever considered part of the integral part of Rock and Roll and modern popular music. I was there. Bought a ticket from a scalper for $45 and arrived in time to see the end of CSN.
Besides that, I only remember Madonna, Led Zeppelin, Chevy Chase and maybe Phil Collins.
The sound live was great and it was the introduction of Cherry Coke. I had one of those and a snow cone and THE WORST HEADACHE EVER THAT LASTED TWO WHOLE DAYS from dehydration.
I was 21 and was going into my senior year at Villanova and went alone. I also saw my doppelgänger there. Weird.
I’ve seen The Beach Boys numerous times as well as Brian Wilson. Even got his autograph in Chicago in 1998. Seems like yesterday.

Idk about anyone else, but I can't help but feel tragedy when listening to the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson was a genius, a masterful musician. Then he got thrown to the background of his own band, relegated to stage performances like this which are so clearly puppeteered with Brian not actually singing or playing; He couldn't deal with playing to the public and studio desires, which were willfully misguided with dollar signs in their eyes. All because of things out of his control. A life destroying mental illness certainly didn't help things.
Not to me, though. I know what Brian is capable of. 60s Brian was a masterpiece. Vocals were PERFECT. Bass playing, keyboard skills, all great. Plus he was In the running for BEST producer of all time in his prime.
Almost anything after is just tragic to see. Like I said before, just a puppet. A shell just to appease the band's image. I want to see the REAL Brian. The REAL Beach Boys.
And speaking of the REAL beach boys, you've got other tragedies laced in throughout. Like Dennis Wilson is a tragedy as well; a bright torch burning out fast indeed. Carl was more of the same; right when he takes the reigns of the band, he dies too. Just one tragedy after another.
PS I've had just about enough of "Leading Man" Mike Love. He somehow has negative charisma. I'll stick with the Wilsons please and thanks.

Best thing about this is that they knew Brian's performance would be warts and all but didn't try and cover it, they just run with it and Al sings with him and with the mix (plus probably Jeff) it sounds just perfect.

I suspect there are 4 people signing lead here including Brian. He is live but Al and Jeff are much louder and there is another voice fading in and out that is obviously covering for both Al and Brian when necessary which is not unusual for a giant outdoor performance like this.
