  • TEAM SGG PATREON / somegadgetguy Camera video torture test! Let's shoot some HEAVY video! Looking at the concerns from other reviewers, people are wondering if the XPERIAs this year are overheating. Is this a "problem", or should we be more concerned with video quality? Lining up phones to shoot 4k at 60fps and 4K at 120fps, we can build some data to predict how long a phone SHOULD last out in the field. XPERIA 5IV, OnePlus 10 Pro, Axon 40 Ultra, Pixel 6A, and the Xiaomi 12S Ultra!
If you're relying on a phone to capture memories or get work done, it's critical we know how hard we can drive that phone for real work. Let's see how long we can shoot before these phones tap out!

great video and those are some difficult tests, well done thanks! I guess even pros sometimes need a certain level of long registration capability for some casual live sessions or concerts which don't require DSLR level quality. Since Xperias are practically the only high-end phones that keep SD card slots, this should be their advantage but not a vulnerability caused by not willing to add some cooling components. Just bit of let down, like the 1IV is so close to be a dream phone.

Still, I think the negative reviews on the Sony 1 and Sony 5 were justified.
The biggest setback for purchase is that they're made in a limited quantity. They're sold in limited markets. They're expensive. If I wanted one, I would need to import it which means: risk, middleman fees, import taxes, and No Local Warranty.
I may overlook these major shortcomings. Because the industry is so rotten these days, but that requires no major issues from Sony. Sadly this device has a few.

Now I understand the video recording limits, what about just point and shoot/capturing still images? Michael Fischer is no longer an individual to be trusted. It's been that way for more than a year. He is actually suggested a tablet could be a "professionals" tool. No professional can do all their work of a PC/Laptop. Most professional software doesn't even run on the limited ram available on high powered laptops. Most people in my industry (Assurance) end up sending elite books to double RAM before it can be used. He seems to have an issue with Sony as a brand, complains about the price but keeps telling people to take a chance on a Fold or Flip. Both have actually failed during recent years due to display failure. He is a reviewer for the super stupid and financially foolish.

There is a cell phone case mod I've seen that supposedly helps syphon out some of the heat prolonging the use (albeit, I've seen it more for gaming). They put thermal pads on a piece of heatsink and made holes so the fins stick out of the phone case. The sticky side is stuck on the heatsink and the foamy thermal pad that isn't sticky to the phone and when they put it all together, the back basically has the fins sticking out. You can also buy fans that stick to the back of your phone nowadays just search for "mobile phone cooler" or "mobile phone radiator". idk how effective these are tbh but maybe someone can test them out 😉😉 nudge nudge 😆 some of the more popular phones even have phone cases with built in fans for sale.

Great Video about a much less talked about subject of discussion that really DOES MATTER to all potential customers.
Poor showing by Xiaomi, that is literal deceit, it should just target 45FPS & then Record consistently at 45FPS instead, or, actually limit 4K 60FPS recording lengths too whatever amount of time it can handle before the framerate drops below 59.96FPS.
102FPS and 105FPS with the OnePlus phones also needs to be addressed, and either locked to 90FPS, or, once again limit maximum recording lengths to a lower amount of time.
Sony really pulled out the big guns here!
I would be interested too see if the video that is produced from each phone uses the same bitrate for video & audio as that might also explain differences in what the quality of the output file is like.
I would hope that they all use the same bitrate but Zi suspect that they possibly don't.....
And this now brings into question what the "Audio Recording & Playback" qualities are like on each respective phone, do any of these phones have a static Audio Recording bitrate or does it dynamically adjust?
And I guess you could ask the same question about if the Video bitrate is static or dynamic too!
Theirs far more to these devices than most reviewers tend to cover and it can be frustrating as a potential customer when trying to make an informed purchasing decision.
Once again, thanks for the amazing content, and keep up the great work, your community loves you for the effort that you put into making such incredible videos!
    Peace to you my dude!

On a side note, Sony just announced an active cooler case for the Xperia 1 IV, however, it is tailored for mobile gaming usage, no opening for the lenses, which is a pity, considering the users can take longer high def video with the cooler on.
I gotta admit, I am a bit skeptic to get the Xperia 1 IV phone, given that I have had a bad experience with camera overheating and shutdown while shooting high resolution and frame rate video, in this case, a DJI Action 2 action camera which I like the size but not so much on how the unit's thermal dispense method.

I know this is a bit off topic for this video, but what is the state of recording to SD cards in the Xperia? Specifically, can you record clips greater than 4 GB to the SD card now if you format it to XFAT (or some other file system than FAT32)? I may be a bit behind, but I wasn't sure if this was fixed across all the brands yet.

I also do like the idea of wired headphones which again Samsung have got rid of. For this was looking at the Sony and was a bit worried about the overheating but heard some improvement has been made with the firmware upgrades (but this did sound a bit suspect to me for as understand was a hardware issue not a software issue). I can't see me using the 4K video shooting much and heard at normal HD quality video shooting it takes longer to heat up. Still not sure what to do so at the moment still got my Samsung S8.

Fully would make it harder but it's entirely possible to keep a phone's "lens unit" directly up against glass while submerged so as to be able to capture video as clean as it would be out of the water. Obviously audio would need to be captured separately but most professional footage is captured that way, anyhow. Would be a fun experiment, for sure. Hey, isn't it possible for manufacturers to include a feature where if a certain quality+framerate (Say 4K@60 or 4K@120fps) can't be maintained any longer, an option to lower down quality and/or framerate (depending on which the user prioritises) should show up, tapping "ok" will lower them, otherwise "cancel" will stop recording
That would give more freedom and flexibility depending on situation instead of either losing the frames or the recording itself
