Methylcobalamin vs Cyanocobalamin: Which version of B12 is best?

  • Methylcobalamin vs cyanocobalamin: which one should you take? Both of these are versions of vitamin B12 but differ dramatically in how they are processed by your body and/or utilized. Even though they both contain vitamin B12 they are NOT created equal with one being significantly better than the other.
But first, why would you even worry about using a B12 supplement? Because B12 deficiency is so common! It is one of the most common nutrient deficiencies out there and it leads to symptoms such as weight gain, depression, and fatigue.
Because it's so common, B12 is often added to various supplements to help improve those symptoms. Unfortunately, many manufacturers of B12 supplements use the wrong form of B12 which can cause issues.
Methylcobalamin vs cyanocobalamin: What's the difference?
While both of these contain vitamin B12 the difference between these two is in what the B12 is bound to. In the case of cyanocobalamin, the B12 is bound to Cyanide.
This cyanide must be eliminated and detoxed out of the body.
Even though it doesn't cause damage to your body it's still something that should be considered. Lastly, cyanocobalamin is not naturally found in nature unlike methylcobalamin which means it's synthetic and manmade.
Methylcobalamin, on the other hand, is basically the exact opposite. Methylcobalamin is the form of B12 found in food and occurs naturally. In addition, it doesn't require detoxification of cyanide and comes in its pre-activated and pre-methylated form which means that it is easier for the body to use.
For these reasons, it's ideal to use methylcobalamin.
Is cyanocobalamin harmful because it contains cyanide. Studies have shown that it doesn't cause harm and the amount of Cyanide contained is so small as to not cause toxicity. Having said that, it doesn't sit well with me using a product that contains a potentially deadly product so I prefer to avoid it.
You also should be aware that there are several ways to put B12 into your body. These include: B12 injections, sublingual B12, and oral B12 capsules/tablets.
You may need to play around with what works best for you, but I have found that B12 shots tend to be the best as they bypass absorption in the gut and get straight into your cells.

"But it has cyanide in it!!"
ok? loads of foods have cyanide in them. Have you ever eaten almonds? It's not enough to be harmful to you. And remember that ur body converts cyano to methyl.
And just because cyano is man-made does not mean it is bad for you. Lots of medicine is man-made, yet beneficial for you.

No 2 people are alike. But with that being said would you ever share your regime? Such as what you take but detailed info such as 1 shot of B12 per week of x amount. What benefits you notice immediately. Side effects of anything you have used etc. I feel you already make such EASY to digest understandable educational vids and this may take them even to the next level. Also please do vids on Liothyronine, how to read labs when on it or what to look for, when to take of getting labs done, what to do when t4 and TSH plummet.

Dr. Westine Childs, as we know Cyanocobalamin is metabolized into two active forms:
adenosylcobalamin in the mitochondria and methylcobalamin in the cytosol. If one has B12 deficiency, then taking only the active form of B12 supplement (Methylcobalamine), would leave the body without adenosylcobalamin which is needed for energy production? Can you explain please? Thank you!

I did some internet research when I started B-12 and not knowing the difference bought the Cyano version. I decided to get the Methyl a week later and have trusted it to help ever since...about 5 years now. I take 2000 per day. What is a correct dosage for a 295 lb human version of the Goodyear Blimp? Great video, I have a friend whose wife just started taking Cyano injections. He stubbornly refuses to talk to his doctor about switching, So, in the mere chance that he may look nto my Facebook posts, I planted the link to this video on my page. Thanks a lot for clarifying via a well explained video. Oh, my friend's wife has an extremely bad heart condition so I worried about the 1000 mcg doses he must give her, soon to be monthly.

I appreciate you explaining the cyano. I worked in the semiconductor manufacturing field . One of the my projects was to plate electroless gold on on certain components the electroless gold solution was suspended in a cyninde solution. I've wondered if that contributed to not having a positive reaction when receiving cyano injections where the methyl injections I would get a positive reaction most always within 10 minutes. I have PA and my father also had PA.

More likely you have genetics which don't handle cyanocobalamin well. It's not something our bodys has evolved to deal with.
The amount of cyano isn't likely to be enough to do any harm. But it's unneccesary, of course.
But methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin , and the hydroxycobalamin forms are what our bodies know to handle, so stay with those.
The research tells us that any of the three natural forms will work. They all do the job about the same, except for details in absorbtion, which we can only guess about.

I assume you know who Dr. Greger is. Here's his take on B-12: "For adults under age 65, the easiest way to get B12 is to take at least one 2,000 mcg supplement each week or a daily dose of 50 mcg. Note that these doses are specific to cyanocobalamin, the preferred supplemental form of vitamin B12, as there is insufficient evidence to support the efficacy of the other forms, like methylcobalamin."

This is not accurate. Our body need both methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. So if you only take methylcobalamin you can risk being deficient in Adenosylcobalamin. Whereas the synthetic cyanocobalamin will convert into these two forms more effectively.

    Is methylcobalamin unstable?
At pH 3, methylcobalamin was the most unstable showing 79% degradation loss, which was down to 12% after sorbitol was added (p < 0.05). The losses of cyanocobalamin at pH 3 and pH 9 (~15%) were prevented by adding sorbitol. Addition of sorbitol to hydroxocobalamin at pH 3 and pH 9 reduced the loss by only 6%.

I recently threw away my poo poo gummies and got me some Metilcobalamina!!! Wasn't cheap, but I'm feces-free!!! Funny, because I went to a market where all they had was the poop gummies, and then I went to a health food store ....they only sold *ONE* type of B12 supplement, with *METILCOBALAMINA!!!* that's it!!!

    • @larsnystrom6698
      @larsnystrom6698 5 місяців тому

The first 2 ug of a dose is actively absorbed. The rest of the dose by much less effective diffusion.
Therefore, a very high dose of 500 or even 1000 ug might be needed to get more than that.
About 7 ug absorbed would be good, perhaps optimal. The RDA of 2.4 ug is low.
I would suggest supplementing with, let's say 25 ug three times a day. Because the uptake of higher doses seems to be severely reduced.
But that's just my idea. Most just take a very high dose once a day.
Methylcobalamin would work well.My guess is that 500 ug once a day would be pretty good for most people.
But intestinal problems can kill absorbtion! In that case, see a doctor.
I'm not a doctor. I've just researched this for my own purpose, finding out what's optimal for me.
