There used to be a movie theater near me that charged a bit more for tickets, but because of that, the prices on food and drinks were lower. $4 for popcorn instead of $8. They also didn't have any commercials before the trailers, just nice relaxing music, which was great. Unfortunately they closed down due to shutting down for almost a year during COVID. They simply weren't able to stay in business after that. RIP
Ways to hack the movie theater food prices -Hot Dogs (Go to 7 Eleven or Costco to grab $1 hot dog) -Soda (Go to your local store to buy a $1.99 24 ounce) -Candy (go to your local store to buy a 1.99 candy) Note :bring your date or wife with you because you’ll need them to sneak the snacks in her large purse. Movie theaters can’t check a woman’s purse.
What I learned from this is • Bring your own food • Wear sunglasses to resist flashy marketing • Bring earmuffs to take a 15-20 minute nap before the movie starts • Get a membership only if you frequent movies often, and only use it for its discounts not points • Don’t download their apps

@@nikko6883 theres a trick to that too just grab an empty bucket of popcorn out of the trash and give it to the concession stand they'll give you a brand new bucket and there you got your free popcorn
The theatre I used to work at had rent of like five thousand dollars every couple of weeks. That was after they negotiated a discount. Also, the utility (air, water, electric) costs to keep the building running was crazy. For example, each projector bulb was almost a thousand dollars and that needed replacing every 800 hours or so with the projectors running 12 hours or more some days. Plus you have staffing costs and food costs for ordering and damaged foods thrown away. Not to mention the studios charge sending you the movie and showing it. There were some weeks we would be in the red as far as profit after everything. So yes it costs a lot for concessions, but a lot goes on behind the scenes that you purchase helps.
Yup and people don't seem to realize when you purchase a ticket $12 or whatever to see a film it's doesn't mean the theater just made $12 dollars most of that money goes to the movie studio that's why theaters charge a higher price for snacks.
In my country (Brazil) By law they can't stop you from bringing your own popcorn (Some Movie theaters have rules like: No Hamburgers/Fried food; No Ice cream/Gum, But you can always take your own Soda and Popcorn
The irony of concessions is that popcorn started as street food that vendors sold to patrons who were waiting in line to see the movies and theatres at that time didn’t allow snacks.
I used to work at a movie theatre, I’ve literally let a family walk in with an entire little caesars pizza box. We don’t care, as long as they don’t have a gun they’re chillin.
I think as time passes, theatre workers care less and less about people "sneaking" food in. I think it's cuz the workers are young people who also understand and empathize that the food at theaters are extremely overpriced. Just last week my group of 10 people brought in taco bell and kfc buckets lmao.
well imagine for a moment that you own the theater, it's 2024, day 1 you get to run Ghostbusters frozen empire, every showing is pretty full, you have taken in a lot of money at the box office, life is good, until Sony comes the next day and takes 90% of it, that's why concessions are expensive, not on that 10 years ago you were just FORCED to drop 80K per screen for digital projection equipment to keep the doors open and keep showing moves, yes concessions are expensive, but the greed starts at the top with the movie companies, at least it did when I worked at a theater, 1996 was the year I started at a drive in as a projectionist apprentice, and we sold out on night one, life was good, until Universal showed up on Saturday, and robbed the box office with no weapon, yeah I bet that still goes on to this day
It's all good though, cuz movie theatres are all owned by big corp themselves too. It's big companies with big companies screwing over the consumers like you are me. I could imagine it, but I don't empathize lol. @@w8kdzradio113

The main theater chain in my area (Marcus Theaters) offers some nice discount deals of $5 Tuesdays and $6 student Thursdays for admissions and on those days they offer a free small popcorn which I take advantage of. They also send out coupons for food at times. I remember one time they opened up a new theater nearby and they sent everyone in my apartment a sheet of coupons and many people just threw them away in the trash nearby the mailbox so I grabbed a bunch of them and was able to get a bunch of free drinks, burgers and popcorn using those. I even got lucky with one of the free popcorn coupons and one of the workers gave me a plastic reusable refillable popcorn bucket instead of the paper non-refillable one lol.
My state in India implemented a rule allowing moviegoers to bring in their own foodstuffs inside theatres. This is a step in the right direction, but now people started bringing curries and rice. Like a full fledged meal 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
The theater I worked at had dollar shows when the normal ticket prices were about 5-6 bucks. They literally made nothing on the ticket sale, but more than made up with it on concessions. They concessions were much higher than the nicer full priced theaters, and as I recall, the cost on a large popcorn or drink (which then, were about $5 and $3, respectively) was about 10 cents, including the product and the container. When I was scheduled to be an usher or ticket taker for the night, as long as you made some attempt to hide the fact that you were sneaking in food, I didn't care- the theater was making plenty of money on the people who bought stuff. One young girl walked past me without making an attempt to hide food and I had to stop her, because I could get in trouble for letting her in with obvious food. She literally started crying saying she didn't have money to buy anything and was too embarrassed to ask her friends who had already gone in the theater. I told her to go outside, to conceal it and not carry it through the lobby in plain sight, and I would let her in without issue. I will never forget the goofy smile she had on her face as she came back in and walked by me, like the two of us just pulled off the heist of the century.

