[SONY XPERIA 5 IV REVIEW]
Back in May, I called Sony’s Xperia 1 IV “An Entire Film Studio In Your Pocket.” The trouble is … it’ll cost nearly $1600 when it finally launches in the US later this month.
So Sony did what Sony does: packaged up most of the important parts of the 1 IV into a more petite package with a similarly shrunken shelf price. I’m Michael Fisher and I took the new Sony Xperia 5 IV to Sun Valley, Idaho to see how much compromise you need to settle for when you buy an Xperia for $999.

The audio recording is probably the best I've heard in any review. Very similar to the external setup.
I noticed that. It's excellent
I noticed that too. The on-board mic outdoor did a better job than the Rode mic also used at one point early in the video.
Wanted to say the same. After having Rode Pro Plus and GoI was like "wat...phone...waaaaaat".
He can blame Samsung manufacturing process for Snapdragon 8 gen1 overheating.
Yea? Try xiaomi redmi 11 pro plus 5g
With jbl speakers ?? the most terrible sound !!! .....the 1 phone 🤳 on hisssss
Sony could've used the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and not downgrade their telephoto camera if they wanted to appeal to a mass audience, but no. Just Sony being Sony. Credits where it's due, good of them to keep the headphone jack and microSD slot.
That zoom lens came at the expense of telephoto sadly
Edit: I meant battery
It's supposed to be the cheaper device.
Xperia's aren't made for a mass audience.
The price would have increased by like 200 to 300 then. And then we have the issue. It's too expensive
The "mass audience" doesn't care about processors and all that tech stuff. Give the average user a phone with the SD8 Gen 1 and a older one like the 865 and they wouldn't know the difference or care
I appreciate Sony in the mobile space. Seems like they get closer and closer every release. And it sucks to say every year that I'm looking forward to next year's Xperia phones, but I like the direction they're going. If only they could mitigate some of the pain points you've highlighted here.
"Closer and closer" at that price point ain't it.
This is a step back in almost every way from the 5 iii though. Battery life and screen brightness are really the only improvements.
@@TehPotentialz Battery life, speaker sound and screen brightness for sure. These 3 upgrades don't justify the price tag.
@@JooshTinedoll Depending on who you ask they are already on point. Take me for example, I need a fast phone, for it often times replaces a laptop. I also need a headphone jack and sd card slot. Now, how many options do I have, if I want the fastes possible SoC, a headphone jack and an sd card slot? Yes, Sony exactly and nothing else. If all you care about is an easy to use good enough camera and great all around phone, then all the others do the job just fine. But, only Sony manages to satisfy those, who need something extra, like me.
@@leviathan5207 Exactly, don’t really understand all the copy n’ paste people saying “price is too high” like compared to what? The same people will pay the apple tax.
I'm on my third Xperia, a 1 III. The 4k displays in all of my Xperias have been overkill. The overheating while shooting video is very annoying. The auto camera mode meh. However, for me these are small sacrifices. The headphone jack and expandable memory are huge for me. The front facing stereo (real L/R stereo) speakers are wonderful. I'm not worried about it getting wet. The battery life is solid. I love that it's mostly stock Android. The photo pro app is fantastic when you have the time/means to mess with it. I went to Colorado in May and got landscape photos so good that I didn't miss my DSLR. And as is the case with a lot of Sony products over the years, these age very well. My last two Xperias made it 2 and 3 years respectively before being replaced, still looked and worked great, batteries still held charges very well. If Xperias are niche phones, then I absolutely belong in that niche crowd.
Bought my 5 III back in april. Upgraded from my trusty old LG G6 that had had a tough life. My must-haves were micro SD and headphone jack and wanted the 8-series snapdragon, because I do plan on keeping this phone until it truly dies. The only option within reach of my budget was the 5 III and now I couldn’t be happier. Still plan on refurbishing that G6 though and keep as a back-up device
Well I'm honestly thinking my next phone will either be the 2022 moto razr... or one of these Xperias
@@onelyone6976 Oh man I had an LG G6 as well. Upgraded to the V40, then to the S10+ and now to my S20 Ultra. I still miss how tough my G6 was and that freakin physical finger print sensor
@@Dimondminer11 it got me through 4 and a half years of abuse, it will now barely charge because the charging port is busted, the rear glass is completely in spider-web cracks and the camera lens is so scratched it compromises image quality. At the point I switched the battery still got me through a day, but only just, if I would go out in the evening I would have to charge it beforehand. The display also has slight image retention/burn-in which is interesting because it’s an IPS LCD panel, not an OLED.
Fuck yeah. still using XZ2 Premium and being hapy about it, although it's weight proved to be problematic from time to time
If you noticed, Michael Fisher is reviewing this phone as a content creator would. No mention of updates, but he did stress the overheating because that is what content creators would take note on. Great, well-rounded review!
