Some Dealerships Suck - GM Edition

  • In this video I fix a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado with only 14,000 miles on it and it was less than 2 weeks out of warranty. However when the customer took it into the dealer to be looked at it was less than ONE WEEK OUT! I guess the rules are the rules but you know dang well if it was some "big important person" the dealership would have bent over backwards for the guy even if it was out of warranty by a few days. -Enjoy!

One of the wiring problems is that the looms and harnesses are installed frame on. The when other components are added the bolts and screws are run into the frame. If it cuts the wires at this point it is fixed. If not then there are screw and bolt threads to constantly rub against the insulation until it fails expensively.

As a "retired" service manager at a Ford, L M, Mercedes Benz for 25 years, I/my dealership would have investigated what was wrong. If it turned out to be a 500.00 or more repair I would have called Ford or M B. They would have told me to write up an "Out Of Warranty Claim" and have the factory rep sign off on it when in the next week. In this case we would have just fixed it. The PART cost to the Dealer is just that "COST" and we paid our techs till 5 PM if they were working on a car/truck or not so there is no extra cost in labor.
When you consider what any dealership spends in a week for radio, TV, Newspaper advertisement , billboards out on the highway, etc. etc. just to get a customer in the showroom in the first place the handling of this particular situation was just WRONG.

    • @ravenfeather7087

"Wrong" is apparently a disease that endemic to all Ford dealers except the one you worked for. I've dealt with three of them over the years. One of them told me when I complained that a new one I bought was using a quart of oil every 700 miles that that kind of consumption was "normal". Ten years later a different dealer told me a work vehicle that the organization I worked for had bought was also using a quart per 700 miles that that too was normal oil consumption. Both brand new vehicles.

I had to take my Ford to a dealership for a "known issue" with the screen on the oil pickup getting clogged. It was under warranty and I had a buddy hook it up to his computer before I took it in so I knew exactly what the issue was and told the dealership what it was before I took it in. They did the work "free" but still charged me $73 for "diagnosing" a problem when I told them what the problem was and it was a known issue. I asked the owner himself if he was really willing to lose a customer over $73 because if he didn't waive it I'd never come back. He didn't waive it. I've bought six vehicles since that one and each time I emailed him a picture of me with my new vehicle with a caption that said "Another sale lost over $73!"

He should have contacted Ford, I can't believe the dealer is allowed to double-dip and charge the customer a penny for a job that ends up being under warranty. I was a Honda tech and diagnosis is either included in the flat rate or in addition to it under normal warranty. The customer does sometimes participate in the cost of goodwill, out-of-warranty repairs.

If you have a service bulletin or a known trend and all you did was scan the same code the customer read, unless your scanner does something worth $73 it just doesn’t seem right. I get that you have to verify, after all you stand behind your work but if you know before you begin?

    • @Kazuma.-
      @Kazuma.- 3 роки тому +7

@Mel Davis the problem is whether warranty or not the first step of any repair is to Verify the customer's concern. As a technician we can't always trust what the customers say and we still have to make sure or else the claim for warranty from the car manufacturer will not be valid and the technician gets back flagged on the work. It makes sure your shit gets fixed and our asses are covered.

He went to an honest local repair guy like yourself and they found the problem and charged far less. I will personally never take my vehicle to a dealership.

I know quite a lot of people that driven a car and model from manufacturer X and after running into lots of problems with the car, they trade it in at the dealer for the same but slightly newer model! Or what about people paying top dollar for Apple phones and macbooks that break, get quoted a ridiculous amount of money to fix the device... and pay for that repair or just buy the same thing new!

I had a dealer that I've be going to for 17 years. I bought 6 vehicles from them, 3 of them were brand new. The ABS wheel sensor went bad my wife's car which has a 5 year bumper to bumper warranty. I could fix it, but I got a warranty on it. So, I took it in. The service writer said "no problem, we'll take care of it under warranty!" No mention of cost, so I assume no money out of pocket. Great!
I look at their trucks while I wait. They didn't have anything on the lot I lot. Then the sales guy says wait here, I think I got the prefect truck for you. He goes to the back lot and rolls up in a great looking, low mileage, all black, '18 Ram 2500 that just came in on trade with an quality lift kit and other cool mods. Wow! I figure somebody dropped $4500 in mods on the truck. The price was terrific, too, and they were going to treat me right trading in my truck. Sweat. I'll take it!
I'm working out the deal to buy it when the service writer comes up to me, "your wife's car is ready, and oh by the way, that will be $100." "$100 bucks to replace a wheel sensor?! No way! You didn't mention anything about cost." "Well, let me talk to the service manager." I keep working on the deal with the sales. We got everything setup. I'm ready to buy. All I need to do is go home, get my truck then come back to finish up on the new truck.
The service writer comes with the service manager while I'm talking to the sell manager. He basically says said "FU, and pay up!" I again mention there was no mention of any costs,. He said "you should've known." "I was in here 3 months ago for $3k of warranty work and there was no deductible." He said "I wasn't here back then and this is how we do it. Somebody messed up on your service, because you should have paid an deductible." "No man, someone took care of me. If I pay that $100, the deal on the truck is off I'll never step foot in this dealership again." He said "Rules are rules"
And that was that. I won't be going back and I won't send my friends there either.

