Great review! I have both but will be letting go of the Zenfone for these (probably subjective): 1. I find that the xperias coupled with their factory casebacks are phenomenally good in your hand - never slippery and with a bit of added thickness they become extremely secure in your hand for one handed operation. I struggle to keep a secure hold of the Zenfone with or without it's caseback. 2. Hi to all Sony users. Is it possible to use on Xperia 5 IV 1 physical sim+ eSim+ microSD card simultaneously? And one more question regarding the photos. Is this phone makes such grat photos in auto mode,or by using PRO application? Thanks in advance.
I would like to point out that when it comes to gaming, the zenfone got the xperia beat by quite a bit. The sd8+ gen1 is running just significantly better almost having a locked 60 fps on Genshin impact while the xperia should have 45 ish with lots of dips.
people don't buy phone because of casing and charger...I would prioritize battery life, build quality and how hot the device when operating may determine the decision.
The review is really helpful for me to decide between these 2 compact flighips. One question I'm curious about, what about the heating condition for each device? Does 5IV heats up fast and does it affect the phone usage? (Web streaming, camera usage)
So far no issue. If you use the camera with wide range or HDR or the external display it will give you a heat and overheating warning but nothing as dramatic as I encountered at the beginning with the 1 IV
A lot of heating issues only happens when you turn on 4K and HDR. If you strictly 1080p, there's heat issues but no where near bad. Even better if you don't shoot video. Normal everyday task seems to not have much heat.
It's easier to hold the Xperia without a case. Try it. The Zenfone is actually harder to hold securely. and if you add the factory case back to the Xperia it becomes fantastic in the hand. Got both phones.

@@lltechview to be completely honest, with a Pixel 4a, in not entirely sure if those devices rectify the price. Only if you need extreme gaming, or are serious about photography ;)
Nice review, but i picked Zenfone 9 over Xperia 5 IV due to the value that Asus offers in a package. I mean if Sony had released in earlier and sale them slightly cheaper (consider they didn't offer anything in the box), then I would had consider Xperia 5 IV. I have to admit that Asus does have some work to done especially in the camera software department (and I still hope they will extend the security updates by at least an additional year or 2, make it same as Sony), but I still really enjoy using the Zenfone 9, not to mention that the charging brick included in the Zenfone 9 can be used to charge my ROG laptop as well :)

@@lltechview Yay, I don't really need 4K filming tbh. Just saw quite a lot of reviews saying even running in lower resolution still have issues, that gave me a pause...
It's hard to make out audio quality during the speaker test. Maybe consider an alternative recording setup? The sound isn't clear for both phones, which I doubt is the case if heard in person.
Some phones on their own should have clearer audio capture. That is the cheapest. If you are willing to spend, a broadcast quality microphone is nice. I have been looking at Elgato Wave 3 personally, though it connects to USB and is a mic for a PC/laptop. Not sure if there are portable microphones other than Zoom that are used for recording. I used Takstar Pro 82 headphones to monitor the sound test you made, I suspect the lapel mic might have something to do with the poor audio quality.
@@adminuser5312 The lapel mic is one of the best sounding ones with stereo support I tested so far. The Zoom H2N might be an idea but in the past with its internal mics it was not convincing to me. Maybe I can retest this at one point
Xperia is better than the Zenfone 9 except in battery and maybe performances. I would say that i would go for the Zenfone 9 because i'm not gonna need a great photo sensor, and battery life is important !
Sony didn't manage to tame that dragon, the thinner chassis makes it harder to cool the phone, it heats up especially when using the camera and cuts you off when recording sometimes even shorter vid clips. Watch Michael Fisher's & Juan Bagnell's review you'll see, I think Sony should make an upper midranger with either SD 778G or 870/875, these 8/8+ Gens are very innefficient.
@@MrJoshkm I did not experience any shutdown of overheating. Only had one overheating warning when recording indoors at 24°C with the Vlog Monitor. Though I was able to record my 15 minutes of video just fine.
maybe 2 things you missed are: - sony's own one handed mode. - lowest sound level (i live in old student house and its nice if the sound at night is low af but still hearable) What i personaly would like to know about the xperia 5 iv is if you use native camera app in standard camera mode with burst on if its still possible to shoot single photos with the shutter button. Still need to tweak my homescreen and app page and it`s perfect. Yes I do feel it get warm fast and also think it drains my battery bcz of it, but just have it for two days now so mybe it need to learn and the battery get better so I cannot speak about it yet.
