    Retired automotive engineer here. Yes, auto manufacturers DO put in features that the MAJORITY of buyers HATE. NONE of these are mandated by the government. Don't believe a car salesman, they are TRAINED to LIE. 1) Forced Lighting a.k.a. Daytime Running Lights that cannot be turned off. There are MANY situations where you want to turn off all vehicle lights. There are over 400 Movie Drive-Ins in America today, or you might be waiting outside for someone at night and don't want to shine your lights in someone's windows. About 80 Million TONS of greenhouse gas are pumped into the atmosphere annually so people can drive around with lights on while the sun is shining brightly, (an exception is Toyota, 17% of their customers buy them because the lights can always be turned off.) On two occasions, General Motors petitioned the government to make daytime running lights mandatory. On both occasions, the U.S. Department Of Transportation denied the request citing there was NO evidence that driving around with your lights on in the daytime improved safety. 2) Engine Stop Start technology, this technology was developed for the SOLE purpose of improving the EPA, MPG number. In the real world it does nothing to save fuel, but it DOES wear out your engine faster. Nothing is harder on a car engine than when you start it. General Motors and some other cars, do not have the ability to turn this "feature" off. Overrides ARE available on the Internet to eliminate this dangerous feature. 3) Dangerous Navigation Systems that do not allow the PASSENGER to input an address while the vehicle is moving. Because of this common and dangerous feature, people are forced to do additional driving and maneuvering to get the car in Park and then back onto the road. Others, will use their iPhones to enter an address. The car computer knows if there is someone in the passenger seat. If there is a passenger in the a car, the navigation system should fully function. Most people hate “Nanny Cars”. There are hacks and modifications to overcome these defects. In all three of my vehicles, these evil features have been permanently eliminated.

      It is possible to modify daytime running lights. Police cars are modified. It's a bit of a job. The dealer told me to not mess with the auto stop/start feature because it can affect warranty, and where I am located it is illegal to modify it. I do my best to remember to press the button to turn it off manually. Where my sister lives in another part of Canada it is not illegal to disable this annoying feature. In the menu system of her vehicle it can be turned off totally. In my vehicle I can see the entry prompt to disable it, but setting it to OFF does not disable it! The setting is not effective in my SUV.

      On my van, if you disconnect the wire on the battery, you get a auto stop warning light on the dash, because the Auto stop is disabled. With the auto stop eliminator, it just remembers the switch position and doesn't cause the warning light to be on.
      On my friends Subaru, when you turn off the auto stop, you get a light on the dash telling you it's off, so the auto stop eliminator doesn't change that. It's vehicle dependent on what happens on the dash. With the Subaru, you could probably disconnect it at the battery and just see the same thing as if you turned the switch off.

    The starters on vehicles are electric yes but you must have a mechanical connection to the crankshaft to actually initiate the rotation of the components in the engine itself. The starter has a small gear that's driven by an electric motor. When you initiate the start sequence, the fuel pump turns on and primes the system, ignition coils are energized, the starter receives power and pushes the small gear forward to engage with either your flywheel or flex plate (manual or automatic transmission) then begins rotating the entire rotating assembly of the engine ( crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, camshaft(s) etc). The engine is rotating, the fuel starts flowing into the combustion chamber, spark is initiated and the engine co.es to life. Diesels are relatively similar minus the spark seeing as they work off of combustion solely on compression and heat.
    Point is yes the starter is electrically driven but always mechanically engaging.

    This function is potentially dangerous. If someone comes up behind you fast or you need to make an emergency quick start for some reason you have a delay which could cost you your car or even your life. Bad idea. That said, the more likely issue is the constant wear and tear on the engine and its components and the need for more maintenance over time.

    On a Nissan Frontier, stick a small piece of a small wire strap into the bottom of the switch, turning it on. Now every time you start the engine, the A.S.S system is disabled. Or you can pull the switch and jump over two connectors, the signal wire to the computer and ground and again, everytime you start it will be off. So, give that a try first. but it works on my 2023 Nissan Frontier and is turned off for good. And many other vehicles work the same way and it will save a lot of money not having to purchase an expensive device.

    The starter is a mechanical piece and it does have to engage and disengage every time to start the engine. There’s no other way to do this. • @cameron7652
      @cameron7652 Рік тому

      If this was the case there would have to be a mechanical outsidepart turning the starter... then youd need another one to turn the one turning the starter... and so on. A starters gear it electronically spun so i think its safe to say we can electronically turn over an engine by now.