Honestly that's what I love about his reviews so much and I've noticed that too. If the device he's reviewing has been advertised to be geared toward a certain type of user, he will tailor his review for the type of user that device has been created for. I notice this the most with the laptop reviews. Many reviewers just use the same generic script on all of the devices going through the same talking points, and to be fair Michael does occasionally to because there are some things you HAVE to mention...but he does it in a way that will keep the person the device was created for engaged while also making it understandable and entertaining for everyone else. Michael is the best tech reviewer hands down.
I think it's waaay to focused on his own needs. Is it a good phone for people, that just wants a good phone? I'm still not sure.
Props to Sony for including the 3.5mm jack, the sd card slot and the notification LED!!!
What annoys me the most is that my first thought seeing the phone was “Will this one overheat like the past models?” Sure enough same issue. Until that issue is solved it’s going to be hard to move and significant numbers of these phones. No one who is remotely into mobile hardware is going to attempt to live with a phone that overheats when taking photos or videos.
Updates fixed the heating issues
@@SonyEnthusiast damn they did that in 16 minutes?
I would prefer is tech companies started including a portable ice pack case in the box lol
@@SonyEnthusiast lol no it did not
@@baconwizard no heating issues after I did the updates on my 1 III 💪
I use it now for 2 months and the software updates really fixed the overheating problems. Yes it still gets warm, but in everyday use its quite stable and won't overheat. I only take pictures with it and film very short movies. That will do excellent.
How's the gaming performance? How hot does it get
@@gunzlingerbil it's good.. it gets warm off course, but never had really problems with it.
@@jaimywieanders3613 thanks man. So it won't get super hot playing demanding games like genshin?
Kudos to Sony for keeping the headphone jack and microSD card slot. But it's quite disappointing that the usual weaknesses of Sony phones remain.
The only weakness of the CPU, we need the "Sony brand" CPU
Yup! These are the reasons I have yet to even consider a Sony phone as my main phone.
Sony has to make bigger strides to fix their compromises. Them in the space is very welcome with the hardware features they bring.
I don't know if it's just me but those video and picture samples look exceptional to me. Even compared to my iphone 13. Most colors look a lot more natural with a couple like red being punched up a bit and it looks quite nice. And the video bitrate and stabilization looks really solid and doesn't have the phone blur on any movement in the video. Super cool.
Yeah, all of them are exceptional it surprised me too. But as always, you can't beat good post-processing at low light
Natural is overrated
Low light photos still sucks
@@GreatGrandmasterWang If you take rushed shots. If you take a few extra seconds with the camera settings then you'll get better than the typical auto processed smartphone shot.
@@avenuePad then the photo opportunity passed
Heck the pro stuff, it still has a headphone jack, no notch or punch hole in the screen, great battery life, real stereo speakers, a good camera system with a couple downsides (but no one is perfect), it's a smaller size so it's easier to handle, etc. Sony is the only brand left that I actually want to use, and have been for the past few years. They're filling an important gap in the market. The overheating is unfortunate. I haven't experienced it on my 5ii or my older XZ1, but I wonder if it's something they can fix or at least reduce for this phone with an update.
Honestly I hated notches and still do. However punch holes have gotten so small they don't bother me. However what does is the lack of a headphone jack on my S20 Ultra
id rather have my phone to be still relevant to security and android versions even after 5 years... the reason im getting myself S22U over any Sony though i always wanting a Sony..
@@blitzer25blitz62 It's true, unfortunately. 2 years at best. 😔
I am typing this comment with my XZ1 and it does overheat.
@@adetunjichristopheroyewusi1887 Pain. I've never had any issues with it. 😢
Calling overheating your phone after less than a minute calling a compromise is a very big understatement… Even more on a device made for video and photography (on device content creation)
Oh Sony! You keep missing the mark. I really wanted a Sony phone to be my next device. By the way, Mr. Mobile has the best reviews on UA-cam! 5 Stars!
I agree, and I love the usual suspects too
He’s way better than shitty overrated MKBHD.
I think I'll stick with the 5iii still a phenomenal phone with no overheating and probably much cheaper Now
I guess the 5 mark ii still the best sony 5 series
@@RenrenYaz Thanks to the 865cpu, the CPU seems so important
The shutter button, notification led, headphone jack, and expandable storage are making me rethink my iPhone quite a bit right now...
Same. I have the 13 Pro but I miss some elements of android.
I like the transparency (the disclaimer part).
Btw, I like that tall screen with no notch and no round corners + symetrical top and bottom bezzels.
I bought the Xperia 5 II even though everyone said it's just mid.
I disagree. The headphone jack is superb, trust me, I use them with the DCA Aeon Noire and it's great. The stereo speakers, once you switch on dolby atmos, make the earphone-less youtube experience not only bearable but quite frankly enjoyable. And the camera app has turned me from someone who never took any pictures for fun into someone who loves messing about with the settings to either capture a great raw to then edit or experiment with shutter speed for artistic shots.
