I just got the 2017 Malibu and I was so afraid until I remembered that my friend has a car that auto stops. I thought the dealership had gotten over on me.😁😁 I will try this out in the next day or so. Thank you for an easy and to the point answer.
Have only drove a couple of vehicles with auto stop . It was really easy to figure out that all you needed to do was be easy on the brake pedal and the engine never stopped. Don’t push pedal all the way down when you don’t need to .
I believe later cars have an “autostop off” button. Of course you have to touch it every time you drive. The last I looked you could get a “flip kit” for Ford trucks that makes it default to the “off” position. It installs behind the dash. Maybe there are kits for more cars now.
I’m going to try this ASAP as I’m having a ln issue with my 2018 Chevy equinox. I noticed there’s a lot of Malibu being mentioned for some reason. Where’s all the equinox owners lol!!? Anyway, I took my car to the mechanic for this intermittent issue that’s been happening for about a couple months after I had jerked on the steering wheel an awkward way. At the time, I think my check engine light may have came on briefly. Didn’t think anything of it after it went away & passed the all point inspection at dealer for a routine oil change with no other issues to report. Now every time I come to a complete stop & car goes into auto stop, there’s a series of signals that come up on my dash in this order when I release the brake back into drive mode; traction control on (which it’s always on), emergency brake release, service break assist. Then my radio shorts out for a quick second as well. This happens no matter how long I’m an auto stop mode of course mainly in city driving. Now for the past couple of weeks I’ve been experiencing the car staying in auto stop mode unable to go back into drive once I release the brake. I have to tap the brake again to wake the car up it seems as it showed no response to hitting the gas as if the car was in neutral. Vehicle checked out again at the dealer for not having any issues with their all point inspection. I then took it to my mechanic to run a scan and they said several diagnostic codes came up as if the system was going haywire with maybe one module possibly affecting everything. The car in general seems to run fine with the exception of these issues. Strangely enough after taking the car to my mechanic over the past three days, I noticed the problem isn’t happening as much now and is less intermittent, but it does still occur every day. Anyone have any feedback on this issue? This issue is what brought me to this post. I’m assuming if I turn it off or disable it that it will eliminate this problem that could potentially affect my engine or transmission. When I spoke to one of the service drive guys at the dealer they mentioned that they had a recent case of an equinox doing something similar and supposedly repaired the issue and not duplicate the problem was replace the battery which I’m sure the battery was fine and One of the modules. I have a feeling the dealer got over on this person by switching out the battery. My battery is also testing just fine. But the mechanic can’t seem to figure out which module they can possibly replace if needed.
I read Automakers are beginning to shy away from auto/stop because of so many issues. Their EPA projected gas mileage numbers were far from accurate using the auto stop. My 2018 Rav4 Hybrid MPG was lower than any Toyota I've ever owned. It was out 2nd (Garage, only Sunday) SUV. Glad I leased it and it went back after 3 years. I had 2 previous Avalons, and a current Sienna without auto/stop. The Avalons never got below 22mpg in the city and always 35 on the highway. The Sienna usually gets around 20 in the city. 18 was factory. The new Equinox has a button on the console to simply turn it off.

This is a workaround to the auto stop. It's easier to just tap the brakes right before you come to a complete stop, the engine won't turn off. You can also drive it into a pole, off a cliff, into a lake. These too will cause the auto stop not to work. I think we are all looking to turn it off in the settings so we can normally drive the car without auto stop kicking in.