Hi to all Sony users. Is it possible to use on Xperia 5 IV 1 physical sim+ eSim+ microSD card simultaneously? And one more question regarding the photos. Is this phone makes such grat photos in auto mode,or by using PRO application?
Thanks in advance.
1 physical sim + esim + microSD should work. You can get good photos in auto mode and great ones with pro mode.
I would like to point out that when it comes to gaming, the zenfone got the xperia beat by quite a bit. The sd8+ gen1 is running just significantly better almost having a locked 60 fps on Genshin impact while the xperia should have 45 ish with lots of dips.
I already own a good compact camera. I just need a good compact phone. With a 3.5mm jack. The choice is obvious. Thank you.
Both is excellent 😌
Alright I think I'll get the Sony. But a question - would you have preferred that the Sony had a plastic back like the 10 IV instead of glass?
a possibility
Also note, some sellers have been selling refurbished Sony Xperia 5s for a long time now
people don't buy phone because of casing and charger...I would prioritize battery life, build quality and how hot the device when operating may determine the decision.
Which is something that you won't notice a huge difference here
The review is really helpful for me to decide between these 2 compact flighips.
@@joelconolly5574 I am more towards photography than video capturing. It's a relief to know that. Thanks
@@lltechview yes... The feedback of 1 IV is very discouraging. Glad to know that 5 IV is having a better start at launching... Thank you.
@@joelconolly5574 How's the thermal management shooting 1080p? I pretty much exclusive shoot that instead of 4K.
Micro SD card slot was the feature that sold it for me.
ZenFone wins because of the non-slippery material. I'm tired of being forced to use a case because the naked phone is so slippery.
It's easier to hold the Xperia without a case. Try it. The Zenfone is actually harder to hold securely. and if you add the factory case back to the Xperia it becomes fantastic in the hand. Got both phones.
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
It would be so easy if the zenfone had that sd slot
Thanks!
It seems that the speakers of the Sony sound better than those of the Asus, no?
xperia is already best looking phone if u instal nova luncher and set up your android in best possible way phone will be totaly easy to use and so on
Thanks for the really informative video!
Do you think the sound quality of both 3.5mm jacks can come close to an entry-level independent DAC?
Not really but for a smartphone quite good
I would have considered the Sony if they were available in the Australian market
Many thanks for your great review 🙏
Nice review , sir! but I have to say that, regarding speakers comparisons, for me,maybe it's better if you use a different microphone , or just skip that demonstration 😉✌🏼
Are you going to make a video comparing the 5 V and the Zenfone 10?
I don't plan on buying those two. Only if Asus and Sony send me the devices or people donate enough to get them
@@lltechview Understandable. Out of curiosity, why did you want to buy the 5 IV and 9 but not their successors?
@@cooscountysafety2764 Because they were good devices.. The successor of the Zenfone 9 is simply a downgrade and the 5 Mark 5 is great but I used my budget already on other devices.
@@lltechview the Zenfone 10 is a downgrade from the Zenfone 9? This is the first time I've heard this. How so?
@@cooscountysafety2764 Look at the cameras. Front facing camera no AF or 4k. Ultrawide cam on the back no AF or 4k60fps anymore. Main cam basically the same as previous version.
End of the video is comparing getting a free case & charger on the Zenphone to a better camera & expandable storage on the Sony? The Xperia is better, but more expensive. You get what you pay for.
Not to mention, USB 3.1 and video out. Sony is much better in my opinion, and I think it looks better as well.
I would pick the Xperia if it was the same size of the Zenfone.
Do you think the Xperia is too small? As it really feels smaller than the Zenfone thanks to the slimmer profile and narrower design
Thank you for this great comparison. But what is G cam that you mention to get for the Zenfone?
GCam is the google camera. See my other video here: ua-cam.com/video/nupkELMJck4/v-deo.html
Thank you! Regarding the compact factor - which one for you is better to carry in the pocket (heat, non-slip etc) and easier to wield, especially with one hand. Imagine you're traveling and often have only one hand free to quickly look up things text or take photos, which of the devices is more effective here?
Actually I used both like this without issue. I still am undecided. I like the Xperias slimmer width but the Zenfone's back feels so good
@@lltechview to be completely honest, with a Pixel 4a, in not entirely sure if those devices rectify the price. Only if you need extreme gaming, or are serious about photography ;)
Thank you for your video! You did mention that Sony had a video out, do you know if Sony supports desktop mode like Samsung DEX? Thanks!
It does. But it is barebone. Too far from desktop mode from Samsung, Motorola, LG.
