- WHAT VALVE LIFTER NOISE SOUNDS LIKE. WHAT CAUSES VALVE LIFTERS NOISE
If you have valve lifters noise and you are trying to figure out why you have valve lifter noise and what causes it we will show you all that. We took this engine apart and we want to show you what valve lifters look like, and why valve lifters can be noise. There are 2 major kinds of valve lifters. Some valve lifters are hydraulic and self adjustable, the other kind is manual valve lifters. In this video we will demonstrated how they work and what causes valve lifter noise and how to fix it. Most of the times valve lifters will not be easy to remove and replace. In this video we will explain what components will need to be removed to get to the valve lifters.

fascinating vid on valve lifters - thanks
11 guys in the first minute…that came out wrong.
Since you never mentioned…how much would it cost for a job like this one? Btw 👍🏼like the vid
I like that you guys like to do a good thourough job on the vehices but I have a 2010 Dodge Avenger 2.5 L with lifter tick, car runs fine, good mpg, but don't the money for this and have heard a pint of atf left till oil change would help with cleaning engine for a while before upcoming oil change, could this help or hurt my engine
I had a game going for every time you said guys, I'd drink. But I was hammered by the end of the first 3 sentences, lol.
Thanks for the idea haha
Lmao that's funny. I think I tend to say so alot in my videos haha

My 2.3 Ford Focus ST got a lifter noise and the first video I click is someone working on the same engine.
Huge props and have my sub.
FOOL!
dude great video, was going nuts trying to diagnose the noise coming from the head of my engine...thats exactly what mine sounds like!!! thanks!!
I got the same Noise Im just glad its not rod nock. Rock nock doesnt go away I assumed it was my valves I tooky my car apart and sent the heads to be fixed and then replaced the pistons and cylinders to handle what I do with my car. Its cheaper when you know whats wrong with your car.
@@burntchickennugget191 should the piston and cylinder replaced?
@@burntchickennugget191 you replaced the cylinders ?? What 😂😂
So so so so useful! I never understood what this whole adjustment actually meant. Need to look up shimming still but at least I know what I'm looking at changing

What’s causes that noise ?
mines not so bad
You guys ROCK!. I have referenced many of your videos to help work on my car. Thank you for your very clear explanation and detailed description of the necessary steps. It is very appreciated.
My friend told me, Nice man you converted to diesel...
As veteran mechanic on noisy valve trains....Before you tearing your engine apart to do this..Make sure you have plenty of oil pressure.Low oil pressure will make valve train rattle. If your not sure if enough pressure then add 1 quart of auto trans fluid to your oil and drive the car for couple days to see if the problems goes away..If it dont then change the oil and put 1 grade thicker oil in it and still add 1 quart of auto trans fluid. Then drive for a couple days agian...Sometimes the oil pump and or lifters get a varnish in them and they stick and dont function properly making extra noise due to lack of oil flow. The auto trans fluid has additives in it that wash the varnish away from the parts.
what if my check engine light is on and is making this sound as well? The sound is the exact same as the video
wow I didn't realize their even WAS a fuel pump. so I got an o2 4.6 gt.. I recently had oil changed and literally ticking started after next 2-300 miles.. my gauge reads high pressure and dipstick is at max and looks almost like it just came out of a bottle.. should I try these same things? I can't do major work myself and Google says anywhere from 1000-2500 to fix lifters.. I got 2 lil boys im tryna raise on my own I NEED this car.. heck I only drive 10-15 miles a day maximum
thank you! solid advise. Im curious if Marvel Mystery Oil is similiar to transmission fluid......or works in the same way.
In my opinion Atf in oil is a 30yr old trick for 60yr old vehicles that got abused. Modern oil are so far superior to oil from even 1999
@@scottieallen3201 I wouldn't freak out. Does the noise speed up with rpm? Are you sure it's not a rock in your tire?
I think you guys are very informative. Keep up the good work!

