DBL Debates: Tipping at Starbucks
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 вер 2024
- Starbucks is getting push-back from both customers and some employees over a new tipping policy that requires customers paying with debit or credit cards to select a tip amount in front of the barista.
It means that customers at the drive-thru make the selection while baristas hold the card machine up to their card window.
The panel debates the merits of tipping and the awkward interactions this policy creates.

I really HATE the new policy. I now avoid going to Starbucks because of this policy now.
Me too. I’m happy taking my $business elsewhere.
I just refuse to tip for fast food like service. This tipping culture creates an entitlement mentality for a fast food products and services.
That's why pull out my secondary I pull out my cash, they definitely can't ask me anything from there.
@@Havy9287 This works. Cash at Starbucks.
"Pay your workers more." Damn, finally someone who gets it. They hand you the damn iPad like Oliver Twist holding out a bowl as if we need to pay their salaries meanwhile Starbucks profits billions every year.
Agreed.
@@be_obee9024 Exactly, Starbucks is not locally owned, processing billions mentioned.
An issue of pay is taken directly to the employer not the customer.
Self preservation in a way by asking for tip (30 seconds of work doesn't guarantee tip, they like working there), the logic should then imply that Starbucks employees should begin tipping the ones that prepared the coffee beans that allow them to have a job in the sector.
Fun fact, in France they don't tip. And the workers are actually paid a fair wage. This is how most countries work. Our country is so money greedy that not only do you get overcharged, but now we need to pay the workers separately and up to 20% of what we're paying for goods and services. This is truly outrageous.
@@shipwreck8847 and this is why I've never been guilty tripped into more than I want.
No more tips for baristas. Problem solved!
Yeah 😎 I just don’t want to feel I’m getting pressure on tipping
I remember 15 yrs ago, I went to a starbucks and the barista knew my order and prepared it with all my customizations while she saw me waiting in line. THAT DESERVES A TIP
This obnoxious new tipping (scam) has pushed me over the edge; no more starbucks for me, I have other options.
My coffee is great at home, and I get the tip. I am buying a new coffee maker by tipping my own self.
Attagirl!!!
I wouldn't tip anyone for making a coffee.
It's like fast food service. Nobody tips at McDonalds or Taco Bell, or Subway. No way am I tipping at Starbucks.
I agree
I have stopped going because of this, its awkward and makes me feel pressured to do it.
I completely agree with you
I think it's time we all take a step back and just said no in general to tipping. This is how ridiculous it has gotten OK the 1st thing that you see when they hand you that machine is ENTER TIP AMT.
I went to a cafe a couple weeks back and I asked the lady behind the counter to hand me a cup so I could pour my coffee of course I had to pay for the coffee before and which isn't a problem, however when she handed me the cup and I paid the 1st thing that I got was enter tip amount. And of course this angered me and I told her directly I am not tipping you for handing me an empty cup, you would not believe the look that I got from her.. To add to that when I got my oil change just recently when I went to pay they actually had that same option. I paid a $110 for a synthetic oil change and the 1st thing that I got on that machine was entered tip amount 10% 20% 30%. The only thing I said to the guy behind the counter was I'm not tipping you and I'm not ever coming back her
e again end of story it's gotten out of hand.
That is a lot of money for an oil change. I pay half that amount. I agree though tipping for automotive service is outrageous.
Good for you! I'm going to do the same!
First world problem. I’m glad me and my family left the country for Europe many years ago. ✈️✈️
I agree with you on the tipping pandemic, You should learn how to change oil yourself, its simple and easy and you can save some money.
Good for you. This tipping sh!t has gotten way outta hand. I hate it. It makes the whole experience awkward and unpleasant. It really affects the value of your consumer experience.
Starbucks employees should not be tipped period.
Agreed.
I agree I think companies should pay their employees
I will never tip an employee for mixing a drink.
bartenders must love you
Unfortunately, Starbucks' insane tipping policy has inspired other coffee chains to do the same.
And I refuse to tip at Starbucks and any other similar establishments. Do you tip a McDonalds? Or Chipotle? Or Taco Bell? Starbucks is providing fast food service just like the rest of the fast food industry. Starbucks is already making 32 billion dollars annually,. So why should I further subsidize their cheap efforts to pay their employees more?
Starbucks is such a monopoly too where’s the other coffee shops ?