Nope
Any eye strain issues like apple OLED?
Thanks for the comparison. At 21:12 you say the Sony is grippy but at the start you say it is slippery due to the glass back?
Yeah maybe poor choice of words. You can grip it easily as you are able to wrap your hand around it more easily. The back is slippery though.
Hi. May I know is the overheating issue on Tue xperia 5 IV really that worse? Or has Sony improved the temperature control?
I personally had no big overheating issues. No update arrived yet
@@lltechview Is is possible to make a video with 5 IV with normal setting 4k video? Just to know how long you can recording
Thanks bro for the comparison.
Do you have any thermal issue when filming/taking pictures? Still deciding go for 5iv or 1iv, not a game player, just a everyday user...
Did not experience any but keep in mind every smartphone overheats at one point if you film long enough in high quality 4k video and high framerate
@@lltechview Yay, I don't really need 4K filming tbh. Just saw quite a lot of reviews saying even running in lower resolution still have issues, that gave me a pause...
I'll still pick Xperia for future proofing
It's hard to make out audio quality during the speaker test. Maybe consider an alternative recording setup? The sound isn't clear for both phones, which I doubt is the case if heard in person.
I am open for suggestions
@@lltechview perhaps hold your lavalier mic slightly further, it sounded to me like the audio was clipping (or close to)
Could you do a soundtest between the Sony Xperia 1 IV and 5 IV?
Yeah
Both are very similar
Please Compare Sony Xperia 5 iv vs IPhone 14 Pro Max Camera Comparison.... Waiting Bro
Xperia is better than the Zenfone 9 except in battery and maybe performances. I would say that i would go for the Zenfone 9 because i'm not gonna need a great photo sensor, and battery life is important !
I have to say you only review phones I'm also interested in.
I saw those but they were definitely on preproduction devices. Means different software and probably also hardware.
@@lltechview Oh that's nice to hear, so they no longer suffer from that?
@@MrJoshkm I did not experience any shutdown of overheating. Only had one overheating warning when recording indoors at 24°C with the Vlog Monitor. Though I was able to record my 15 minutes of video just fine.
@@lltechview Seems the problem has not gone away, 24°c is quite low for it to give that warning.
I was trying to fix my v60, but I accidentally broke the cable to the cellular antenna. Now it's basically an ipod. So, I preordered the Xperia 5
maybe 2 things you missed are:
- sony's own one handed mode.
- lowest sound level (i live in old student house and its nice if the sound at night is low af but still hearable)
What i personaly would like to know about the xperia 5 iv is if you use native camera app in standard camera mode with burst on if its still possible to shoot single photos with the shutter button. I cant seem to get this on my xperia 5ii. they should have put 1 second delay between single and burst shot when holding the shutter button for that XD
Yeah the burst will always take bursts
Love the 5 mark iv color
Dont care about sd card, wireless charging, heapdhone jack. I care processor and battery life. Asus win.
Are there Problems with overheating with the Xperia 5 IV Device?
I onlynhad it show me the overheating sign adter over 12 minites 4k 30fps recording with the vlogging monitor indoors 24°C.
No other issue so far in every day to day usage
Great review! one thing though, zenfone9 is stated to have UFS 3.1 on Asus website. is this similar to USB 3.1 or sumtin different.?
It is something different. It is the internal flash memory specification.
USB on the Zenfone 9 is sadly only 2.0
@@lltechview wow. Quick reply lol. Noted. Thanks 👍
Hallo, sehr schönes Video, danke dafür. :)
Kannst du mir bitte genauer erklären, was du mit gcam meinst?

I have never used side mounted fingerprint sensor (cum power button) in past. Hence a question:
If I touch/press the button once, does it only wake up the phone or unlocks it completely? I frequently wake up my phone without unlocking it, to see time, notifications, etc. Can I do it in Zenphone/Xperia with a fingerprint cum power button?
If you use another finger it will wake to lockscreen otherwise might unlock as the sensor are fast reading your fingerprint

At what angle is the polarization of both screens? Look at the screen through your sunglasses (or a camera polarization filter) and rotate until you no longer see the screen. Is the polarization diagonal, portrait or landscape?
Can either phone use multiple cameras simultaneously?