    • @donaldknapik2706
      @donaldknapik2706 Рік тому +2

      Umm… not sure about that. A starter works when a button is pushed or a key is turned sending voltage to a coil which energizes and does two things: slide a yoke rearward which pivots and pushes a gear to engage the engine ring gear and close contacts which send battery voltage to the starter motor windings which cause the motor armature to spin. This armature is attached to the gear now engaging the motors ring gear causing the motor to spin and, hopefully, start the engine. The stop/start feature replaces the human interaction on the start and independently bypasses button/key switch when the brake is released.

    I was annoyed by this on my 2018 Equinox and I disconnected the hood wire and it worked, however, the Check Engine light did come on (after a while) and it bothered me. I bought a “jumper” wire on Amazon for $14.92 and proceeded to install it. But first, I wanted to make the Check Engine light go out. I hooked-up my OBDII code reader (hoping to clear the codes) but it must be outdated for this car bc it didn’t work right.
    I then tried the old method for getting the ECM to reset itself to factory specs by disconnecting the NEG battery terminal for 10-minutes. At the same time, I reconnected the original wiring (without the jumper) hooked the NEG terminal up and started the car. The Check Engine light was OUT.
    I was going to get it back to normal (shutting off at stops) THEN install the jumper cable to eliminate that function and still prevent the Check Engine light from coming on.
    I set about test driving the car in a manner I’ve read for allowing the ECM to reset itself (but here’s what I did wrong) When I put the car in gear, I dropped it into L (low) out of force-of-habit and clicked the + button 5 times to put the car in LOW 6. (this is the fix I was using at first) I pulled out and immediately realized I had wanted to start out in D (drive) so before it shifted, I pushed the gear stick up to D. Guess what?
    The car doesn’t shut off at stops AND the hood wire is connected and there’s no jumper in the line. I decided to run the car for a while to see if it begins to shut off again.

    Auto Stop/Start is hard on the engine and the starter. It produces more engine wear because during the stop time the oil pressure is at zero. There is more wear on the starter and Bendix gear. After warranty the customers are paying the cost from the extended wear. I always turn it off as soon as I start my truck.
    There are some adapters that can be bought that plug in to the trailer connector that will disable this annoying feature. When trailer lights are connected the auto stop/start is supposed to be disabled.

      If you are parking, your steering wheel and brake pedal inputs are telling that to the car, it doesn't stupidly shut off while parking. It doesn't shut off when reversing.
      It only shuts off when all of these things are true:
      - The battery has enough charge
      - The car's not too hot
      - The steering wheel is relatively straight and not moving (maybe you're stopped for a turn, it gets that, too)
      - The brake pedal is held pressed past the biting point OR parking pawl (P gear) is set
      As soon as you even breathe on your steering wheel or let go of brake, it turns on and starts creeping. In manual cars, as soon as you press the clutch in to put it in gear, it turns on as well.

    I live in the UK. Not only do I have to turn off the stop start on my Suzuki every time I start up but I have to turn off the lane crossing warning too. Most of my driving is through towns where 25 % of my driving entails driving across lane markings to avoid lines of cyclists and parked cars! I have yet to find a way to permanently disable either of these features. Last time I drove through town with the stop start system on, It operated 26 times on a half hour journey. I refuse to believe that this will not shorten the life of any battery.

    Or he could have read the owner's manual and known that when it thinks a trailer is hooked up to it it automatically disables the engine start stop so he could have gone to Walmart and bought a $25 trailer light test plug and that would have done the job too it would have also added extra lights visible on the bumper for tail lights bright lights and turn signals and probably would have cost him less than this device.

      It's NOT a government mandate. It's used by auto manufacturers to pump up their mileage figures, nothing else. They will TELL you it saves fuel and pollutes less, but the real reason is just to make the gas mileage figures look better.

      Mine goes inline between the wiring harness and the switch. It doesn't draw power at all. There is a microchip in it that just stores the last setting. It's like a flash drive... It saves the last setting without needing power when the engine is off.

    I found a way to disable the auto/stop feature on my 2017 F150, buy unplugging it from under the dash near the break peddle. But when I do this, if I am hookup to my RV trailer. None of the running lights on the trailer work. I then have to re-plug the auto/stop connector. So, my question is this. With the AutoStop Eliminator installed, is there an issue when you are towing a trailer, does the trailer lights work properly????