@@johnascialpi5247 They're pretty much going the way of the dodo bird, alas.
I stopped going to starbucks.
Starbucks employees are paid $15-29/hr depending on their seniority scale. They don’t need our tips because they are not wait staff serving us. Sorry!!
Well said!
In my area, InstaCart and Uber Eats automatically add on a 15-20% driver "tip" in addition to the app's regular fees. This generally adds up to about 35% of the total. You can't change the tip amount. I have no problem tipping these overworked, underpaid drivers, but I always thought tips were discretionary, not mandatory, and were supposed to be based on the quality of the service you receive.
If they're forcing the tip, it's not a tip. It's a TAX!!
that money is not even going to the driver, it's a scam
@@johnpaulyates1655 PREACH!
Exactly. I use such services sparingly. Good customer service was simply good business for return customers and part of the job. Now, a tip is the cost for a basic service that is part of cost already paid for the service.
They need stricter mandatory tipping rules for delivery drivers as “Tip and Ditching” is a real problem. The customer promised say a $7 dollar tip and the driver is relying on that but then the customer changes their tip to 0 or only a $1 after receiving their food when nothing was wrong with their order. Please treat delivery drivers better.
Sorry you're not getting a tip
I’m quitting Starbucks.
I think that's a great choice their coffee sucks anyways
You should try 2nd cup their coffee is better their goodies are less expensive and they don't have a tip option when they hand u that d*** machine
Nope. I am now required to wait behind mobile orders and the last time I was in the store, it was close to 20 minutes before I got the drink. That alone will cause me to find another coffee place. Now, they want me to tip them? It's not just Starbucks greed. It's everywhere. The cashiers will point out the tipping scale as if I can't read. A tipping scale that businesses created determining how much I am suppose to tip them. I now just stare them down.
I do not feel "awkward" for not throwing my hard earned money at someone who literally handed me a cup of coffee lol. Tip if you want, and tip how much you want.
Yep, and for that, I tip nothing. Do you tip a McDonalds or Chipotle or any other fast food establishment? If not, then why do so at Starbucks? I gladly do not tip at Starbucks.
Great and very timely topic. Tipping has gotten out of hand and where does it stop if not here and now. My Starbucks now has three places to tip:if you use any card including a gift card, at the counter and at the pick up. The tip jar if most often filled with $1 and even $5 well placed bills obviously placed there by the employee. This must STOP NOW. Tip jars are now everywhere and Costco and grocery stores frequently ask you to give to a charity often a "children's charity" - very questionable.
Let us all pledge now to stop tipping at counter service, coffee shops, take out's, bars. Most often these workers are getting better than impair than we imagine. The baristas at my Starbucks mostly drive somewhat expensive cars.
Let the word go forward, stop the "TIP CREEP."
I don't like that they know that you didn't leave a tip BEFORE they hand you your coffee. That's messed up.
Tips are a option from a customer, not a entitlement for a employee, if Starbucks employees don't like the amount of money they receive from their employer, get a higher paying job, and if Starbucks employees are forcing customers to give the employee a tip, that's no different than someone putting a knife to another person's throat and asking for their purse or wallet.
You are 100% right
Exactly!
Tipping is a compliment & choice of the customer. I don’t believe in tipping. Your working a job your getting paid too do. Talk to your employer if your not making enough. I don’t get tips & my job is so much harder & much more meaning full than putting coffee, FROM a machine into a cup. I don’t tip any where. A waitress chose to be in a job that is under paying them. It is not my responsibility to supplement their money.
In some countries it's actually offensive to tip. And really if it's an issue, make your own coffee.
I never tip counter workers. Full service waitstaff is it for me.
When I'm at a restaurant I tipped and I'm very generous at tipping my waiter or waitress at a restaurant, but as far as Starbucks no they are not a waiter or waitress who live off the tips they make very little in hourly wages. They literally make use a drink and hand it to you so I'm tipping you for gentle handoff I'm guessing.
Starbucks' annual revenue for 2022 was $32.25B. Tips are a wage subsidy to Starbucks and I am not doing it.
Well said!