I love free refills on sodas and buying candy and icees at movies!!! Going to the movies is fun in the summer time when you're in state or out of state!!! Sometimes I buy nachos and Hotdogs if I have extra money!!! In my state of Georgia we got the Georgia theater company and their similar to Regal and AMC but alot smaller and I remember we used to have them cheap $1.00 and $0.99 theaters in Warner Robins before they all shut down in 2014!!! Them $1.00 and $0.99 were for movies that if you missed it in the Big theater or wanted to see it again you would see the movie that wanted to see but just for cheap money or if you didn't want to go to big money theater just to go to a cheap movie to spend less to go the movie you wanted to see for less. I was into movies for a long time and boy it was a trip!!!
this makes me wanna go see a movie now lmao I always sneak in candy etc but i can't turn down the popcorn and soda...the portions are worth it and the taste of movie theater snacks just hits different
"No outside food is allowed" lmao yeah right. Every theater I've been to I've easily sneaked in a good amount of snacks and sometimes even vodka if it's a Saturday night
It's genius how they offer free refills but no one actually gets them because the film is on and after the film you will forget about the refill its genius
usually the movies i watch are boring or too scary for my older brothers, so they dont even watch but they go along for the snacks. Whenever they need to refill for the whole family, they'll do it no problem.
I used to work in a cinema, and I can confirm that most staff don’t really care if you bring your own snacks. There may occasionally be someone who has an issue with it but they’re few and far between. It’s also true that distributors of movies keep most of the profit, on ticket sales, which is why cinema food/drink is more expensive. But I never blamed anyone for choosing not to buy snacks from the cinema, it’s a lot to pay for low quality stuff.
Concessions are why movie theatres make sales as ticket sales go to who made the movie and to pay the actors. I never complain as your keeping a movie theatre in business even if its a small owned movie theatre.
@Dave Smith It’s not really a top-secret marketing strategy. Most of the initial profits go back to the distributors, that’s common knowledge, and often referred to as “the box office.” For cinemas to stay open, the money has to come from somewhere - and that’s the profit of food and drinks.
@JPPSrules facts. I don’t really care about the price of stuff, because it makes my experience more enjoyable. I get a tea and popcorn every single time.
My cousin said her friend's family went to the movies one time and snuck in soup. She said they were all pouring and passing bowls and pouring soup back and fourth at the movies.
I'm actually amazed by how calculated everything is. It feels like everything is there designed and carefully planned for a purpose. It's similar to casino.
I used to work at a cinema in the UK. Had a father with large family, irate with the cost of the tickets and food, and took it out on me, a minimum wage drone. After months of this, I had enough, and decided to talk back to this particular man. I didn't know the actual facts, but made some numbers up to sound plausible. Note: Words are not verbatim, but it's close enough to what I said; it was almost 20 years ago... Me: Well, first of all, you chose to come here for entertainment. You could go somewhere else. Also, we (the cinema) don't get much money. A high percentage of your money goes to the film studios, you know, the company who spends MILLIONS on making the film in the first place. We only get 20%, if we're lucky. Let's see here, your screening has sold 40 tickets so far today. That means we (the cinema) will earn approximately £45. That's barely enough to cover for the electricity, rent and our wages. That's why the food is expensive, which is also a choice. You choose to buy it or not. Customer was stunned silent, wasn't expecting a well thought-out answer to a nameless face behind the box office. He walked away quietly.
but good work you weren't too far off with that, but sometimes perception is the reality for outsiders but those of us that worked or still work at these places know the score, the owner of the drive in I worked at from 1996 to 1999 shared with me my first summer that information, because I asked, :well we sold out last night, on a film that got panned by the local reviewer, so we did pretty good, he said no, Universal did pretty good, and then shared the economics with me a first year employee, I took it as a second job so I wasn't trying to live off it, but I had a new respect for the snack bar, and after I left I stayed a customer for a long time even until today and I always make sure to support the snack bar, and their prices aren't really that bad as compared to the walk in theaters, and they weren't when I worked there either
Those of you who worked in the theaters, remember that 50% of the Box Office was about average. I recall some Disney films claiming 80% or more of the Box Office. Then we relied entirely on concession sales. Then the "4-wall deals" when a company, usually the distributor would pay a flat fee for use of the theater and our staff. They took 100% of the Box Office. Sometimes we were allowed concession sales, sometimes not. This video brought back a bazillion memories from selling popcorn at the Hollywood Pussycat theater to managing a theater in East Los Angeles. lotta memories. Thank you.
I'm glad this video is actually explaining why and not bashing it blindly. Yes, if you're going to make a disgusting mess and leave your trash everywhere I am going to care very much. If you sneak in a small candy and take the packaging with you, no I do not, although buying something helps keep us alive, especially independents. We only have scheduled time to clean whatever normal popcorn candy or soda between movie turnarounds. If an employee cannot clean it entirely within that time, it's their fault and hours or employees may be cut to prioritize theater gains. So if you're going to sneak something, don't make it obvious, don't leave it everywhere, DO NOT throw your leftover popcorn on the ground and just don't be a disgusting piece of garbage. Take it out with you to THE GARBAGE CANS you have to walk past before you get in the theater. And do not bring full meals or food in there, it makes it smell gross. Like they said, if you're too cheap or actually need to save money, just eat beforehand. Think about someone else for once, like the employees that have to put up with awful behavior on a near daily basis.

