The University of UA-cam comes through again! Thank you for the instructions, worked great.
Not all Dewalt corded drills have a center screw. I have 2 different models and they don't.
I have seen a lot of misleading info which fooled me into thinking my center screw was worn down to nothing.
So I ground off my worn chuck, and discovered there was no screw. Finally had to buy a new spindle and bearing.
I put a KEYED Jacobs 1/2-20UNF chuck on it. Much better, no more scored drill bits or bits that spin.
Mine came apart and back together exactly as you instructed, Thanks
Before striking the large allen key with a hammer to undo the chuck, the side of the chuck needs to be supported on something such as a piece of wood on top of the bench, otherwise a lot of side way leverage is placed on the chuck spindle and it's bearings.
Thank you so much for your invaluable information, highly appreciate it, keep it up the outstanding job, have a great day.
Wait a minute!! You mean the clutch is suppose to stay in tact long enough for the chuck to wear out ? Whaaaaaat!!!!! I have never had any drill long enough to see a difference on a difference on the chuck fingers. That’s amazing. I have like 5 with clutches busted. I looking for that video now. Thx.
As clear as mud
DCD950 chuck removal the easy way. I tried all of the tricks I found here and other forums. What ended up finally working for me was using the drill itself to unwind the chuck. You could use a vise but I used my biggest pipe wrench. If you know how to use a pipe wrench this isn't very hard. If you spin one way it loosens and if you spin it the other way the wrench vices down on the chuck (usually pipe). Tighten the wrench correctly onto the chuck, add the battery to the drill (probably want to do this first), select gear 1 and reverse(again, first). There is NO set screw in the chuck. Not reverse thread or otherwise. The chuck is locktighted. The drill itself is strong enough to break the lock tight. I did use all my body weight (feather 145) to hold the drill and the wrench on the floor but it was easy. Pulled the trigger and I thought I broke something but no. It spun right off. This drill broke my hand once, under a house and in an awkward position, and I have strong hands. I hit a big nail and I couldn't release the trigger as it folded my middle fingers back all the way to my wrist. I can still feel the weather change in my knuckles from that one. This is a tough drill/driver/hammer drill. Too bad they discontinued it. I'm glad I can fix mine. It's the best drill I've ever owned.
FK YA.... i had trouble figureing out how to get my chuck off until i read your comment. THANKS A MILLION MAN
Dewalt d21570k
I'm facing the same problem and I'm so confused... Mine have no screw in the middle too
And that`s exacly how it went for me to . Im my dreams !
Thank you very much !
This video applied to my situation exactly. Except It too me a couple hours of elbow grease to do it.

UPDATE: After sheering off the tip of every T-20 bit that I had, I went out and bought a 5 pack of Milwaukee Shockwave Impact Duty bits and it came off in under a minute. Highly recommended! Thanks for this video, though, seriously. I can really imagine destroying the unit without good, clear instrux like this.
Came here because I just sheared the tips off of two T-20 bits while doing this job. Will try the bits you recommended! Do you think an impact driver is suitable or should I do it by hand? Worried the impact driver will shear the chuck screw.
Broke my dcd995 trying to get the chuck off, I guess there's a limit to how hard you can hit that Allen key to break it loose.
Opened it up and it completely sheared most of the pins that hold the planetary gears and ripped teeth off of several of them.
after the kent screw. I applied anti-rust and it came out without difficulty, very very easy {WD 40} DEWALT DCD 709
actually found it easier to disassemble drill completely than wacking it. But thanks for the video anyway.
Helped me a lot
It's going to be trickier on the situation I've got. My 20 year old dewalt has started to slip. Ground gear broken arbor, not sure. A friend gave me the even older version that had that two piece chuck on it. But it works. So I want to take the better chuck of my broken drill and put it on the older one. I can get the screw out no problem but getting the chuck to unscrew is going to be a problem. I just started doing it today do I'm going to need to get one of those monster allen wrenches because I don't have of them that big.
Best way l get chucks of is using an impact driver, one guy hit he's using the Allen key method l told him you will damage the internals, he carried on wrecked the drill, impact wrench hasn't damaged one I've done quite a few.
Kipróbáltam,működik a dolog! THX!!!
