Awesome Thank you so much Just got my Equinox and this helps I will point out though one thing I noticed about the start/stop tech. It may be an actual life saver , protecting you the Chevy driver. At a red light , your in start/stop mode waiting patiently for light to change and ......... Green light , foot off the brake ......and some clown (might be Pennywise)blows the red light because he/she had a yellow Light and thought they could make it through the intersection .....the city red light camera takes a pic of the license plate and your safe in your because as you took your foot off the brake the ignition started causing “A PAUSE” (almost like a quick look both ways before ya cross the street) and you let the clown blow through the intersection without you getting t-boned by him/her. So ...in essence I kinda like the feature.........omg......is my age showing ?.........sorry let me put that away......my bad......... Last time I checked my license I am not a Top Fuel Dragster.......so I really got no need to slam the accelerator at the green to get to the next traffic light faster. Please use your own Logic. Live long and prosper.🖖🏻
I drive a 2017 Chevy Cruz for work. After I come to a complete stop, I quickly release and reapply the brakes and the car doesn't go into auto-stop. I think it fools the computer into thinking you're just in traffic. You have to do it at every light, but I find it easier... it just becomes reflex after a while..
same here. after a while it becomes second nature and if it does stop a light up pressure on the brake makes it start again without letting the car move.
Just saying "thank you" doesn't seem like enough. It's a horrible feature. You should have to go through this every time only if you want the feature. We just bought a 2020 Equinox & didn't catch it on the test drive. Probably because it wasn't up to temp. Seriously....this is priceless info. 😊
I think the reason why they do that its for emission and gas saver i think specially if you have in traffic... But i was worried about my starter u think it wont worn out fast the starters? hehehehe
Hey mate , there is a fuse you disconnect under the hood. It takes five seconds and stop start function will be disabled once and forever. It is the only permanent fix. I have successfully done it to my equinox
One thing that may help. If the ac is set to LO, it will never shut off. Just found this out during a heat wave. If set to 61 and up, start stop will engage. LO stays running
I have a 2020 Chevy Blazer Premier which has a button on the dash that turns that feature off. You need to do it every time you use the car. I do it out of habit but my wife likes the auto stop feature.
It really isnt that bad, after awhile you do forget that it is there and activates. I can promise you that it seems stupid but doesnt affect anything when you drive it
Just got a Chevy this year and has this "feature". I don't mind it but just wondering what long term issues it could bring. For example: Battery life decreasing. Starter life decreasing.
If your drive gear ever goes out, will driving in L6 or L9 helps your transmission🤗 and ir your auto stop doesn't work will that indicates that your battery is getting weak?...
Good info. I bet GM is making a lot more money selling new starters that wear out prematurely. Battery replacement cost is through the roof (300.00) since you need a special AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery.
Actually the frequency at which a starter needs to be replaced has gone up, as they now come with a heavy duty starter in the vehicles. I can say on my 2 personal vehicles I have almost 80k on 1 and the other is approaching 50k and neither have had to have one replaced. If your battery shows 1-2 volts less than what is required start stop does not ingauge then so it doesn't wear your battery down if it is getting older
@@ChevroletGuru That's good news on the starter. My daughter took her car into a local Chevy dealer today as she was having trouble with the start/stop. The power steering was jerking back and forth if she had her tires turned while the start/stop started. The dealer did a battery test to find out that it was getting weak and needed to be replaced. 300.00 for a new battery sounded sky high until I started to read about it and found out that the battery is an AGM which is higher than giraffe balls. Do you know if you can use a normal battery as a replacement? Thank you.
@@rdrodd1799 I would suggest looking for a similar battery at your local auto parts store or a place like Walmart. It sounds bad as I work for a dealer but the batteries are jacked up in price at least around me. When I replaced a battery on one of my older vehicles I saved almost $100 by going to auto zone
@@ChevroletGuru I retired from the car business after 30 years. It was getting too hard to train the young kids in sales anymore. I checked with the Auto Zone and others and the cheapest AGM battery was about 270.00. I just need to find out if you can use a normal battery instead. Seems like if you do and bypass the start/stop function that a normal battery would last. The research that I have come up with is that AGM batteries are the same as RV batteries that are deep cycle to last longer which would make sense if your car is constantly having to restart itself.
That's not prominently the Deactivating Thats Bandaid. How can people deactivate? What wire in the cluster the pcm the brake paddle which wire needs to be disconnected
This seems crazy to me that the cars are not coming with an on/off button. I have had start stop for years and like it, but all of my vehicles have always had buttons to turn it off. Most of the time I drive with start stop on but there are times (for example when I know I will be needing to turn quickly in high traffic situations) where I don't want my car to auto shut off - even if it costs me mere fractions of a second.
Now if I can just disengage the eco so that I can accelerate more quickly. I have the 2020 myself and hate this cars features. I’ve already had to replace my throttle body at about 70k miles. I will NOT be buying another Chevy. They just don’t make em as good as they used to back in the day.
So here’s a question on a 2020 equinox: I actually don’t mind the auto stop feature but noticed today running errands it did not engage. Couldn’t figure out why? It was 73 degrees out, a little windy, nothing out of the norm. Why would the auto stop feature not work? TIA
There are actually quite a few different reasons for this to happen. The most common on that I have come across is after a tear or two your battery will start to lose some power, if the computer senses 1 volt less power than normal it will not engage the start stop to avoid putting additional strain on the battery
Two years ago I bought my son a 2016 Malibu for his first car. I drove it for a couple days since he did not have his license yet. I had never driven a car with Start/Stop before and I didn't even notice the car was turning off. That's how smooth it is. My son thinks it's great since he believes it saves gas. I would prefer a car without this feature as it's not what I'm used to. But if you simply don't pay attention to it, you will barely notice it's turning off, if at all.
So you didn't start the car, how do I know that works? All the newer moldels with start/stop feature should have a backup feature to use a key to start them.
It works on ours.. Dealer told us about it beforehand.. I hate the start stop crap but my Lady Loves the lil truck so thats what she got.. Just seems like you couldnt get outa the way in a hurry if need be. (there is a back up key in the fob and the ignition is under the button) I'll tell ya one thing, that lil truck kicked ass when we had a ft. of snow this month.. I was verry impressed!
