Oban and Talisker are probably my favorite Scotch Whiskies. Made just across the water from each other. They share some of the sea flavors. Great for sipping by the fire on a winter evening.
+Kris Gasteiger I find I usually like a peaty scotch or a heavy bourbon for really cold nights. Oban and Talisker remind me of summer and spring. Maybe it's a good thing to be reminded of those during the winter but i count on the high ABV to warm me up!
Oban is no where near the Isle of Skye where Talisker is made....Oban is near the isle of Mull tho where my fav Scotch is made...Tobormory 10 year
I planted trees in Scotland for 2 years for the Scottish forest commission. I was based on the Isle of Mull across from Oban. Not many lookers in Oban hahaha
Maybe that's why they started making whisky!
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary haha probably! You should check out Tobermory 12 year single malt! Its my personal
I picked up a bottle yesterday and enjoyed Oban 14 for the first time.
It's an elegant whiskey with a fine taste. I would buy it again, to be sure!
I'm glad you're enjoying it. It's still awesome whenever I have it
Received a bottled as a birthday gift from my son some years ago & have continued to purchase & enjoy it ever since. Your best word to describe it in the entire review: ‘delicious,’ as it truly is. Greatly appreciated the review.
No problem Eric, I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Bill, you know I take everything you say into consideration because honestly from the start of your reviews to now, I’d say that you can actually work for a master distiller and be so successful. You’ve come along way since you started. You’re a genuine person and wouldn’t recommend anything you wouldn’t want. Thank you Bill.
Wow I remember this bottle casing! great content
A bit late but I'm sipping a dram of this as I'm watching. I love this and it's a staple for me. Despite having tried Arran 10, Bunna 12, Quinta Ruban, Glen Scotia 15, Deanston 12, Laga 16 and many more, this just hits the right spot for me. Love the oilyness. Also, a couple of drops of water opens it up.
I frequently get Oban at bars
Went and done a distillery tour up there last year. Really good tour and only about £15, get to try the 14 as well as stuff straight from the cask and you also get a Oban Glencairn to keep. Really like this whisky and its slowly becoming my favourite. Also if you go to Oban go check out the seafood shack it's amazing.
Will do!
I did it in 2017... very good
Another great review WD. The anecdotal reference to your first taste of Oban was an interesting personal touch too.
Its amazing how the senses interplay with ones memories to create redolent moments from a simple sip or nose.
It's not all about the ABV or ingredients I guess. Good company and experiences can turn a decent dram into something nostalgic, or mythic even.
Based on your review, I thjnk I will have Oban as my first foray into Scotch.
This is one of my Dad's favorites, it's a little pricey for me, but I do get to have it every Thanksgiving when we get together.
Very proper review. Great work and well done. I will go for that boy in 2018.
Thank you for working out!
Special Greetings 🇩🇪
+mosesumike I'm glad to hear it! Happy New Year!
Little bay was the first whiskey I ever had and what got me into whiskey and your channel
Thats a good one to start with!
Whenever I try a new whiskey, I sit down with your channel, so as always, I have the product to hand. I think I paid around $70 for my bottle at Costco, although I've seen it for less at Total Wine. I like that it's 43% proof, and it's very smooth, and has a nice honey-taste going down, but I wouldn't say that it stands out, at least not for the price.
I'll admit, it's been a while since I've had Oban 14 and I really liked it back then, but I'd be curious to know if I still would like it as much.
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I certainly agree with your review, that is, that it's worth getting as it's delicious, approachable and easily available (like I said, Costco), but for the price, your wonderful channel has taught me that there are more interesting offerings.
Glad I could save you some cash! Any idea what you want to get instead?
nice review Bill. We need to revisit this one, we did it early on.
+Scotch Test Dummies Thanks! When you've reviewed over 400 bottles, I imagine your recollection of individual bottles is muddled a bit.
Great review as always. Gonna have to try and find a bottle, it sounds really good
+Benji ashley it sure is!
Superb review into the Oban 14yr, love this expression and really want to try the 18yr which is an US exclusive.
Another great one!
Buy it , stock it, great advice. I buy this bottle and it is empty before so many others. And the maritime "salt." Great. Agreed!