If you don't care about music, small quality of life improvements or having fun, whilst taking pictures, then Sony is not for you. But, if you do, then I'd suggest to give them a go, the next time you shop for a phone.
How are the updates, I've heard that Sony supports the phone for only 2 years?
You need to host a podcast Michael I would tune in every week😄
I had an Xperia Z2 way back in the day. I loved that phone. Camera was amazing and the battery would last me several 2-3 days through school. The only part I wasn't crazy about was UI tweaks. It's really sad to see how much they've compromised through the years.
I also had a z2 like 4 years, then moved on oneplus 7 pro. I sometimes long for a Sony phone but looking how they don't improve enough compared to other brands, I don't want to go back.
The greatest phone they made! #Z2
My Xperia Z3 is one of my favorite phones ever, sadly only used it for a bit and then cracked the screen...
Honestly, now that my 7t is showing it's age, the Xperia 5 iii or iv are really enticing to me.
My USB-C port is showing its age, not holding cables as well anymore, so I'll be able to slow that down with wireless charging and a headphone jack. Also micro SD is a super big win for me, especially with how many pictures I take. I don't take as many as I used to on my phone, but it's still a huge win in my opinion.
I got a 5 IV. It is a very fine piece of kit, I hope to use it for many years to come.
My only annoyance is that 4k60 and other high speed camera stuff is locked away from the SD card, which is incredibly annoying, because if I were to put the same card in my a6400 it wouldn't complain at all about the speed!
Can't even do burst modes onto the card!
Otherwise, great phone! So glad to have all of my music on a large bit of external storage instead of filling up the internal stuff.
Really a pity with that heat issue. It's been a problem all the way back to the first Xperia 5 😕
This one too? 1IV not enough? What is wrong with Sony? Expensive as hell. Should have best heatpipes.
lol i had this problem at Z5 (Compact) btw he still has better camera then Samsung until S20 series!
The worse for me was the xz1 they just couldn't find a way to cool the damn thing while filming in 4k. They expect you to just suck it up because it's a "sony"
Heating issue is not with Sony xperia 5 iv it's with every Snapdragon 8 gen 1 based on Samsung fabrication. The snapdragon 8 gen 1 plus with TSMC run cooler and more energy efficiency than Snapdragon 8 gen 1. It is problem with Samsung fabrication not with Sony xperia 5 iv
@@tanmay4703 Yes, they should have gone for a different chipset. Maybe a mid-tier with good temps and then lower the price as well. Carl Pei specifically reasoned the choice for the Nothing phone chipset was to avoid Samsung's overheating issue.
Thank you! Just put a preorder. Was thinking to get an iphone 14 but at this point I think I would get more from Sony.
I had the Xperia 5 II then switched to iPhone 13 pro, now switching back.
This was a long ask at $999. But just ordered it @ SonyStore for $799. Still best displays over time for me; along with other upgrades. Favorite phone over the years was my Z3. The best Christmas presents are the ones you buy yourself, no?
How has it held up now? Do you still like it and is it still performing good? I may upgrad to this later in the year.
I've got an Xperia 1ii, and I use it to film for my own channel. I love the involved workflow of the Cinema Pro app and the versatility of all those settings. These days when I think of what my dream smartphone would be, it is basically always from the basis of the Xperia 1.
Slazem se sa Vama. I ja volim svoj 1 mark II. Samo Sony Xperia 1 dolazi u obzir - sledeci moze biti Sony Xperia Pro Ili Sony Xperia 1 mark 5.
I just love MrMobile reviews, feels like old school magazine just someone was reading to me :D It always just captures that feeling that I also get when and if I use/try at least the device. And I also want to see Sony finally succeed with a phone after years of struggle...
The audio clarity from the front facing camera was impressive! But it's disappointing that the heating is an issue for a camera focused on content creation.
Why do all reviewers fail to mention the very important settings that they were using when the phone overheated? Resolution, framerate, HDR, etc. 4k video recording is unnecessary unless you're making videos for big screens, and you definitely don't need 4k at higher than 30fps. Even when making content for youtube, most people don't watch at resolutions that high, and like you said in this review 4k on a smartphone (what everyone uses to watch videos) is overkill, so there's no real need to have 4k video in the first place.
Shame, Sony skimping out on thermal management and not going for the 8+G1, means the base S22 is at least $200 cheaper and a significantly stiff competition from the Zenphone 9.
Marketing towards creators and having the phone basically die 30 seconds into a video recording is straight up questionable. Japanese summers would kill this phone's cameras in a heartbeat.
Definitely an almost phone.
At this point, the thermal issues on their phones almost makes you think they're doing it on purpose!
This thermal issue has been going for YEARS before the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC.
@@ShellymanStudios I know, and I have to ask why? Sure, the first-gen 8xx chipsets from Qualcomm were terrible, and the heat was so bad on some Xperia models that it melted the glue around the case and allowed water in - so much so that Sony stopped marketing the water resistance as they had before.