Thank you so much, didnt even know i could turn it off. I have read that this feature hurts the engine. Doesn't make sense to add it causes a problem fir you later.
Thanks for the video... Question we just bought a 2020 Traverse LT and i notice when in Drive position and my AC is on it wont engaged the auto shut off... Even if im in full stop is that normal right? But when i turn off the AC while driving. When i come in full stop the auto Shut down is engaged.
If you have AC turned to auto and the temperature is low enough it won't engage the shut off unless the cabin has reached the desired temp. It is another way to work around the start stop
Chevrolet accounted for the extra wear and tear on the starter, if you look at a starter in a 2018 Silverado vs one in the new gen truck you can see that it is a more heavy duty starter to account for the wear on it. You should expect the same life span out of on of the new starters as you would have gotten with an old starter that didnt have start stop tech on it
I have a 2019 Impala. Whenever I shift to M & try to shift up to 6th gear, I can an advisory on my dashboard that reads "Shifting Not Allowed" or "Shifting Denied". How can I bypass that ??
oh my gosh , WHY did they do that!! i just purchased a 2019 after my 2008 is having a few issues.. but nothing horrible.. i wish i would of known.. i would not of bought it .. the question is WHY did they put this on these vehicles? thank you for your video , very helpful.
It seems most people hate this system. GM could write a software patch and put an the option on the info system, dealer installed.... but then the service department wouldn't install as many replacement starters and batteries. Not to mention most wear and tear is DURING START-UP!!!
GM did account for the additional wear and tear on the starter and I can tell you my 17 Malibu is at 85k miles and havent had to replace starter or battery, cant say that about my Taurus I owned had to replace that starter every 50-60k miles and it didnt have stop start on it. The tech has been out for over 4 years on GM vehicles and I have not had a customer come in and say they replaced the starter so early from this new tech. Every manufacturer will have a few that have issues sooner but majority do just fine. You never hear from people when everything goes good so all you ever hear about is when it goes bad, can be said about anything these days
Sometimes after backing out of my driveway and putting it in L sometimes it wont go up to my highest gear, sometimes I'll be able to once I'm driving and am at a light where I can switch it. How can I change that to where I'm always able to get to L6, which is the highest for my car(a 2018 Chevy Malibu)?
I have a 2019 Equinox LT. I found that when I stop at say a traffic light, with my foot still on the brake, I shift into neutral, the engine will not shut off. With your foot still on the brake, you can then shift back into D and the engine will stay running.
Does driving around in low gear1-6 for long periods hurt the transmission and does it affect other features or effect gas mileage , traction control ect.
To the best of my knowledge it doesn't hurt the transmission or anything else. I have been doing it on my wife's Malibu for over 3 years now and no harm yet
There's a guy on here posting unhook the hood latch electric wire the wire that shows its locked . But on my 2020 equinox it worked and it stopped the auto start ,but my key fob remote start feature stopped working till I hooked the latch wire backup
Hey mate , there is a fuse you disconnect under the hood. It takes five seconds and stop start function will be disabled once and forever. It is the only permanent fix
When I park the car, it shuts off & 'Immediately' comes back on when I put it in (P). When parking at a curb, the car quits, comes back on then makes a loud clunk when put in Reverse. 2018 malibu. This useless feature is not good. Even a clown would know that.
Hey mate , there is a fuse you disconnect under the hood. It takes five seconds and stop start function will be disabled once and forever. It is the only permanent fix. I have done it to my equinox
He forgot to mention that only Chevy doesn’t have a disable button. I’m currently looking into a bypass module but I hear there is a small connector going off of the negative on the battery that you can disconnect to perimalty disable it.
Great video. Now if you could only tell us how to permanently disable "Lane Keep Assist". Would actually be great to completely disable the front camera.
I live in New York City and I LOVE THE START/STOP feature. I often get ANNOYED when the START/STOP DOESN'T ENGAGE when I am stopped at a long red light. In the summertime I will purposely TURN OFF my air conditioning when I am coming to a red light and I know I will be there for more than 6 seconds, so that the START/STOP feature will kick in. I leave the air conditioner OFF during my red light wait so I will be sure the engine will STAY OFF until I release my foot from the brake pedal. I've seen a UA-cam video where a guy experimented how much gas it takes to start an engine, and his experiment showed that starting an engine burns as much fuel as a car idling for SIX SECONDS.
What if you’re parked in a way that you have to put the car in reverse? Do you start out putting the car in L6 then reverse to back out? If so, does it automatically go back to L6 once put in L ? Or, do I have to manually put it back to its highest setting (L6 on my car)? If so, that would take a long time to do after backing out in a parking lot.
I believe that you must first go in reverse and then go to the L position. You can push the + button more times than 6. So when you put it in L just hit the + button to get going until you know you are in L6
So I just got a 2018 equinox and I did this and it was still doing it. Are you supposed to leave it in the "L" mode? Or do you put it back in drive? Doesn't driving in Low burn up your transmission?
Leave it in "L". My 2016 Malibu works this way also. The GM mechanic assured me my trans will shift exactly the same with this technique. You do have to select + to highest gear each time you shift out of manual mode or restart car.
@@manicmurph that would depend on which transmission you have, the 6 speed or the 9 speed, generally the 1.5L engine had the 6 speed and the 2.0L engine had the 9 speed
Even better, you can buy a little tiny. Short cable for about $14. Easy enough that even I installed it in less than 5 minutes. It will solve all your problems.
I cannot do this on my 2016 Chevy Malibu. I can set it to 2 but if I try to go higher, I get a message that says "shift denied." Now I can shift manually while increasing speed but I have to this manually by pressing the "+." Just like using a clutch but pressing the "+" as needed.
Hey so I tried this morning and it works. But with my 2019 Equinox it only allows me to go to 6 not 8 RPM. Is that ok?! And can I use the hack on highway and freeway driving?!
That is ok, and you can certainly drive in that mode on the highway. If you have any issues with it let me know and I will try to trouble shoot it for you
I have been told that there is a law in New York State that you cannot turn off your vehicle while at a stop sign/light. Why would this be a "feature" on a vehicle when it is illegal?
A friend has one just like that, and it jerks when it starts after being stopped. I don't know if its a transmission issue, or a sensor, but with only 16k miles it sure is a problem.
If they are lightly taking their foot off the brake it will start and jump, when they are ready to move again they need to remove their foot completely from the brake pedal
If you are going to drive with it in (L)ow gear you need to press the PLUS (+) button 6 to 9 times depending on how many gears your transmission is. Hope this helps