CHARGE $1 for coffee and YES, you get a TIP. CHARGE $8 for coffee, and NO, NO TIP... that's PART of the $8 charge. the COST to MAKE a CUP of COFFEE is $0.50 for the coffee, sugar, cream, cup, lid, sleeve, and stir stick. Assuming 1 minute to make a cup means an employee earning $12/hour can make 60 cups of coffee in 1 hour, thus labor cost is $0.20. Equipment, building, profit and we'll toss in another $0.30. $1/cup of coffee! WTF is the OTHER $7 for the charge coming from?? the $20M you pay the ID10T CEO?
I fully agree!! Well said
Not a thing where i live. You are paid a living wage by your employer, if you don't like it you can find another job. Theres no expectation to tip where i live 😂
I don't tip on anything where people are already getting paid a full hourly wage. That's literally what tipping is supposed to be for: to make up for the fact that restaurant workers are paid sub-minimum wage. After that, it was for people who provide extra service. Tipping for counter service, to-go orders, and other positions where people are already getting paid for their jobs- and the only thing they're doing is their jobs, nothing more, is stupid. What NEEDS to happen is for people to put pressure on companies to pay their employees more. It's not our job to pay their workers for them. And if the service at a restaurant is bad, I don't tip at all.
why does anybody go to Starbucks in the first place?
Only loser companies ask for tips.
Folks, if you are tipping in 2023 at places where tipping was not a norm before, you are effectively helping the business owner/company generate MORE PROFIT FOR THEMSELEVS ON YOUR DIME as employers will use "tip" as a reason/excuse to give their employees a much smaller raise or defer a raise. I know of several business acquaintances who quietly admitted to me in person that what I said here is not totally untrue.
@donh8517: That' why so many go into the restaurant business. Owners always claim how low margins are, yet everyone jumps into the business as soon as they get some money. Why, because it's the only industry left where if you get into the right location at the right time, you can make lot of money and have the public pay the lions share of your employee salaries.
If you’re going to tip Starbucks employees, then why don’t you tip grocery store workers? Or deli workers? Or other fast food workers?
The trash man provides a service and comes to your home yet no one tips them. I am certainly not tipping Starbucks.
If you think that's bad, most self-serve frozen yogurt places literally ask you for a tip when paying. I was like tip for what? You get your own yogurt, your own cup, your own toppings, then walk it yourself to the cashier who then asks for a tip on the screen. I'm like no way! A lady tried to shame me once and I quickly put her in her place. I simply asked what did they actually do to deserve a tip?
I hear ya. I fully agree.
Pay your workers a living wage. Tipping shouldn't be legal.
No no noooooo…
i always pay cash to avoid the tipping tablet….
i always pay credit card to show them i'm not paying tip on purpose.
I don't do coffee, anyways...but I NEVER feel "awkward" about NOT tipping. I never tip, if I don't feel like it. I tip when I dine out, which, I rarely do.... All that other delivery and pickup stuff....NEVER!! Don't get mad at me...get mad at your employer for not paying you enough...
I stopped going Starbucks. It was expensive as it was already. Thanks, but no thanks.
I chose “ 0 “ 😂
an indirect way of beefing up Starucks P&L...for a publically traded company.
Subway does the same
Dominoes also when I order the Pizza, drive there to get it, but the beauty of all this is you can pay in full through the app at both Subway and Dominies, then you are just handed the pizza.Sooooo would Inhave been paying 20% for them to hit keys on register.
Fun fact, in France they don't tip. And the workers are actually paid a fair wage. This is how most countries work. Our country is so money greedy that not only do you get overcharged, but now we need to pay the workers separately and up to 20% of what we're paying for goods and services. This is truly outrageous.
I like tipping. I feel privileged to do so. I can afford to and I know these people have tough and sometimes gross jobs.
Just play their game and pay them THE EXACT AMOUNT IN $CASH, and no more.
Nope, I load my card on my phone and I don’t tip at Starbucks. Each drink cost $7 on average.
Tipping for pouring coffee in a cup.where is the service for the tips.not starbucks
Starbucks is already expensive as hell. What a joke.
have better idea go to college you wont need to ask for tips and you can gwt a better wage
Glad the only time I ever went into Starbucks was to use the rest room LOL
Found out the hard way (BAD case of the shakes) in July 1995 that I cannot drink regular coffee. I drink decaf sweetened with Irish Cream (prefer Carolan, but Bailey's will work). Can't think of anything better than sipping a nice hot cup on a cold winter morning, under a warm blanket, listening to Stingray Spa music.
