No, this is not a cover, this is a complete rework. When Trent Reznor heard this, he said the song belongs to Johnny now.. Johnny did not know his wife, June, was on the stairs watching the filming, she was dying at the time, and did not want to ruin the take. When he showed this to his daughter, she said this sounds like a goodbye...Johnny said, "It is..." His wife June passed a few months after this was made, and Johnny followed her a few months later... This is a masterpiece
Oh stop Trent is the man he wrote this and his version is the bomb. They both are good. Johny change one word in the lyric. The last line gives it way that this a younger man. "I will find a way" and Trent surely did.
Well...but Trent wrote it, not Johnny. It was Trent's thoughts and emotions that were poured into those lyrics. It's similar to how the Gary Jules version of "Mad World" hits harder than the original by Tears For Fears, but Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears wrote it.
This one gets me every time especially the poignant ending where he closes the piano lid for the last time. This was his swan song. He passed 7 months after filming this video. 😭
A masterpiece. Rick Rubin produced Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt", a Nine Inch Nails song. Fitting this emotional song, a goodbye in many, ways on his final album. He left his entire life in that song, scars and all, like a confession and last right. Beautiful. Hollywood is a narcissism that uses talent up until they have no product and earning value any longer, and then it spits people out.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails said on this song... "Having Johnny Cash, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time, want to cover your song, that's something that matters to me. It's not so much what other people think but the fact that this guy felt that it was worthy of interpreting."
Oh Maddy....You beautiful soul you. I don't know anyone, including myself, who has not got emotional while watching this video or just hearing the song. I loved hearing your thoughts afterwards as well. 💜💜

It was / is the only constant in my life, so it feels safer than a lot of other options... Such a beautiful song.
Hey Maddy, great heart felt reaction to a hard hitting song. As a musician and a fan of Cash, this performance cuts deep. My great uncle played with Johnny and Elvis before they were big stars and told me some great stories about them. He grew up poor on a farm in the deep south and music was a way out, literally and figuratively speaking. I think we all dream of fame and fortune sometimes, but I believe this reflects the powerful price that has been paid by so many artists. He is saying he has fame and all this material stuff, but he has hurt those around him and lost himself in the process. In the end was it worth it? Sometimes the simple things in life are the most precious.
Your not alone Maddy, this version brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. And many others as well. Nothing more beautiful than music that can move you like this.
I heard this cover years ago. I stopped what I was doing and started listening after one note…I tried to think if I had heard this before…through a burst of sudden tears. I began to see other people’s pain and I have never been the same…
The guy who wrote this song, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) Said that this became Johnny's song. It just fit him so well, and he did such a impactful version.
@@MaddyReactions There's one lyric early on that tells you he didn't write it. "The needle tears a hole." Trent Reznor was a heroin addict, Johnny Cash wasn't.
I'll never forget the first time I arrived in Nashville for a two day job from Seattle. A building had a full sized painting on the side wall of Johnny Cash. I wasn't a country fan at the time but that painting said all I need to know about that town. The visit truly changed my perspective on a lot of things.
Embodiment of regret. That is such a perfect way to sum the song up. Johnny Cash’s music was a constant presence in my childhood. I knew his life was marred and conflicted but this song really shows how difficult it was.
Of all the reviews I've seen of this masterpiece, no one has not been affected by it. I'm 74, and know so many of Johnny's songs, but this is the top. And I still get teary over it because of knowing his life and struggles over the decades. Great review and commentary, Maddy.

The woman looking down at Johnny Cash from the stairs was June Carter Cash (Johnny’s wife) and was quite a legend in her own right. She was part of the Carter family who were called “The First Family of Country Music” and June performed with her sisters. June and Johnny met and fell in love while Johnny was still on probation after serving time at St. Quinten prison. He credits June for leading him to God, helping him get his first record deal and supported him as he kicked drugs and alcohol. You could say that she was his everything and he adored her. What a beautiful reaction to this amazing and deeply moving video, the last one he ever made, and he knew that when he made it. God bless Maddy, you absolutely nailed it. 🙋♂ God rest Johnny & June. 💔 💔
This was your best reaction by far. It was actually a cover of a Nine Inch nails song. It's not really about having alot, it is more about addiction and hurting and then losing your loved ones. But it genuinely touched you. This song was Johnny's goodbye. He knew he was near the end of his life. He passed 7 months after recording this video
Beautiful interpretation, Maddy, very insightful. I turned 60 this year, and I think this song has an even greater impact on me now than it would have if I was still in my youth. It's amazing in how it can reach down into one's very core and resonate so powerfully. Utterly brilliant.
Maddy, you are a beautiful soul.I’m often reminded of what Leonard Cohen said, “There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in”.Thank you for being a light🙂☮️
Modern society machine tricks many people into taking simple blessings and virtues for granted. Even forsaking family, friends and unconditional love outright in pursuit of hollow status and fleeting spectacles. Johnny Cash"s regret can be our reminder. Beautiful and genuine reaction Ms. Maddy.
This is your best reaction ever. This video always gets me in the feels, and it seems to intensify when seeing others encounter it for the first time. Thanks for your comments heartfelt comments.
It is heavy heavy stuff. I grew up listening to the Downward Spiral, and Hurt was always a deep song to me. Johnny's version is brutal in such a bigger way. Trent's addiction and self hatred reflected my own view of myself in my youth, and now I listen to Johnny's and the regret and weight of his cover reflect my own. Really heavy shit lol.
When Trent Reznor wrote this he had no idea how JC would sing it. Once he heard Johnny sing it, he immediately signed the rights to Johnny. He knew he would do justice to the lyrics, and oh my.. what a job Johnny Casb did with it. A tear jerker indeed.
I just watched a bunch of reactions to this song for the first time, as it is becoming more relevant to me, and due to the fact that I am a glutton for punishment. You encapsulated this song best with 'he created the embodiment of regret within a song'.
If you aren't choked up at the end of this, you have no heart. Both Johnny AND Trents version hits SO hard depending on what age and circumstances you find yourself in. Give yourself a few minutes, then revisit Home Free's Butts Remix to lighten your mood.

