NASCAR Busts: Gray Gaulding

- This edition of NASCAR Busts is one I've been holding back on for a while but in light of recent events, I feel it's time to call it. Gray Gaulding was supposed to be one of the top NASCAR Cup Series drivers by age 26 but now he's out of the sport indefinitely.

I just now learned that Gray Gaulding got suspended.
He was supposed to race dega in the 14 this week in xfinity then they switched to to Massey

Same here.
Who? /S

Biggest surprise of this video was learning his first name is actually Dwayne 😂

You wouldnt get arrested...
You wouldnt also drive a Nascar...
Stop driving 😤
Can't say I've ever heard of him
His Krispy Kreme car will always be an iconic paint scheme
Man I thought yall were joking
Cameron Hayley...man...still angry how they ditched him in favor of Coughlin. Money be damned.
What's Hayley doing now

Did you know Gray Gaulding's first race in the Cup series, was Jeff Gordon's last race in 2016?
Dang…
At least he can say he got to race alongside two legends (Gordon and Jimmie)
Like when Gordon’s first race was Petty’s last.

This is one of those cases where a driver escalates in NASCAR way too early. Great video BFM!
He even drove the cursed 60 car for Roush, no wonder he became a bust.
Yeah so did Chris Buescher
So did mark martin. 😂
@@antz350 Heck of a curse on that number, lol.
@kylejonesUB it wasn't cursed till after edwards left it
When?
Another victim of Casey Atwood syndrome, except here the final outcome was very ugly…
I love that you called it "Casey Atwood syndrome" because that makes nascar fans like me know exactly what you're talking about. 😂
Seriously though, I heard Casey himself once say he was just lazy and didn't want to put in the work....
Yep, I remember the Krispy Kreme days in the #20 K&N Series days, his little Cup stints in the mid-2010s, 2017-2018 Cup season, his stint in SS Greenlight, almost winning Xfinity twice, to (allegedly) what he is currently going through.
What a difference 12-13 years has been😬
Do you think it's still called the Gray Gaulding Grilled Cheese?
I actually searched on Google and nothing came up so probably not, unless you were joking.
At least with other NASCAR Busts according to Darian such as Casey Atwood, J.J. Yeley, Scott Riggs etc., they aren't at all bad people. It's sucks to know that Gray Gaulding did what he was alleged accused for, and before that, had some decent runs with SS Greenlight Racing. And ironically this past weekend at Talladega, he was set to run one of the races, and make his NASCAR 2024 season debut.
Wasn't he suspended for drugs and chase Elliott drove his car or was that someone else
@@johngancarcik5682 Spencer Gallagher
@bw-leftturnracing7779 ok my bad but hey another bust Darian can make a video of
I met him at Daytona last year, he was a nice guy… up until this year, like they always said, never meet your hero’s or fans if you put it that way.
"What happens when you give a kid too much attention and dont let him develop properly"
Not developing is what killed his career. These young self proclaimed superstars need to take the training step to get to the next level. Run a few years of trucks, Xfinity even if you excel you need the track time. Look at Byron took him a few years in cup to get it, in the best equipment his money could buy! I think he maybe had a shot if Kevin stuck with him, you also can't be 18 driving junk in Cup and think you'll be a star.
Dude actually made the local news in Virginia after a 2nd or 3rd place at Dega years ago.
Fifty Shades of Gray Gaulding
Your comment is more accurate then you or many others know . There was that little incident with somebody's wife that burned a lot of bridges for him .
If you cant run well in KBM equiment you don't have much talent most times
This hurts to watch 😭
He took the rubbing is racing a little too serious
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Bro is talented and pretty underrated... Close to win two races with sub-par equipament, deserved better cars... But threw everything away doing 💩
That's sad
Nope he had no talent to begin with.

