It's time to share all my thoughts about the Sony Xperia 5 V in this in-depth review - it hasn't been confirmed for the US, so we don't have a dollar price, but costing £850 in the UK, €999 and ¥ 149,600 in Japan, it's a high-end offering that still undercuts most flagships, sitting at around the $1,100 mark. Comparing it directly to the Xperia 5 IV - and boy is this an interesting upgrade option. It's cheaper than the 5 IV was when it launched, is available with just 128GB storage in Europe, but 256GB in Asia, and its screen has really visible off-angle color-shifting, so it isn't quite the Xperia 1 V the 5-series once was. But in the same breath, the main camera is fantastic, the Xperia 5 V doesn't overheat, its battery lasts for absolutely ages, and it's a well-built phone with IP68 water and dust resistance. Oh, and it has a headphone jack - wired audio fans will love that - we do.
Check out the full review and let me know what you think of the Xperia 5 V in the comments below - a marriage of compromises or a perfectly balanced package?

Could not agree more with this. Don't know why people are so obsessed with thin bezels, especially since it is a device you are wrapping your hand around. There are more important perks such as battery life, small form factor, etc....

Sometimes, I prioritize aesthetics over functionality. Phones with thin bezels feel like holding an elegant masterpiece. Even though I now have the S24, I still admire my S20; in my opinion, it has the most beautiful phone screen ever made with its perfect slight curve on all sides, except for the ugly back.

I'm quite happy that I sold my Pixel 7A and got this phone. For me it's the battery life, the small form factor, and the photo quality. The scenario for me is that I can take this phone on one-day hiking trips, take some photos, and then the navigation tools like Alltrails won't drain the battery by the end of the day. It can be a struggle with other single-day battery phones and the thoughts of getting lost in the woods can be quite stressful thus making the trip less enjoyable.

Great and honest review and thank you for that!
I got the phone 2 weeks ago and eventhough I am a huge Sony fan I feel a bit let down.
I can already spot the navigation bar buttons burnt in the display and I keep my brightness on auto. I can also confirm the blueish tint when you view the phone from the sides (makes it feel so cheap). Only 128gb of internal storage paired with the restrictions of Android 13 making some apps useless when it comes to using Sd card storage and the disappointing screen quality don't justify this high price point. Cameras do produce nice pictures, but far from impressive in my view, even when you fiddle with the multiple settings the apps provide. What's positive is the sound quality, the impressive battery life and the snappy performance. However I don't consider this phone much of an upgrade compared to my Xz1, which is still going strong after 6 years of faithful service.

So glad that I purchased 2x Xperia 5 IV (1 for backup). Coming from an Samsung A52s.. this more seems like a downgrade all the way. Especially the screen and the bezels. 5 IV has everything the V has including notification LED, zoom lens, much cheaper price. No more overheating issues since the last two patches. So see no reason to buy an Xperia 5 V. IV is the perfect phone with no missing features.

Great to read this! I am also thinking about changing my A52 and I was looking for the Xperia 10V because of the price but then I was more tempted for the 5V for the many excellent camera reviews I have seen and the phone size, however, now that I have seen a lot about the 5IV I think that would be a better option and your comments seems to confirm it.

  • @GregoryLopez1
    @GregoryLopez1 11 місяців тому +11

Watched this from an Xperia 5 III. Sad they killed the telephoto on the V. Would be curious to see a comparison in good and low light at 4.4x zoom between the III & V, but agree that no 2.5x zoom from the IV isn't a big loss.
No good zoom plus worse screen makes me think this phone has too many compromises. I probably won't be looking for a new phone for another year or two so will wait and see what the 5 VI or VII brings.
Also kudos on calling out Sony's bad update policy. Their battery saver feature is top notch. It's unfortunate the phone gets hampered for long term use through poor updates.

A telephoto camera will always beat a crop zoom in perspective: telephoto is more flat with less sherical distortion, making it great for portraits and product photography. No sensor technology can ever change that fact

    • @kosiranze
      @kosiranze 5 місяців тому

That is just not how it works in reality.
Let's make an optical comparison between telephoto on mk iv vs main but cropped on mk v.
Telephoto on iv has a 5mm diagonal sensor with actual focal length of 7mm. At f 2.4 it has an iris size of 2.9mm
Standard sensor on v has a diagonal of about 11m and a 6mm focal length. F stop is 1.9 which makes the iris about 3.1mm
Meaning iris size is slightly bigger on the v main camera and with the similar physical focal length totaling to the roughly the same amount per sensor area. New sensor being 48mp vs 12 on the iv telephoto, also means that at 2x cropm you still have about the same amount of pixels to work with with about the same cropped diagonal on the sensor.... leading to better results on the cropped main camera on v due to better sensor and optics.
And the perspective with cropping o the main camera stays the same as uncropped telephoto, because distance from the lens to the subject is what determines the perspective and not the lenses focal length

I end up putting phone in case anyway so the tiny differences in bezels width do not worry me. I won't notice it anyway. I will however notice not having wireless charging AND headphones jack AND memory card slot. You either get wireless charging in flagships, or 3.5mm jack and memory card in more budget friendly phones. And with how I use my phone I need all these features 😅
Wireless charging saved me from buying new phone when after 4 years USB-C socket in my phone stopped connecting properly most of the time, I still got 1 year of use by charging wirelessly. I use Bluetooth headphones a lot, but there is nothing worse if they're out of power. Now imagine not having option to switch to traditional headphones when you need 😭And extra memory - I don't think I need to explain that one 🙄
So - although I was definitely not planning on buying Sony originally - now I don't really see myself choosing different phone when I switch to new one. Just not decided yet between 5 and 1 versions...🤔

    Four reasons I'm considering this:
    1. The reportedly detailed and realistic image processing.
    2. The expandable storage. Chucking a 512GB card on there and forgetting about storage has its appeal, though I'll import the 256GB version to avoid an issue with WhatsApp storage if I opt for it.
    3. The battery life. I'm using a Zenfone 9, and it's pretty formidable batterywise. I'm guessing the Gen 2 will be a step-up from an already impressive 8+ Gen 1.
    4. The headphone jack and accompanying audio settings.
    Deterrents:
    1. Price.
    2. Screen issues.
    3. Possibility of fingerprint reader going kaput (a common problem with Xperia models, apparently).
    4. Heard of apps crashing or unloading in the background.

I have the 5ii so I was thinking those with older models might want the upgrade and not someone with the 1V. These are the reasons I may go for the 5V
      - 5V battery lasts longer
      - Screen is sharp enough and more energy efficient but not as good as 1V. Personally don't care about the color shift at odd angles
      - 5V has bigger bezels compared to predecessors and 1v. I want to see it in person, but it doesn't look as bad as I think
      - I'm not a camera person so don't care too much about the removals or new additions
      - Finally I like the Xperia android skin even though OS updates are only for two versions. I'm into the Sony ecosystem and care for audio so thinking I'll just get the 5V.