I consider myself lucky that I have never encountered this. I would say to the person, "Tipping is voluntary, not mandatory." Of course, I would then watch as much of the "process" like a hawk as I could, lest an employee spit (or worse) in my purchase. If I even suspected, I would NEVER go back to that same place.
I stopped going to Starbucks all together since 2021.
I don't tip anymore at Starbucks. Starbucks should pay their workers. I used to tip now I'm put in and awkward situation to tip. I ask the server to set the register with no tip befire handing the machine over. Tap my card.
OR I avoid the whole thing and go to Tim Hortons and drop a donation to help kids go to camp. oR McDonald's, no pressure purchase..
Meanwhile Starbucks makes billions of dollars a year. Plenty enough to not only pay there workers a decent wage but to pay them higher than most jobs. Can’t believe they have the audacity to get there employees to have to ask for tips smh
Do I tip at Starbucks? ABSOLUTELY NOT. The drinks cost less than a dollar to make yet the menu says the average drink is $7. Why am I going to pay more than what the cost is? Starbucks is already significantly profiting. Tipping at Starbucks is like paying taxes on a product is already taxed. Starbucks is like a fast food restaurant. Do people tip at other fast food restaurants? Do people tip at McDonalds? Chipotle? Subway? They too prepare your food and arguably work harder and for less money. Why is Starbucks any different? I can see if a barista was like a waiter and waited on your table for an hour, filling your water glasses a couple times, checking on if you needed any thing else. But at Starbucks, they don't even bring you your drink. You have to walk up to the counter to get your items just like any other fast food restaurant. And It's tacky how they ask for a tip even through the drive thru. A fool and their money are soon departed.
Either you are begging or mugging but definitely it’s not gratuity. Check the dictionary again. Tips must be totally up to the customers freedom and shouldn’t disappoint you at all even if you don’t receive a single dollar for the entire year. If you receive a tip take it as a compliment not as pocket money.
Tipping should truly be for things where service varies. Like waiting a table at a restaurant, a haircut, and NURSING. I mean I’m a nurse and I’m not even sure I would accept money cause I’m just happy to help people but what service matters more than THAT? Especially with all the BS they go through with mean patients and doctors with god complexes lol.
100% Agree with a lady! Billionaire company can't increase raise to their employees? But milking it from struggling customers! 2022 starbucks made 21 Billion in profits!! I used to go to starbucks very often, now its super rare when I visit starbucks. Shultz should remove tipping if he wants his customers back
A tip is based on service. If I order a drink, and get it, I’m not getting personalize service.
And even if I did get personal service, companies need to pay their people and quit getting rich.
there is no standard; why percentages? it should be 1-3$ per item
No. I hate when they go, the computers going to ask you a question. Does anyone know if it shows in real time on their screen if I’m tipping nothing?
hm Why any workers need to donate money by from customers? simple pay cash
People DONT tip!!
I put No Tip on that damn machine! I don’t care who sees me or not.
I feel like the tipping culture in America is really ridicules and out of control. All of the places I order take out from have introduced this tipping option on their debit machines which I think is ridicules. I always give to 20% tip to my server when I go and eat in a restaurant, but when I am ordering take out and just picking up the food and eating it at home why should I give a tip? I just pay for the exact price of the food and go.
So don't tip. There's no law that requires you to do so. But then, some people never tip but are pleased to find something else in life to bitch about.
@@ragnarulrichson778 It's not "panhandling." Stop being so angry.
@@ragnarulrichson778 Then you definitely should not go to the same restaurant twice. That is, unless you want spit in your food.
@@ragnarulrichson778 Nope, guess again. That's not me, I've never worked in the service industry.
But you're so angry about something or other, it really doesn't matter. Have a great time eating your spit-burger.
Here in Brazil we just tip 10% when we're in fancy restaurants. UberEats, barber, nail, coffee shops, taxi, hotel and other services it is not common to do it.
Just stop giving tips and this conversation will come to an end.
It won't take long for that increase to drive customers away. I'm not a coffee guy, but there is no tipping at McDonald's. Folks might want to consider taking their business somewhere other than Starbucks.
I order a plain black hot coffee, pushing 1 button doesn’t deserve a tip for service.