Joey logano is one of the few hype drivers thats actually lasted
It's rare when drivers live up to it alot of the time these hyped drivers are rushed without being given the proper time to learn the different cars and series and even who they are driving with on the track each car is different
A k&n car is nothing like an xfinity or cup car
That's why atleast a year or 2 in each series should be had with acceptable results granted look at logano or chase Elliott they were given time to adjust and grow
Truex was hyped too.
Guy had talent and just tossed it all away....
Nope he didn't.
@@runrafarunthebestintheworldhe did he just got rushed up if he either had a full time season in either trucks or xfinity hell even ARCA and didn’t sign with BK racing then it would’ve a slightly different story
I just learned that Gray was a hyped driver. I had absolutely no idea who he was until BK, and never knew any of his earlier career until this video. A victim of being rushed and having too many expectations on his shoulders, IMO.
I remember a piece they did on him before the Battle at the Beach (one of the get to know, segments) and a short mention of him in NASCAR Race Hub.
His career was destroyed the minute kevin harvick hyped him up. That was way too much attention and high expectations.
Totally was the sandwich , and inability to do a sit up .
I would bet it played a roll.
10:44 Oh I miss Dylan Kwasniewski, Turner Scott truly ruined his career in my eyes…
He truly deserved a couple more years of development…
Yeah Dylan had some talent but he just became a mid pack driver riding around. It was just strange that it never went deeper than that.
I forgot about him
I agree when turner Scott went belly up it just shot any momentum he had behind him he could no SHOULD be in cup right now but the turner Scott thing was it
Request: NASCAR Busts: Gary Bradberry
Jeff and David Green (Cup series)
Some stuff from his Wikipedia page:
His dad was vice president of operations at NTS Motorsports (Truck, Xfinity, K&N Pro East & ARCA team that was around from 2011 to 2016), fellow race car driver Zane Smith is his brother in law and it was April 2nd that he got arrested for misdemeanor domestic violence with NASCAR suspending him indefinitely the following day (so April 3rd)
I’ll always remember his Krispy Kream scheme.
I have a personalized signed hero card with that scheme. Toyota had him out at Texas that year for an autograph session Such a personable young man.
I did actually think he was going go somewhere for a minute
He grabbed every opportunity he was given to climb. While that isn't always a bad thing, when the offer is coming from a backmarker team as infamous as BK Racing, you have to wonder what exactly the thought process was.
This hits close to home for me. Imagine that, harvick pulling the rug out from under somebody with potential. I worked at khi when he shut it down. He has no soul and will do it to anyone. Gaulding had the talent. Pull the rug out from under Keelan harvick and see how good he does.
Could he sitll recover after the abuse? It was his fault but I'd love to see him turn around
spoiled daddy's money kids be like
I remember the Krispy Kreme car well but never could call it by it’s driver. Lol 😅
They had some pretty good schemes
Casey Atwood crawled so that Gray Gauding could walk. So much hype, not the outcome one of them hoped for.
Look if you just look at the wrong numbers I think he's just a mediocre Journeymen and not so much a bust you know similar to Sorensen or Yeley.
But for one the guy was not even 18 and I feel like we needed to calm our expectations down and once again he was just a mediocre journeyman
Love his Krispy Kreme schemes
To me Gaulding being a bust is a combination of over-hype, as evident by the fact he had media swarming him before he was even 15, not having enough opportunities in top ranking equipment, and perhaps the closing of KHI. Once KHI closed Gaulding was basically on his own. Guidance from a driver like Kevin Harvick might have been able to help him but he was just thrown in the deep end without help and was expected to figure it out. Hence why he missed his opportunities with Kyle Busch and Roush
This is what happens when money preceeds talent
He HAD the talent, but the sponsorship moved him up too quickly.
I'm going to be honest, I didn't even know what he looked like until this video. I remember the name but I couldn't even tell you what car he drove..... Ever.
He was a bust to begin with, never lived up to the hype
9:57 ummm Dude isn't the other way around? In the United States, you are guilty until proven innocent? That's why every time an allegation comes up, if the accused is related to sports they always get suspended as soon as the allegation is made public
Umm no, Presumption of innocence.