Gotta remember to put the crankshaft at TDC & mark it on the camshaft and crankshaft before you pull it apart makes reassembling the engine a lot easier
its usually already marked but yes good practice
Super informative and actually used information!
thanks for video the sound made it super easy to compare to what I got going on!
Seeing the bad lifter would've been helpful. And is that the only part that causes the noise, or could the vavle be damaged also?
Thank you so much, i did a rebuild on a 2000 corolla and had this problem, i didnt know there were different thickness
Already solved?
Its a corolla, I dont even know tbh, its hard to adjust because you have to go to the junkyard to get new shims. I did my best but i cant tell if its gone or not, im done fqin with it.
@@virgilorlydelapena6942 Can you send me a contact off you? Facebook or Instagram or whattsap im learning with the buckets too
Thanks for sharing. I didn't understand fully why the noise was happening. Is it because the valve lifter was worn out, meaning the thickness of the metal is worn down which creates space for the tapping sound? I just could not see from the video how to tell if the valve lifter is the main or only source of the tapping. Comparing a new valve lifter to a worn out one that needs to be replaced would have been more helpful.
Thank you very much for your time and effort ...
Thanx
Thank you for creating these videos
Wow,a lot of work to make that adjustments!.
Good explanation.
Very informative thanks
Does a bad rocker arm or lifter cause engine knock as well as the ticking?
Undoubtedly
Thank you so much for this. I have a "spark" knocking v noise coming from my 2009 mitsubish lancer that is similar to this vehicle.
I have the exact same problem on my 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer i was wondering what the ticking noise was
This is exactly what sound my mercedes c300 is making, hopefully this is the issue🤞
RrrRrrRRealy helpful thanks :)
I'll finish the 1.6 yesterday Ford Fiesta and that's where I f***** up at, damn that noise
I just thought that's what all old Hondas and Acuras normally sound like lol
If you never adjust valves, yes
That’s crazy, well at least I know I bought a crap civic off someone sadly
My 4AGE 20valve has the same issue. Will sort it out over the weekend. Thanks mate
Already solved?
Hey bro I've got the same issue did it cost much being a 4age??
Thank you for your information
FINALLY I found the damn noise! My PT Cruiser started this about 4 months ago and it drives me crazy since once she's warm - it fades off.
Thank you.
I finally can explain the issue.
Cheers!
Great video. But, beside the noise, is there a problem with noisy lifter valves?
Depends by the noise, there are engine where a little noise Is normal but when the noise Is too much you are going to do damage, go to your mechanic and make It listen
Thanks, this was super informative.
One of my lifters on my accord has been knocking for the last 30k miles. Still going strong. Not even worth the repair. Car already has 190k on it.
*me hanging around car guys a year ago*- “sounds like your upper caliper isn’t connected to your exhaust”
*me after watching a year of car UA-cam videos*-“ yea no, that’s definitely your hydraulic lifters”
awesome post thanks mate.
Have you got a comparison video to show noise when tappers adjusted.
This is the video I was looking for - THANK YOU!!
Quick question - what's the moaning noise (at 1:19) that accompanies this lifter tick? A bad oil pump?? Got a 2017 Alfa Mito & mine is making that exact moaning sound + the ticking.
You never did say what needs to be done to fix the ticking noise. So do the valves need to be replaced or the valve bucket caps? Anybody know?
Just had all 16 lifters replaced. I was 25k over powertrain warranty and Toyota covered it 🥲🥲🥲🥲
I love your videos but I hate it when you make several different videos for the same part.
My truck just started making this noise.. it’s been 30° below for the last few months and it’s been fine up til now. It took like 30 minutes for it to go away yesterday. Started it up this morning & sounded fine initially. Then as I started driving I could hear the tapping again.
Any updates my golf mk4 just started doing this
Great video , just took mine to another garage as my first one could not work out why i was losing power ect ,so took it to a new garage and he picked it up straight away and turns out i need the camshaft replacing as its damaged where it should be curved but is now roundard off and also the tappings which i assume is the loud noise from the front and he advised me to get timing belt ect replaced as he needs to take off anyways but a full day job.
I have a 06 Accord I got for $800 at 200k something miles, put about 11k on it so far and it's had this similar knock since I bought it, but never affected anything so I never got it checked out. If this is how simple it is I'll definitely be getting it checked lol.
How much did it come out to?
parts are cheap... But Labor is expensive AF.
Hey bro how it going
Before an oil change sometimes?
I get a tick that I assumed was lifter issue , it occurs a low revs and hi revs any idea why there is a sweet spot where the sound goes away ...is the con rod bearing likely?
Just had Jaguar dealership tell me I need a new engine at £9000 due to this noise. Tfs xx
Yea Honestly I think the main reason was also to get your money but also because usually those cars dont have a huge aftermarket scene.
Sexy chic
Bitches be gullible.
My 2014 acura Mdx with 109,000 miles had this issue and I replaced thinking it was rod knock 😭 but I saved the engine to fix myself 🫡🫡
good to know mate
On a oil change putting heavier grade will help dissappear noise?
Thank you so much for valuable information. Can bad lifters cause a motor to smoke?
Bad valve guide seals and or rings
This was helpful
How serious of an issue is this? Does it need to be fixed asap?
Wonder how many non mechanics tried to tear their engine apart after watching this? Hilarious
Not after this video but yeah yeah I did a timing job right after i locked it up... i did good tho. Its been more than a year since then
I'm scared about all the left over pieces that I might not put back on lol
Need instructions to replace on 2008 Infinti G35
Someone on UA-cam said start engine riv up rpm to around 3000 and keep it there for few minutes, the ticking will go away, anyone try it?
Do they actually sell the replacements though?
What causes rattling noise at 3k rpm or higher but not heard below 3k rpm? My guess is the timing chains.
Though I don't know about a car but I do own a bike and meddle in their forum you might be right. It could likely be the timing chain and the timing chain tensioner or CCT cam chain tensioner is the issue. Pretty common for bikes to fail and show such symptom like you said. Changed mine from an auto to manual CCT and the slapping noise is gone. Downside is I gotta tension it every 10k km. For cars you can only get the automatic original.
@@kaiser98berlin that sucks my trucks engine does this that's gonna be a job to replace the tensioners.
@@chriss4365 hey I might be wrong. It could be valve lifters that need Valve clearance adjustment as shown in vid then changing your CCT alone won't do. The Best method is find a flat head screwdriver 🪛 put your ear on the handle end and place the flat end on various parts of your engine to find the source of sound; Play doctor. Trust me this will save you lots of headache and helped me during my motorcycle repair. It's easier for a car compared to a bike. If your Truck runs on rubber belt for timing then it's likely not the CCT or timing belt noise instead it squeaks from the worn bearing. If it runs on metal chain then its possible to be this issue, it resides inside the valve cover running along the cylinder blocks and for some the CCT can be shown outside the block. Probe those parts and sooner or later you can hear where the sound comes from.
@@kaiser98berlin I only hear it when driving and I hit it. Engine revs up and I hear the noise. I dont think my engine needs valve adjustment.
@@chriss4365 I see, have you tried reving it when stationary to hear if the sound is there?
Do you happen know what could indicate the similar knowcking sound on higher speeds? Till 30-35 mi/h the car runs very quietly. It is 2003 Chevy Cavalier. The knocking sound starts ~ 40 mi/h, increases to maximum at ~55 mi/h, then goes a bit down.
I'm not sure if my car is making this noise. Mine only does this at idle and sounds like a stopwatch not as loud either but its faster. It usually makes this noise on a cold start after it has been sitting. I've also been having an occasional starting issue. Could this sort of noise be anything else?
How old is the car? If you didn’t figure it out that sounds like a realllly bad fuel injector lol
Yep, that’s what mine sounds like, just a bit more severe lol
Sounds about right lol

