On that day in 1985 I woke up at 6AM and recorded the entire 18 hrs of Live Aid on VHS. Took up 3 tapes. Still have them.
Me too! Then I spent the rest of the summer watching them back!
Man I would love a copy, mine was destroyed years back during a hurricane
Except mine was on Betamax! No really!
Would apprciate it lots if you can send a copy to me...
Did the same. Unfortunately don't have the tapes anymore

@@AceDeclan IDK that was some impressive vibrato in his voice.
@@AceDeclan It's amazing how you get people criticising a live performance BEFORE autotune came along and made it impossible to sing REAL live.
Saw these guys two days ago singing this song here in Melbourne, Australia. They've still got it!
I was one of the lucky 90,000 in the crowd that day. At age 17, I didn’t realize that it would be the concert of my life.
Oct. 2023 update: I’ll share my personal insanity of that day. My four friends and I got tickets (they were $35 which was around 3x the cost of most big concerts then). But the weekend fell on the same time another trip I had planned with other friends who were going to Wildwood, NJ. So it worked out I’d be dropped off at the concert by those guys on Saturday morning and I’d meet my concert friends at our nosebleed seats.
Only problem was, when I got there around 9 am, the seats were empty because my friends had worked their way onto the field. Problem was, they were my ride home, back to the Poconos, which is two hours away).
So I snuck past security and wandered through a crowd of 90,000 teenagers looking for my “friends.” Bear in mind Cel phones didn’t exist. If I didn’t find them, I’d be stuck in Philadelphia at age 17. My mother didn’t even know I was at the concert!
I found my friends about 40 yards from the stage. Right in front of that big television monitor in the middle of JFK. It only took less than a half hour to find them. It was a miracle.
omg i would love to hear abt it!!! i’m 14 and i love all the 70s and 80s music , i wish i was alive for this
mya rae, it’s almost hard to believe it’s been so long. I’m roughly the same age as Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall (the other “students” were actually years older.) We saw “The Breakfast Club” at the movies the same summer as Live Aid. At no time did we think it was some big cultural movement or whatever, but 35 years later, I guess it was. Bravo for liking the old songs by the way!
Tom Raski oh wow that’s amazing!!! i’ve always loved the breakfast club grease dirty dancing footloose....etc. what was the most memorable performance at live aid??
mya rae, for my friends and I, it was Led Zeppelin, but The Cars, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, George Thorogood, The Pretenders and even Madonna were some of our favorites. There were so many that day, just keep surfing UA-cam. They’re all on there.
Tom Raski ill go watch them all!! thank you for sharing

People don't remember how BIG Simple Minds were in the 80's. Absolutely massive,
That's a Trump style claim if ever I heard it - people never forget about them.
They were amazing! I still have all their albums! Yes, i said "albums"😎
Was it true Billy Idol turned down the chance of doing this song?
@@robertathey8504 hmmmm, don't know. Never heard that before but i can't imagine billy idol singing that song. I've always like him but i don't think that song would fit his musical style.
@@robertathey8504 the songwriters wanted Simple Minds in the first instance but they turned it down so they approached Bryan Ferry who declined, they went back to SM and they declined again, then they approached Billy Idol and he did record a demo but the producers decided to go back and REALLY persuade SM to do it, and they succeeded on the third calling. Billy himself said the song didn't fit his style.

So glad to be born in '69....the 80's was amazing for music as a teenager...
Even better I was born in 57 and got the hear all the 60s music!
I was born in 69 too and my oldest brother was born in 57. I think being born in the 40's would have been cool because you would have been able to experience the birth of rock and roll.
Summer of love 1969❤
The 80’s were a golden age. This song has such a groove and catchy progression. Simple Minds pulled this off great live in that forum. I love when frontmen get involved and close with the fans!
It's just full with love.
Back when it didn't matter that you looked like a high school teacher, as long as you had talent.

One of the best bands ever. Didn't get enough credit here in U.S. Love Jim Kerrs vocals.
USA dejo de lado a los mejores talentos de otros paises, como esta gran banda
Jim all the way from a Toryglen high rise flat in Glasgow, near the world famous Hampden Park. 1985.
A ginormous leap from Toryglen to Philadelphia, PA. The guy in the pink shirt, Charlie Burchill, was a joiner in the Nitshill, south west Glasgow, Glasgow District Council Building and Works Department.
at least one of the best HC bands from NYC showed them tribute:

💯! Excellent musicianship all around. This song, performance, and this footage, it's all for the ages. I think as long as humans are around, it will be playing on the radio, streaming, or whatever medium of the future. Regarding credit or somewhat related to it, I've seen them described as the Scottish answer to U2. Not making a judgement on how they compare or not to U2, but IMO an interesting observation. I think they are more dynamic and melodic than U2.
Who is listening this masterpiece 💚
Man war das eine geile Zeit . I miss the 80's .
I can't believe that this was almost 40 years ago. My, how the time has gone by.
One of Scotlands greatest bands , still going strong today ...wonderful .