But, even though modern Snapdragon SoCs can still be quite toastie, NO other other manufacturer (TTBOMK) has the same issue with their devices. The only other phone(s) I recall having similar problems was the LG G3 and G4 (G4 especially bad) but LG solved the issue after that. Why not Sony?
@@JonathanMorris777 And that's a good question honesty. Maybe Sony don't wanna fix them because they don't simply care. They just want your money and nothing else. It's pretty shameful if you ask me.
Like imagine recording a dream football match and the moment of hattrick is coming and you eager to record that, just for the phone to suddenly killed your recording session because of just a little heat accumulated inside the phone. Sony needs to stop this whole camera shutdown bs.
This takes me back to my first smartphone, the Sony Xperia T. Back then I loved what sony was doing with the clean-ish UI and design. I supported Sony by later buying the Xperia Z, Z2 and Z3 but by then the experience remained largely unchanged. At that point I made the switch to the Google Nexus devices and now Pixels. I'm sad because I'm still very fond of my days with the Xperia phones. It just seemed like they never really moved forward the way some other manufacturers have.
Moved forward? You mean by removing headphone jacks and scars slots? Their UI is literally stock Android with some minimal additional features.
I honestly think Sony is ahead of the game with their camera philosophy. Personally, I'm getting tired of taking a picture and having it so over processed. Yes, it looks good for an immediate social media post, but it's so over sharpened and over saturated that it's nearly impossible to make it "your own" in post editing.
@@avenuePad He means fixing thermals, using the processor to the fullest. Making the basic camera useful....
Can confirm as a previous Xperia Z 2 owner, over heating has been an issue since the start of this product line. Now rocking the Z fold 4, I'm looking forward to seeing how Sony innovatives in the foldable space.
Imo Sony needs to master the candybar phone like Samsung did with the S22u before taking on next-gen designs.
Odd to say when every Sony product feels like a prototype. They should've been leading the charge in that area of the market tbh..
Or LG but yuh kno
overheating is bad enough as it is, but downgrading the optical zoom is just such a disappointment
Sony is the last true phone manufacturer left. Doesn't tie you down to an ecosystem, still includes headphone jack, micro SD card, notification light, and not associated with CCP. Just wish they'd tweak a few things.
SONY IS BEAUTY
You know what’s great about sony phones? Their dual front facing speaker! After pixel ditch that only gaming phones provide those great experience
I've always loved Sony's design language, and I love that the phones always have a clean interface, front-firing stereo speakers, a microSD card slot, a camera button and look symmetrical. But the availability (sadly, the brand shut down their factories in Brazil and now their phones and TVs are no longer available in my market), price and performance issues are always dealbreakers.
Nisu dostupni ni u Srbiji, ali zvanicno, ali se mogu kupiti u 2-3 prodavnice u Beigradu i Novom Sadu.
I've had the predecessor to this phone for about a year, the 5 III and I was gutted to see the overheating issue has not been solved. I love the camera setup and the dslr-like software provided (even if it does sacrifice the ability to take quick shots) but on a holiday, where it was admittedly hot, my III would completely close the camera app and not allow me to use it at all. This is a deal breaker on any smartphone in my opinion.
The Sony line isn’t made for the pixel crowd. They want to cater to those that are interested in photography and want to control their images. The pixel is made for the non photographers.
No one reviews gadgets as competently as you sir. Keep up the great work!
Kudos for keeping the headphone jack and sd card slot. Downgrading the overkill 4k display to FHD. I think im sold
I've been looking forward to this phone. My 5 ii has been great & didn't see the need to upgrade to the mark 3. I finally started to see how I use devices & activity look for those features & not let negatives on stuff I don't use deter me from wanting or liking a device. I'm definitely getting this in green! I don't record much video besides some fun short ones with my Lego Bricks and whatnot.
Was looking at this for an S22 replacement, the 5000mah battery, SD card slot and hp jack are very enticing. But the overheating camera app just ruins it 🙁
Sony is the only phone manufacturer which gives an option for expandable storage with an 8gen1 processor in the entire Android ecosystem / manufacturers... 👍👍👍
Other manufacturers already have 8+ gen 1. Hooray sony 👍
this is on 888 too.
headphone jack, sd card, and notification LED.... stuff that we took for granted.... i wish i had that phone
Everytime I see shots made on a sony phone I just can't leave unnoticed how natural they are. Yup that overprocessed google photos are greater almost at any comparison. But it is overprocessed flat and artificial. This video made me looking in the corner almost all the time, just because I wasn't sure if it was shot on a camera or a phone.
Same. I really noticed how unrealistic my iPhone 13 Pros photos look now. Especially in low light and I really don't like that tbh.
I'm a simple person. I see a new MrMobile video in my notifications, whatever it is: I open it and watch it because I know it's a great quality video.
