First time I disagree with your reaction. I’m Irish. I live in Dublin. I’m east Ireland 🇮🇪 Dolores was south Ireland 🇮🇪. Children were blown up and their clothes were blown off them. This video is a masterpiece. Back when all that was happening, we had to fill out anti terrorist forms getting a flight to the UK. All Irish were shunned. That’s why she sings “ not my family “. It was a sad time especially for the people living through it all in the north of Ireland 🇮🇪. It was horrific to see bombs going off in the UK. I am proudly anti war. RIP Dolores amazing song writer and singer.

I am also from Dublin but live in England, I guess I am somewhat older than you and can tell you Irish were shunned in England as far back as the 1950's and 1960's,
many boarding houses in England carried signs saying "no blacks, no Irish", it was tough for my parents when that first moved here, long before the troubles.

    • @Cath1027
      @Cath1027 Місяць тому +9

Thank you for your comment. I’ve read up about those signs. In 1981 my sisters and friend went over every summer and had to fill out the form. We were all under suspicion. My dad would go over with my mam and fill the form out in Irish. My mam would beg him not too. They were always brought into a room for questioning. Very sad horrible times. I feel talks and compromise are what’s needed in every war. I had my son early August 1994 on the 31st the ceasefire was announced then in 1998 the GFA. I was delighted my son was born into a time when peace happened. James Blunts song “ no bravery “ is the real truth about war. A sad but true song.

thanks for the insight, I liked the boys painted gold but for the wrong reason. I got it so wrong but I thought they were little cupids or cherubs pointing arrows of love and trying to fire peace and love(and cupids in mythology are dressed that way anyway) and are getting upset with the hate and killing. Your answer makes way more sense

Right. The true indignity to the children was this war. This video gives just a small taste of that with the shocking imagery.

  • @ThorgrimThorvaldsson
    @ThorgrimThorvaldsson Місяць тому +42

The "little boys" are meant to represent the victims of senseless violence as cherubs and are clothed exactly as religious iconography depicts cherubs. It has nothing to do with the abuse of children. They aren't naked and they aren't depicted in a sexual light. People need to get over themselves. You've missed much of the powerful message this song imparts by being distracted by something that isn't there.

I think you would be best served if you researched her motivation for writing this song. In short it was in response to hearing about the death of children killed in a bombing in Warrington England in 1993. Dolores herself was in her early 20s when she wrote it - barely more than a kid herself. She was trying to make a point and I believe she achieved it, and significantly contributed to quelling the violence in the region at the time.

And just like during the Vietnam War, it brought out the passion of artists including musicians who produced amazing music. This was clearly represented in the Cranberries musical protest of the violence in Ireland.

Don't blame Maddy-she is looking at a 1994 production (I don't believe she was even alive in 1994) with 2024 eyes & so will have a different impression than those of us growing up/in adulthood during that time. In 1994 hardly anybody had a mobile phone & the few that did were mostly yuppies with a large block phone & antenna on in, barely anybody had a computer & those that did were using a system the size of a JPEG & weren't on the internet-which was incredibly basic back then, we had CRT televisions with four tv channels in the UK & a VHS player was our Netflix, Amazon Prime etc & your streaming music was a vinyl record player, tapedeck, CD player & a tape cassette walkman with uncomfortable headphones. Children were generally running around free in nature without much fear. Totally different world to the one Maddy has grown up in.

Humiliation rituals are real, I am not expressing this is one of them…I am just expressing this is something to be aware of.
When people who abuse power want to flaunt their authority they are like cats toying with mice…not like a dog attacking in a straight forward manner.
It is a game, if you notice the signs / indicators of power within the entertainment industry this is done continuously through exposing some and clothing others, showcasing dominance. Psychologically this CAN lead to feelings of inadequacy rendering the victims to feel powerless due to the dynamic melded into their psyche.
I understand that within the context of this video the children painted and barely clothed is meant as art, but I still do not support the utilization of minors as props for the sake of ‘art’…AND even if I am seen as going too far, I don’t mind as I would just like people to think.
We continually see children becoming victims and seem shocked EVERYTIME a new victim speaks up, but it oftentimes occurs slowly right in front of our eyes. I just want for us as people to think, even if you disagree…maybe you will see a video or movie sometime with a child who comes out later in adulthood as being abused for years upon years and you will be more likely to put the pieces together then.
      I love ya’ll ❤
I’m not claiming the Cranberries had any ill intent, but I am just wanting people to think.