One of the reasons theaters charge so much is because all the ticket proceeds for a movie during the first three weeks or so all go to the studio. After that then the theater gets to see some of the revenue due to ticket sales.
My dad literally had me sneaking food in at the theater since I was 8, as who would question a little girl carrying a bag a grown woman would carry? My ex was a manager at a movie theater for years and he told me this however the movie theaters want movies to stay in their theater as long as possible because they make more money on them. The other way that if the movie is a highly promoted movie (big expected blockbuster) they actually make very little money in the first few weeks. (This was in the 90’s when streaming wasn’t an option so things might be different now)

@@kellykadson1174 From what I know they just split it. Honestly I didn't even know the theatre got so much. Theatres wouldn't risk losing big name movies just for a relatively small one time payout.
Last time I read something about this the theaters didnt get 50%. It was listed as way less, and the opening weekend box office was 100% for the studio. Then as weeks go by the theater percentage would grow. I don't think the 50/50 split happens very often. I mean, the studio spends a lot of money and resources to make and promote the movie and then profits the same as the theater? Does not seem like a good deal to studios.

kauigirl808 they can’t do that. That’s pretty illegal

Technically they didn't go in my bag but they make us open our bags. They probably don't do that anymore. I never went back to that location.
RIP
Ways to hack the movie theater food prices
-Hot Dogs (Go to 7 Eleven or Costco to grab $1 hot dog)
-Soda (Go to your local store to buy a $1.99 24 ounce)
-Candy (go to your local store to buy a 1.99 candy)
Note :bring your date or wife with you because you’ll need them to sneak the snacks in her large purse. Movie theaters can’t check a woman’s purse.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

I used to work in a cinema, and I can confirm that most staff don’t really care if you bring your own snacks. There may occasionally be someone who has an issue with it but they’re few and far between. But I never blamed anyone for choosing not to buy snacks from the cinema, it’s a lot to pay for low quality stuff.
Hmm nice dude

Concessions are why movie theatres make sales as ticket sales go to who made the movie and to pay the actors. I never complain as your keeping a movie theatre in business even if its a small owned movie theatre.
@Dave Smith It’s not really a top-secret marketing strategy. Most of the initial profits go back to the distributors, that’s common knowledge, and often referred to as “the box office.” For cinemas to stay open, the money has to come from somewhere - and that’s the profit of food and drinks.

