As someone who learned languages in secondary school in the 90s, I am so here for this era of being able to use real content and do everything for free with apps and internet. Y’all younguns don’t even know how lucky you are.

Agreed, I'm blown away by it all, I'm in the same era as you but, I started learning a second language 11 years ago, and even the leap in language technology advancements in that short time amazes me.
I was introduced to Language Reactor last year by a Luca Lampariello video. Still, you went in-depth into the settings. I've used it to save the transcription for episodes, but I mostly use it to have subtitles in both English and the L2 language I'm working on. I use Assimil courses for more active learning.
Honestly at the end where you were promoting your book I thought you were gonna try to sell a course so big props for releasing it for free!
There are some paid stuff available, but I’ll always try to include a free version to help people get started 🙌🏽

You just made everything worthwhile! I've been stuck trying to bridge the gap between having a good knowledge of grammar and vocab but finding it impossible to understand native speakers speaking. Watching shows doesn't generally help because they speak too fast and watching shows for kids etc is just boring.
This tool gives me exactly what I need. Auto pause and the replay feature are invaluable by themselves, let alone all the translation functionality.
Without your video I'm unlikely to have found this tool, so thank you.

I don’t make anki cards, although I probably should. The way it’s helped is the speed and convenience of using the subtitles. Whenever a word I don’t understand shows up, I just hover the mouse over it and the English translation of it shows up.
I am trying to learn spanish and this is like the third video I have seen of yours in the past 3 months. I just hit the subscribe button, keep these videos coming!

Ive used language reactor for like 2 years now and it took my Japanese to the next level

I've been using Bing ai to do language translations at work and people have been amazed at how good it is. So I had native speakers translate multiple English texts to Vietnamese and Spanish. I had bing AI do the same. I then asked people around work which translations they liked more and surprisingly the AI translations more. For the Viet translations, AI won in maybe 90% of the text passages. And it was good enough where they didn't need fixing. The for Spanish translations, it was AI that won but not as dramatically. But again the staff only modified a few things here and there. And they were also shocked how good AI was because they've used Google translate and bing translator. And when you use bing ai it seemed like they were just cribbing the answer from bing and Google but the translations were different.
They liked the AI translations more? 😮 A lot of us were expecting AI to catch up, but it’s also surpassing us in many ways. Harnessing this could make life better. I’m working on a video for Bing this week-there’s some cool things you can do with Bing that you can’t with others 🙌🏽

Free AI language conversation app that lets you chat with bots in different ways, provides corrections and explanations for any errors you make, and even lets you ask questions of clarification from a separate AI while you're in conversation. It's letting me get heaps of speaking practice, which was the big gap in my language learning beforehand, and to do it in a way with absolutely no pressure, need to match times, and all the other stuff that comes with talking to a person. Great for me given I'm just learning how to talk. I think you'd love it!
This is cool, I’ve been having to use DeepL’s translator app and I would point my phones camera at my iPad screen so the app could translate the caption into English when I didn’t know the words. But this sounds so much easier.

Excellent Video! And, I purchased your book too. Can you do a version that helps learn English using similar prompts in Spanish? Please? I'm teaching Spanish-speaking students ChatGPT, but they are also learning English. This is a GREAT Lesson for both.
I hope the book has been helpful to you! 🙏🏽 The prompts should all come with a template to replace the language-that could get you started. There are some additional English-only topics that I could see us writing new prompts for, though, so I’ll put this idea on the list!
Ai will help you get matching sentences, a personal dictionary and cn find all of them in a jiffy and offer you instant translation, but you still don’t learn the language, because it needs remembering all of it and letting it pickle in your mind.
I've been using language reactor for a few weeks now and it really is great. I also have a 1yr lingopie subscription but I would say language reactor is better because it's free and lingopie doesn't have nearly as much interesting content as netflix. The things I love about lingopie are the video flash cards and the teaching sessions.

I got a lifetime subscription to LingoPie but I like LR better too. Mostly for UA-cam. Finding content on UA-cam is a little more challenging but so worth it.