I refuse to tip in North America for many reasons...
a) First, by tipping, restaurant owners can legally pay you pennies and get away with it, which means the entire system is corrupt.
b) Second, It makes no sense to put pressure on customers instead of fighting for a decent wage.
c) And third, tipping is a racist foundation of the american working class economy.
...
How is this different from tipping a bar tender?
Next thing is gas bumps are going to ask if you want to tip
I stopped going all together. That cup of coffee is not worth it.
Get ready for "extra sauce" if you don't tip. That's why I get my coffee from Panera. Self serve coffee.
They need to stop filling ice all the way to top...90% is ice only...if u take 3 or 4 sip off the coffee..it's all gone...
just say no ice and after you get it, ask for some ice
Tipping is over paying for you food.
Gee. Story turned into a soap box rant by one.
Easy fix. Make coffee at home
i just quit going to starbucks, it was easier
Just the tip sweetie
Why should I tip someone, before they give me a service.
ironically, tip is supposed to (in the past) be given prior to service for prompt service and/or special treatment. some say (which is a myth) that tip is an acronym for "to insure promptness". it's sort of like a bribe money to serve you before anybody else, including those who came before you. it had (in the past) nothing to do with the "quality" of service. so yeah, tip should be given prior, not after service IF given. as for me, i prefer not to tip at all.
If they can’t live at the wage, find a job that pays more?
Yea like it’s that fucking easy
I hate it
Bull
Do you tip your cook at Denny's?
2:06 "Tipping is wrong. Of course, personally, I'm a big tipper."
Simple, pay a living wage, include all taxes and fees in the price displayed like in Europe and Asia =No Stickershock👍. Besides tipping is rooted from the days of slavery & POS terminals tip% are calculated on your after tax bill (instead of pre-tax which is just wrong ) 💳💵💵🇨🇦🇺🇸🌎
Walmart should incorporate a tipping screen at their self-checkout kiosks.
Starbucks charges a lot to have the business model use tips
I don’t care, I don’t tip. I decline to the tipping.
had one cashier not even looking at me but jams the tip screen in my face, not goin back
Do NOT tip in the drive through.
lmao the longer the video went on, the more honest the people doing the poll were becoming
I don't tip at these places, nada!
Just say no to Starbucks.
The problem is if Starbucks and other companies pay their employees more that will cause them to raise prices. So, customers will still be siting more. But I also don’t think we should be tipping for just basic service.
Bru , RAISE prices at STARBUCKS?!?! There prices are already through the roof
I don't think the problem is tipping in general, more like how much you or they expect you to tip. I'm fine with 15% but when it gets higher than that I draw the line at 20% and even that only if the drink takes a long long time to make.
tipping in general IS the problem. the same arguments made for tipping can be applied to any profession. so why is it only the select few professions that gets a tip? the biggest problem is the law that allows restaurants to pay waiters less than the minimum wage.
@@joegame4576: EXACTLY, in 2023 if you can' afford to pay your workers, then you can't afford to run a business.
I think you should tip based on the complexity of the drink. If the drink you are getting takes many steps then you should tip accordingly. But if you're just getting a run of the mill iced coffee then no. It's no different than tipping at a bar for a complex cocktail. This way it's a skill based tip. Not just tipping for the sake of tipping without a rhythm or reason.
Here's what I tell them at the window - "So wow, you're actually asking for a tip for a product that's already ridiculously marked up 10,000%??? Here's my suggestion - tell you're greedy little franchise owner to pay you all more!!!"
As of yesterday, I see they got rid of the question screen whereby you have the option to say no and now have the screen with different tip percentages and no visible abiiity to say no - so you just hit the right arrow at the bottom and it takes you to the total. What a gd joke!
Also people need to stop donate money plz.... all those company..who gets free donate money..they get credit on taxes return...any time they ask for donation the they should give receipts for us to file in tax...
This is ridiculous. When you go into a McDonalds or go through their drive thru, do you tip THEM for the food you bought? Those people are working at these companies at an agreed wage or salary. They're being PAID to do THEIR job at that agreed wage. It's not my job to make up the money their not being paid by their billion dollar employer. Otherwise, the price on the menu is completely irrelevant.
I like how the title says "debates". Like this is a debate. Nobody is dumb enough to tip them. Maybe if the guy in this video had any sign of masculinity he wouldn't find a big deal out of hitting 0.
Why the f they have tip jar in front