@@MaddyReactions Well said, not sure about the US-but over here the safety of children after the hippie era hit was not great. Lots of stuff went on at the BBC when parents dropped their kids off to be on tv shows hosted by people like Jimmy Savile & Rolf Harris. Also photographers like David Hamilton who was clearly a nonce were bizarrely accepted in mainstream society-even though most of his work was photographing adolescent girls mostly aged 13-16 in states of undress or naked. He was 83 in late 2016 when allegations of sexual assaults were made by women who were his child models finally emerged. He threatened lawsuits, but days later his cleaning lady found him with a plastic bag over his head-having taken his own life.

The song is about 2 kids who died and many people injured in the UK from 2 bombs explosions caused by the IRA. The bombs were placed in the cast iron trash bins along the city pathways causing much shrapnel to kill or mutilate people. It is anti terrorist and also anti war when the war is fought for power & gain and innocents die for the greed of the warlords.

One of the kids in the video was in my class at school too, they had a brilliant time filming it their parents were there for the entire filming, and Dolores was extremely kind to all of them. The kids running around waste grounds was pretty much all we had back then. It was just houses and then big, vast waste lands, so we used to play football (soccer) on them, plenty of stones lying around to throw at the army vehicles, very different time. Understandably, the distrust and resentment is mutual, and that "Peace" wall that keeps growing higher seems to be all that keeps each side from acting out. I hope that the next phase of maintaining a peace involves building connections between the communities, and that they can grow together in time, before something (like Brexit) tears it apart again.

The 1916 line refers to the Easter Rebellion, where the Irish Republican Army (IRA) rose up against the British occupiers. 16 of the leaders of the uprising were executed. This was the opening salvo in the Irish War of Independence which the Irish won. While most of Ireland gained independence, Northern Ireland remains under British control. This was due to the large Irish Protestant population which were largely Scots and English imported by England to help control Ireland. There is no love lost between Irish Catholics and Irish Protestants, and each have their own terrorists' organizations, IRA for the Catholics and Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR, who wear orange on St. Patriks Day.) This led to three-decades of conflict between the factions and included British troops which is called The Troubles. While an anti-war interpretation is not inaccurate; the song is more about the internal conflict and terrorism. It addresses children being raised to hate each other. It also talks about people who are observing violent events from a distance and don't truly understand what is going on. This song works on so many levels and is justifiably considered a classic.
The Catholic religion plays a major role in Ireland's history of terrorism. The boys in the loincloths are representing Cherubs which are baby angels. Cherubs were likely stolen from the Roman god Cupid, the little guy who shoots lovers with arrows. The outfits of the boys in the video are consistent with religious artwork. The crucifix being another Christian symbol in the scene.
Finally, if you want a better understanding of the origins of the conflicts in Ireland read "Trinity" by Leon Uris.

here’s what Delores said about why she wrote the song. “There were a lot of bombs going off in London and I remember this one time a child was killed when a bomb was put in a rubbish bin -- that's why there's that line in the song, 'A child is slowly taken,'" O'Riordan told Songwriting Magazine. "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard - I was quite young, but I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' - that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension."
She told Vox magazine in 1994 that the song was written in part as a mechanism to grapple with her identity as an Irish citizen that did not support the actions of the IRA.
"The IRA are not me. I'm not the IRA. The Cranberries are not the IRA. My family are not. ... When it says in the song, 'It's not me, it's not my family,' that's what I'm saying. It's not Ireland".

To put it shortly: this is more about rebellion and civil unrest than war...and is religious at its core. Protestant Irish, wanting to remain part of the UK in Northern Ireland....and Irish Catholics in the South; Republic of Ireland. England was attempting to force their Protestantism onto the Irish...and resisting Catholics, well, basically said 'NO'. And so the IRA (provisional) were attempting to get/pressure the UK out of Northern Ireland...and there was bombing in England streets; and children were killed.

Maybe, if we saw the graphic impact of the events in Gaza, then maybe people might not be so slow to demand an end of the violence and suffering.
And expecting a 30 year old video to reflect modern day sensibilities seems like a pointless exercise to me. A rigged test that aging art is almost always doomed to fail.

Friend, children have been being abused since the beginning of time…we don’t talk about this within society often as it’s something most would rather not like to think about. Do you assume that Epstein’s and Diddy’s have not existed within the societies of the past? Anywhere there is an excess of power and wealth there have been these sorts of happenings occurring. Silence is violence in my opinion, and I am just attempting to train the eyes of my friends to question rather than just consume something in the name of ‘art’.
I feel the Cranberries did a great job showcasing the emotions of war and innocent lives, but I also feel that ‘art’ has been the only field that we continuously cheer on the usage of children who would within no other field be permitted to work. Even if you dislike my opinion, I hope you will at least consider this thought on your own.