I had an Xperia Z1 which overheated each time I used the camera and it’s disheartening to hear Sony still has phones overheating. I would love to try a Sony phone again, but that puts me right off!
My old xz had the same issue.
They stuck boring design from last more then 10 years...
Same for me. I had an Xperia Z2 and although I loved it and had it for about 6 years, it was practically impossible to use it outside during summer. Taking videos was not even a thing due to overheating (even in room temperature).
You’re the best phone reviewer ever Michael. No one goes to the extreme like you do too like traveling to different parts of the world just for reviews and I have to mention the awesome Star Trek piece’s. Keep it up enjoy your stuff and thanks for all your work
i love this phone simply bcoz of sd card slot and 3.5mm jack.
i wish samsung bring those to its all phones......specially sd card slot......removing sd card slot is a cash grab opportunity for all companies.
Thank you for the review. I have the 1iv and experienced the same over heating issue. However, an update was released recently that fixed it. Has Sony mentioned anything about providing a similar update for the 5iv?
Really? No more overhetaing on 1 mark 4? 🤔, please share.! Soc? Video in 4k 120fps? 🔋 Etc, thank you.
I've held on to my galaxy s10+ for a long time now. It's been a great phone, and I hate how every Samsung phone since has done away with micro SD support. I've been holding out waiting on someone to make a good phone with micro SD and a headphone jack. Sony has my attention. The dedicated camera button is awesome too, the "bixby" button on my s10+ is super annoying
@MrMobile thanks for giving the music creators a shout out in the comments. Class as usual sir.
Now that my Galaxy S+ is loosing battery life so much this looks like a good option if only because it still has an SD Card slot and a headphone jack. How do people use phones without those?
This isn’t an “everyone” phone and it’s not trying to be. I love it. Headphone jack, SD card, features for creators, not my dad.
True
His voice without processing is also so dope😮
indeed 😁
It is a sad state of affairs when the only way to get microSD slot on a flagship is to buy a Sony phone. Even against all shortcomings this phone makes the least compromises for me even though I don't like extreme tallness of the screen or the heat output or even lack of real night mode in camera.
Do u guys remember Apple telling they removed the headphone jack for maling their phones waterproof? 😂 And yet here's Sony giving us all. ❤
As someone with no interest in creating, little interest in even taking pictures, this phone looks pretty great. Phones that have both Qi charging and a headphone jack are in extremely short supply, and this phone has both without the astronomical price the 1 has.
This is why I have an xperia 5 II. Notification led, headphone jack, 120hz, not too big, SD card, great battery life and stereo speakers.
Most of these, no one else offers.
@@kirbyswarp
Same here.
Got the X5|2 a month ago been using LGv20 before then.
I haven't ran into any overheating issues.
Did find out if you want to take pictures quickly while in standby mode make sure to use the photo pro app as the app to open up with while holding down the camera button.
It literally opens the app in a second then you can take burst photos in another second.
2 seconds and your taking fast pictures.
Really useful.
oh no the bezels are too small!!! help. Im at my limits with an xz2 compact.
I'm happy the back doesnt appear to be glass though! And i love micro SD, front facing speakers, camera button and 3.5mm and notification led.
I do really wish there were more 1 handed phones. 5 inches tops in my book.
I wish Sony would make a desktop mode and Android ports of their desktop audio/video editing programs.
It'd be amazing to have a do-it-all device with the Xperia. It'd also get me off the Samsung train.
They also need to step up the long-term software support to at least 3 if not 4-5 years.
The overheating Sony Xperia phones has been going for YEARS. Idk what type of thermal they use into their phones but this is beyond ridiculous at this point
im not looking for a new camera smartphone or anything, but can't appreciate enough your super honest review, it's so useful for people who need to know if a thing is good before buying it. you're saving so much time and money, and time =D by doing what you do. thank you man!
I'm just as stubborn as Sony. I've come back to them time and time again, hoping heat issues have been fixed. But alas, always seems to be their downfall. Have had the z5, one mk1, one mk2 and currently have the 5 mk3. I do however still love having front facing speakers, with the added bonus of the jackplug (I don't use expanded storage, so that's not an issue). Been swapping from all kinds of brands the last 15 years, but somehow Sony gets me back 😅
Edit: forgot to mention the fingerprint reader location and camera button has also been a factor for me (this was before the other brands started with the inbuilt sensor in the screen) 😝
That screen is soooo beautifully clear!! 😳😳
It's impressive how dedicated Sony is to their "path of greatest resistance" approach to their phone division. Destroy their brand identity, do a piss-poor job with marketing, focus on niche features and hope that justifies their pricing.
They make so much more money from their other stuff, they don’t really need phone sales money.
Yet there is a very vocal Reddit dedicated to how "it is impossible to accept a bullet hole in a screen" and "pRo-pHoToGrApHeRs" who sure don't need no AI camera chops. And are rich enough to buy a 999 USD phone but too cheap to buy wireless buds/caps
@@emdezeta3010 there are just people who know what they want. They do not say that others phones are bad, like you do.