20% yeah that's if they feel generous, when I worked at a theater it was never less than 90% that they took during the first week of run
but good work you weren't too far off with that, but sometimes perception is the reality for outsiders but those of us that worked or still work at these places know the score, the owner of the drive in I worked at from 1996 to 1999 shared with me my first summer that information, because I asked, :well we sold out last night, on a film that got panned by the local reviewer, so we did pretty good, he said no, Universal did pretty good, and then shared the economics with me a first year employee, I took it as a second job so I wasn't trying to live off it, but I had a new respect for the snack bar, and after I left I stayed a customer for a long time even until today and I always make sure to support the snack bar, and their prices aren't really that bad as compared to the walk in theaters, and they weren't when I worked there either

You're not supposed to, but literally every other person does this and the theater employee's don't want to get bitched at constantly by customers so they just allow it most of the time.
BTS! Got7 Twice Blckpink Kpop!! I don’t sneak in food because I feel bad doing it because if I want my local theater so stay open I should buy concessions
I work at a theater currently and honestly we don't care if you bring in outside food or drink, we are more worried about someone trying to sneak in a gun in this day in age!
@@GhostBritt Which theater chain do you work for?

Theres a dollar tree right in front of mine but my theater is cheap enough not to go to dollar tree.

my grandma has smuggled FULL sandwiches into theaters. no need to overpay.
That's nothing, i smuggled two apples in the theatre, dressed like a lady and apples in my chest!!! I went extreme because i did not like junk food!!! (note: theatre managers, this is just a joke, don't come to me)

i am not kidding i once literally hid a cadbury in my underwear lol
I have sneaked donuts

I worked at a theatre in Canada 20 years ago and a large popcorn was $6 back then !

Who says I buy candy at the theater, theres a dollar store conviniently across the parking lot from the theater

My ex was a manager at a movie theater for years and he told me this however the movie theaters want movies to stay in their theater as long as possible because they make more money on them. The other way that if the movie is a highly promoted movie (big expected blockbuster) they actually make very little money in the first few weeks. (This was in the 90’s when streaming wasn’t an option so things might be different now)
It isn't sneaky. It's overt. That's why I sneak in my own own treats. But I still buy popcorn.

Haven’t been to a movie theatre in over 20 years. Already knew back then what this video is showing now.
Money is made from overpriced junk food, not the movie ticket itself.
Thank you detective Sherlock
If you had bothered to watch the video, you would know this is exactly what they said MULTIPLE times.
Thanks for stating what for video was about like I am a numb-minded imbecile! We have a genius on our hands here!

It's about $10 where I live to see a movie. Nothing too outrageous about that.

"Theatres only make 50% of the revenue, studios make the bulk of the money"
The studios only make 50% too then. Talk about trying to be sneaky. You make it sound worse than it is.
Rhinopocalypes I might be wrong but doesn't studios sell the movie to the theater first? And maybe then get the extra 50%? In my country things are a bit different
@@kellykadson1174
From what I know they just split it. Honestly I didn't even know the theatre got so much. Theatres wouldn't risk losing big name movies just for a relatively small one time payout.
Rhinopocalypes yeah me neither I thought studios/distributors sell the movie to the theater and they keep all the profit
You're all human cattle. Consumer slaves nothing more nothing less
I just wait a couple of months and watch the movie on Amazon Prime for a few bucks, on my 80" TV with surround sound. Can pause the movie whenever needed, can eat whatever I want, and it's in the comfort of my own home.
My local movie theatre has a grocery store and a McDonalds directly next door. And they expect people not to sneak food in lol
In my city, the ticket is around $2, and a package of small popcorn and small cold drink is also around $2. So, less then $5 is enough to enjoy the movie inside.
Wow how is it cheaper than my city for a man ate it is five bucks and I think that is flex. Also I just sneak food in so no expenses except movie Tiket and popcorn
Our low priced movie theater closed a few years ago. :(
Maybe that's because you live outside the US where everything is much cheaper
@@hermannthefisherman2960 that’s assumptive and not even true. A lot of other countries, including mine, have the same thing going on at movie theatres. Also, different areas in the US will have different prices.

that kinda reminds of a tiny 4 screen theater where i live that showed movies that had been out for about 3 weeks at a really low price of $3, now the place is a night Club, but i doubt its still around any more and closed yet again Due to COVID.
Yea I know how you feel. My local one in my hometown closed down. We had tickets for $3.99 and $5 buck Tuesdays. I miss it.I and my friends seen every Marvel at my hometown one & could sneak food in all the time.
Before my local theater was sold to Reagal (or however you spell it) they used to have time warp Tuesday where a movie was like 2 bucks.
The local theatre in my town had to raise prices after they were allowed to open again due to closing for almost a year. Sucks because the prices for tickets and food were extremely cheap :(
Son: Daddy, can we get some popcorn and choclate.
Me: No. Ive got drinks and stuff in my bag already.
i believe my first theater movie was Rio. Never bought snacks from the theater, only tickets. I’ve been bringing my own food into the theaters for 10 years now