@MaddyReactions Of course, I respect your opinion. I also enjoy your videos very much. I just happen to disagree with you on this occasion. As far as I know, the song and the video are pleas to stop the ongoing cycle of violence that literally kills children, as well as taking away their innocence and hopes of a better future through hateful indoctrination at an early age, ensuring the cycle continues into another generation. The cherubs are their guardian angels screaming for the vicious cycle to stop. They are meant to disturb you, but not for the risk of sexual exploitation in the video shoot, but the poltical indoctration (also lifelong abuse) of children at an early age leading them down a very dark path. On that basis, the images were valid and powerful then and remain valid and powerful today.
It is interesting how you say "Silence is violence imo" That is literally a line from the song. I think myself, yourself, and the cranberries are all concerned about children's wellbeing in the context of this song. I think the motivations of the makers of this video were 100% pure and sincere, and nothing untoward occurred. But you see child actors in a vulnerable position, and you aren't comfortable with that. That's a 100% valid position to take. I won't put my child up for a role in that video. So of course I see the risk you are concerned about.
Keep up the interesting reviews. I do enjoy watching.

Sometimes music can make the difference and this is probably a good example. Irish bands like the Cranberries and U2 began performing anti-violence music about the time when the landscape was right to bring the fighting to an end. The 1998 Good Friday Agreement has helped ease the troubles. But the situation still simmers right at the surface. You might say the musicians just read the temperature and went with the times, but I believe their message was integral to bringing about the agreement which has lasted to this day.

The video was not made for US sensibilities. The zombies in the song were the people holding onto the (admittedly horrific) British over-reaction to the 1916 Easter Rebellion and perpetuating the troubles and killing children even 100 years later. The point was after 100 years it was time to move on and forget. The song actually helped create a push to resolve the troubles, a sanitised US version would not have had the same impact.

two IRA improvised explosive devices hidden in litter bins were detonated in a shopping street in Warrington, England. Two people; Johnathan Ball, aged 3, and Tim Parry, aged 12, were killed in the attack. 56 people were injured. Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries, and five days later, Parry lost his life in a hospital as a result of head injuries. O'Riordan decided to write a song that reflected upon the event and the children's deaths after visiting the town
O'Riordan also wanted to add images with "an abstract message", saying it would represent "the beauty that we see in the world or that we care to open our eyes to" while the black and white footage of Belfast "symbolize the pain that’s there and we close our eyes to". She suggested herself painted gold, and Bayer added children painted silver and a cross that "symbolized Christ suffering and dying, and all the pain that was caused to him it is called art

I have bachelor's in criminal justice. One of the best classes I took was Terrorism, this was in 1987, and terrorism was on few people's radars. My professor explained at the beginning of the course that if I you wanted to fight terrorism, first, you needed to understand the terrorist. His first assignment was to have us read Leon Uris' "Trinity" so we could understand why someone would be a terrorist. You might find it hard to believe but people don't suddenly wake-up and decide I think I'd like to be a terrorist. There is a reason for a terrorist's actions and understanding those reasons can help in dealing with the terrorists. In Ireland there were terrorists on both sides of the fight. The treatment of the Irish by the English was horrible. The Irish Famine happened when the potato crop failed, and the English exported the other food items rather than letting the Irish use it for food. Approximately 1million people died which translates to 1 in 8 people dying. Much of Ireland's population fled to America which is where our large Irish American population comes from. This is just one of many injustices inflicted on the Irish. Also, if you are American realize that George Washington would be listed in history books as a terrorist if we had lost the war.