Not everyone likes over-processed photos and not everyone likes a hole in a screen for a no reason if the bottom and top edge can be 3mm.
The 5IV is about the same size of S22 yet it pack 1300 mAh bigger battery and jack. There is no excuses for Samsung. No to mention less than 3000 mAh batteries on Apple 13 (non pro, for size comparison).
@@jasiekformela4250 well since the 5IV is not out yet, you can also compare it to the upcoming S23 in january 2023 with snapdragon 8 gen 2 and android 13 out of the box, just 4 months later and Xperia has already 2 generations processors behind.
@@jasiekformela4250 No, they're actually fairly aggressive about in on average and actively bash Apple/Samsung/Google users.
Seriously considering this for my next phone. I don't do videos or gaming so I shouldn't have any overheating issues.
Hey Michael. A) do you think Sony can fix the heating issues in updates in the camera apps, optimising etc? And B) does the overheating still happen at 1080p? Thanks.
overheating is much less severe at 1080p on my Xperia 1 IV but it does happen...i run tpday's latest firmware update.
Sony has been unable to do so for the Xperia 1 Mark 4, so I wouldn't count on it.
@@JollyOldCanuck Apparently lots of owners of that phone on the reddit have attested that the phone's cooling system has gotten much better after some updates.
The heating problem is part of Qualcomm's (well actually Samsung's) fault. The efficiency of the 8 Gen 1 is actually worse than the 865 from 2 years ago, heck it's much closer to the 855 in terms of efficiency. When you factor in the 60% increase in the max power usage, well you get this and plus Sony doesn't throttle the chipset unlike of other companies like Samsung where the limit the chipset to 50% of its power unless you start running a benchmark
@@pixels_per_inch well i dont really care if it s Samsung fault, i wish Sony could have said Sorry Samsung we cannot put your junk into our 1 000 dollars + phone or delayed their products some more..
Same for selfie camera before, it was "bad" and it was a Samsung...why not put another sensor instead?
so what should the customer do? Especially when some other phones were released a few weeks after 1 IV with 8 + gen 1. But in day to day task except filming it s not an issue for me on Xperia 1IV and i dont game on it...but yeah it kinda sucks that the camera app suffer from that...even if situation has improved.
Mr mobile should have over 10M subscribers (IMO)... Man is good on reviews. Thanks BTW
I have Xperia 5 ii and it just superior phone light the display is great. Good price too.
Yes, Sony Xperia phones from the Z series onwards are known to overheat during video recordings, especially if you are recording on the highest framerates and resolutions, it will overheat in between 8 minutes to slightly more than 10 minutes of recording.
Its weird to me that people always say that, yet after owning the original Z, XZ1 compact and now the 5 II, i have yet to encounter that problem.
@@kiliandjfilms Same here, I even got the Xperia Z5 with the infamous Snapdragon 810 and even that never overheated on me, even under a hot sunny hot. Now I'm daily driving the 1 III and it has never overheated, even when recording for over 10 minutes.
They are literally doing things that we want MOST flagships to do, and I gotta find a way to support them
Shitty software support, using outdated SoCs (8+gen1>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>8gen1) and getting rid of the best gimmick of xperia 1 iv in the 5 iv
@@darthmortem585 Agree. I don't want a flagship that throttles in 3 minutes.
@@darthmortem585 Software support is much, much harder for a smaller company in this scene. The money apple or samsung spends to make one update benefits more than a hundred times the number of users that sony would. The cost to benefits ratios are nowhere near as good.
I would've liked the new chip too but you're assuming they didn't already order the chips for this phone based on their estimated sales from qualcomm ages ago. It's cheaper to order these things in bulk by ordering it with the chips they require for the 1IV.
@@etheratom6589 sony is far from a "small" company 😭
I agree with you on the 8gen1 bit. Altho it still stinks because 8gen1 is the notoriously bad chip because of throttling.
@@darthmortem585 Well yes but actually no on your first point. While Sony is a giant electronics and media conglomerate(Still much smaller than the likes of apple or Samsung), the different parts of a conglomerate are all essentially individual companies of their own. It's rarely a thing for specific parts of the company to make money and other parts then burn that money.
As such this relatively miniscule Sony mobile division is forced to maintain profitability on its own, something they have been struggling and barely succeeding to do the past few years since the new series of phones came out.
This is also the reason why they can't afford to price their phones like the Chinese companies that are honestly often burning money in the hopes to get their name out and then get profitability after that.
It looks like a great handset and the one thing keeping me from pulling the trigger in this or the 1 iV is that they won't get VoWiFi (WiFi Calling) in the USA, which is a dealbreaker for anyone who is inside brick/metal buildings, which I do all day for work. Thanks for the in-depth review!
I am so glad I saw this comment. I was very interested in this phone, but no Wi-Fi calling ruins it for me? Where did you learn this?