Began with Glenfiddich in 1973 at $12.50. And Levit. 3 years ago I found Oban. My new favorite. Also have 14&15 year old Fiddich, Glen Morangie, 15 yr Glen Grant 100proof, and Laphroaig 😱. Strange stuff, that.
Hi WD , another GR8 review , U been reading my mind , that one is on my "to try" list !!
Odd , Lemon & Salt for the nose , with an oily taste , it certainly does not sound like The Dalmore . I find that to nose very sweet , like a bitter sweet combined with a smoke , The taste of The Dalmore is very much sherry / smoke / dark chocolate with hints of sweet fruits like apricots. I have never noticed any lemon or salt , sound interesting , thanks .
I hope you and yours have a super New Year and all my best , Cheers :) G.
The 14 Oban is good, but the Distiller's Edition is just excellent. The finno sherry aging seems to add a lot to it. Thanks for the review!
+ruskiimperial I'll need to try it
I literally just saw this Oban 14 on the show Billions on Showtime.
Bill:
Thanks for the review. This is a Coastal Malt on my list to try along with OLD PULTNEY 12 y.o. I am intrigued by the spicy nature of OBAN 14.

It's great stuff. The bottle didn't last long after this video
Tobormory is my fav Isle Scotch. Iv been to the distillery when I lived in Tobormory. It’s good shit
I’m new to whiskey.... you just got my attention with this scotch. I will try and find a bottle
Solid scotch for sure. Still a favorite of mine
Got it for Christmas! Awesome review
If you enjoy this you would actually really like the Game of Thrones Night's Watch bottle that just came out
Oban is a wonderful whisky, love the hickory overtones
OBAN 14yo is the best tasting highland scotch whisky.
Only critique is chill filtration and addition of E150 caramel coloring !!
Other than that the best whisky and can never go wrong 🥂
It's a personal favorite of mine
Definitely a good one to keep in stock🥃💯👍
Good one Bill,thanks.
+Triplecap Thanks Triplecap!
From your description it sounds like it has the same flavor profile as a Highland Park 12. Would that be correct? If so how do the two compare?
Thanks
Bill, have you, or will you do a review on some of the Weller bourbons? I know they're basically impossible to find here in PA, but other states have significantly better luck than me. Maybe that's actually an idea for a video - rare bourbons and if they're worth the hype?
+Michael Buckwash Only problem there is that i have to find them too! Which is tough.
I like your review. Much closer to what I experience.
Love this whisky
Oban is pretty tasty IMO, but it’s a bit pricey in MI for what it is also. Otherwise I’d have it more probably.
In the video you said it's bottled at 86 proof but in your intro it says 90. Would you be able to clarify? 😁
+Jonathan Foong It's 86. I forgot to update my graphic
The Whiskey Dic no worries :) love your reviews and makes me want to try it all!
Bill, Looking to buy my first bottle at around $60. Cheers!!
Ohhh I'm jealous of you. I wish I could taste this one again for the first time. Enjoy!
You need to try Lagavulin 16!
I have the quarter cask in my cabinet. I need to break into Lagavulin either way. Doing the research on brands is what takes a long time with this channel. Doing whisky reviews is easy.
For me the flavors are not very well integrated… but i would drink if it offered…is 60€ in my market… at 65€ i get Lagavulin 16… different but much superior for almost the same price
Yeah, where I live our cops decide whether it's safe for you to drive. You must have absolute zero, otherwise the situation can escalate very quickly, including a real jail time. That's why responsible drinkers here carry alcometers.
As a beginner Oban 14 felt like a bit plain whiskey among all the others that I've tried so far. But to be honest the competition was very strong. I definitely don't say it's bad in any way, but I wouldn't say I'd be excited about it either. It's just a smooth solid drink I would never refuse, that unfortunately lacks any special characteristics.
Drank water for 1 hour and half? You were 100% still intoxicated and would have still been way over the drink drive limit. Just because you feel safe to drive doesn’t mean you are safe to drive.
