I had just poured a dram of the standard 12yr (I have always enjoyed this one) when I saw your video. I look forward to working my way through the range. Thanks for the detailed comparison!
Excellent presentation, quick decision no swishing of the whisky as if it's a mouthwash or wandering into space trying to make up your mind. I enjoy Irish whisky immensely, especially Redbreast and have the entire collection but so far only consumed the standard 12yo.
My brother is a huge fan of Irish whiskey. He tried my barrel proof bourbon and loved it so I’m picking him up the cask strength redbreast based on your review. Thanks very much!
+peter white - I think you're going to love the unique tropical flavors in the RB21! I hope you have a great holiday season and a happy birthday! Cheers!
Another great video review. I have the 12,15, 21 and Lustau versions. I will be buying the 12 Cask after watching this. By the way I love the look on your face every time you go to pick up the 21, it is a very special drink.
I've really been wanting to get into Irish whiskies. I've had the standard Jameson before, but that's far from exciting. Thanks for giving me some direction! Loved the video as always. Keep up the good work.
I like your no nonsense approach in this review ! You gave us what we wanted to hear in a straight shooter approach to all of the subtleties . There are two guys - who may be very good , but they clown around too much in my opinion . I've yet to try Redbreast 12 . I will soon !!!
my first video of your show....love your style...friendly detailed and informative...kudos. the redbreast 12 is my first irish whisky....(I usually drink craft beers, wine, port and bubbly)...but after watching your show (and the whiskey vault) i had to go out and buy my first bottle of whiskey...will try it shortly...hope i'll enjoy it and lead into scottish whiskies, too.
Thanks, that was an incredible review and comparison. I've only had the 12. I drank it while I watched the video. I love it. Maybe the best Whiskey I've had. I'm looking forward to trying the 15. Cheers.
+WINELIGHT MEDIA - Thank you! I'd recommend you try the Lustau Sherry edition as well. It, the 12 cask strength, and the 21 year are my favorites from them. Cheers!
I just tried the new release of Johnnie Walker Green Label. Wow, fantastic! You should do a comparison of the Johnnie walker labels. I would really appreciate your expertise on the different labels. Cheers!
August 9, 2020 - I’m focusing on Irish Whiskey for the next couple months and comparing notes with other Whisky Tubers. I’m doing the RB 12, CS and Lustau I’ll have to see if I can find a 21.
That's awesome Erik! I recently tried a new 21 and while it had some of the tropical notes that my older one has, the viscosity was down a notch and the rich papaya and mango were less intense, making a under-ripe pineapple note the bright star. It's still a unique and tasty Irish, but we're hoping with some air it'll balance more. Take care and cheers!
Great video comparison. Just tried out the 21 and it really is a unique and amazing experience. I don’t get so much the mango, but definitely pineapple, guava, and passion fruit.
Great comparison vid. It seems like we perceive the flavors of the standard 12 the same way and I like how you describe what you're tasting - lookingforward to watching more of your reviews
Just ordered that basic 12y old. Basicly havent heard anything but compliments even for that 12y old. They call that cask strength 12y old "Priests bottle" in Ireland, because it was the go to whiskey for priests who were closet drunks :DD
I'm obsessed with red breast 12 anything that is similar as in Canada where I'm from is 78$ 750 ml bottle as I go through it so frequently I would like to drink something else on a Tuesday nite and save the RB 12 for more relaxing times thank you.....
Those type of tropical flavors in Irish whiskies develop not from anything being added, but come about from a combination of many factors. Most likely is a combination of short chain alcohol esters from the barley and the compounds developed in oak cask during long maturations. It's fairly common among them when they hit 20 years and up. Yes we do occasionally see it in the Scotch world, but it's not nearly as common. Cheers!
Great video! I just bought a bottle of the 21 yr old. I would love your advice here - I don’t drink tons of whiskey and I’m saving it for when a buddy of mine is home from the States back to Ireland. I was thinking of getting samples of other whiskeys to taste alongside the 21 as almost taste comparisons before jumping into the 21. What are your thoughts? Thanks a lot
Nice! Try the standard Redbreast 12, Lustau Edition, and maybe a Yellow Spot or Red Spot and/or the Bushmills 16 or 21. That sounds like a great "Welcome Home" to me. Thank you and cheers!
Thank you for the review of the line up - are there any other whiskies that have strong tropical flavours? (i'm sure somewhereI heard irish pot still gets this but only on the 20+ style older whiskies)
You probably heard that from me. Most Irish whiskies over 18-20 years old pick up tropical notes. In the Scotch world it’s hit and miss. So it’s probably best to stick with the older Irish if that’s the profile you’re searching for. Cheers!