I use LingQ to learn Korean and I think they were the first ones to color code words according to how well you know them. It's a horrible idea. At least for Korean. The reason why it's so bad (at least for Korean) is that due to word spacing and conjugation rules, the app will always keep telling you a word you know is new or maybe it was unknown before and you since learned it but it's still marked yellow because you marked it unknown for this specific conjugation/word ending and it hasn't shown up for ages. Each word literally has hundreds of possibilities. At least for Korean. The result is that any new book your article you try to read is full of colored words distracting you from immersing in the text. LingQ FINALLY gave an option to hide "LingQs" or colors and I was so happy. I've been using their app to read Korean since it's the best Korean pop up dictionary around although Google Play's built in translate feature isn't bad either. I haven't tried this feature with another language. I tend to focus on one language at a time and Korean is hard so I think I'll be at Korean for years to come. It could be really helpful for other languages but you can probably tell I'm skeptical lol.
This is true for every language that inflects words (most of them?). It's annoying at times but I understand the logic behind it and at LingQ they're aware of it.
If you don't mark inflected words as new words, what should be the threshold for a word to be considered "new"? In some languages verb conjugations vary wildly and you have to learn new forms as new words, there's no other way.

Same sort of thing with Dutch, only compounded in reverse. A common verb which you may have marked as a "known" word (in all of its conjugations) may also be part of any number of other common separable verbs with drastically different meanings. In Dutch, two or three "words" are often actually parts of the same word (namely, a verb or a pronominal adverb), so the entire LingQ method, if that's what you want to call it, doesn't work well with Dutch because it's just a dumb computer which doesn't know to treat those separable parts of the same word all as one.
As just one example, zien. Most common meaning: to see (in the literal sense).
Je zou toch niet willen dat Paul je zo *ziet* , hè? You wouldn't really want Paul to *see* you like this, would you?
There are any number of common separable verbs that contain the "word" zien. For example, eruitzien. Common meaning: to look (a certain way). LingQ just makes a mess of this verb because it's just a dumb computer which treats the separable parts of this one verb (zien, er, uit) as three separate "words," when in fact it's one word: eruitzien.
Voor ons *ziet* de toekomst *er* minder rooskleurig *uit* . For us the future doesn't *look* so bright.
I used to use LingQ mainly for the writing exchange and the forums, but they ruined the writing exchange and the Dutch forum has become a ghost town.

are the words that we mark will only stay marked in the same video/episode or will it also stay marked even when we watch other videos?
Did it 'kill' it? In fact among the online the language-learning community only a minimum of people use ChatGPT with any success (if any at all) and it is riddled with context errors. I learned four languages before the advent of the WWW and really it took about the same time it still takes, when people are not lying to themselves and other people: roughly 2-4 years to get functional. Netflix is useful (though I don't use it because it's a rip-off), but what I see today is people doing 10-100 times as much input and work than I ever did to learn languages before the internet became crazy.

I never took Spanish in school in fear it would bring down my GPA but I had tried apps like Duolingo and learned basic reading and writing but I still could not hold a conversation with a native speaker unless I get them to use the simple words I knew and talked really slow and annunciate. I tried to learn this way via subtitles but found myself just zoning out because I was still at the point where I need to hear a word multiple times to learn it rather than hearing a string of words coming at me rapid with little to no repeated words. I couldn't do it. Then I dated a Latina and now I can proudly say I can hold a conversation in Spanish. That is as long as that conversation is cursing somebody out lol
I have found Pimsleur great for French - I started at the beginning because I needed to unlearn all the rubbish taught in class. Pimsleur uses real spoken French as spoken by real francophones. It has really helped my ability to understand what is said to me. I could only be happier if they had a Québécois version!

How accurate are the translations? Is it using whisper?
I'm not sure I'm familiar with Whisper. I can only really speak for the Spanish translations since that's the main language I'm studying, and it's performed quite well so far.
It seems like you've done a really cool job at researching and trying to explain a number of features to us. Just one thing, I cannot right click. I don't have a computer. I see this does not relate to apps, but only websites. So, I think that could be a little bit more clear.
The only real factor in learning languages. Is times invested in active learning. And lots of passive.
I mostly agree-both active and passive learning are important. But also important to focus on the right activities; some are more effective than others. Cheers!

