My grandfather used to have a flat cemented area next to the garage in the back yard where my grandmother used to hang the laundry to dry. When he was planning a fishing trip, he would lay wide planks of wood down on the cement and prop them up off the cement with small stones or other tiny chunks of wood to make a crevasse just high enough for crickets to fit under. The cement gained heat all day, he would lay the planks out in the early evening. During the night, crickets would move in and go under the planks of wood to keep warm and to be protected from prey. Early in the morning he would go outside with his cricket cage, flip the boards over and quickly grab them and toss them in the cage. It wasn't easy because they would try to jump away of course. Sometimes he would have me grab them. If he had a small portable vacuum like that, he would have been in heaven!
So, try the wooden planks on a warm surface over night.

i''m pushing 80 and all those years as a kid spent the whole days catching crickets to go fishing with dad after he came home from work.and thought i had seen it all, till now. Wish i had one of those then , but then again barely had electricity. Ben Franklin and I went to school together.

I struggle a lot catching crickets barehand because they are so quick and bouncy. But now I bought a cheap one from Amazon and works quite well! I also use it to catch ladybugs for my garden and it works great!
Thank you so much for sharing this tip, I really appreciate it 😄👍🏻.

Best technique I’ve seen so far. So many others using plastic bottle traps catching one cricket all night… Gonna need more than that. I did see one where a couple guys sat out at night with a bright light shining on a white sheet, that brought them in in droves. Might try pairing that with your vacuum technique.