If it were up to me, I would disable it for my style of driving but I know there are places where it may save a minuscule amount. Remember, its all about that inaccurate EPA number on the showroom window. Minuscule changes sell cars - whether real or not.

My 2018 equinox seems to engage the shut off feature only in warmer weather. It doesn't seem to do it in cold weather.
@@inkey2 They use a whole bunch of parameters when deciding whether to shut off or not. Temp, batt voltage, history, etc so you'll find all sorts of conditions where they just stay running. I've also had them re-start before I release brake pedal when I'm sitting for a while and it needs to charge or circulate the coolant for the heater.
It's the worse design feature I have ever seen on a vehicle. It's absolutely is idiotic. The wear and tear it puts on a vehicle is apparent Why should people change their driving habits for a moronic EPA requirement.
Awesome
Thank you so much
Just got my Equinox and this helps
I will point out though one thing I noticed about the start/stop tech.
It may be an actual life saver , protecting you the Chevy driver.
At a red light , your in start/stop mode waiting patiently for light to change and .........
Green light , foot off the brake ......and some clown (might be Pennywise)blows the red light because he/she had a yellow
Light and thought they could make it through the intersection .....the city red light camera takes a pic of the license plate
and your safe in your because as you took your foot off the brake the ignition started causing “A PAUSE” (almost like a quick look both ways before ya cross the street)
and you let the clown blow through the intersection without you getting t-boned by him/her.
Really? Lol that's just as likely to happen as you getting killed from not accelerating and getting rear ended - like never. It's a dumb feature
Yeah take off slow and get hit..smh