I'm curious if other review samples had similar overheating issues. Getting too hot within the first minute of filming sounds like a defective unit. Or maybe overly aggressive protection software? Yikes either way for Sony.
Waiting for your Galaxy Z Fold 4 review. The video will decide my purchase.
Sony is a needed competitor. The voiceover on the phones mic was amazing quality
I'm a big fan of the SD card support! I used to have the Sony Xperia 5 Compact and the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact, but moved on to my current Samsung S20 because of the more features and longer software support! Will have to see what if I join back to Sony Xperia in 2023 since Samsung removed the SD card support with the launch of the Samsung S21 :)
After the infamous crease crack developed on my Galaxy Flip 3, I thought I'd give an Xperia 5 III a go as there was a great deal on one at the time. Couldn't agree more about the mixed feelings with it. The screen is outstanding, the camera is fantastic (in the right conditions) and the battery life is dependable for sure. Those little bugs though are a nuisance. I've never had a phone be more hyperactive in my pocket (pulled it out of my pocket too many times to an accidental touch rejection message or to be told I tried to use the fingerprint sensor too many times) and it completely locked up twice in the first week of having it.
My experience EXACTLY with the 5iii. You nailed it. (Boy, I hate that fingerprint sensor bug!)
Fortunately they fixed it on the 5 IV. Hopefully it'll come as a software update on the 5 III and before
@@pixels_per_inch feels like it, the phone has been a lot more stable for a little while now which is good. Surprising how mixed the software was.
Sony Xperia has this thermal problem since their Z series. I cannot believe they still have that issue until today. This phone is not even a compact phone like their famous Z5 compact back in 2015 that also overheats.
They already managed to do it on their latest mirrorless cameras, but with this phone? I love Sony Xperia phones, they have a special place in my heart, especially their compact models. And I hope they get to solve their thermal problems soon. Sony, it's never wrong to look inside of other companies' phones too and figure out how they manage their thermals.
That's not true. I've Xperia 5 mark 11..mad xz3 before..no overheating issues
@@corklimerick1 I had a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact and it did not "overheat" even when I play high-demanding graphics with it like Asphalt 7 and Marvel: Future Fight in 2019. That was a Z series phone. Whenever I get a new phone, old or latest, I test them as a light user and heavy user. Sometimes, I'll push them to their limits, until they restart on their own.
I did not say all their smartphones overheated. I said "Sony Xperia has this thermal problem since their Z series".
Some of their Z & X series back then even have issues with touch digitizer being very sensitive to breaking and when it cracks just a little bit, touch digitizer is not responsive anymore. And despite all this issues, and they still have a special place in my heart.
I know they'll overcome these issues one day. They were the king of miniaturization and they'll always be. In 2019, I gave my Z5 Compact to my dad and he' been using it since late 2019 after I got the Z1 compact.
I've also owned a black Sony Ericsson W810i. God I miss that phone.
Sad these are still some of the only phones with headphone jacks and pass through power (that runs the phone from the charger and doesn't stress the battery)
Some reasons why I'm sticking with Sony
There are so many quality aspects to Sony Xperia smartphones:
1. Dedicated Shutter Button with half-press to focus like an actual camera!
2. Flat Display.
3. Taller aspect ratio to hide the hole punch n sensors whilst watching video - giving a clean content viewing experience.
4. Front firing stereo speakers.
5. Dedicated shooting grip with external monitor for content creators.
I mean this is a great phone with incredible promise! But as is the case with Sony always... falls short when it comes to a holistic User Experience. The shortfalls are too damning to ever be able to cop one of these! And just like Michael Fisher, I feel like the Dad who always roots for his son... only to be disappointed in the end. :(
Just when the video was going smooth, those horrible wallets came up again. Every youtuber.
The audio from the new fancy app is better than most youtubers achieve with expensive gear...
I prefer uploading the
videos normally than premiering them live
I’m curious what the difference would be in your opinion
@@timmymorales5204 i can skip the sponsor message. I'm already paying for UA-cam premium
Everyone complaining about the thermals when the Samsung S22 has the exact same problem. It's the crappy Qualcomm chipset manufactured by Samsung. It's no surprise the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ by TSMC is a lot better. At least Sony actually try to protect your phone from overheating.
Yup, I don't understand why Sony gets all the hate even though all the S22 series and even the Flip 4 with the 8+ heats to 70°C while recording a video and throttles the refresh to 30 Hz, all without a warning to the user.
I still LOVE the Xperia 1 ii that I'm typing this on, but none of the subsequent models have particularly made me want an upgrade, aside from maybe the telephoto camera.
I just hope that when this phone dies in a couple years, Sony might have worked some of the kinks out.
Same here, I'm hoping that the mark 6 will be the money phone that is priced appropriately
xperia 5ii is the perfect xperia 5 i think it doesn't overheat and does an impressive job at battery drain test in every video on youtube
Maybe the next one will be a.... 5 out of V 😂
Hah
Man how do I miss my XZ Premium. Lasted 3 brutal years after a 10ft drop. My iphone 13 pro lasted 6 months before it cracked… 😒 i will say, my XZ didn’t overheat like the rest.