For the folks concerned that auto stop will wear out your starter quicker just google it and you will learn that it does not. The modern starters work differently than the old starters did and most of the wear on a starter brushes does not occur during the crank but in the starter wind down after the engine is running and with an already hot engine this is significantly decreased. Since I do a lot of stop and go driving with a lot of red light time involved I will leave mine active to get every bit of fuel savings I can.
It does not save fuel...very little if it does. It is purely an emissions work around. Sales people at dealerships sell it as a fuel saver...it does not. Simply makes tree huggers feel all warm inside. I've ordered the delete harness for my vehicle
i have auto stop but since i learned how to handle im ok now i have 2020 eplorer with 179k miles on it and im never change the starter yet or evern chnange my battery 😅

Practice applying lightest brake pressure possible right before you stop. Training your right foot and auto stop is negligible. If you come up to a stop light you can also shift into neutral until the light turns green. If you get stuck waiting for a train just shift into Park.
Me too. I think most people like the vehicle (I have the same one too) and I find it to be really annoying. Might be good for the car jackers though.................
❤ Thank you Sr. ...😂 Well this tip really game me a way out of the problem. My car Dealer tryed to rip me off telling me that my warranty doesn't cover a replacement of the part that controls the malfunction of the Auto Start. They said the part (Multifunction Power Supply Converter Module) cost 327.00 and 125.00 installation. Shit I checked online and I can get a genuine part for less than 70.00 new. For the moment Im running the can fantastic with the Auto Start deactivated using the car as you recommend to bypass the Auto Start.
Just disconnect the ground side cable from the auxiliary stop-start battery (usually found in the trunk somewhere). No more stop-start. You will get a check engine light and a code (P305F). You will want to reconnect the battery and clear the code before visiting the dealer or doing a smog check. You could even install a heavy duty switch to conveniently turn that battery on or off. If it's disconnected for a long time, it may lose charge and that can give you a P305F too. Use your OBD scanner occasionally to ensure the vehicle has not generated any other codes.
I would like to know how to completely remove the System. There is a Module on top of the Battery that will fail and strand You and It's part of the System. Yeah that Trunk Battery needs to go too !
Holy shit this is helpful!!! I have a 17' Malibu I just got and will DoorDash in it and I can't have this auto start bs going on 300x a day!!! There's no way that's not gonna jack up the starter and battery in short time.

Do you have to put your car in L9 gear each time you start your car and use L vs D while driving? or is this a one-time thing (my apologies if you addressed this in your tutorial, I'm just not 100% on that) I just purchased a 2020 Traverse I noticed I'm using close to what I did (in fuel) as I did with my Tahoe. I'm hoping this will help. Auto stop is a little annoying when you drive SoCal traffic. Thanks!
Margom562 M you just have to do it when you start driving, it gives u almost the same gas mileage cause the Tahoe turned into 4 cylinders and V8 when it needed, the traverse is running on 6 cylinders all the time
@@_u0nda928 Wouldn't using the automatic transmission in L Mode damage the transmission driving around town on flatter terrain? ( My GM vehicle has the 6-speed automatic )
Great question , that is the purpose of L, to control the gears manually, driving up mountains you want to set it for 3 maybe, that will tell the vehicle to only use the first 3 gears ( which are the strongest gears) but since here we are setting the highest gear, the vehicle uses all of them as normal
That is correct, but to be more specific, it allows you to manually SET the highest gear allowed to use. For example, if I set it on two while pulling something uphill, the vehicle will only use first and second gear. So if you set it to the highest gear your car have, it will shift all gears as normal
For 2 years I have been cursing the day I purchased this Malibu because of auto-stop. Thank you for this easy fix

Thank you , i bought this year chevy malibu 2020 i have a button under the audio screen so that i can turn off and turn on the auto stop . Thank you for video once again
Do u have to do it everytime u start your car?
Chevrolet should issue a bulletin about this function
Eureka!! It worked on my '18 Malibu!! I no longer have to deak with my car shutting off at every stop at every light, every drive thru, everytime I come to astop sign. Thanks for making this video, always having to put it back into L6 is slightly a nuisance, but not that bad
Thank U so much. I loved the vehicle, however it gets really annoying when the engine keeps stopping. In fact, I would really question just how much fuel that is being saved. It's just not worth putting something like that within the drive train. Again, thank you for sharing your auto skills!!
Charlie it does save some gas but can you really put a price in happiness 😅

