- I think Jon Wood will eventually run Wood Brothers Racing. Unfortunately, his driving career didn't quite meet the expectations. After showing flashes in the beginning he quickly fizzled out by age 27.

A NASCAR Bust driver that actually admits that they’re a NASCAR bust.
And he will be running his family owned team in the future. The Wood Brothers will be here for the foreseeable future.
He seemed humble
In most of the crashes in the Busch series he was just unlucky and caught in the middle. Good to know he`s carrying on in his family's business.
He might be the most unlucky driver I've seen. But it's on him being in the wrong place all the time. I remember thinking, even when he hangs back he gets caught up in other people's incidents. Is a really good guy, wish things went better.
Never forget that Jon Wood was included in Dirt To Daytona as an official Trucks Driver and a fictional Cup Driver
Wait he was in DTD? I saw him IN NASCAR 06-09.

It isn’t the only reason but he definitely was a reason for why they went part-time for almost a decade. Good to see that he’s still in racing.
Literally every Cup start had him have an engine problem. Every. Single. Time.
I liked Jon, he was really a magnet for other cars running in to him in your montage.
Just a random fact about him, as a rookie in truck series he actually signed up for and posted on the Roush Racing message board to talk to fans. I think someone in PR figured that out within 2 weeks and told him to stop.
Bob Ghram was a Florida senator who decided to run for president (side side note he was a democrat) and had the idea to sponsor a race car with some campaign funds. Thus Jon get a sponsor for his truck as shown, and a couple wins. Bob Ghram's run for president didn't go very far and it's entirely possible that truck series win could be considered it's high point.
He was almost Al Gore’s running mate in 2000

You gotta feel bad for Jon when you see that, at least in the montage you have here, most of his wrecks weren't his fault and just a lot of bad luck and wrong place at the wrong time moments.
Jon Wood is a god on NASCAR 08 for the PS2.

I only remember him as the guy who shared his ride with an aging Bill Elliott & Ken Schrader in 2007, but I’ve heard since then that he’s a really nice guy. I’m glad to see he’s keeping his family team, let alone the oldest in the Cup Series, alive today.

@@johnhaas2523 as long as the team is still going, and as long as Roger Penske has interest in helping it stay afloat, I don’t care if it’s just a name. I’m just happy to see it still on the track, and I’m happy that Jon has found a way to still be useful, even if it isn’t in a race car.
I keep forgetting that JTG Daugherty Racing had an Xfinity and Truck team...
I was a Jon Wood Fan from 2005-2008.
I had high hopes for him, especially after that 2nd place at Talladega.
Those crashes and some off track issues is what did his driving career in.
I honestly don't believe that if you get caught up in someone's wreck, then that makes you a bust like it's completely unfair.
Keeping the car clean is a reason that some guys are busts, or at least flame out of the sport, but I don’t know if it applies to Jon Wood necessarily.

We also can't forget that he competed in the NASCAR Pro Invitational Series race at North Wilksboro in 2020.

Fun Fact: not a lot of people remember this, but Jon Wood won the last Craftsman Truck Series race at Pikes Peak in 2002....

@@nascarsteve I don't know if I would go that harsh but a full-season suspension would definitely be something I would go for. It did not to mention he didn't do anything good with Roush its funny to think that if Jack was not picky about who was Jeff Gordon's Crew Chief he could have put him in that 16 car instead of LePage and actually won some races.
@@nascarsteve I mean imagine keeping Jeff and Ray together and putting them on the 16 instead of years of mediocrity from LePage. Plus Mark Martin would've had a competent teammate and might've actually won a championship too.

I was watching a bgn race from 96, lepage was getting lapped by chad little and lepage totally just wiped him out lol he was a liability for over a decade before dega 😆

I grew up with Jon, grades k-12 . We were in the same basketball and football teams from 4-7th.grades and graduated with him. We grew up about 2 miles from each other...also, he never talked about racing at school..humble guy.
Major props to Jon Wood, for having a good sense of humor and being man enough to admit that he doesn’t have the driving skills to pay the bills.
There was also Jon's cousin, Keven Wood, who made nine Truck starts for WBR. Only scored one top-15.

Watching the clips in this video, I wouldn't call Jon Wood a bust. He just had the worst luck.

I met Jon at a truck race in Memphis and he was super nice, probably one of the nicest drivers I ever met maybe because it was his first season. But looking at his career he may have perhaps been too nice to make it as a driver and have that presence in a team that the ones that do make it have.

I always thought about the late Ricky Hendrick heading the similar path of running a nascar team that his dad founded after his racing career fizzled out. Jon Wood will be the case after his racing career fizzled out. Jon will be running his family's team as long as Nascar is here.
He did race the last IRacing Cup event in 2020.

He was great in trucks but honestly his equipment in xfinity was mid at best.
Yeah, JTG/WBR equipment was really just top-15 barely top-10 equipment between 06 and 08.
Which I mean isn't bad when you're going against JGR, Penske, Roush, Hendrick, KHI, RCR and Braun, but as far as Busch/Nationwide and Cup were concerned, he came in at the worst time for the series in the former and the worst time for the team in the latter.
He practiced and Q 21 for Ricky Rudd Fontana 2005.
I like that he admits that he’s a NASCAR bust.

Although Jon Wood was not a bust in the Craftsman Truck Series, Jon Wood never even got a chance to head for the mountains in the Busch Series.

Really hoping Harrison Burton gives them Cup win #100 sometime soon. Jon Wood may be a bust, but Jack Wood is proving he is certainly not a bust so far. Jack still has a long way to go though.
been waiting for this for a while. This guy came at me hard on twitter for disagreeing with him.
A lot of these clips support bad luck over pure driving. And, in all honesty, what was expected to happen in JTG equipment? Not winning a championship, that's for sure. This isn't to start or rebuttle anything, instead to pose a question of: are drivers who are considered a bust, possibly the fault of luck, organization/equipment decline, team issue, etc. Rather than a lack of talent or driving ability itself

With all of those highlights it honesty looked like for every 1 incident that was his fault there were like 4 or 5 that were someone else screwing up and him just getting caught up in it. Just seemed hell’a unlucky.

Seems to me like he had run of bad luck as he got stuck in mediocre equipment. A few hard hits he should have taken a break after... after watching the video it just feels like there is some missing context on this one.

A few of these were his fault. But I forgot how awful his luck was too. If there was a wreck, it was going to happen right in front of him.