Instead of just stating the blatantly obvious you should accept the fact that benthelearner does not strike one as the guy who doesn't focus on important activities when learning languages. Conversely, you say that some activities are more effective than others. Is this statement supposed to leave anyone dumbfounded for being meant to be deep when it is not? Some activities are by all means right or more effective, depending on a myriad of factors, like time, experience, age, weather conditions, room ventilation, wether the study occurs in a war zone or not, etc. The list goes on and on. Well, anyway, congratulations on having discovered the holes in the cheese.

Netflix removed one of my all-time favorite Dutch language shows, which was also one of my all-time favorite shows in any language, so they really did kill an important part of my language learning. Teleurstellend op zijn zachtst gezegd.

Is this a good method for someone who is a complete beginner in the language or close to it?
Ideally with comprehensive input, you understand around 70% and 30% is new. If there are Netflix shows that fit that for you, then this should work. Otherwise you might look for easier UA-cam videos
You have to figure out yourself what works for you. Some people can just sit down and read a textbook but most can't (they can't torture themselves every day, they rather do something else). Do anything that is fun to you (or at least something you can tolerate). If you don't have a lot of motivation to learn a language, you can still watch shows that are fun to you and just add subtitles of the language you are trying to learn with Language Reactor. You can even keep watching your favorite US shows (or your native language shows), just add the target language subtitles. Yes, the translations won't match exactly and you will not learn a lot at the start, but that is what the beginning of language learning is like. Eventually you will learn some common words and phrases with minimal additional effort while you are doing what you would do anyways...watching a show you wanted to watch.
I think this works best for teenagers and young adults. Honestly, it works for anyone who can binge couple of episodes every day. You put in the time like this. I personally cannot enjoy most new shows anymore, likely because most Netflix shows are there just to fill the site with content, no matter the quality. Or I am just too old and feel like I cannot afford to spend hours every day on TV shows anymore (although I spend hours on UA-cam so it's probably just that Netflix shows are not fun or interesting anymore). So even this method of learning is not a silver bullet for lazy people...but it is definitely how I learned English as a teenager and it is why I have not really learned any other language. I was jut studying the other languages attending classes and using textbooks instead of consuming content, like I did with English in my teens.
Obviously if you have the motivation and discipline, you can do all the other stuff people recommend. But people on the internet that make youtube videos and can be bother to make their own anki deks and go for 1000 day streaks are the exception. It is BORING and most people will not stick with it. You have to find something that you can do consistently...most likely it has to be a little bit fun for you.

You just got it wrong by saying Netflix killed it. Actually, it really killed since they started having subtitles that don't match the audio... Such tools like Migaku and this one are useless in that case. It's almost impossible to find matching subtitles in German.
I mean you're still learning german tho
Many times they even mess up if the subtitles are in the same language 😢 Character says something and they subtitle the same idea but with different words…
On the show I started (German), about 1 in every 20 lines is a paraphrasing of what was actually said. The help pop ups also struggle with the differences that prefix verbs bring when separated. Still, better than other solutions.
Reasons for subs and audio being different… 1. The subs are done by a different company and possibly before the show has actually been recorder, so the script has changed. 2. Because we mostly listen much faster than we read, there is a limit to the number of characters we can put up in a certain amount of time. And there is also a limit on the space we have on screen. It’s been 15 years since I graduated from my French and Spanish degree and I have only subbed professionally once, but I think the idea was about 72 characters per 6 seconds.
@gogakushayemi That has to be very dependent on the demographic you are subtitling for and how used they are to subtitles? Because I find it very hard to believe that there are a lot of movies or shows where people speak faster than the average person can read.

I absolutely agree with you. I’ll always make it a point to explicitly call out whenever I’m compensated for anything I recommend. In this case, no-I just thought the tech is cool 😄.