They're still together??
I never hear about them. Where are they ???
I live in Philadelphia. I was 13 years old. I remember I was out riding my bike and it had to be 130 degrees outside. I came home into our air conditioned living room and sat on the floor for 13 hours and watched this. My father taped (we still have the tapes) on VHS. Such a memorable day.

After they tore JFK Stadium down, what replaced it?
Ken Costlow it was torn down for years and then they built Lincoln Financial Field. Probably like 20 years later.
But the new field is nowhere near where Jfk was
Nebojša Mickov huh?
Definitively this song is an hymn of the 80’s glad to born in that era I was 19 years old when this concert!!!
The number 1 song of the entire 1980's! I've watched the ending of The Breakfast Club a hundred times just to watch Johnny Bender put the earing in his ear, raise his fist in the air and then have Don't You Forget About Me start blazing away as he crosses the football field....
Thanks for making me cry :')
They offered it to Billy Idol first. I can totally hear that, but it's the definitive Simple Minds song. Great drummer.

👍
Absolutely
Without a doubt!
No concert now or in the future will ever beat this one, period!😊80’s for life.
Live Aid, put together by Bob Geldof and, this is never mentioned anything like enough, by Scotsman Midge Ure, who I strongly feel never got the credit he deserved. Without Midge Ure, who performed at the Wembley end of Live Aid, there would have been no Band Aid - there would have been no legendary song for all the ages - Do They Know Its Christmas?, which can easily rank alongside John Lennon's War Is Over and Imagine, because it is absolutely timeless. Midge Ure may not have been the PUBLIC face of Live Aid, but he did make an enormous contribution to this event, and that should never be forgotten. While Geldof was all about how great am I doing this, Midge Ure was the exact opposite and just quietly got on with it in the background most of the time.
Really , yes they're good. I was in Seattle RUSH 40 concert. Awesome
You're right!!!
We should organise another Live Aid to be honest
@@blackman5867 It will be a disaster, there is not enough good music, quality singers or bands to make that concert a classic one like this one.🙄

Probably cause I've never heard a live show.
This is 'Real' music, sang Live. Long live the 80's!

@@jimziemer474 Yep, written for the film, which is easily one of the most definitive teen films ever.
Does anyone remember when Simple Minds was one of the best bands ever??? This performance at Live Aid in Philadelphia was awesome. There was no politics; just some of the best bands of that time coming together to perform, rock out and raise awareness of the extreme famine affecting a large portion of the African continent in the mid 1980's. I would say these concerts in Philadelphia and London are on a higher plane than Woodstock. What a time!
And he’s truly singing the song there live, no auto tune or vocal enhancement. I miss the days when it has to be *real*.
he's a good singer, he actually sounds like he does on the audio track

Simple minds. Lloyd cole and the commotions etc.
My first and best concert ever .
Almost 40 years, I saw a small part of this music show in Brazil, and to see now is wonderful
Even though his stamina has never been near great, he was still in control of his voice, at that time. Listening to Jim Kerr nowadays can be quite a job, and there have been many, many concerts when he clearly didn´t hit a single note. That´s why they´re heavily backing him up with supporting singers so that he hasn´t got to do very much on stage. Charlie Burchill is and alway has been spot on with his performances, and Mel Gaynor on drums is also a real treat. I also really do appreciate the actual band roster with Ged Grimes on bass :)
One of the best voices of the 80s.

This was the first time the band played 'Don't You' ...live. Just a few days rehearsal in New York where they were recording their next LP ( their 8th LP) . They were in the same studio as the Rolling Stones ...I was standing with Bill Graham at the side of the stage. What a day... Unforgettable!

What a performance and song. Absolutely stunning
This is one of many great acts who performed at Live Aid in 1985. Today's kids should watch it & learn because it was all about the music & the cause for famine relief. No nudity, no foul language & no politics. Just an awesome day full of talented musicians.
And no cel phones up in the air blocking your view.
That was a tme before the entire planet became so cynical, when it was all about celebrities really wanting to do good things to make the world a better place, and it was in their lyrics.

At the time I don't think anyone knew how big this was, I woke up early that day to record it on my Beta VCR and watched as MTV went back and fourth from London, England to Philadelphia USA with what turned out to be THE BEST CONCERT IN HISTORY! How far we've come with A/V equipment. Seeing the Roadie pushing people outta the way so he an keep Jim's microphone cable tangle free. Great job by the stage hands.
Totally iconic song! Don't get me wrong! But the drum coordination and vocal it's what makes this incredibly emotional
