    I had the great experience of working with Dick Ritger a Au coaching camps. Dick demonstrated how to bowl with very little thumb use, how to use the fingers more effectively and how to increase revs Watching Norm Duke I see he uses the same system Dick showed me. Its simple and very effective.

    5 different refits in the last 18 months. Finally getting close, so this interests me to see how you are experimenting with pitches. I used to have a much more stretched span in the 1970s. When I came back for a year in 2000 my PSO really shortened things up. Too much pressure on my middle finger with plenty of bruising under the nail. I no longer use finger grips except on one ball I drilled where I made my span longer on the middle finger. It's the most comfortable of the three variations I am presently working with. The other two are causing callousing and pressure on the knuckle above my nail now but the bruising is pretty much gone. Thing is, I finally have a good thumb situation. I used to have so much trouble with it back in the early days when we were all stretching spans to ridiculous lengths in those old yellow dots. Now, almost no callous anywhere on my thumb.

      Sounds like you have figured most of it out. Thumb is the most important - fingers are easier to experiment with and fix. Good luck with the rest of your adjustments

    Thx for sharing, Feel has got to be huge especially for one handed players, working close with a good ball driller can only be a plus especially if they know how you throw it. It cant hurt to experiment especially if you find an improvement.

    Love what you did with your grip. Have you tried vacu grip for fingers? I feel with vacu grip pitch is not to much of a issue. You would still have to trim the insert cause it will stick out of the ball. Good luck this coming bowling season. Hope to see more of you on tv.

    • @ThomasLarsenBowling

      I use a 63/64 for my fingers. I have tried vacu, but feel like I have no grip or feel at all. I like the compromise of the just slightly bigger hole.
      And thanks! I hope you see me on TV a lot 🙂

    I'm going to have a couple of new balls drilled later this week, so this video is perfect timing. Thanks for sharing your grip and fit issues. I've been saying my span feels too short. That makes my whole hand feel uncomfortable at the least to painful at worst. My ring finger has already gotten caught and twisted at the first joint, so there's definitely something wrong. I hope I can explain this well enough or that they'll see the problem(s) when I release the ball. Wish me luck :/

    Thomas,
    You looked a little grabby when you transitioned to the Altered, however, I liked the roll the best out of all three. It looked more forward and the transition through the pocket was nice and strong. FWIW I’m not crazy about the look you were getting out of the Nova. That fit change seemed to give you a bit more axis rotation and less tilt, so when the ball transitioned around the corner it seemed to be a bit jumpy. I could see that if it’s coming off of your ring finger too fast.
    Still smooth as ever at the release point though. I love that wrist snap you get.

    Hello Thomas, appreciate the video explaining this thought process for your fit issues. Could you please explain the effect different lateral pitches have in the fingers? I have been utilizing the sarge Easter grip for the past year due to tendon issues in the ring but recently have had strain at my knuckle/right side of the ring finger. I have been using 1/2 ⬅️ and 0 ➡️ for the laterals and both fingers have 3/4 reverse. Recently experimented with 1/8 ⬅️ and 5/8 ➡️ which initially felt better but caused me to not get around the ball whatsoever. Then proceeded to throw the original pitches which had better release but am still concerned about the minion strain. Would be interested in your thoughts on this issue. Thanks

    • @ThomasLarsenBowling
      @ThomasLarsenBowling Рік тому

      Maybe you can do something in between 1/2 and 0 and 1/8 and 5/8?
      To me the laterals don't change my feel a whole lot, but I know they affect roll.
      However I changed my laterals due to too much stress on one of my fingers, so I would look more at the laterals to avoid discomfort.

      @@ThomasLarsenBowling If you leave about 1/16" of the low side up when you glue, once it dries you can then push most of the hi side down flush. Add glue 1st then push down. when You push hi side all down it makes the 1/16" on the low side go flush. Hole will need to be about 2" deep

    • @ThomasLarsenBowling

      Yeah, it works pretty well with less pitches, but mine sit probably about 3/8" above the ball

      When you cut the tops off, use some rubbing alcohol/solvent on them and it'll clean them up a bit- smooth out some of the uneveness.

    The laterals in your fingers are opposite of a traditional right handed fit. With your hand position at the bottom, I think you would like 0 in the middle and 3/4 right in the ring. or maybe 1/8 left and 5/8 right.

    Do a follow up I crack my middle finger nail down the middle and it bruises under nail, boy that hurts. Reverse pitch has help a little bit, trying to roll the ball off my fingers now. I thought I was the only person with finger nail problem.

    I have never had a problem with my fingers or hand. My biggest problem now is losing the ball on the downswing. My thumb pitch is zero reverse and lateral. Should I add an 1/8 to the thumb toward the middle of the grip and go with 1/8 or 1/4 left lateral? I know I would have to shorten the span to compensate for the extra 1/8 toward the center of my grip.

    With that much reverse in the fingers, the ball must feel like it's flying off your hand

    • @ThomasLarsenBowling
      @ThomasLarsenBowling Рік тому +1

      Not really. I generally roll it more than "hit it" with my fingers, so for me the only thing it changes is that it doesn't feel like my nails are being smashed by a hammer at release 🤣

  • @WarArms4Life
    @WarArms4Life Рік тому +1

    Ahh slight observation here but, you are torquing the crap out of your fingers by being all over the side of the ball. Have you ever considered revamping your swing? There's more than one way to get a better feel and it starts with a decent fit... But also a fundamental swing.

    • @ThomasLarsenBowling
      @ThomasLarsenBowling Рік тому

      True my swing probably causes some of the issues. And I actually have changed a few things with it recently.
      However it is also some of my uniqueness and some of what creates the things that I can set myself apart with.
      So yes some of the swing parts can be changed slightly, but changing the entire swing would also take away some of the best parts of my game I feel

    • @WarArms4Life
      @WarArms4Life Рік тому +1

      @@ThomasLarsenBowling I understand. This is a big part of the "modern" game in bowling. Many people have a 'style' and then try to incorporate certain fundamentals to improve their game. Not saying it's wrong but as someone who was coached into bowling, I believe fundamentals should always be first, then let your style come with development.
      Speaking generally here and I don't mean to attack you. Just thoughts on the matter. Very clean release, but the angle at which the fingers come through the ball seem to be of issue for sure. Best of luck, I'll be watching your updates 👍🏼

    Why dont pros cut the bottom of the grip before setting it? It always looks like an angry rat gnawed the grips down😂 It seems like it would be uncomfortable while also being displeasing to the eye. Serious question though. Is there a reason?
