Ah those hand written notes, they just warm the blindfolds of my heart. Oban 14 is a roller coaster for me as well. I remember first trying it and thinking it wasn’t that special. Then at a friend’s house he convinced me to try it again and it was much better than I remembered. On my bottle I get a subtle sherry on it and on some days peat and others not so much. A good dram all in all though, as you say to spend some time with to see how it changes and opens up.
Oban 14 was the first whisky that hit me with several layers of flavor when I tasted it... Since then, I have had the Oban Little Bay and the 14 Distiller's Edition, both great whiskies in their own right... It's been a while since I had the 14, and every time I go to the liquor store it's beckoning... I will have to buy it again soon. This is a great review of a great whisky.
Just bought a bottle for $90 USD before Christmas, love it sweet, Spivey, I don't get the smoke guys but then again I am a Lakh root 10 guy! Scott, sorry about your taste buds, 72 days, hope they come back soon. God bless you guys! Big Ray the piper from Flint
Bart, you nailed it with the 43%abv! I reckon you just needed to go one step further to break down the front door and scotch it! Oban is really great to visit - both the distillery and the town. Great seafood restaurants, friendly people and fantastic old pubs. What else do you need? The staff at the distillery are really helpful and ready to give you all the time you need for your tasting. Even your dog seems to sniff a winner. Cheers!
Your Dummy reviews makes us Dummies enjoy the whisky journey. Lots of fun, enjoy the Dummy stories, look forward to the Dummy reactions to the drams. Way to go. Enjoying a Rob Roy with a gift of Covington Scotch (46 apv), bought in the 1980’s for a wedding gift. From the City of Champions. 😎
I love this malt. I get a great mix of sweet and savory with this dram. The subtle brine and light sweetness compliment each other like a good salted caramel. Great stuff. Slainte', Dummies!
Very interesting! Makes me want to go out and buy a second bottle. I bought a bottle way back and I don't remember any details. The taste sounds interesting. My tastes have also changed. Thanks! ...Thanks for the warning on that first shout out... you surprised me on the second one, by the third I had caught on... Cheers!
As always a great review. Your recommendations and reasoning have come a long way and serve the community well. Not sure about the matching shirts however.
good job guys. I have seen your transitions over time and I can say that you guys have come so far in a fairly short time. Maybe more re-reviews are in order
Awesome t-shirts guys. I'm a brand new fan of ARDBEG. Looking at comments about being stuck in the dark side. I hope I didn't ruin it for myself by jumping from JW Double Black to Ardbeg 10. I'll have to keep an eye out for this one to go on sale too.
Ardbeg 10 is a great starter, but it probably scares a lot of people off at the same time. I didn't like peat at first and it took me quite awhile to warm up to it.
Scotch Test Dummies I’ve heard that if you drink black coffee (which I do) you will like peated whisky. I’ll have to test it on others to come to a conclusion.
Oban makes some gorgeous drams no doubt, I love the 18 and have 2 of those. Check out the Distilllers Edition oh yeah worthy of a buy. Cheers Scott and Bart
Honey Nut Cheerios and a Grapefruit halved with sugar on top should officially be renamed the "Oban Breakfast". This spirit to me is the classic "Highland Style" heather & honey malt. Have you had the Oban Little Bay? As the OB14 is more honey with citrus, the OBLB is more citrus with honey IMO. Either Way, after buying several of their expressions, there is definitely an "Oban" flavor profile. Either way, Bart was spot on with his Dalwhinnie 15/Glenkinchie 12 comparisons. Throw in the Cragganmore, & you could have a 4-way shootout called "Stirring the Honeypot" 😄 One thing I would like to point out Bart is something you said yourself: "I have a hard time detecting the subtleties". Maybe it is time to come to the Light Side of the Scotch. After awhile of picking out subtle flavors, you might find that even the peat bombs have more flavor because you can also taste what is behind it. Just do it for Peat's Sake! 😀 Cheers Dudes....err....men......oh whatever! Later Dummies!👋
Of course I had to go back and rewatch the first review..classic. When Bart first says Scotch Taste Dummies we can just see Scot’s expression of “what did he just say?” Also was that the first time we hear the board game talk as well? Also a little hint of the JA appearance perhaps thrown in towards the end?
I thought revealing the 14 year age was going to give it away. Glenkinchie, by the way, is one of the few remaining lowland malt (excepting the new distilleries that seem to be popping up every month these days). I'm not a huge fan of Oban but I haven't had it for a few years. I'm going to crack open a bottle today in honor of Bart. DRAGON MUTHA!!
Ok you asked for it. I wheelbarrowed about 3 yards of mulch yesterday, in hot weather, had a few beers during, had nothing to eat but nacho chips and very spicy picante with, and smoked a big cigar after sitting down. Perfect time for Oban 14! Not really, don't ever taste a whisky like that. I'm really not sure if I could tell it was a scotch. Today though different story. Very polite, I would have guessed speyside if blind. Very and I mean very similar to Balvenie. Who knew, maybe I'm still dizzy. Nothing to write home about but I'll go with 87/100. Slainte dummies
Is Bart perhaps thinking of Namor the Submariner from Marvel? Namor would drink Ardbeg I bet. Captain America would definitely be a bourbon guy, Iron Man would be into Macallan M!
Don’t be too hard on yourself Bart. The truth is Diageo is making all of their single malts more homogeneous these days for mass appeal. 25 years ago Oban 14 had a distinct maritime profile (smoked oysters, brine, salt air, ozone). It’s is all but disappeared now. It is now just a middle of the road safe dram. I rarely buy it anymore.