I know right soooooooooooooo low IQ thing to say
MadQmike I wouldn’t say low IQ but just unaware. I know people who have 3 double vodkas and then drink a pint of water and say “I’m fine to drive” my only issue with drink driving is more often than not you as the driver survive but the people you hit don’t. Crash and break your legs for all I care but when you run over a 7 year old that’s what doesn’t sit well with me.
Just to clarify yes I did feel like I was okay to drive but I knew I wasn't great to drive I shouldn't have driven but I did. I made a poor decision and thankfully it didn't end bad for anybody I use Uber a lot more now
The Whiskey Dic fantastic. Mistakes are meant to be made so as to learn from them. I wasn’t judging you just making a point that although unlikely it could have ended tragically.
Just to play devils advocate....it depends on how much you drink and how long in between drinks.
Great review. I tried it however, didn’t like it.
I'm sad to hear that this is still one of my favorite whiskeys
My go to !!!! I love Oban 14 my everyday scotch
Maybe one day I will be willing to pay $90 for this.
Yea thats a tough price.
Hello Bill:
Finishing my bottle of GLENGOYNE 15 y.o. tonight. It is another Highland. Here are my impressions.
SLÁINTE
Mike
GLENGOYNE 15 y. o. Highland Scottish Whisky
3/3/18
43% ABV Uncolored with air dried Barley; Aged in Sherry casks from Jerez, Spain and Bourbon Barrels from the USA.
This is an end of Bottle review.
COLOR: Lightly Tinted Red, with Many Legs running variously.
NOSE: A rich lightly sweet grape note
PALETTE: Light Creamy Mouthfeel with a light yet full grape note with some pepper rising from my tongue to add complexity, rounded mouthfeel as I roll it around.
FINISH: Sweet and Creamy going down with a light pepper tingle in my throat. There is a mouthwatering sense, with the light sweet grape note lingering.
1 drop of distilled water
NOSE: Lighter grape note
PALETTE: Lighter yet silky mouth feel with some drying on the outer edges of my tongue. The rich sweet grape note rises with pepper as I swirl it around.
FINISH: Peppery going down yet the rich grape note is underneath. Drying on my tongue before a mouthwatering sense brings back the rich sweet grape note.
2 drops of distilled water
NOSE: Very Light Sweet Grape note yet still pleasant
PALETTE Light Sweet and dry arrival with the sweet grape note in the background. Very Dry mouth feel as I swirl it around hints of wood, lightly spicy
FINISH: Dry and Peppery with Tingling on my tongue yet a much lighter sweet grape note lingers as does the mouthwatering sense.
This has been an excellent taoscan (taws son) Irish Gaelic equivalent of Dram, tonight. The air in the bottle has opened up this 15 y.o. very nicely. My first glass was still tight and with each glass it has opened up. I loved the 12 y.o. and now I am experiencing the full pleasure of the 15 y.o. I love the way the basic rich sweet grape note and pleasant mouth feel lingered though changed slightly as more water was added. Highly Recommended!
I have friends that are J.D. shooters. They don't want to try other whiskies. But i have one friend who will shoot any whiskey hates scotch though. I'm the only one who loves to taste whiskey. I do have a friend ?😁 who likes to taste brandy. Ugh! Lol
+wildernessman You've got a friend in me!
Man, I was JD shooter just because of their dope marketing. Especially the moment where Neil Patrick Harris is drinking it while driving in Harold & Kumar movie. It made me cringe every shot and we were flushing it down with a coke. At that time we thought JD was the pinnacle of industry and never knew that good whiskey existed. Until I tried Wild Turkey (also saw it in the movie) and then (ironically) Ron Swanson introduced me to Lagavulin 16 and it opened the doors for the whole new world. I do like cognac too tho, which is just a fancy name for brandy. As a beginner I'd probably wouldn't really be able to tell the difference from whiskey anyway :D
Cut the bull and get to it!
I reckon I can run my Lambo on that stuff
I really hope that you do not choose to drink and drive anymore.
You couldn't take a cab home? that's super irresponsible of you driving even after one shot of whiskey.
+J Nielsen Tomer You're not wrong. I was very sober before I drove though. If anything I was too tired as it was about 2:30 a.m.