Just bought a used 2018 Equinox and couldnt figure out how to turn auto stop off. Just found this workaround. Thank you.
Chevy DID add a button so you can turn it on or off FINALLY
@@Sarah_Gravydog316 they didn't add a button to my 2018 lol
I just got the 2017 Malibu and I was so afraid until I remembered that my friend has a car that auto stops. I thought the dealership had gotten over on me.😁😁
I will try this out in the next day or so. Thank you for an easy and to the point answer.
I just tried it on a 2019 Chevy and so far is worked it has not shut off so thank you for the videos very helpful
awesome!
(we have the same hair haha)
Brilliant ! My Equinox company car was driving me NUTS !
Finally a proper explanation! It just sucks because now I have to back into my driveway.
2017 Malibu - Very easy do or undo. Worked perfectly.
I have a 2017 haven’t driven it in 5 months got it in 2020 when I’m well enough to drive again I will try this out for sure
Yes. I figured this out myself several months after purchasing my 2019 Malibu ls and it works well
doesn’t damage the car or anything?
Do you have to do that every time you start the vehicle or after you do it the first time you're good
every time you start your vehicle
Have only drove a couple of vehicles with auto stop . It was really easy to figure out that all you needed to do was be easy on the brake pedal and the engine never stopped. Don’t push pedal all the way down when you don’t need to .
Finally someone knows what to do! It worked great on my gmc Arcadia 2018
I’m glad I was able to help 👍🏼
Do I have to do this step each time I cut the car on
What happens if I want to put the car in reverse, do I go back to low and reset and press the plus sign again to select the gears?
Thank you. Just bought a 2020 Equinox and the start stop was driving me crazy. Works great..Thanks again...
You are very welcome 🙏🏼
I believe later cars have an “autostop off” button. Of course you have to touch it every time you drive.
The last I looked you could get a “flip kit” for Ford trucks that makes it default to the “off” position. It installs behind the dash. Maybe there are kits for more cars now.
OMG This is fabulous!!! 2018 Malibu and I did it while listening and it worked like a charm. Thank you so much
Glad it worked for you
I’m going to try this ASAP as I’m having a ln issue with my 2018 Chevy equinox.
What, where is auto stop located! I have a 2018-LS! It never stops and start!!
I’m saving this shit in my favorites
This method is waaay better than the last video I saw. They disconnected a wire harness close to to hood latch.
Thank you so much! I tried it the way you said in your video and it works. Thank God! I was driving me crazy! Appreciate it!! Love your video!!
You are welcome 🙏🏼
Had no idea it was this easy.. Thank you
does it work?
Thank you. Just bought an Equinox and that auto stop freaks me out so thank you very much!!

This is a workaround to the auto stop. It's easier to just tap the brakes right before you come to a complete stop, the engine won't turn off.
You can also drive it into a pole, off a cliff, into a lake. These too will cause the auto stop not to work.
I think we are all looking to turn it off in the settings so we can normally drive the car without auto stop kicking in.
mine shuts off at 30MPH ugh Hybrid model I was think of a manual switch tapped into the hood sensor
Lol 😂 I hate auto stop 🛑 frfr
🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Good answer
I heard unplugging your hood sensor works im about to try it rightnow lol
I can't even do that sometimes, i'm not even fully off the brake yet and the auto stop comes on it's so frustrating 🥲
I already tuned mine out, but I have to say this is a brilliant free mod. Well done
What also works is putting your a/c temperature to the lowest setting. That eliminates having to put it in L gear all the time.
How does that method work?
I’ve noticed that too. If you have the ac on the Lo temperature setting, the car won’t shut off at red lights.
Does the a/c has to be on or just in the lowest setting?
@@marvinpatton6736 it had to be on the low setting and on for this to work

Thanks for your explanation, my doubt is : after shift to L should we increase and decrease the gear manually or car will do this automatically?
Mazin Alkaradii it will do it all by itself
if you set it to D6 it will go through all the gears exactly the same as in drive.