Rubbersole79, I never thought you were much more than a condescending creep, but your comment here has opened my eyes to your virginity. You're a lot more cringe than you let on aren't you? That's so darn amusing to me. Congratulations.
Your analysis of this song is spot on. Johnny was my 5th cousin. I met him once at a family reunion. He was about 17, and already becoming famous. I now live about 35 miles from his childhood home (featured in this video). Amazing that he was able to so accurately describe regret and depression. My professor of economics my first year of college told us something I never forgot, and something my subsequent 55 years have proven: "To the world of commerce, you are either a product, or a consumer. You are nothing else."
the sad thing is I've seen people react to this song over a hundred times but I've never seen anyone ever react to any other Johnny Cash songs and he was the King of Country.
Love ya Maddy you get it! I'm 64yrs old and lived the original version of this song as a young man and now as an old man I get to live this remake. I rarely make it thru the first minute without bawling my eyes out, it's horribly beautiful on many levels for me personally.
I loved what you had to say about this song & artist! Thank you for pouring out your feelings about music & the behind the scenes actions of stardom! You get alot of what Johnny was trying to say! RIP Man in Black!
Maddy - your summing it up as the definition of agony was so profound. SO glad you are aware of all the manipulation in the industry - important that you are sharing it. And yes, AMEN, Jesus the only ONE perfect ever - such a powerful depiction in the video. Thank you for reacting
One of the few songs that truly just hit you in the feels, that as you grow older, the meaning of lyrics are more heartfelt. So glad Johnny took a chance to do this. Coupled with his baritone are the lyrically relevant story of his life…that I believe, is the key to how this differs from the NIN version.
It’s a Nine Inch Nails cover but I love Johnny Cash’s version the best. It was one of the last things he recorded before his wife passed and then himself not long after. He had a rough life but he never apologized for his mistakes. He even celebrated that rough exterior at one point, but in his old age you could tell he was sort of regretting some of it. Such a profound performance.
After his daughter Roseanne first heard this she told him dad it sounds like you are saying goodbye and he replied, I am. Johnny was nearly blind from diabetes by the time he made this video and there is something very haunting about him closing the piano at the end of the video and the way he runs his hands over it, like he's closed the lid on his career.
See this song gets to me on such a deep level. Johny cash really and a bit Elvis me and my grandfather used to chat and listen to him while playing cards. When he passed was the last time I heard the song in year and now with regrets. Love ya sis you good on this one
Johnny cash is always very hard for me to listen to. He was one of my grandfather's favorite singers and we listened to him all the time in the car no matter where we were going, whether the car was full or was just me and him. Almost 10 years after he passed it's still kind of hard to listen to him, especially this song specifically. Though It is nice whenever one comes on I take the time to reminisce on those days either happily or sadly. It's definitely nice to have such great music tied to the memories of my favorite person in the world.
I never had an ongoing drug addiction like Johnny Cash did but as a man who was approaching the end of his life I can honestly say that I have oh so many regrets. There are so many things I would do differently. Having said all of that, 30 years ago I meant the love of my life and my life has been peaceful in all that time. I truly do not deserve her.
This is by far your best reaction. Thanks for being vulnerable with us. This one cuts the onions for me too. Your analysis is spot on. I've always thought the last life of the song is so depressing and also, strangely affirming at the same time; for all the regret he has, at the end he knows himself. Pardon if I wax somewhat ineloquently for a moment... He knows what he regrets, who he is and isn't denying or lying to himself; he's looking at the end and isn't taking himself, "you really lived a life l without regrets, to its fullest, and as He called you to be! No sorrow here as the ride winds down." How many people live 80 years in their own body with their own mind and even at the end don't know themselves well enough to have real talk to themselves or to God? There are people out there that think if they could do it all again they'd name different choices when though 80 years of new mornings and new starts have come and gone and not once did they change out have different choices. These are the saddest people in my estimation. I can't imagine how you il could have any kind of relationship with anyone if don't know yourself. A lifetime without a single deep connection to even themselves. Sorry for getting off topic, but that last line has always been so bitter sweet to me.
Best reaction I've seen of this video and song... When you were taking, Maddy, many Scripture verses in red came to mind about what would you give in exchange for your own soul. So glad I watched this today. Thank you Maddy! ❤❤❤

