Valve lifter bucket measuring and replacing

- This is on a 2009 Pontiac Vibe, but it has the Toyota 2AZFE 2.4L motor in it. Bucket type lifters without shims.
Valve lifter math is harder than toilet paper math, just sayin'.
Excellent explanation of the bucket measuring process! I have a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, I have no clue as to why that didn’t use hydraulic lifters on my motor but I’ll be measuring this week and your explanation nails it! Thank you sir!👍😎👍
This video helped me out a lot. Thankyou.
Man i wish they teach this in hs math class am probably not try to pass but study hard fr fr
Hi I’m currently doing this job on 06 Prius, same bucket style. Did you find your valve clearances to small or too large. Mine had 11 that where under minimum. Some very tight. I looked for your follow up video but couldn’t find it. Cheers
Very informative. I used a digital caliper cause i couldn't wait nor afford a micrometer.
I have a 2AZFE and it ticks loudly at idle. I measured the clearance, few our of specs, but negligible. Wondering how much out of specs before it starts making noise?
For bucket 32 I'd expect the actual reading,.21XX, after years of wear to be less than what the sheet says, .2094. Did you perhaps not tighten the micrometer enough for the read? Can you explain please?
Your buckets don't use shims; do they?
hi i have the same issue with my 1zzfe engine, i was wondering what was the noise before you change the lifter and after changing how was the result? also when i go toyota do i tell just lifter number ?
Look up Elvrolet and VVT Vibe on youtube and you will be able to hear the motor noise. After completing the job there is still a little tick, but that may be due to the conversion sheet being off by toyota. I just took a video of it running today with the idea to post on this thread for you, but im not seeing the option.
@@elvrolet thank you for your reply , when you buy lifter do you just the number to toyota dealer ? Also. B4 was that sound very loud when you speed up ?
@@elvrolet pls post the video
Hey, all my lifters were fine They just got mixed around and I don’t know which goes where, What process should I go through to find out which bucket goes where.
Like what should I measure?
Did you measure any of them prior to taking them off the head? If you dont have a base line then you will have to put put them back, torque the cam, measure, then see what the variances are to figure out which bucket you need for each valve. It's going to suck.
@@elvrolet lol Yupp I’m in that process right now🤣 it’s not hard but it’s super tedious, it does suck😭
I am in the same boat right now!
What did you end up doing?
@@kesu90 you gonna have to look up the specifications for your cam buckets, put all the buckets in a random order, torque everything down, then use a feeler gauge to measure between the bucket and the cam. If it’s not the right, take the cams out and start switching buckets until they’re all within spec, it’s ridiculously tedious and time consuming dead ass took like 10+ hours to get them all right. It’s hard to explain but smeedia made a video explaining it much better than I do. Search up smeedia on YT and I think it was called measuring valve lash or something like that
I apologize if I sound stupid...to avoid going through the trouble of measuring to figure out which one need to be replaced can i just replace them all? And buy them to there proper spec.
Short answer, no. These are set to size by the gap between the cam lobe and the bucket. If you replace them with the wrong size it will lead to more problems. As the miles go up on your car, it wears the cam lobes which changes the original size. That's the long answer, but the work has to be done if you want a good runnging car when you're done. Good luck!
@@elvrolet that's out of my skull and time set I have...do u know how much a mechanic would charge for that job? And thank you for taking the time to answer my questions...
@@ata6602 I have no idea on what the billable hours are on that job at a shop. Im sure they charge around $150/hr.
Hi what happens if the clearance in these arent in spec?Do you lose compression. thank you
You could lose some compression as these are pressed down on to the valves that open and close in the cylinder. The biggest thing you will notice first would be the noise they make as they wear down and the cam lobes slap the valve buckets as the camshafts are turning. You would need to do a compression and leak down test to really know which item is at fault.
How often showld i do this work in my car , how this problem is diagnosed without puting in work
I wouldn't do this for fun. I was having to rebuild the motor so this was part of the process. You would have to get the bucket measurements while the head ia still together.
@@elvrolet if we change the tappers this is called valve clearance ?
Thank so much. All of Toyota mechanic must be know. How to get full manual pdf ? Thanks
I purchased a subscription for a month from Alldata
why don't we directly change the lifter instead of changing the bucket
The valves are under high compression and for the most part shouldn't change size. The valve buckets of this style are designed to be what you replace in case of being out of spec.
Do a video on what the small knob on the end of the micrometer is for. Get some training.
Was going to say something similar
2ZZ
Wait so could I just take all the worn buckets out, look inside and just order the same bucket or do I have to measure it and get a different bucket based on the wear to compensate for the wear on the camshaft lobe.
You really need to measure all of the clearances to get it back to factory spec. Otherwise you will end up with more of the same problems.