My Dewalt DCD790 doesn't have a torx screw head inside. It has an allen or hex screw head and it won't loosen by turning it clockwise.
When I could not remove chuck screw, some friends who are mechanical geniuses were ask for help and they could not remove the screw. The problem was the screw head was damaged by heavy use by original owner of bits contacting the screw head. Original owner put his old drill into recycling bin and purchased a new drill with keyed chuck to solve problem.
Many thanks, worked perfectly 😁
Thanks body , right to the point .Great video ....Bernardo ..See yaa
Is there a risk of damaging the planetary gears if you strike the key to loosen ? Is there an alternate method to lock the internals?
Yes there is, lol. I'm buying a new drill today because my chuck was apparently tighter than normal and I guess I hit Allen key too hard on the last try, I opened it up to see what I broke and all the pins that hold the planetary gears in place are sheared off and teeth were missing from several of the planetary gears.
Hopefully I can cancel the order of the new Chuck I placed last night.
Dziękuję za pomocny film
Hi, thank you for sharing do you know if this will work on the DeWalt DCD998? Or do you have to take apart the entire case
Won't come off.
Please make a video showing what to do if chuck is broken and can't tighten around Allen.
Cheers worked great for me.👍👍
Having a problem I've removed the screw in my dewalt but cannot get the chuck to release when using the Alenkey the video shows you hitting to release it counter clockwise however the screw losses clockwise. So assuming the video is not flipped the chick releases anticlockwise?
My DCD985 is frozen in the open position and cannot remove the torque screw inside?
What if the bolt holding the Chuck in place has snapped?
How about showing how to remove a hex stud in a corded dewalt drill. What size hex socket do I need? Not all sockets fit!!!!!!!!!!!
How you supposed to do this if your chuck is broken?
On the DCD995 NONE of these methods work!! I have just destructively taken apart this drill bit completely. The chuck is designed as a NON-REPLACEABLE part. There is a screw inside the chuck that can be removed, though that does nothing because the chuck itself is a press fit into the housing. This means hypothetically speaking you could grab the keyless chuck with something and pull it away from the drill to remove it, but I bet that would be nearly impossible since the press fit is extremely tight.
The only way I found to remove the chuck is to take both halves of the drill apart, remove the motor and planetary gearbox, and then strike the rod attached to the back of the chuck to remove the keyless chuck from the housing. Once you've done all this you'll find out, as I have, that the chuck isn't available for sell anywhere (none that I could find) and that you'll have probably lost some very small vital parts along the way, as did I. LMAO
My DCD995 was fairly old so it was time to put it out to pasture after so much construction. I just wanted to illuminate others that this chuck cannot be replaced and the only way to get it out is very time consuming and ultimately unfruitful. Unfortunately this model has built in obsolescence in this model.
Hi, dear.
The Chuck of my DCD996 is blocked... Repair of DCD996 = DCD995??
@@alo5585 sorry I'm not sure if Chuck operation and construction is the same on those units.
This might be very good info. What's missing is What TYPE hammer drill was it? For example, ereplacement parts sells the screw & chuck for DCD995 TYPE 3, with instructions. Not sure/Don't know, but wondering what type your DCD995 was. It appears that parts are switched out with each individual assembly run, maybe because the chucks are said to only be sourced from two companies for all tool brands. Main point of my long-winded comment is that a model number must include the TYPE or it's difficult to verify or act upon.
How about a fix-it for drill wobble? I suspect my corded dewalt I bought last year has a bad spindle, it has pronounced wobble.
Hi, this method is suitable for DCD795D2?
The set screw went off easily, but can't unscrew the chuck itself. Not even banging like the instructions. Thanks anyway
Whole reason I need to remove to chuck is bc it's stuck. Can't clamp onto an allen wrench to loosen
What if you can't open the chuck?
im really having trouble loosening the first screw! is there any tricks to unscrewing that particular screw? I'm aware that I have to turn clockwise to unscrew it. Thanks
Sometimes if the screw is difficult you can us another hammer drill with the bit to get the screw loose. If it requires more than that we have another video that may help. ua-cam.com/video/boehGcrozmE/v-deo.html
How about one that has a seized locking screw inside it? I keep breaking the tips of t20's. Can't really drill it out without a spare drill around. I tried adding heat to it with a soldering iron as well. Apparently dewalt likes their loctite. Sad thing is this drill is only a few months old and already work out.