I have a Hyundai Tucson with the same problem
My car sounds like that but is inconsistent and mostly after it's been driven and in deive. I'm getting it checked tomorrow to know for sure but do you think it could be a valve lifter?

good old valve adjustment after?
I have a 2015 mazda cx5 2.5 engine. I don't have caps, I have a rectangular-looking piece. How do I tell where the clicking is coming from?
Can this cause glittery metallic oil with hydraulic style?
Can head noise, say lifter chatter cause the engine to seize etc? I've had this chatter when shifting around 3K RPM for 2+ years and just turn my radio up. :)
Same bro
Honestly, valve lifter tick is usually not a major issue. It’s very common, even normal, for older engines to do this. Be diligent with your oil changes and make sure to take care of your engine. As long as it isn’t experiencing rod knock, the tick noise isn’t a huge issue as long as it isn’t excessive.
Thank you. Coincidentally I also have a Mazda with a light tick sound that happens occasionally. 2013 Mazdaspeed3. I hope this is what the problem is!
Can i install thicker valve lifter if the valve lash exceeds factory clearance?

Very useful guys thank you, it was helpful information. Are you guys in Russia?
Somewhere in Europe, not Russia
I saw California plates on a previous video
@@BitsOfInterest cool thanks I think though I hear a Russian or Ukrainian accent. I'm an American but I live over here in Russia so I hear that a lot from the people that are trying to speak English. I may be wrong it may be some other Eastern European. They may be immigrated to California

i've literally never heard an engine that DOESN'T have a ticking sound like that. how do you not go insane trying to track down every single tick and click? there are a million moving parts and any one of them could be clicking
exactly my frustration.
on hearing my car engine, ive had recommendations from a professional mechanic saying 'nothing wrong', a veteran private car trader saying 'get rid of it' to a old car guy saying 'worn tappets' (my car is over 150k) which led me to this vid.
opposite to all of this, ive heard advice online that my specific engine just has loud injectors.
im trying to learn, who do i learn from correctly? 💀
Edit:
I just saw another comment that reminded me.
Someone else said loose belt tensioner or worn belt. lmfao
Because you likely heard direct injections engines, they are loud and make this noise
@@ruutjormun2262start with adjusting valves or replacing/cleaning lifters if ur car has them, if that doesn’t work, then keep looking lol, if it’s a grind/whine it’s probably something rotating could be a bearing water pump etc, a ticking is something moving back and forth, so could be valves, valve guides lifters, maybe rocker arm assembly. I’ve had one car fixed completely and sounds perfect with 180k after taking apart and cleaning lifters, but my other car (a Honda🤦♂️) ticks persistently even after valve adjustment, since it has no lifters, but some people just say some engines are noisy, so it’s hard to know
Can you still drive as normal for short periods of time ??
Where are you located I need my 2007 ford expedition fix for lifters
But why do they need replacing? What's causing the noise? was one stuck?
Would have been helpful to record the engine sound after the repair.
What will happen when you mix your engine valves during overhaul?
you will have to measure and adjust the gap on every single one after you have re seated every one.
Did you measure compression in cylinders before changing lifters maybe? Can they cause leakage in cylinders? I have 2.2 ctdi Civic with noisy lifters, injectors are all good and engine does not consume too much oil, aprox. 1l per 10000km but my problem is bad compression on cylinders 2 (12 bar) i 3 ( 16bar), cylinder 1 has 24 bar and cylinder 2 has 22 bar.
What was the problem?