This is fine as it works in neutral as well, but this is my wife's 2015 Malibu LS. It needs to be simple like a single ground input into the PCM. As an ASE Master Tech since retired, working on GM's is easy with global architecture. My dealer buddies retired or quit the dealer after management was placed under probation with funny money and selling out of state. 7+ teach for ACDelco and holding seminars, my "Stand-Alone" CD's I loaded in my laptop go to 2004 then stops. Trucks currently have a button to cancel. I will keep looking until I walk into a dealer's shop cold and see if an unused cavity in the schematic at the PCM needs a wire to ground signal.
DK, ASE Master Tech since 78. Retired
Stupid question. Do I keep my foot on the brake when shifting to LOW? Sorry. I have always owned older cars. This is my first new car and the auto stop is driving me nuts.
Please watch my video how to permanently disable start stop feature once and for all. it only takes a minute to disable it. ua-cam.com/video/rBxw2-JIbVE/v-deo.html
You do want to keep your foot on the break 😊
Yes, any other gear than “D” for drive cancels the auto stop/start mode. Just like it says in the owners manual that the used car manager throws away in case it has the previous owners name, address, service records or mileage that can be rolled backwards with a $300 Chinese made eBay tool. You are welcome! ASE Master Tech since 1978-Retired
That is correct, most people just do not like the feeling when it turns off
It does not save fuel...very little if it does. It is purely an emissions work around. Sales people at dealerships sell it as a fuel saver...it does not. Simply makes tree huggers feel all warm inside. I've ordered the delete harness for my vehicle
thank you 😊
What about messing up your Transmission going from Drive to full stop. auto shut off to reverse is a tricky situation some times
i have auto stop but since i learned how to handle im ok now i have 2020 eplorer with 179k miles on it and im never change the starter yet or evern chnange my battery 😅

You are so welcome
Practice applying lightest brake pressure possible right before you stop. Training your right foot and auto stop is negligible. If you come up to a stop light you can also shift into neutral until the light turns green. If you get stuck waiting for a train just shift into Park.
You going to ruin your transmission
Thanks for making this really easy the Auto Stop was diving me nuts GM should I just put a switch and then make it on and off but thanks a lot again

@@tonyh4502 just shift up to D...but then the auto stop is enabled again.Go to L and hit the + button 6 times till it reads L6. your good
S Justice or your highest gear. Mines goes up to 9 so make sure you go up to the highest gear
Work just fine don't worry about the Auto Stop anymore very good tip

Great, thanks for sharing. It works on my Equinox 2020. Im also succeed to find position of break pedal when car is stopped let say on Traffic Light but sometimes quite incomfortable.
So you are telling the vehicle to auto stop when transmission searches for 9th gear? Will this cause transmission issues later?

Thanks Castro, So what about removing the Other Junk that is a Part of That System. There is a Circuit Board mounted on top of the Battery that fails and the Car is Dead. Also that stupid Battery in the Trunk is Part of that System and needs to go too.
Thanks!
Margom562 M you just have to do it when you start driving, it gives u almost the same gas mileage cause the Tahoe turned into 4 cylinders and V8 when it needed, the traverse is running on 6 cylinders all the time
Isn't the L Mode only for mountain/hilly terrain? It changes the way the transmission operates?
It allows you to manually use lower gears for, like you said, mountain or hilly terrains or towing.
@@_u0nda928 Wouldn't using the automatic transmission in L Mode damage the transmission driving around town on flatter terrain? ( My GM vehicle has the 6-speed automatic )
@@nynthworld4152 Probably?
Great question , that is the purpose of L, to control the gears manually, driving up mountains you want to set it for 3 maybe, that will tell the vehicle to only use the first 3 gears ( which are the strongest gears) but since here we are setting the highest gear, the vehicle uses all of them as normal
That is correct, but to be more specific, it allows you to manually SET the highest gear allowed to use. For example, if I set it on two while pulling something uphill, the vehicle will only use first and second gear. So if you set it to the highest gear your car have, it will shift all gears as normal