No word on software updates? Just compared the specs☹️
I missed that. In terms of software updates both are on par. 2 big Android upgrades and 3-4 years security updates
Sorry another hard pass for me for Sony. I bought Xperia 1 III couple months ago but I was not impressed, I only liked the 4K screen and camera but battery life was dismal and I don't like UI. I'm a Sony fanboy I like their products especially the Alpha A7 cameras that I use professionally and personally but not yet with the Xperia. I would have loved the Asus Zenfone 9 to have wireless charging and microSD card expansion.
I guess I'll keep my LG G8 for now.
Great thing is they fixed short battery life with the Mark 4 series. So 5 IV is really a beast in terms of battery life.
Expandable storage SD card slot that a huge win for Sony tbh my requirement is a headphone jack and a micro SD card slot
btw i got the 5ii and its 70mm telelens. does the 5 iv make better zoom shots at that range or even further? it feels a bit like a downgrade to me from sony :( and especially with the 5v no telelens at all :(. what is your opinion on that? i saw some video saying that the 5v even has better zoom shots then the iv but i saw another video again at which they show the zoom shots and the iv seems better. i really hope this year the 5 series will have a telelens again. (i secretly hope a telelens like the 5iii but probably they will not do that :(
I was not able to test it. But yeah 2x or 2.5x zoom should be better from the sensor crop alone than a dedicated tele lense with smaller sensor.
has there been any change in the thermal performance of the 5 iv since you first got it, similar to how the 1 iv was improved from updates?
I did not get any update yet
5:00 like a shuriken hahaha, thanks for the video.
Honestly love my zenfone 9, but non expandable storage is annoying since a 5th of my storage is taken by my music, I have to keep my emulator roms on a usb-c thumb drive, and I have to pay for cloud storage for photos but I usually just transfer most of my photos to my tablet or old icloud. I wanted a phone with a headphone jack and it works great, but expandable storage is a must so if the 10 doesn't have that I'm switching to Sony
Hello,.I saw a video where they say that the refresh rate of the Xperia 5 IV suddenly drops to 60 hhz, it that happened to you?
Never happened to me so far
I would like to know which one feels hotter during use.
Sony. Definitely.
The Xperia
did they fixed those issues with a native camera?
Hello. Help tell me please. I shoot a lot of car inspections before buying. I choose cars for people. I want to buy myself a phone with a good video camera. just to make the video shoot well. Is Led notification have few colours to each app like on the older xperias?
Did Sony 5 iv got Android 14 already?
It should. For my device it did not arrive yet.

I'm really torn between last year's SX5III and the ZF9
My priorities are: compact, quick-draw camera, quality camera (auto is fine too), as well as headphone jack.
What do you think the lack of SD card on the ZF9?
@@danaltaras1095 Yes that works. Both are good phones. I like the Zenfone a lot but especially when it comes to the camera the Xperia 5 IV is better. I would say also the 5 III should perform better with its newest software.
can the sony do dual physical sim instead of SD card like previous sony's?
Nope
@@lltechview Thanks for answering! one more question, how doe the haptics on the 5IV compare to the 1IV and 1iii?
@@yahnomega 1 IV and 5 IV are basically the same. Generations better than on the 1 III
The IV series takes 1 physical sim and 1 eSIM + the SD card
Does the Zenfone 9 have Bypass charging feature when gaming, which is available in Sony and ROG phones?
I did not see this in settings or game geniee
It must be an Xperia thing,'cause I always flip my XZ1 Compact in that exact way when getting it out from the pocket! 🤣
Do you still use it or has it been replaced? If so, by which one? I am struggling to replace it with the 5 III.
@@Metaxas360 may I ask why you are struggling?
Anyway, I replaced it with a Xperia 5 IV. I'm satisfied but I'm waiting for a new UI with Android 14. My old XZ1 Compact with Android 9 has almost a better UI experience than the actual Android 13 on 5 IV (e.g there's no. NFC switch among the top menu buttons)
@@mennio100 biggest issue is the size. I mean even though the Sony 5 is a rare species of compact phones nowadays, its size is still quite big compared to the xz1c. It is no single handed phone. At least not for me. Also 21:9 is not really useful. I think reason for that is Sonys extraordinary taste but also the battery that requires space. And width is a key point for compactness. In most cases you watch 16:9 footage and photos are shot also in that format.
I agree about the UI. The xz1c is still almost perfect. LED could be also brighter. Speaker a bit louder. And where is the standard gallery? I installed old apk to still have it.
I wish they would just bring a 5 compact in 16:9 :D
Argh, I don't know.
What do you prefer on the 5 above the xz1c (features, etc) ?
@@Metaxas360 I agree with you on the form factor, there are too many apps and too much video content not optimized for it .
