@@LessGo7921I have to agree. He doesn't seem like a bust. He showed good potential but wasn't given the opportunity to compete. Had a good start to his career with the wood brothers in 08, then in 09 he lost his ride and was hopping from team to team and having a better season than he did in a full time ride to then be given the opportunity to race for a top team in 2010 only to get cut less than 10 races until the season. He didn't put up atrocious finishes at all, he was just dealt a shit hand. Not really a bust imo

It may have been as simple as he didn't get along with someone big on the team. But Junior's excuse as to why they let him go said practically nothing. I remember Bires tried to qualify for the 2009 Daytona 500. If I remember correctly, he was filling in for Dexter Bean because NASCAR told Bean that he didn't have enough superspeedway experience, so the team called on Bires to get them into the show. The car was.......not fast.
I find that a bit hard to believe, since he had already raced in ARCA for several years, including Daytona and Talladega, and had already scored a few top-10s in those races.

I think 2 things stunted Kelly Bires. That was peak Buschwhacking and the Open Wheel Invasion. Most teams were wanting Cup Series stars or former IndyCar drivers. 2 things that really screwed up the ladder system for a while. Especially the Buschwhacking

Like these ideas although I don’t know if I would call Jeff Green; Mike Skinner; or even Regan Smith busts. Mike Skinner was a regular championship contender in Trucks and had solid success in Xfinity/Busch series. Even in Cup he had his moments. Sadly he had the worse luck at times like Atlanta in 2000. He did win the Japan races and a few duals even though they weren’t point races. Jeff Green won the 2000 Xfinity/Busch title and was a dominate figure there in early 2000s. Although after being fired from RCR mid season in 2003 I think he fell off bc he couldn’t get a quality ride. He really should had kept his mouth shut at Richmond. Regan Smith won races and was a regular title contender every year he ran for JRM. He even did a solid job at Furniture Row in late 2000s and early 2010s. He got the 78 car a Darlington win in 2011 and should had won for DEI in the 2008 Fall Talladega race but was wrongfully black flagged. If you and I have different criteria on what makes a bust that’s cool. Just saying my personal view.
So my father used to work for JTG and later JRM and there were a lot of behind the scenes stuff that led to his demise but calling him a bust is out of line. I can tell that this creator is just a fan who has no idea what is going on behind closed doors.
Colin is such a weird one; obviously was competent in trucks but struggled a little bit in Roush, right at that time when Roush was starting to bleed sponsors for the second time. Honestly put Erik Darnell in the same category. At least Colin sometimes got the call up from Roush again, though for some reason that nobody will ever be able to satisfyingly explain to me, nowhere near as much as Billy Johnson did.

Maybe it’s just my bias as a Bires fan but I think his dismissal from JRM had more to do with Buschwhacking than performance but that was the nature of the series back then. Bires was just 1 name on a long list of talented drivers hurt by the era they were in.
I feel like calling Kelly Bires a bust is a little harsh. I put a lot of the blame on Dale Junior and the Eury's for being so incredibly shortsighted and a little stuck in their ways. The reality was the team badly needed money and Kelly couldn't bring any so he was dropped. His results weren't horrible and he could have been an awesome Xfinity driver. Not to be! I actually completely forgot he ran for Joe Gibbs Racing!

I think he and several other drivers would have gotten better opportunities in Cup had the Busch Series didn't have the Cup guys making those starts and running the full schedule. I always believed that Busch should have Cup guys making some starts, but not a full slate. The series needed its own stars, it had lifers like Randy LaJoie, Jason Keller, and Mike McLaughlin.

I dunno know if people ever expected Paul Menard to be a regular Cup winner. I think he exceeded a lot of people’s expectations just by winning a Cup race.
He was the classic 'safe pair of hands'. Rarely wrecked but was rarely Top 5. Only 1 Top 15 points finish but he did win the Brickyard. I'd say not a bust but maybe a slight underachiever considering he was at a quality team (RCR).
His results were not atrocious, however this was when Buschwhacking was out of control. He was really fighting for the best of the non Cuppers.

I would say he is better than you think he was pretty consistent as he raced in every race from 08-19 with an average start and finish around 20th
He was the classic 'safe pair of hands'. Rarely wrecked but was rarely Top 5. Only 1 Top 15 points finish but he did win the Brickyard. I'd say not a bust but maybe a slight underachiever considering he was at a quality team (RCR).