The dealership was a much further drive and could not work on my schedule. Not blaming them but the money I would lose from missing work along with 50 bucks for oil change ( this was 30yrs ago ) was cost and time prohibited. Though I never had an issue with either vehicle that required warranty service.

Yeah my parents have bought about 6 toyotas from the same dealership and being rebellious ( and wanting more fun) I bought a manual chevy cobalt first and a fiat abarth second. Luckily the cobalt was a 2010 so they actually fixed most of the issues and I didn't have any troubles, but eventually I wanted something more fun and I bought a fiat abarth. After three years of ownership I finally decided I'd be boring but reliable. I bought a used ES350 because it has the toyota 3.5 v6 with a timing chain so it will never die, and I don't think I'll ever have a non lexus daily in the future. The toyota reliability just gives me such peace of mind that it will never leave me stranded and that counts for a lot.
Sure I'll have fun project cars on the side, but the daily will always have a toyota powerplant.

They charged over $600 for an EGR valve replacement where I could have done the job in 30 min and the part was around $100. They then tried to up sell me on damned near everything. Serpinetine belt was 6 months old but they said it was shot. Oil leaks everywhere but I don’t have one spot on my driveway. 1 year old battery tested bad. Bottom line is they wanted $2,700 to fix all the “identified” problems. I bit it on the EGR valve but I will never buy another vehicle there and never use their service department again. That truck was my 17th purchase from that dealership...i had spent over $350,000.00 on vehicles from them over the years....and I have NOT bought another vehicle from them since. I have since bought a Silverado, a Tahoe and several other vehicles from a different place. So far they have lost over $100k in sales because of a $300 repair that should've been covered.

When I was 19 and still going to school for my automotive degree, I had the lovely experience of working for a ford dealership here in northeast ohio. It was all fun in games til this one old man came in with his 2001 mercury grand marquis, for his oil change and tire rotation. I was looking around for anything outta the norm and spotted oil seeping out of the head gasket of all things. That car was new and only had 7k on it. I told the service writer about the problem and he grabbed the master tech to come over to look at it. I was a rookie then so they kept an eye out on me, lol. They looked at me and said, what leak? I learned that day that I had enough of the dealer experience. I went to school to help people, no screw them over. I know now that not all dealers are that way but as a new guy in the field, it was sickening. I ran outside and found that old man before he left. Told him what he needed to do. It wasn't long afterwards I left that place. It's sad because I was really loving that job til then. Any way that's my store hope you all never have to experience what I did

I used to work for a Nissan dealership and all the guys would laugh about who screwed over the customer the most. During the morning meetings the managers would joke and say "I want to see who can get the best 'crack' today we haven't had a good one in a while". Crack in this case meant that you screwed the customer and sold it way high. Or that you low balled the their trade-in and screwed them on that. For my own next car I'll be buying from Carvana I think.

Watched hundreds of out of warranty repairs done just out of warranty, and well out of warranty. Depending on the managers mood he would charge them a deductible for 50 bucks or even 300 dollars. Or even no deductible. Even being a certified G.m. tech they would not allow us to bring our own personal vehicle into the shop for a mandatory g.m. recall, we were told we must take our vehicles to the dealer for repair even though we were a g,m, fleet shop! Observed many higher up the food chain personnel, quietly have their personal g,m, vehicle repaired in the fleet shop even though it was not "allowed". We just had to suck it up.

More or less the same for me. Way back in the 1970's I purchased a new 1975 AMC Pacer. When it was a few months old it was in the shop for some little warranty thing. The tech had the passenger door wide open (and the Pacer had very long doors) and the tech in the next bay raised his hoist which caught under the open door of my car and did a fair bit of damage. I was standing outside the open roll up door of the shop and witnessed the event. I was rather forcefully invited to wait ONLY in the waiting room which had no view of the shop floor. When the service writer told me my car was ready I asked him what was going to be done about the damaged door. He faked surprise and asked me to show him the damage. I did so and he insisted it must have happened in a parking lot somewhere and the Dealer had nothing to do with it. I guess he didn't know I had witnessed the event and was hoping that I would just get into the driver's door and not notice the damage to the passenger side of the car. I forget now how I finally convinced the dealership that the damage had occurred while the car was in their care but they eventually did do a half ass repair job on it. That and several other incidents of incorrect repairs convinced me to buy the tools and service manuals and for the last 40 years I have done all possible vehicle repairs myself. It is amazing how much that reduces my stress level and blood pressure!

