There was a time I was looking for more video's on the RG351V and this just popped up 2 years later! I love this thing! Russ turned me onto it years ago, I got the Odin and the RP3+ but I always find myself picking up this thing, too many great memories when I was a kid with a gameboy lol. Great review! Sorry for being late, UA-cam doing it's f*cked up thing lol.
Thank you so much, man! I’m glad you found the video, however late 😂. Yeah I think this one doesn’t get enough live now that there are so many similar vertical ones, but I’m beyond happy with this thing. Still play it regularly. Again, thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching!
Got mine yesterday in black..so far I’m loving it. I work overnights and I was playing with this on my lunch break instead of resting…but it’s worth it..
I bought one of these just to play original game boy games on, because playing DMG gameboy games on a landscape handheld just feels . . wrong. The screen is high-res enough for a 3x integer upscale in retroarch, add a GBC power light overlay and the bevel shader and you get a fairly authentic, but modernized game boy experience. Also you can add the DMG/GBC bios to your bios directory for the Nintendo scroll/chime before every game. Overall a very similar experience to the Analogue Pocket for half the price.
Thanks for the great video and review - I've just ordered one of these from the Anbernic site (they're currently on sale). Although it's now been replaced by newer Anbernic handhelds I chose this as I understand the chipset can run Pico-8 games natively which I'm really keen to try (don't know if you've tried running Pico-8 on it). I chose the black version like yours (sadly no DMG colour scheme for the 351V) and glad I did as it looks great in the video. Also, love Istanbul! One of the most fun, vibrant cities I've ever visited.
Great review, watched a load and this one was very helpful as you attacked it from someone new to this (ie. me) rather than the guys that have a million of these devices to compare. Thanks, sub from me👍
Definitely going to pull the trigger then. İ was trying to decide between 351elec and ArkOS. I'll go with 351elec and let you know how it goes! And thanks for watching!
Not gonna lie, I've had this since October 2021 and I have yet to play a game on Dreamcast or Gamecube that simply breaks the barrier of playability. For me it's been Gameboy, Gameboy Advance and some Mega Drive games I played as a kid. These play perfectly, the rest may need tweaked, altered or just slowed down.
True, but installing a custom firmware helps a lot with those stuttering games. Reegardless, it's perfect for the older ones, as you said. Thanks for watching!
First, I bought the RG351V in wood because how many other gaming devices do you own in wood? I liked it so much I bought a second, this time in grey which resembled the original Gameboy a lot more. Great little handheld. I have 351Elec installed on both.
Thanks a lot for watching! Definitely a good deal at regular price, especially with the "pineapple forest" update, which I'll do an episode on in the near future!
I just got my 351V and using the base software, How do I exit games. I can't for the life of me find a way to exit games without hitting the reset button. Even the paperwork says push Start + A, that isn't working, it also says push L3, but on the diagram there is no L3. Am I missing something easy as this seems like something that should be known easily.
yeah it took me a while too, very annoying that it isn't explained clearly. There are two ways, one is with L3 (press the left joystick in until it clicks) and the select button. That brings up the RetroArch menu which has an exit option, or the easier way, press start and select together, and then press them together again. That brings you back to the games list menu.
Hey Overdrive and viewers!!! QQ regarding RG351 (351V to be specific)… Has anyone else experienced issues where GB game saves revert back to earlier save games when saving in game and not with save states? For example, I’ve been playing Pokémon Red, and got Charmander to evolve into Charmeleon at around level 15. Saved in game, and powered off. Now on fresh boot, and loading my save game, it’s an earlier one with only Charmander at level 9. I lost 6 levels of progress. I can’t find any backups or way to get my good save back. Is this why save states are in the RG351 handhelds? Like, is this a known problem and the save states are to avoid it? Or am I just the unlucky person who got a bug/glitch?
I haven't experienced this yet but I will try to duplicate it and see what happens. Sounds like a really annoying problem. Hopefully someone will have a fix for you!