One of the few times I really remember hearing about other countries consistent problems growing up in the 70's-90's was the Irish/England civil war strife, the IRA were seen as a terrorist org by the word, but seen as resistance fighters in Ireland, and the English were very racist towards them. It was heartbreaking to hear about growing up. You'd hear about China or Russia as a potential threat to the US, but I don't really remember hearing about other countries internal threats except this one and it seemed like it happened several time each year and always talked about. If I remember this was about 2 young children killed by an explosion while either on mothers day, or while buying cards/presents for mothers day. Such a terrible act that led to one of the most influential and beautiful songs.
It's crazy it doesn't feel that long ago, I'm 50, but the world has changed so much and your reaction shows its not even in the public consciousness anymore. Pretty much only two ways to win a war....
-you either beat the other side so bad in battles that they no longer have a standing army so they surrender or you eradicate them.
-The other is you negotiate for peace after gaining leverage (winning enough so that the other side decides they would rather get something than nothing).
And I think the lives of children should always be considered when fighting. If you believe your side has the moral superiority then show it...don't target children and don't let them be a casualty to blast radius.
Like you said, in training/preparing for war, you demonize the opposition. You have to see them as less than yourself in order to pull that trigger or have the "stones" to set foot on their soil ready to ruin their day. But then you finally meet someone and have a conversation and you realize that had you been born in the same land you would have maybe been friends with the "enemy". You actually might share some "human" experiences. All of a sudden it isn't so "good vs evil". Maybe the person you are fighting is only fighting because you showed up uninvited to his back yard where his family is....maybe he had nothing to do with why you are there in the first place, but your army has been there so long that you both were children when the first domino fell that caused a war. Does killing him fix the issue? Or did you just give his son cause to take up arms against you and your army in the coming years?
Loads to think about lol. But ultimately, I hope we can all agree that children are innocent and do not deserve to be treated as less than.

The line not my family can be taken in a couple of ways-those doing the bombings & shooting somehow rationalise it that they are killing the 'other side' & so it doesn't matter-though that was flawed in another way-as Protestants & Catholics live together in areas & they had no way of knowing they weren't killing their own faith by detonating bombs. It could also be taken as people not reporting suspicions/facts to the police services-even though you know by not doing so that lives will likely be lost, although being a snitch there was a very dangerous thing. There was an earlier song by The Police over a decade prior about the troubles called Invisible Sun-the video was banned by the BBC as it showed images filmed there like this one & criticised the British Army/government in the lyrics.

here’s what Delores said about why she wrote the song.

Given the event behind the song itself the video does exactly what it should. You see children, one minute just pretending to be "soldiers" in the streets and then you see them painted gold.

what my point was there are still children being killed in the world today. i mean right now for someone elses benefits. i just wanted to put it out it's... kinda more disturbing i guess? i mean death of the children, you know? even babies. if violence and bloodshed was not the first thing strikes you in this video, you are from a violent culture most probably. a culture that'^s ok with killing millions of civiians in half a decade maybe? i know you value the lives of blonde and blue eyed people for some reason now but what's going on in the rest of the world is a tiny bit more serious. especially kids being murdered and their deaths being justified or just ignored in the western world. just saying.
edit: english is not my first language. so i had to correct some sentences. cheers.

i'm just saying the first thing that touches your eyes and some words you speak seem a bit weird. still, i like your channnel and i'm looking to see more reactions, especially comedy. take care.

I think the idea was to portray the young boys as fallen angels, so loin cloths fits that-the song was directly inspired by the Warrington Bombing that killed two children & injured dozens of other people. Children in hot climates wear them & they have always been common in film & television, to us people in our forties & older it is just commonplace, but to modern eyes it can have a different meaning, that wouldn't have even been thought about by anybody making things back then. The only shocking thing for us was the children & her being painted like the lady in Goldfinger & the religious connotation of her & then them being martyred in front of a cross.
I doubt this video would be made now-there wasn't really that kind of connotation when this video was made 30 years ago pre-internet, pre mobile phones & very few people having a computer-kids would run around not wearing much, parents would even take photos of them naked in the bath laughing as young children-though that pretty much stopped when a famous UK female newsreader was arrested the following year along with her husband & their house was searched, after she took her camera in for holiday & home snaps to be developed (yes, most people still didn't have automatic cameras even then) & the developer reported her to the police-she was of course cleared as there was nothing sexual.
Television at least in the UK & continental Europe was very liberal until probably the second half of the 1990's & nudity was commonplace, even pre-watershed-even in popular UK family sitcoms there would be topless/nude women pictures on walls in the background or magazines etc. The BBC holiday show that went out at something like 7.30 or 8.00 PM had topless women in the opening titles!

They now want to be in the EU

After almost 100 years of fighting the English over that same stuff 😂

Many people won't like this, and il be the first to admit it is not a nice notion. We are a territorial, aggressive species by nature, not because we are evil or bad, but because it is nature's way of controlling our numbers, peace is the reason overpopulation will ultimately be out downfall. I don't like war, I don't encourage war, but it is a sad truth, not liking it doesn't make it so.
