There are 2 reasons why an alternator can drain the battery when the engine is not running.
Most alternators have a trigger wire that wakes up the alternator regulator and field. If this trigger wire is tied to battery power, the field is active at all times and will drain the battery. This is about a 2 to 3 amp draw.
The test is to unplug the alternator and make sure the trigger wire is off when the ignition is off. Note, some alternators have a sensing wire leading to the battery that is always hot. This is to provide proper charging voltage reference.
The other possibility is a shorted alternator diode ( actual shorted not the generic " it is shorted " applied to all electrical problems. ) Power from the battery will flow through the stator windings draining the battery. The test for this is to measure current on the alternator output with a clamp on amperage meter or disconnect the output wire and see if the load drops.
Another quick test ( with the key and engine off ) for either of these issues is to take a piece of metal and see it it sticks to the alternator shaft or rear of alternator.. Current flowing through the alternator will generate a magnetic field.

Marty some of us "old timers" that enjoy this channel were born in the 70s and did in fact watch and understand the gremlin reference. They multiplied if touched by water and changed from the mogwai into gremlins if they ate after midnight, BOOM! (que too sexy music)

Honestly you guys are legendary. I absolutely love what you guys do and I have been watching from the beginning. I have a 2008 Golf GTI and a 2005.5 Audi S4 and it's largely because of things I've seen on your epic journeys. I loved the rusted and rat rod Golf and then Super Gramps. Then the Stagea blew me away. I had to have my own wagon and that started my search for my Audi. It's an Avant and a manual which is SUPER hard to find in the states. You guys are truly an inspiration and I've got nothing but mad love for you both and everyone else who makes the show happen. Me and my friends watch religiously and you never disappoint.

Regarding AWD, turbo, manual, relatively new (weeeell, 10+ years but you know) car: Volvo V70R AWD! Heaps of problems for free, probably really rare in Aus, but let's not sweat the small stuff! You get a huuuuge trunk so you can haul around all the extra bits you need. And then some!

Awww... Don't say nobody's watched 2Sexy, Marty. 2Sexy is a real car, that real viewers can really afford and can really do their own mods to in real life- which has been Mighty Car Mods' schtick from day one. The 240Z is a fantasy car, and it was fun to watch the build, but almost nobody can afford to build their own 240Z, so don't play into Moog's I'm-a-famous-UA-camr-and-I-can-do-elite-cars-now schtick. Plus, if you're into fantasy builds, there are better channels out there (no offense)- I believe there's another UA-camr who's putting the motor from a Tesla P100D into a 240Z right now; so basically building a Bugatti-beater.
Once you go elite, there's no end to the cash expeditures. Stay cheap and stay real, Mighty Car Mods!
Well they are probably basing that off of metrics -- I personally wasn't a big fan of the ego build just because I am not a fan of Evo's however I appreciated some of the lessons learned (like the effect of de capping injectors)

I guess it depends on where you live, but building a RB-240z would take $4-5k(usd) where I'm at... as long as you do all your own work and actually spend the time to source out the parts! That's no fantasy build! It's a reality build that's nice AF!!!

Failed diode in the alternator. Diodes work like a one way valve and control the charge and stop it from earthing out. Just swap the alternator with a functional one. Job done
likely, as they break down PIV goes way up, becomes like a short you cant find!

No problem dudes. Had the same issue myself, spent £800 on a new PCM as we believed it to be the smart charge for Ford electronics but then opened up the alternator and all three diodes had blown. Went to the junkers and picked up a second hand alternator and Bob's your uncle, fanny's your aunt and it was fixed

But I didn't forget the fact that 2sexy was chopping Marty's stock Evo X on the track, and that was when 2sexy still has the 4g15. I’m building a Mk3 Golf with a Mk4 engine, with a set of rods you can go to 350/400hp no problems, obviously a larger turbo and the usual supporting mods are needed but they are fairly reliable at high power of built properly👍
Hey guys! Bit of a bugger about the 240's current drain issue, but i did see it coming!
If the current drain is approx 4amp, you have blown the diodes in the alternator most likely due to starting the car with boost pack and running it without a battery that was able to accept the charge that the alternator was producing, (was likely the battery was either heavily sulfated or had failed open circuit)
To check it just place an amp meter on the alt end b+ conn with everything else off. Should show approx the same 3-4amp drain seen back at the battery leads too.
Through a new alternator on it and avoid jump starting and disconnecting the boost pack if the battery isnt accepting charge (checked with an inductive dc amp meter around neg cable) or a good battery isnt connected in the circuit.

MK7 GTI owner here. Everything you said about the golf is true. You can make them fast, it's VERY expensive, and then they blow up. But they are a very fun car. I have no illusions about my car being faster than much but I love it the same
Typical VAG car, unfortunately - a very small but high end aftermarket that charges you your left nut plus your future 2nd unborn child(which, per the fine print, you MUST conceive within the allotted time frame) for a cold air intake, which of course requires the removal of the entire front subframe to install, which will inevitably lead to your engine blowing in extraordinarily anticlimactic fashion so you don't even get a good story out of it at least.
I, like every other late '80s/early '90s kid raised by the internet, would trade 3/4 of my family for a nicely built 400wHP Audi B5 S4 - but I'll be damned if I'm actually going to buy, modify, and maintain one of those motherfuckers with my own two hands, time, and money!
Nah, I'll stick to building this eventual sub-10 second Mustang drag car that my nephew just recently picked up for his first major project(that's the goal anyway, we're talking probably 5, 6, 7 years from now, something like that, with a built engine and likely a nice single turbo system - one step at a time) - I'm sure it'll be MUCH cheaper than that moderately powered dream B5 S4 LOL
Nick Kiedaisch $1000 for 100 horse? Pretty cheap.... I've never found tuning vws to be expensive, especially when the internals and injectors are being proven to be fine at 400 whp.