@@GamersOverdriveRetroMode thanks for replying. I’ll try to learnt he save states since they save as individual files. I know it’s not true to the original system it’s emulating, but at least it works properly. Keep up the great vids. 👍🍻
This problem could probably be fixed by using other firmware built for rg351v such as arkos or 351elec . Please do try because it seems like a bad glitch ...
I feel your pain (I also live in a country with expensive import fees) kudos for naming "Retro Game Corps" and yea the 351 family is great BUT only after installing a custom OS, because the original OS and game list is crap. (0 optimizations and terrible game selections with a lot of hacked roms, also the SD cards that came whit it must be changed ASAP because the failure ratios on those brand less crap is VERY high)

@@GamersOverdriveRetroMode p.s retro game core gives nice technical walk throughs but when it comes to devices he changes mind like a girl choosing dresses. Awesome bro, I use the v90 as an everyday carry and discovered one very important thing that "every" reviewer missed. You can only really insert it into your pocket in one direction otherwise the power switch (which is so flimsy and light) will turn on without you realising and drain the entire battery. Its a bad design flaw. Its happenned to me so many times but ive learnt to be more careful, but it still happens. It's not a deal breaker. Hope you're smiling bro. You just liked one of my comments minutes before I was about to leave this comment. The planets are aligned :)
It's a pretty modern city of close to 20 million people. Amazing place for history lovers. I love the food. The people are generally kind and friendly and have a strong sense of right and wrong, but it helps to speak their language. It's not exactly an "international" city and English speaking is definitely not ubiquitous. It's a Muslim majority country with a clear separation of religion and state, which also explains why drinking alcohol is normal and only frowned on by the very observantly religious. It's a dangerous place at times, but not due to crime. Crime is relatively low, but Turks don't take safety precautions with construction and driving on roads the way Western countries do, so you have to be careful. No frivolous lawsuits here as the court system takes forever. Turkish culture is very solid and clear, and they tend to be very patriotic, regardless of their particular political opinion. Wages are low, but so is the cost of living (excluding İstanbul, where it can be high depending on the neighborhood). In short (if you call that short!), I love it. Great place to live and raise a family.
I wouldn't say it's incredible. It has it's problems, for a start, it struggles to run the majority of N64 games (which is the main reason I got it because I thought it could run them and Dreamcast games etc) I don't know how the guy in the video got No Mercy running well but mine runs in slow motion. It will run SOME N64 games ok and Dreamcast, PSP - but usually even if the game runs ok the sound will be distorted and diabolically slow compared to the game, the reality is a lot of them will run like shit. Some of them wont even launch at all. PS1 and everything under it run great, the most impressive thing about it is the screen really it really is very nice. If you want a handheld capable of running anything past PS1 though it's not this. Also my hands hurt if I play on it for longer than 20 minutes or so. Maybe it's just me but it's not comfortable to use for long periods of time.
All your points are valid, including the hand cramps it can cause. But with custom firmware (emuelec with pineapple forest...easy install) it allows you to choose which emulator to use for DC and N64 in the RetroArch options, which basically fixes Dreamcast and improves its resolution (not for all games, but lots of the best ones) and also allows you to apply different plugins for N64, which improves performance, most notably running No Mercy just about flawlessly. I didn't cover that in this video because I hadn't installed it at the time it was made. I'll do an update to show off all that stuff. Yes, it has its flaws, which Retroid pocket 2+ improves in every area (and runs android which is the best option for DC and N64 in terms of mobile devices). Thanks for watching, by the way!
Already have countless emulators and games on my phone. This unit is very well-made, but I agree that out of the box it's borderline garbage. After a fresh install of custom firmware though, it's truly incredible. Everyone has their own preference. Mine is all available options 😉👍 Thanks for watching!
There's just something nice about playing on a dedicated device though. All mobile controller options range from bad to just ok, and using a controller w/clip is awkward and uncomfortable personally - and I say that owning 3 of them.