i need to go look for the peat. thanks George.
Always fun to hear you work through these blind tastings. I enjoy this one and it is probably time to go get another one of these, it's been a while.
it really surprised me for the better. Scott
That was my first ever single malt, I have never looked back. One of my favorites for someone who wants a good, complex dram.
yes it is!

that it is Foodquig! thanks!
Need to revisit this one, had it early on in my journey & wasn’t enjoyable. Thanks for the shout-out boys. Love what you do! Cheers
Thanks Fisk
I felt the same way, didn’t really like it. Will give it another shot.
I've only discovered this one in that last year or so and I just love it. It has a nice maritime/salty character that is subtle and unique.
very nice, its a good one. thanks Richard

thanks Ray from Flint!
One of my all time favorites. Always have a bottle or 2 on hand.
i can see why!

Great review and great idea! I think we would all enjoy seeing a re-review of some of the classic whiskies from your early years.
we do need to revisit some of the early ones.

very nice, PghPhred210! and thanks!
You two sure have succeded in making whisky fun. The actual whisky being reviewed is the secondary reason to tune in
BOOM! Thanks Mark
I love this malt. I get a great mix of sweet and savory with this dram. The subtle brine and light sweetness compliment each other like a good salted caramel. Great stuff. Slainte', Dummies!
yes! excellent fermentedgrains!
One of the steadfast standards. Nice one. A little longer I reckon Bart coulda got there, he was close.

thank you amflyer68.
Oban makes some gorgeous drams no doubt, I love the 18 and have 2 of those. Check out the Distilllers Edition oh yeah worthy of a buy. Cheers Scott and Bart
haven't had either. i believe i've seen both here and almost picked up the 18 year as it seems as if it was reasonably priced.
very interesting destillery! a junction between highland and Island. i wish they had a bottling with 46% abv non-chill-filtered
would be very nice
See this at $55 as a sale item on-line so will give it a try. Sounds so good.
definitely nice for that!
This is the one that started for me, 2007-08. Still in wait for the Seagram's OV
its a good one to start with.
Nice review, guys. Groves has the Little Bay expression for $31.99 this week
saw that, great buy!
I like this series, for fun as an extra dynamic I think you should score Bart’s performance! 😛
good call.
Bart without the beard👍 Back when he was on Yellowstone. 🐎🐄
wow - the two of you have come a really lone way - CONGRATS!!!
Bam...Aint that the truth

That IS the shirt I'm looking for.
find it did you? hmmm?
Haven’t seen a lot of reviews on this. Bart got the region right. This is smooth, subtle dram.
it was very surprising.
Bart, try the Glenkinchie Distiller’s Edition. Think you will like it.
Pretty impressive! Bart what’s that stemmed nosing glass you’re using?
Haha the reveal - ohhh?!?
Cheers guys🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃
Mark
thats the Riedel Cognac glass that he's using and he loves it.

The early days of the Dummies...And I think it was the first Board Game reference
