  • In this video I share some first impressions of samples of the Cragganmore 12 year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vs the Cragganmore Distillers Edition 2022 Single Malt Scotch Whisky and of the Oban 14 year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky Vs. the Oban Distillers Edition 2022 Single Malt Scotch Whisky. I got to try these in a virtual tasting I caught up on through Kensington Wine Market out of Calgary, Alberta. Both Distillers editions are 2022 releases Find out which of these whiskies I would buy if I had the chance.

    My fave wormtub ROSEBANK is now silent (may re-open...) but will take Old PUlteney any time. . . . Not buying a single D.E this year, too pricey, everything is "seasoned casked" = to me, this means short initial punch (same aroma as old editions) then quickly vanish, no depth.

      All but one of the 4 DE's I tried fits your description perfectly. They seem to lack depth and do a good job of obscuring the actual character of the whisky. The only Rosebank I tried was a 21 year old ex-Borubon and Ex Madeira cask bottling at Cask Strength. It was delightful. And likewise have been impressed by Pulteney Independents Bottlings lately. Would do some very dirty work for an Old Pulteney 17 Year OB. Cheers 🥃

    Great take on the core offerings and their DEs Matt. The DEs are pricey. I've been a fan of Craigellachie for a while, 13 is incredibly flavorful dram for the price and 17 is great too albeit at a significant price jump from 13. I have also really enjoyed the Oban Little Bay and have had 14 but 14 has gone way up in price so it's a pass for now. Talisker 10 is another good worm tub distilled dram I am currently enjoying and Glenkinchie DE is delicious. Slainte!
    Online article from 2017 on wormtub distilleries, Of the 118 operational Scotch whisky distilleries, only 16 have them: Ballindalloch, Balmenach, Benrinnes, Glenkinchie, Cragganmore, Craigellachie, Dalwhinnie, Edradour, Glen Elgin, Mortlach, Oban, Old Pulteney, Royal Lochnagar, Speyburn, Springbank and Talisker.

      Thanks Rohit! As you know I'm really fond of that Craigellachie 13. What a Gem! I have yet to try that 17 year? Do you think it is worth the price jump to grab a bottle? I have always thought better of it as on sale I can get 4 bottles of the 13 for the price of the 1.
      The price of the Oban 14 Year in North America is why I no longer have a bottle. It costs more than my last bottle of Springbank 15 year so yeah, I think I'll pass.
      So many of those distilleries are at the top of their game. One good thing I can say for Diageo is that they have been instrumental in keeping worm tubs around in more distilleries. Well done. Cheers 🥃

      @@whiskyonthewestcoast Hey Matt, I think Craigellachie 17 at $200 is not worth diving into IMO. As you mentioned, you can get multiple bottles of 13. I grabbed it along with Talisker 10 in Canmore when I was vacationing in Banff last summer. The guy at Every Wine had a couple of bottles and he threw in 10% off. I couldn't refuse. Oban 14 is a pass at the price it's at unfortunately.

    that herbal bitter note always interested me in Cragganmore, but id not buy the official releases since, 40%, filtered, colored and independent bottles are not really be found where i am or incredible expensive sadly.

      @whiskyonthewestcoast  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, I wanted more spotlight on that herbaceous note. I'm gonna watch for an ex-bourbon Cragganmore Independent at a fair price. I fear I may have given myself an impossible task. Cheers 🥃

    Distiller's editions? They sound more like the Cooper's editions

      Ha! No kidding. "What can we do with this one? Throw it at another cask for 6 months? Sure thing, that'll sell!" Cheers 🥃
