Let's just put in perspective the "your weight in gold" saying.... So at the gold price right now, at about $1300 an ounce, and my guess to Eric's weight of 178 pounds, with 16 ounces in a pound, we get $3.7 million bucks. Yep, this seems about right!

I feel your pain my man. I have been through sooooo much of the trials of doing things twice or more , come backs, etc because of defective parts trying to save the customer money with non OEM parts. The pain of getting a phone call from a customer's car you just worked on with the same problem just kills the day huh lol. I was debating on buying a used engine yesterday for a customer's car for real cheap w/no warranty but I canceled and decided to go for the more expensive one with a warranty because I just imagined the car coming back to haunt me if I go with the lower price engine. Sometimes cutting corners because of price will cost us more in the long run. I learned many lessons the hard way, My point: The school of hard knocks sometimes will cost you a heavy tuition. Keep your head up brother and keep SMASHIN through the pain.

Doesn't matter, there is a rate book where all the labor hours are listed, so the time is locked in. Then there is the going labor rate at the dealerships in the area around you, it's listed in the books too. You can only get up to what the going hourly rate is and no more, at the allotted labor hours listed. In this case, they only pay half the hourly rate.

Hey Eric, you should consider getting a cheap loaner car for your customers. I recently got one and its been fantastic. No more getting update phone calls every 30 min reminding me that they need the car by 3 and to make sure its ready and "just checking in". Customers are much happier and relaxed and so am I. Peoples attitude completely changes. It used to be that if the work on the car took longer than expected I had to make the dreaded call and have them tell me "I need the car now", "How am I supposed to get to work?", "I can't afford these repairs if I can't get to work", "I have to pick up so and so." Now its "No worries, take as much time as you need, what ever it costs it costs. Just let me know when its ready."

      That's a great idea, Nutz.
Only problem with that is, here in the Northeast, it would cost you a FORTUNE to do that. In MA for example, the state charges sales tax on the initial sale, then excise tax yearly based on the vehicle's value. $75 for a title, then $60 for 2 year registration. Then there's the insurance - that's the real killer. You could get a $200 beater, fix it enough to make it usable, and pay $1,600 a year just to keep it on the road. You'd definitely have to weight the cost/benefit ratio there.
Eric would probably need 2 or 3 of them with the volume of business he does.

A rep from a major rebuilder explained how rebuilds are done. They don't dissamble a single alternator/steering gear/master cylinder and then put it back together with some new parts. They dissamble large quantities of used units, sort out the usable parts, and then assemble units from those parts. Depending on the brand there may be some new brushes, seals, or bearings but the majority of the parts are used from multiple donors. That's why an unmolested used part from a junkyard is often better than a rebuild.

I've had great luck with NAPA. Agree that I would never by remanufactured anything from any one though. And I will never buy anything mechanical eg rotates or is integral to operation from Advance, Autozone, o'Reilly's etc. Before I knew better I used to get parts from Trak Auto, talk about horrible. Multiple radiators, alternators starters heater cores, brand new hoses blowing. Last year I bought a transmission mount from Oreillys because I could not get it at NAPA. Lasted one year and the rubber let go. OEM went 13 years. Fortunately I learned the trick of stuffing heater hose in there to solve that problem. But still.

A reason the starter may have failed to work properly the first time and then worked properly every consecutive time, is that the Bendix gear probably stayed engaged with the flywheel the entire time, even when you weren't trying to start it. The Bendix gear was probably not properly lubricated, sticking, and takes more force to engage. When you start the car, the flywheel that is starting to spin quicker is generally enough to force the bendix gear back into its rest position.
The quick fix would be to spray some high quality lubricant on the bendix shaft and be done with it. Or even do that before installing them.