@@BlackFlagsMatter legally speaking, yes but we do know that society (organizations, sponsors, etc...) views it the other way around, this is why every single actor, sports figure and alike are always cancelled and get their lives ruined regardless if the accusations are real or not.
what's with rick ware drivers getting in trouble?
The footage of him playing sim racing in 2004 BLEW MY MIND
I used to work for his dad, was an interesting time lol
You’re poking my curiosity by saying it “was an interesting time” if you want, could you explain?
@ic3man if you ever met his dad, you would know.
Loved the video, I also grew up hearing about the hype from Harvick. It seems like this is the case more and more often. Typically it’s a young talent and Gray is talented for sure no doubt, but when you have a family with money behind you….you're gonna get a ride no matter what & I believe that creates a false sense of “stardom” so to speak. Yeah it’s easy to get a grilled cheese named after you when people want to impress your parents. The problem is if you don’t have good people around you which seems like that’s what happened. He had a bunch of yes people around him and his family & thought just what they had was enough to go to the Cup. But it takes more than money, always has. Hope he turns his problems around though on the charges.
Who is Gray Gaulding and why is he arrested?!?!
Not much of a bust if he never had potential in the first place
I just realized he was suspended
I hope that this eventually becomes a lesson for any young upcoming NASCAR driver.Be a child first before making adult decisions
0:51 rFactor 1 jumpscare
I really think he should’ve just turned more laps. I believe the talent could’ve been there but not only did he get rushed I think he rushed himself.
I’m not sure why people are so hipped by a late model win without knowing the facts some times there are small fields at some races
Now someone like Chase Elliott winning the snowball derby (superlate model) at 16 years old that’s a massive achievement he beat the best in the country at the time but winning a late model race is not the same
(This is coming from a latemodel/super late model racer with 50+ wins) and I know i don’t stand a chance in any of NASCAR’s top 3 series 🤷♂️
Another reason I don’t like pulling for kids. Can’t stand how earlier they start. Then they get to cup with zero personality bc all they know is left turn.
I think Gray is an absolute example of "what if". What if he never got the hype? What if he won a cup race?
So Gray's career was ruined?
He was one of those guys I always kept an eye on at the superspeedways because there wasn't much to root for after the Krispy Kreme days. One of my favorite drivers up to today falling so far so quickly is just disappointing. I hope he is proven innocent or comes back in some capacity one day, it would be a nice comeback story.
Yeah, Nascar's policy on suspending drivers is just wrong. Thank you for mentioning innocent until proven guilty. That is supposed to mean something.
Yeah I peaked at the age of 8 too...could've been a pro baseball player...but then I grew up...silver spoons will tarnish given time
Hi Guys! How are You doing Today? Like If You’re having a Good Day (No, I’m not a Like Beggar) and Dislike If You’re having a Bad Day. (If You’re having a Bad Day, I Pray It gets Better).
Too much success at too early an age went to his head, and made him into an arrogant, privileged jerk.
Darian, can you do videos on “When Boris Said Became A Winner”, “First Starts: Shane van Gisbergen” and “When Chaos Came To Watkins Glen In 2012”?
What happened to Cameron Hayley?
He did absolutely nothing at Thor Sport
I'm guessing sponsorship dried up, hasn't run Pinty either
Hes not a bust, he hasnt had opportunities much
He's a bust.
We don’t defend spouse abusing clowns. Grow up.
If there’s one thing I’m going to remember from him, it’s that Panini scheme he ran last year
You took 9 minutes to finally get to the point. Thank you fast forward button.
Gray isn’t a name. It’s a color
Met him when he drove K&N and again in the 23 DP car. Both times, very personable. He had the talent and the sponsorship, I remember that RaceHub episode when he was 12, they were hyping him up. He got rushed too quickly, like too many of these young guys, and he never panned out. He had the Panini sponsorship as well, which is probably why he got those lower-tier rides. Hate it for him. From where he was at 12 till now, like you said, a pretty sad fall from grace.
Imagine if he won that one Talladega race tho
I still can't believe people thought Gray Gaulding deserved a Cup ride. It's like saying Riley Herbst, Brian Scott and Cody Coughlin deserve cup rides. The dude had no talent either way.
Ah, yes, Cody Coughlin. I remember him. Speaking of which, Darian, that’s another NASCAR Busts video you should do: NASCAR Busts: Cody Coughlin.
And you are?
Even in K&N Custer be gettin' screwed
Gray was his own worst enemy.

