    This is seriously the first video that explains this, thank you so much. As a beginner, I had my thumb hole expanded because it grabbed too much, and now it is huge. I actually got carpal tunnel because I had to squeeze so much to keep it from dropping. 4 pieces of tape later and carpal tunnel is gone, but I just got a new ball with a thumb hole that's fit better and now it's grabbing so hard its not coming off my hand. Turns out it's because I'm coming in over the top it looks like. Great tip, thanks.

    If the ball falls off your hand when it’s by your side or you feel like it will when you relax your hand you need to change your fit

    Dude I never knew about "oval thumb hole". I'm looking at my hand and I can't un-see it now. THIS IS THE GREATEST TIP. my coach years ago would always say pendulum swing, but i never could focus on my swing since my thumb was getting raw from gripping.

    I've always had to have a death grip on the ball to hold it. I thought that was normal. I went to a different pro shop, and the amount of measurements that were taken this time were way more in depth. In fact the pro told me I have a strange hand or thumb that makes the drilling a challenge. The new ball has given me the consistency I've been looking for. Thanks for the knowledge.

    I’ve watched hundreds of videos including others from JR, but this one finally opened my eyes on what I should look for when getting my balls drilled. I’m also now looking for my thumb to parallel to the lane for proper release. I had three balls freshly drilled and I couldn’t figure out why on some it felt like it was going to fall off and on others my thumb would get stuck. I know I have to work on my fit with a PSO as well as my wrist strength to make sure I can keep my thumb parallel. Thank you JR

    Great tip! I recently changed to fingertip grip. My ball has been sticking to my hand badly. And sometimes it would just fall right off my hand so I had a tendency to have an excessive grip. So today I had my pro shop guy take a look at my thumb hole and he changed the pitch and made the hole more oval. Now I feel a huge difference in my grip and I don’t feel like I have to put so much effort into my swing now.

    I had my own ball when I was a kid, from a hav-a-ball league. Since then I’ve used lane/house balls - and rarely bowled (only a few times in 30 years). Until a couple weeks ago, when I got a good ball and had it correctly fit. Unfortunately I did not know how to throw it. My first game with it was a 203, but I nearly killed the thumb tendons doing that. So last night I spent ensuring that my grip and startup are correct. They go together. I’m not really gripping the ball anymore; it is just sort of sitting in my hand as gravity does its job. What grip I’m using comes at the base of the thumb. And with the fingertips set up correctly, the thumb is now sliding out naturally at the bottom of the throw.

    I'm still throwing my first ball (with the thumbhole drilled round by my pro shop when I bought it). It's been sometimes too loose in the past, but once I used the right tape in the right places, it fits perfectly. I'm exploring getting a second ball soon, and my pro shop guy definitely thinks I need an oval thumbhole for a better fit this time. I agree.

    Thanks for this video! Never assume we know this stuff! I fight the local pro shop here where I bowl, (Illinois - grew up in Milford many, many moons ago!) to always have my thumb hole drilled oversized when I buy a new ball. The young guns in there behind the counter are always telling me “how it should be”. But, I have ALWAYS had a problem early and late in the season because of temperature, humidity, etc. getting my thumb out. I just use thick tape for fit and feel, then replace it with a thinner piece in about 1/2 way through each week. In the dead of winter, same piece all night is fine. However, after it hangs up once, I’m too damn conscious of it for the rest of the night. Nobody has ever told me about keeping my thumb parallel to the ground on release. Lord knows I have asked everyone in the league who is really good and claims to “know the game”. I have picked all their brains on release positions.
    My finger tips usually get sore by nights end and I think,(now that I watched this video) it’s because I’m so worried about getting it off my hand sometimes, I’m NOT getting my thumb parallel to the ground, (actually leaving it short of that) and there’s too much weight on my fingers at release. I’m thinking if I keep my thumb straight up and down, (or at least close to it) it would somewhat come off / fall off easier. You just demonstrated that’s it’s the opposite! Anxious to now try that mental note in warmups on Monday Night and see how it feels. Good stuff! Love your content!

    Finally got all my balls to fit this way, last night. Had some new grips installed because I started taping my fingers, but none of the grips of the same size matched/ felt the same, and none of the thumb holes felt the same either, even though they were all drilled by the same PSO. Mostly my fault because I asked him to make things over size a little to allow room for swell and that I would fine tune things as I went. But long story short, they all feel the same now and only fall off my fingers at the bottom of the swing and I don't have to grab or squeeze at all. Still getting used to it after squeezing for nearly 20 years. 166, 208, 258 was the series, and usually it is best game first then going down in the gutter from there. Excited for doubles tournament tomorrow, see if I can bang out 4 games above 200.
    Aside from fit, best improvement was bowling one frame at a time, never looking at the score. someone will tell you when its the tenth. Score only matters after the last ball rolls down the lane.

    @hellgiver21 2 роки тому +1

    I've always known my balls never fit properly. I have to squeeze the heck out of it to keep it on my hand. It will fall off immediately if I do this.
    I learned to bowl using my dad's equipment so I've always had to squeeze the heck out of it since his fingers/thumb/hands were much bigger than mine at the time. I knew this wasn't right but I learned to be a really good bowler even with this awful technique.
    Now, I still squeeze the hell out of it, still have the same very short backswing with a bent elbow that I learned to bowl with so the ball wouldn't just fly off my hand and I still have the same problem, even with being fitted for my own equipment now. I also have major arthritis in my bowling fingers, probably from doing it wrong for so many years.
    I can put a foam work glove on (thin glove) and cram my hand into the ball and it will stay on when I hang it by my side. I could also take a vertical backswing if I wanted to while wearing this glove.
    Maybe all this means is I just need smaller finger/thumb holes? Maybe I need to try tape? I've never had problems blistering, even with my extreme squeeze-grip, so I've never even tried bowling tape. I don't think my hand will survive for too long if I keep this up.