Haha yep, Sony phones last long. Had a Samsung and the display killed itself right after a year with a green line of death.
Their support and updates are shocking. That's the main downside .
So close...... Come on Sony! If you're playing in this space with ONE device, you might as well play hard and just bring something out that will blow the competition away year after year! You have the capability, the technology and the IP after all.
I've never seen a video with so many punches at the product after its company spent all this money on the reviewer. you deserve a freaking award 🤣🤣. this review is almost rude. im so glad I sat through it.
it seems he was complaining on very fixable bugs/software problems.
HAHA so true
I think overheating is probably the biggest issue and that can’t be fixed with software. Sony will be the first to admit to that since they haven’t solved it for multiple generations now.
@@merpinallday they could reduce the clocks. It's also possible that it's happening only on Michael's Pre production model.
You're new to his Sony reviews?
@@TheGrizz485 these are the people who can make or break sales of a product, the last thing Sony should be doing is letting such a fundamental problem like overheating slip by especially when the phone’s most likely already in manufacturing by now.
you had my attention with notification light. You might call it obsolete, I call it necessary.
The $1600 for the Xperia 1 IV is a bit misleading. Disappointing UA-camrs do not talk about this, probably lack of research. Anyways, I bought mine off Amazon from NGP Store seller for just over $1000. The phone however is the EU/Asian model, XQ-CT72, which lacks 5G network bands. Do some research if you are interested, otherwise you will need to buy the US version which is $1600.
I get it, it takes time, but if you're going to put out a video about a product & talk about the price or anything regarding the price, you owe it to your viewers to do the research & find the deals that are available at launch at least.
he s talking about the soon to be released US model with 512GB, not the 256Gb for other countries.
@@JoeGillian0 I was also talking about the 512GB EU/Asian model. Again if the deal interests you, look it up. Only thing it lacks is a few 5G network bands, but for me on T-Mobile it works great.
@@aashilr LOl no thank you, i already have the 256GB Xperia 1 IV european model, i would have loved the 512GB but since it has only 1 physical sim (and esim), i can live with the microsd card in it. Also i dont want to put any more money in that phone that is far from being reliable (overheating that stops shooting or early recording)
The microphone at the end is amazing.
This phone seems pretty hype
this channel is so underrated , it deserve more followers tho
I own a S22, Xperia 5ii and now the 5iii as my daily driver. I can't believe how many reviewers nit pick every small features and overlook the many greats. I mean the S22, felt great without a case, but put on a case and it was just clunky and horrible to use. On top of that the S22 would overheat consistently when gaming or watching long movies and the battery life was terrible. Once 120hz was on and auto brightness enabled, the phone would barely last to the afternoon. The 5iii literally has no problems with battery issue and rarely overheats when using only a daily. This is with 120hz enabled and auto brightness on too. So for these "UA-camrs" who review these devices, maybe Sony is flocking to the wrong people. Every YT reviewer doesn't see the value in this type of phone because their so soiled with Apple and Samsung bells and whistles. Sony, if you're reading this, stop letting their reviewers stomp on your parade and let the actual loyalists test these phones on a daily.
So you want Sony and LG fan boys like Juan bagnell to review the phone and dismiss all of the downsides? The regular s22 may not be great, but the rest of the line up is.
@@jamescassar5348 do you own any current Xperia? I'm not talking about those from 2010, I mean the 1, 5, 10? If not, by your comment, you must be a SamBoy. Nothing wrong with buying what the the shepard tells you to buy.
@@petervang893 I'm a OnePlus 8 pro user and a tabs8 ultra as my main computer. I dislike the fact that Samsung doesn't give us chargers anymore but I do love their features and displays and cameras. I love alit of things Sony, but the price doesn't match thr end product imo
such a beautiful product with all the features for efficiency. but overheating in 2023 is a killer.
Basically any phone released in 2022 had overheating issues, except those that have a fan inside.
The more they release a new phone, the more disappointing it gets. The phone division definitely doesn't have that quality that Sony is known for.
True , still i wish they don't quit like LG did. Having competition even if it's bad is better than not having any
Garbage take. The opposite is true. It’s a purpose built phone that is improving.
@@PaulLembo you call it improving, I collect 1 steps forward two steps back with its hardware failures. that's not improving my friend. A lot of people are in denial about this phone. For the price they're asking, it's just absolutely not good enough.
@@PaulLembo what is its purpose supposed to be? They market it as some professional camera phone but it has a garbage camera. Makes 0 sense 😂
Best android phone for those liking good audio now that LG have left
Even the modest Xperia 10 IV overheats in Hotspot mode, in about 30 minutes if you transfer a few MB/s. Sony needs to learn thermal management.