Your compassion is beautiful. Incredible how it shows inner beauty.
We will all meet our maker someday.. Time is finite and never stops.. It is a reckoning I believe everyone struggles with. Gets me everytime.
❤️
One of the best songs/music videos, ever.
Maddy.
It always feels like a confession video when i see this music video
Johnny Cash was my dad's favorite singer and this just brings all the emotions back! 😢Thanks for touching my heart Maddy ❤️💛
This is your best reaction ever. This video always gets me in the feels, and it seems to intensify when seeing others encounter it for the first time. Thanks for your comments heartfelt comments.
Everytime I hear that song called Hurt by Johnny Cash it feels like someone hit me in the stomach and it makes me cry
would bring a tear to a glass eye.....Great cover.
From first note to last word I weep like a baby every time I hear / see this video. RIP JC
What??????/
I just watched a bunch of reactions to this song for the first time, as it is becoming more relevant to me, and due to the fact that I am a glutton for punishment. You encapsulated this song best with 'he created the embodiment of regret within a song'.
Wow Johnny cash amazing, it’s awesome you were able to do such iconic song ❤❤❤
Agreed!!
If you aren't choked up at the end of this, you have no heart. Both Johnny AND Trents version hits SO hard depending on what age and circumstances you find yourself in.
Give yourself a few minutes, then revisit Home Free's Butts Remix to lighten your mood.
Very thoughtful response to a deep song/video. I think you'll always stay grounded. God bless you.
Love your reaction, it's shows that you have a good heart. This video always makes me cry too
The greatest send off a musician coulr give themselves. The legendary johnny cash rip !
Thank you for not shying away from the spiritual aspects; he's got some powerful Gospel/Christian songs I bet you'd love.
The best art makes you feel your own humanity....this is a great example of art (and a COVER, of a NIN's song from the 90s).
Maddy girl, I never thought you were much more than another cute girl doing music reactions on youtube, but your reaction here has opened my eyes to your depth. You're a lot more than what you show here aren't you? That's so darn refreshing to me. Good on you.
Rubbersole79, I never thought you were much more than a condescending creep, but your comment here has opened my eyes to your virginity. You're a lot more cringe than you let on aren't you? That's so darn amusing to me. Congratulations.
A real, genuine, heartfelt reaction. That was deep.

Beautiful Maddy. This is one superior song.

Perfect reaction to this video and my reaction everytime I watch it 😢❤
This is what a lifetime of regret feels like. Rest in peace to the Man in Black.
❤️
Wow Maddy, your reaction to this was beautiful and mirrored my reactions almost exactly. Thank you for being willing to share this raw moment.
Thank you so much!!
Damn he got you. You have a beautiful soul. You almost have that button because you are real. Don't give up.

I just was blown away at the search between holly and jesus, i never knew or even thought to make the connection. Soo crazy to me
I know the song. The guitar starts out and already there are tears in my eyes. Enjoy...and learn. He sings not with depression. He sings of regret.
Honestly, the best cover song ever. I loved it when Trent sang it, but I felt it when Johnny did.
I'm not a big lyrics guy, but this song and Harry Chapin's Cats in the Cradle hit me hard everytime.
Even though it wasn't his song originally, it was perfectly made to be a Johnny Cash song - especially at this time in his life.
No sorrow here as the ride winds down."
How many people live 80 years in their own body with their own mind and even at the end don't know themselves well enough to have real talk to themselves or to God? There are people out there that think if they could do it all again they'd name different choices when though 80 years of new mornings and new starts have come and gone and not once did they change out have different choices.
These are the saddest people in my estimation. I can't imagine how you il could have any kind of relationship with anyone if don't know yourself. A lifetime without a single deep connection to even themselves. Sorry for getting off topic, but that last line has always been so bitter sweet to me.
Great analysis
Best reaction I've seen of this video and song... When you were taking, Maddy, many Scripture verses in red came to mind about what would you give in exchange for your own soul. So glad I watched this today. Thank you Maddy! ❤❤❤