Opinion on Thick , Chewy mouth coating which one has MORE (prefer having): the Cast Strength , or the 15 ?. Please your expertise is appreciated. Thank you. I may consider the 21 in the later future age ; I love most Tropical fruit - really yummy.
By the way, have you had Santa Teresa 1796 Solera rum ?.
I'd still go with the CS over the 15. Another one to consider is the Lustau version. It may be even thicker than the CS. Hopefully one day you'll try the 21, because it's stunning! Santa Teresa 1796 was one of my very first rum purchases and I do enjoy it. Cheers!
Have you gotten a chance to try the Redbreast Lustau? If so, what are your thoughts about it? I have already purchased a few bottles according to your recommendations. Thanks!
I enjoyed Redbreast Lustau, and thought it was a solid value. Sadly, I haven’t added a bottle of it to the collection, but if I do, I’ll see if I can review it. Cheers!
Greetings and first time watcher here. I'm an old disabled vet who can only afford about $100 per year recreation spending, so I cant afford to buy something I end up not liking. Unfortunately, I'm also homebound so i can't go round to bars trying to taste what I'm interested. Its currently 2020 and I'm trying to decide on a bottle of Redbreast and the store near me has the 12 year for $65 and the 12CS&15 year both at $99. One thing I do not enjoy in a whiskey, is burn. I've got bad esophageal erosion and "hot" whiskey is noooo bueno, making me a big fan of the regular old Tullamore dew. Could you make a recommendation to me given what I've written for the most enjoyable for the cost, with the least amount of burn? Thank you very much!
Hello and welcome! If that’s the case, I recommend staying at 80 proof. If you feel like venturing out from Tullamore Dew, the Redbreast 12 would be nice or you could try Green Spot. Cheers!
@@LiquorHound Thank you so much for your advice here, along with your warm welcome! I've seen your review about the regular 12 year redbreast being a very iffy purchase so I'm going to try the green dot first.
Besides my other recommendations in my last reply, you could explore low-proof Canadian Whiskies since they’ve always prided themselves on being “smooth”/easy drinking. Cheers!
@@LiquorHound funny enough, I have. When I lived in Alaska one of my neighbors had a "problem" with McNaughton and offered me drinks of that all the time and boy oh boy was that ever smooth. On another note, I bought a bottle of what you recommended but haven't opened it because I saw a later video, rather, I later saw one of your videos reviewing Green Spot and saying it had black licorice notes in it, which I couldn't hate a particular taste more than black licorice so ill probably never open it. I spent the remainder of my years allowance on the Tullamore since its a safe bet. I'll definitely try the redbreast next year though, that sounds very nice. I love your channel and appreciate you messaging me and thinking about me, very much. Thank you for that. Really. 🙏
+LiquorHound Ah ok. The Teeling SM 15y and the 14y Single Cask should be amazing but I haven't tasted them yet. I also wanna buy a bottle of Yellow Spot bc I really liked the Green Spot.
Great video, may I ask.. does the unmalted-ness element come through on these bottles (particularly the 15).. what % of malt would you say it is? Thanks LH
Thanks! I'd say on mine, the "unmalted-ness" doesn't come through nearly as much on the 15 as the 12's. The 15 seemed heavy and I believe the one I own had a twinge of sulfur from the oloroso cask, which covered that note. Percentage wise they don't say, so my guess is as good as yours. Cheers!
I wouldn’t say the 12 Cask Strength has “bite”, but rather “it’s full of flavor”. As for whiskies without “bite”, stick to lower proof bottlings (86 and below). Cheers!
Great video. The one and only Irish whisky I've tried and have is the 12yr. I was surprised how good it was. Just tells me that there are probably some really good Irish whiskys out there. I hear Bushmills 16 is suppose to be fantastic. What is your opinion before I explore that one. Thanks again.
Being that I have the RB 12 yr and like it, which would be your next bottle from the following 3. RB cask strength, RB 15 yr or Bushmills 16 yr. Thanks

Great whisky episode again, buddy. Well matured in knowledge casks with presentation style of triple-distilled smoothness. One question: do you ever add water to whisky? That 12-year cask strength is some strong stuff. You seem to handle it with no problems, but I was just wondering.
+ArtMorte - Thank you! I do add water when I feel a spirit calls for it, but usually only by the drop. I always try them first without water and then make my decision. This 12 year cs was really sweet and oily, so I didn't add water for a couple of reasons. One, I didn't want to take away from the mouthfeel, and two, I wanted to really see/feel the differences between it and the 80 proof version. Cheers!
Great video, man. Thanks. What batch of 12yr CS did you sample here, what do you recommend? I hear b1/12 was very good, but b1/13 not so good. I can't find b1/12 anywhere, but there are b1/15s and b1/16s available. I'm just not sure which to buy.