Your correct about not screwing your customer. I had an HVAC guy come out and install a fan motor on my outside unit. I looked up the fan motor price...$70.00 on line...my price...their charge for installing the new fan motor and two capacitors as preventive maintenance that I didn't need, over $600.00. And then the guy asked if I wanted a service agreement. I said no, and he wrote on the receipt that "customer opted for band-aid fix." I belong to a community newsletter that covers a lot of the neighborhoods in my city. Do you know how many times I've warned people looking for HVAC repair companies about this ripoff...how many times I've been thanked for warning people not to use this company's service. It's cost them way...way...way more than they over charged me. And, I will never stop making sure that these clowns never work for anyone that I have the opportunity to warn. It's been years and it will be decades more, if I live that long.
So, let that be a lesson service people. Be nice...be fair...or else.

Three years and 14,000 miles and a connector fail? That’s absolutely unacceptable. Chevy should be ashamed for that. It tells me the quality control is merely a suggestion with their parts suppliers and they don’t care. The fact that they wouldn’t take care of them tells me a lot about that dealership and they should Have done it just as a goodwill gesture, considering how new the vehicle is and what low mileage it is and how close to the warranty period He was out. I was in the electronics and high-tech world for over 30 years and your wiring skills are top notch. That’s a beautiful job you did.
My experience with a dealer was in 1997 when I custom built a Chevy K 2500 pick up anything kept blowing axle seals and shooting grease all over my rear brakes, they replaced it a couple times and then when it was out of warranty. They started charging me for it and I kept saying but you haven’t fix the problem so I took it to someplace else. They actually solve the problem for me and two years later, I got a Ford.

I just had a similar problem on my son's 2016 Colorado, 2 weeks out of warranty with 32 thousand miles. The service power steering light came on, this truck has electric power steering, owners manual says do not drive take to dealer when this light comes on, could have been a bad steering rack for several thousand dollars but all they found was a chaffed wire wanted $900 for 4 hours of troubleshooting time and repair. I ask them to call factory area service manager and they refused. After arguing with them for 45 minutes and pointing out that I had bought 3 vehicles from them in the last 5 years they finally lowered the cost to $600 or so. paid their fee and will never buy a car from them again. Oh and I made sure I told everyone I could about how I was treated. Funny thing, their customer relations manager call me a couple of days after the repair to see how the service went, I told her the story, she was going to check into it and call me back, been 2 months still waiting for the call.

I'm commenting on a 5 year old video. Don't know if anyone will see this. Not a warranty story, but a dealership story just the same. I bought an Infinity off of a Lease, 22k miles, two year old car in Michigan. Drove it for a couple of years and went to Utah to complete a graduate degree (wife is from back west). One day the car was acting a little funny so took it to the Nissan shop for an inspection. Recommendation was to replace a tie rod plus an alignment, replace a knock sensor ($800+labor), and an oxygen sensor ($180+labor). Took it to a local shop the next Saturday morning to replace the tie rod and received nearly the same recommendation and quote for the knock sensor and oxygen sensor. Got a call from the shop owner on Monday morning. Conversation went something like this. Mr. Brown, you had your Infinity in the shop on Saturday for a tie rod and alignment. Mr. Brown (me): yes. Shop owner: your car has the exact same engine as the Maxima (could have been the Ultima, can't remember). The price for the knock sensor for the Maxima was $200+labor and the price for the oxygen sensor was $38+labor). Shop owner: if you crosswalk the part numbers between the Maxima and the Infinity, they are the exact same parts. We'll replace them at the Maxima rate. Mr. Brown: put them in!! We went back to that "mom and pop" shop for the next five years until I graduated and moved to Indiana for my next job.
The Infinity was a great car. The only reason we could afford it was that it came in off a lease program. I guess if you get labeled as someone with money (owning a luxury car), someone is always after your money!

I used to love GM cars and in fact have personally never owned anything but. I learned years ago what GM was all about. Had an 89 Firebird Formula 350 (still own it) but in about 93 it began to run crappy. My brother was a well known reputable mechanic. The car has a TPI engine that was considered exotic at the time. He called several GM mechanics who told him since only Vettes and hi performance Camaros and Firebirds had those engines and dealer mechanics knew very little about them. They would just replace parts until they fixed the problem. The issue was the car would only rev to about 2000 RPM and fall flat on its face and stall. No check engine light or stored codes in ECM. So we went through replacing parts that could cause this starting with the cheapest first. O2 sensor made no difference. Next was actually the ECM module which fixed the main issue. However what happened was the failed ECM caused the engine to run very lean and it melted the internals of one of the catalytic converters. Then he called GM about the converters. The car was less than a month out of the 6/60 power train and emissions warranty. It had about 32,000 miles at the time. GM said the converters were $746 and good luck. The converters were 1 piece stainless steel from each exhaust manifold to each converter then into the single over axle pipe. I didn’t expect them to cover the entire thing but thought they could have cut me some sort of brake on the price but no. The car still doesn’t have 60,000 miles on it yet.