Driver development is key. Should have kept him in the K&N series for further development.
That's McCall Gaulding's Brother.
According to Wikipedia, he's the brother-in-law of Zane Smith.
Look at bubba! 7 years and just is a tax write off!
The charges were dropped a couple of days ago
Hopefully Gray doesn’t return anyways, that doesn’t make him innocent
Been waiting for this one for a long time lol
A shame, he seemed respectful & talented as a young driver. One K&N victory does not a cup champion make. A couple of bad career turns can ruin a driver's chance to make it to the top. He made it to Roush, he had at least a chance to show his capability. Not everyone is Joey Legano and gets two bites at the apple.
So everyone is saying that Hailie Deegan is a better driver than this dude? Sure. I watched her literally wreck four different cars today. Her and the other cars were running in the 30s with 10 laps to go. Yet somehow she sets off 4 cautions in a matter of 10 minutes. She's never won a thing but gets to keep going up to the next level. I don't understand why he would only get a couple races to prove himself and this girl who can barely go 10 laps without touching a car or the wall, gets all the time she needs and hasn't even finished top 10. I feel bad for this guy. Seems like Harvick just allowed him to think he had a partner and mentor for the future then left him high and dry months later. WTF is wrong with Harvick? What a terrible thing to do to a kid.
You did a really good job of creating, editing and presenting a video that is ironic. Sad but true.
Anybody could drive that car and knock the crap out of people. Thats not racing! There is a sport where you can do that. Its called demolition derby! I'm and old school Nascar fan. Beating and banging is one thing. Flat runnin' over somebody is how these rich kids that are handed everything think you're supposed to race. That aggression off track says a lot about why hes like he is on track. Hopefully, he works out his issues and grows up
Guess he need to make like Twenty One Pilots and not believe the hype. Dude had talent at one point, but squandered it so badly chasing ghosts that he ended up talentless and busted (Literally!) Granted he didn't help himself by using up all his connections and somehow both not taking the time to improve to the level people thought he was capable of and having an epically bad taste in rides. If he had just stayed in Xfinity or trucks and tried to work up to bigger teams and hung on to Krispy Kreme longer he could be a champion by now. Now his career is effectively over. Even if he gets reinstated, no team is going to want him anymore.
I really thought his 2019 season was impressive and that he was outperforming in SS Greenlight equipment.
Moving up too soon is bad for any driver
In the United States you’re deemed innocent until proven guilty IN A COURT OF LAW.
Court of public opinion has been on occasion better suited to be making judgement than courts of law. Can’t leave that out.
I never watched the Harvick interview with him because by the 2010's, I stop watching the pre-race coverage because it just wasn't the same as in the early-mid 2000's. When I first heard of Gray when he made his 1st races, his results to me were just average like what you said about how KBM and Roush felt about his performance, so I thought he was just going to have a Ward Burton type of career. When he drove for mid-tier Xfinity teams, he did well but his career ended when he didn't bring in the $$$ for a full-time ride. Now he blew his career for being a violent person and maybe he'll never come back to the sport. Might be a good thing for him and us fans unlike Cody Ware who did come back, and fans are pissed about it, and I don't blame them.
If they didn't run him through the top division like a 🐇 F***s. An he had time to mature. What could have been