If your drill is less than 1 year old. Take it to an Authorized Dewalt Service Center or a Dewalt Factory Service Center in your area. They should repair it for you under warranty.
Are you putting your drill in reverse to remove the screw? The screws for the chucks/spindles/etc are all reverse threaded.
i got a DWD520 VSR HAMER DRILL and i need to replace the chuck will u please show me how to do it.
Do you have any specific questions. This video link of should be perfect for your model as well.

I have the same drill and also need to replace the chuck. Does this brand have a screw in the middle or not? And if it does what kind of screw driver do I need?
I have a Dcd950 xrp with a chuck that keeps coming loose during use, the chuck does not have that reverse threaded screw you show in the video, so I'm not sure how to go about removing it.
The following link should help: www.ereplacementparts.com/article/890/How_to_Remove_a_Drill_Chuck.html
How to
Remove a Drill Chuck : eReplacementParts.com
www.ereplacementparts.com
This article explains the basic steps for how to remove threaded-on
chucks and taper-fit chucks, as well as steps for removing a spindle from an
open-center chuck.
Since your chuck doesn't have the center screw you won't need to follow that step. Good Luck!
Awesome! Thank you!
Why the new ones aren't the same as this defies logic.
I own a brand new DeWalt DCD796.
Inside the chuck it has no screw. How can I replace it?
Some drills do not use a chuck screw. The Dewalt DCD796 is one of them. If you are having problems with
your DCD796, take it to the nearest Dewalt Factory Service Center, and they will be able to help you. It should still be under warranty.
Thanks. I forgot the screw...
HELP i strikr it but it still wont unscrew the chuck after hitting it. Why is this? Any other way of unscrewing the chuck other than using the hammer????
Hi, make sure that the speed setting is on low speed and the clutch is set to the drill mode.
Hello, do all DeWalt Drills like the one in the video have the same spindle diameter/thread? Wanna replace the Chuck on a DCD795S2 (not sure if available in the US) Will a 1/2" 20UNF work? Thanks
Hi Fred, the spindle thread size for the DeWALT DCD795S2, is 1/2-20.
Fix.com thank you very much!
Your very welcome Fred. Have a great day.
hi i want to change DCD996 chuck but there is no centre screw. it is look like complete round pin. can you help me? please! thanks
Did you find a solution to your problem? I have the same problem
@@veron6385 It's probably a press fit like it is on the DCD995 which are nearly impossible to remove. Ultimately you have to pull the chuck forward away from the drill after removing the screw. Many of these chucks cannot be replaced so it's very likely even if you can accomplish this you'll be SOL.
I bought dewalt dcd996 , I want to change the standard chuck to SDS chuck to use SDS masonry bits , is this can be ?
That tool isn't designed to use the SDS chuck and Dewalt doesn't offer any conversion part to make this work.
Fix.com Is there a way to remove the chuck from the dewalt dcd996? The center screw looks completely round...
@@grandprixuse Did you find a solution to your problem? I have the same problem
What size Allen key is that?
1/2 inch looks like.
Useless if you cannot free the torx nut prior to trying to loosen the actual chuck.
why are dewalt keyless chucks so bad
I'm striking the allen, but the chuck just keeps spinning with the motor.
HI Mikhail, make sure that you have the speed of the gearbox in low speed and you have the setting on the clutch in the drill mode
Yeah I’m having the same problem with DW505! Is there a way to lock it?
You mean allen wrench? 😐
👍🏻👍🏻👌👌
AAAaaaaOwww For Trumps-Hair Sake. All DeWALT Drills have some kind of magic fucking reverse thread Center-Screw' My XPR-DCD950 TYPE-1 V18: Has to be one of the few that wouldn't, always My luck . Cant find a single-damn video on how to replace that Bullshit. If anyone finds a video on UA-cam, shoot me a link please; I don't care if it was recorded on a Nokia 3310 with no audio showcasing 33 total pixels. I just need some kind of a idea before I done fuck up my hammer drill beyond repair. If already didn't….
Now remove the chuck
and your unfuct! :D