I drive a 2017 Chevy Cruz for work. After I come to a complete stop, I quickly release and reapply the brakes and the car doesn't go into auto-stop. I think it fools the computer into thinking you're just in traffic. You have to do it at every light, but I find it easier... it just becomes reflex after a while..
Im trying this way too
same here. after a while it becomes second nature and if it does stop a light up pressure on the brake makes it start again without letting the car move.
This is what I do
I do this as well. No telling what unintentional damage is done to the vehicle by driving it in low the majority of the time.
Just saying "thank you" doesn't seem like enough. It's a horrible feature. You should have to go through this every time only if you want the feature. We just bought a 2020 Equinox & didn't catch it on the test drive. Probably because it wasn't up to temp. Seriously....this is priceless info. 😊

The most stupid thing Chevy has ever done. And that is a very long list.
Auto Start Stop Technology should have never existed
Not just Chevy, I know of someone who has a new Jeep with this and hates it.
@@cutt1293 also lka. almost caused an accident.
So everything else functions just fine like this? Gas mileage, transmission, etc?
One thing that may help. If the ac is set to LO, it will never shut off. Just found this out during a heat wave. If set to 61 and up, start stop will engage. LO stays running
I have a 2020 Chevy Blazer Premier which has a button on the dash that turns that feature off. You need to do it every time you use the car. I do it out of habit but my wife likes the auto stop feature.
You can buy a cable harness that you plug under the dashboard. Bought mine from Autostop Eliminator.
So glad I saw this before buying a Traverse!!! Such a shame...this feature ruins that vehicle for a lot of customers.
It really isnt that bad, after awhile you do forget that it is there and activates. I can promise you that it seems stupid but doesnt affect anything when you drive it
Just got a Chevy this year and has this "feature". I don't mind it but just wondering what long term issues it could bring.
For example:
Battery life decreasing.
@@rdrodd1799 to my knowledge a normal battery should work. But I cannot guarantee that as I do not work in the service department

This seems crazy to me that the cars are not coming with an on/off button. I have had start stop for years and like it, but all of my vehicles have always had buttons to turn it off. Yes some vehicles come with a off/on switch for that.
Unfortunately mine didn't. (2020 Chevy Equinox)...video was helpful..thank you.
I have seen some with a button to turn it off, but you have to push it each time you start the car.
Do you leave the shifter in L while driving or do you go back to D?
So you didn't start the car, how do I know that works? All the newer moldels with start/stop feature should have a backup feature to use a key to start them.
It works on ours.. Dealer told us about it beforehand.. I hate the start stop crap but my Lady Loves the lil truck so thats what she got.. Just seems like you couldnt get outa the way in a hurry if need be. (there is a back up key in the fob and the ignition is under the button)
I'll tell ya one thing, that lil truck kicked ass when we had a ft. of snow this month.. I was verry impressed!
The instruction were easily understood
Thank you so much, didnt even know i could turn it off. I have read that this feature hurts the engine. Doesn't make sense to add it causes a problem fir you later.
So, you’ve got to do this each and every time before you start the car for this to work?
Thanks for the video... Question we just bought a 2020 Traverse LT and i notice when in Drive position and my AC is on it wont engaged the auto shut off... Even if im in full stop is that normal right? But when i turn off the AC while driving. When i come in full stop the auto Shut down is engaged.
If you have AC turned to auto and the temperature is low enough it won't engage the shut off unless the cabin has reached the desired temp. It is another way to work around the start stop
My question is how does the engine start up in this mode? using the crank motor? will shorten the life of the starter motor?
Chevrolet accounted for the extra wear and tear on the starter, if you look at a starter in a 2018 Silverado vs one in the new gen truck you can see that it is a more heavy duty starter to account for the wear on it. You should expect the same life span out of on of the new starters as you would have gotten with an old starter that didnt have start stop tech on it
@@ChevroletGuru what about the fly wheel? That is a lot harder to change

Ok you don’t have to go into manual to disengage start/stop simple you turn on the max button on your climate control
Just bought a 2020 Traverse, and I don’t understand all the hate for start/stop tech. I can’t even tell when it engages or doesn’t 🤷🏻♂️
I'm confused do you have to leave it in that L mode for this to work? once I go into drive or reverse the Auto Stop kicks back on.

I have a 2019 Equinox LT. I found that when I stop at say a traffic light, with my foot still on the brake, I shift into neutral, the engine will not shut off. With your foot still on the brake, you can then shift back into D and the engine will stay running.
