What a beautiful run. Always love seeing where you run and views of the area. Also a joy to see Tia running with you too. Here near Salt Lake City, a lot of our foothills are icy or at the minimum muddy. You'd probably need spikes or some patience to get through the muddy quagmires. I generally just hike them and save the running for the paved bike trail near my house. As always, enjoy your videos and seeing what the other side of the pond offers

In northern Utah, it’s either packed snow/ice or the dirt is frozen! It does get muddy in early spring when it’s starting to warm up.

I was born in the UK, now live in Canada, in the interior of BC where we have very little mud in the winter. Totally different running experience here in winter, lots of snow, ice if things have warmed up and cooled down on the trails, so we run with spikes on and lots of layers. It’s often below zero and we have to wear mitts and toques, sometimes a ski mask if it is below minus 10. But it can be so nice to run on snowy trails on a sunny close to zero day, we call them bluebird days 😊The mud is more of a spring problem.

So so nice to see you out and about, gutting to hear that you're feeling fatigued but don't beat yourself up about it, the road to recovery isn't linear! I'm in Dorset so it's lovely to see a youtuber out on the trails :) It's also so refreshing to see the whole running journey (peaks and troughs!!), sometimes it's quite unrelatable to only see someone smash race after race with no hiccups you know? ... :)

The impassable sludgy mud is SUCH a problem! I live in South Wales and almost every route I try to run has some kind of bog 😩 Nearly sank up to my knees in it last week, I'm thinking of abandoning the trail running now until Spring! Glad to see you struggling with it too 😂

Not the best time of the year for gauging level you're at.

Mud here in southern US yes, but they will close the trail when it is too muddy to prevent trail rutting and erosion. Mountain bikes use the same trails

I understand your frustration. I have an autoimmune disease and sometimes my run feels like the first time I have ever run in my life. I've been living in UK for almost 3 years now and I've been struggling to get back to running exactly because of the mud (even in summers!)! I'm originally from Latvia were we have winters with snow (and yes, I've ran only outside for 5 years year round - it's actually so much fun to run when there's snow!) and we don't really have too much mood in most of the places (except some places in autumn when there can be much more rain). Going back to hat you said about trees - obviously, the climate is different but Latvia also have a LOT of forest and even all of the cities have a lot of trees! So this actually could be part of the reason.
Any tips on non-muddy trails near London? I'm a forest girl, but the one that is near my home is extremely muddy all year round! Or if I really have to give in.. any tips of falling in love with mud?

We have SO MUCH MUD here in New England... our last 2 winters have been so warm, the normal snow and ice is just MUD. What a beautiful place... and what a jump from Tia! Keep plugging away, you will get back to health again. And while it might feel like your vlogs aren't "quality" when you're struggling, they're actually really inspirational to those who struggle with chronic issues themselves, and a gentle kick in the pants for those who don't! 😂 That course sounds fascinating, I'll check it out! Edit: What a cool website! Being a farmer, i signed up for the Sustainable Food Systems course, and will take others too! Thanks!

I'm also struggling with trail mud, I'm training for a trail marathon & feel I might have chosen a bad time!
Hope you are recovering & getting your energy back
I do wonder if the Christmas food (more sugar) could contribute to feeling a bit worse? I picked up a slight niggle the week after Christmas out of nowhere....

Great video, looked a gorgeous day, but your vlog did take me back to a real hard time so apologies long comment coming up but yea really resonated some of the things you where saying on your run so i hope this helps you if don't fall asleep reading it !
It's a tough one, re Glandular Fever/EBV and its surprising how misunderstood it is but also the variability of the illness between people that get it. People often think its no big deal due to this (some GP's included). I had a bad case of it (according to my home GP who i saw when i returned back from uni whilst in the acute phase). The horrendous part was the recovery and to put it into perspective I was unfortunate enough to have meningitis some years later and whilst the severity of that illness at the time was really bad (Hospital 2 weeks) i was ok again not long after. I reference this as the EBV was so much harder in terms of recovery and lag effect caused much more suffering. Remember leaving a comment last year saying be careful as i pushed through it doing events and training, bit me so hard. Being honest it was a 2 year process to get back to training/competing and not having that god awful fatigued feeling, of 21 at the time but feeling 71. No other way to put it but just feel like absolute arse, at the time my home GP called it ME or post viral fatigue, again another super misunderstood illness. It's possible your going through this stage at present.
I remember well that frustration of just feeling like your improving so its natural to get back out for a run or up the mountains and then boom, back to feeling ruined again. I really struggled with it. Keep your chin up, its hard to be patient especially when its something you also enjoy to keep a positive mental balance so there is that pressure also. Cliche i know, but really focus on being kind to yourself, give yourself some mental space and focus on what you can do, not what you can't do at present which is super hard. Ditch stopwatches and strava just focus on HR and stress. I'd also recommend finding something that you really enjoy, a new hobby, that isn't physical, which is super super hard esp not getting that "high" from the physical side. One thing that did help me when i was getting slightly better was cycling, actually how i got into it as i found i could get that feeling of doing something, but keeping alot lower HR and getting that distance/speed/adrenal stimulus factor with a much reduced stress level on my body. It also helped with being a new sport I didn't constantly think last year i would have completed this course 30 minutes ago etc etc and self nag as i call it as had zero reference points! Not great this time of year but Tech has helped these days with indoor trainers (even cheap ones like the wahoo snap if you already have a bike) and Zwift. You mileage with cycling in terms of both the postive mental aspects and i guess physical with this may vary but for me it helped. Also if i'd recommend one thing, do not put pressure on yourself with putting races and events in the calender for 2024 (or making content for your channel by forcing runs if you feel pressure to do so). If i could go back and change one thing it would have been to stop planning the next 12 months out otherwise you start looking at schedule plans for hitting condition peaks and well it just leads to getting worse and a decline both physically and mentally.
I'm writing this as i remember at the time if felt endless and alone in the struggle despite being happy with everything else i had going on and a super supportive Girlfriend, but being brutally honest it felt quite scary of will i ever get back what i had. This is purely to reassure you that whilst it won't feel like it as present, it will get better, but it takes time, and patience and well being "boring" or rather as i learnt to call it sensible. Its real bugger but if it helps actually once i did recover i actually got far fitter, and mentally more resiliant which i actually took into my events.
PS - Also did any good fossils come up from the Dorset coast whilst you where on your run, bet your partner was excited to hear about the Pliosaur find! Wish you guys all the best and both a healthier and injury free 2024!

Gorgeous trails and area to run! I’m in the eastern part of the States and we unfortunately don’t have the same level of open access trails. The ones we do have are fairly well maintained though, meaning they’re mostly designed to shed water and prevent mud issues. One (paved) trail I often run is in a flood zone so anytime it rains a lot the trail turns into a hazardous mess, something I fret when when I forget and go out in my road flats, only to be met with a slippery mess. Happy running and glad to see you back some!
