    I decided to go with forward pitch on my thumbhole several years ago. Used a plastic ball to test this out and went through a few different pitches before the PSO and I agreed that 3/8" was a pretty good place to be with my thumb. Previously I would drop my ball and have a very inconsistent release and I would squeeze the ball on every shot. As I was getting older I wanted to find a way to reduce my grip pressure and get a few more revs. By going with the forward pitch thumb hole I accomplished both. I don't drop the ball and now have a very comfortable grip. Of course, I began to play with tape techniques in the hole and on the back of my thumb for protection. I use a tiered tape technique at the front of the hole and use some narrowly cut pieces of tape on the back of the hole where my thumb nail rests without having to bend my thumb back to feel the back of the hole. My nail rests on the narrow layer of tape near the bottom of the hole. Works for me... :) Good luck.

      Thank you for your input! I hope that you found this video very useful, as it sounds like you’ve done some good experiments in the past in regards to your own fit. I absolutely agree with what you found in doing so, and I wish you the best of luck going forward!

    Good food for thought Bro.
    I've heard about changing one's thumb pitch before but only in terms of trying to get out of the ball faster, so this was some good insight.

    I agree with what you have said about forward a reverse pitches. I would like to see something on the left and right pitches.

    • @FloppyPENGuinn
      @FloppyPENGuinn  2 роки тому

      Great point! The left and right pitches are very dependent on one’s hand. The reason I didn’t want to do much on those is because of that, as my hand isn’t very flexible in the right spots for left/right pitch. Although, I recently did try 1/16 left and it helped alleviate a little pressure on the inside of my thumb, small changes left/right shouldn’t make a big difference on timing at the moment of release.

      @@FloppyPENGuinn Do you think that's something I should try? I feel like I grip the ball too much and I get pain on the inside of my thumb where the thumb connects to the palm (if that makes sense).

    • @FloppyPENGuinn
      @FloppyPENGuinn  2 роки тому +1

      @@cbrdealer Yes, I do! I would try adding forward pitch. Probably 1/8” or even 3/16” more than you currently have, based on how bad the pain is and/or how hard you feel you have to grip the ball to hold on.

    What is the maximum amount of pitch either direction in an interchangeable thumb insert? Does it depend on your thumb size? The smaller your thumb the more amount of pitch direction you can obtain? Thanks

    • @FloppyPENGuinn
      @FloppyPENGuinn  2 роки тому

      Great question. There is a maximum, although I have drilled a customer’s ball with 3/4” reverse pitch and it’s been alright since the pitch was also in the ball. The only thing is that the pitch must be in the ball. His thumb was very large, although smaller thumbs are typically easier to do more pitch in.

    Having trouble with the hole size with my thumb but was suggested it better to have bigger than to small...

    • @FloppyPENGuinn
      @FloppyPENGuinn  3 роки тому

      With the right pitch, a thumb at a smaller size can be helpful. It also has a lot to do with being comfortable while bowling. The ball should cling to your hand, not your hand to the ball (to prevent squeezing it and missing your target).

    • @jeremiegrund
      @jeremiegrund 3 роки тому

      I’m not sure I would agree with too big. A thumb too big you are going to squeeze a ton to keep it on your hand and that’s going to cause all kinds of thumb issues.

      @@jeremiegrund Omg yes. I've messed up my thumb knuckle so bad and it still hurts since last year.... I can't figure out the right thumb size, and when i think i have the right thumb size and fit- I can't get any pro shop to remake that exact same size.
      Also i wanna test out some pitches too, which could factor in the thumb issues. Forward never worked for me. Im at a zero, now i might try for a reverse today... Idk... It's a fking struggle

    • @jeremiegrund
      @jeremiegrund 3 роки тому

      @@Kris-WT the trick is letting the ball roll off your hand, most people when they first put their hand in the ball on the table they say it’s too tight but if you have them stand with the ball in their hand normally and have them drop the ball into your hand that is the true test. As for forward and reverse pitch the general rule of thumb is that it should be based on your span and thumb flexibility. With the idea being the larger your span the more reverse pitch you will need. Innovative has a great chart showing the recommendations

    Just saw this video after searching for thumb pitch. I have interchangeable thumbs. If you want to change the pitch, the PSO can do it through the thumb itself and not have to change the whole setup in the ball?

    • @FloppyPENGuinn
      @FloppyPENGuinn  Рік тому +2

      Yes, that is true. I drill my Turbo SwitchGrip outer sleeves at 0 pitch, which makes it very easy to drill the pitch into the inner thumb, but even if there’s pitch in the outer it’s possible, as long as the two aren’t drastically different so you don’t drill through the slug

    I have problem usually towards the end of the league with top inside part of my thumb towards the center of grip starts to hurt. Is that to do with thumb pitch or something else?

    • @FloppyPENGuinn
      @FloppyPENGuinn  3 роки тому

      Good question. Actually, that can have something to do with thumb pitch. If you are possibly a little too far reverse (maybe just 1/16 too far), it can cause you to slightly squeeze and you may experience rubbing/pain in that spot. Also, before changing pitch make sure that the hole is properly sanded and rounded off at the top so you know it isn't just digging into your skin on that spot.

    I would suggest that going or coming your pitches on the thumb is fruitless in that the release is not clean off the hand. The result of a clean release shows in the ball getting to the lane smoothly without bouncing. The pitch change yes will give later or earlier timing release but a clean release is the goal. Your hips could be lower to the lane at release by deeper knee bend or bending at waist more.
