- Hello Everyone!
This week has been quite the challenge as paint doesn't come off of such a porous surface such as limestone easily. So i had quite the struggle getting it off. Some came willingly. Some not so much. Working so much on the front of the building also got me thinking about the colors that it would be finished in at the end of the restoration. SoIi made a little mock up to help visualize what it might look like when complete. Enjoy!

Hey Kaleb, we chatted a few months back. I’m in St. Louis in the West End. I own a 1899 brick foursquare house. I took your suggestion and will start a channel to document my home renovation within the next two months. I was wondering if the product you’re using to strip the latex paint from your stone would work on brick? The front of my brick is painted with a red latex paint. It looks great but I would like to show off the decorative brick.
Hey Caleb, I’m currently studying Conservation and Restoration in University. One of the materials we study is stone. Before applying anything to it you should use a product for consolidation, since it’s coming apart in layers. And then you can actually use a lime mortar to fill the “holes” before painting it.

You might want to hit the genealogical society in your area. They may have historic photos, and newspaper articles describing the house building and colors of the home. There might also be information on events held at the house, etc.
The lime rendering that they use in France for the chateaus and the castles does give a yellow hue to the building quite lovely actually, just remember your house your decision. I do like the yellow & green pallet for the old girl. 👻🎃🕷️🕸️
The lime rendering can be in other colors as well. And mineral paint can be in any color

Yes, you are correct about the city of Dresden. The picture is of the Katholische Hofkirche cathedral and it still stands. The Allies had instruction not to bomb it for historical reasons so most of the entire city square is intact and is wonderous.
Seeing the large group of people in the house gave the true perspective of how large the rooms are. And how fabulous to have that original photo of the house with people in period dress in the front. Fantastic!
We hate bringing people into work on our home. You said it exactly right, they just care for it like you do.

Originally the stone was not painted, but over time as the building began to have damp issues then people would paint over the stone. It's best to leave the stone bare. You can sand the stone to remove small imperfections and clean off paint.
To stop damp issues there is a simple solution that is guaranteed to fix it - you must install a trench with a French drain around the entire perimeter of the building at the bottom of the outside wall. Most important is to have the drain tile/slotted pipe installed at a minimum of 100mm below the interior floor level (naturally when you have a basement you need to dig the trench deep enough to go 100mm below the basement floor level). Fill the trench with only stone - no organic material.
It goes without saying that any Cement Render and/or Gypsum Plaster must be removed from the walls - both trap water in a wall and cause damp issues.
Frank and Kerry's adventures - I will refer you to look at Peter Ward UA-cam channel. He explains in detail in many videos all about problems in old buildings, dealing with the root causes of damp and the damage Cement Render and Gypsum Plaster do and how to fix.

Sorry to hear that things did not work out with the electrician. On the up side, most people are unaware, that you can save a great deal of money by pushing wire yourself. Later, you can bring in another electrician to make all the electrical connections to the circuit breaker, plugs, and switches. As long as you leave enough wire for the electrician to make all the connections, you'll be fine.

The tiger striping is called medullary rays and is especially pronounced in quarter sawn lumber

The Pocket Doors are Fab!!! For SURE they will come out WELL, when finished. The Book was a Great Find. The Colors will match your home🏡. The "first fix" electrics will be hard. If you do a Plan for All the cables It will make it easier to plan a route for All the cables & label all the breakers on the Fuse Board.
It would be interesting to know how you will plan the Heating of your home. The Original Radiators when working will take time to heat up. When Warm they will hold the heat longer.!!! To have The Original Radiators is A Gift. Good Wishes from Ireland ☘. 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀

the great thing about these old homes with old wood work still in them is that the wood they used is old growth wood. Highly prized wood from virgin forests. That gives you those tight growth rings that really makes it beautiful. To say nothing about the fact they were made by craftsman, not assembly line robots with routers for hands.

So to recap, this week was all about removal! The woods look GORGEOUS once you get off that filthy, gunky shellac. Very nice indeed. Wish I could help. Very interesting about removing the paint from the exterior stone. Wow....fun to have ppl coming through. The fireplace tiles are drop dead gorgeous!
I really love the color of the wood on that pocket door underneath all of the shellack! Its a beautiful, almost strawberry blonde, color.
Very cool find with that book. Every week I am more excited to see it finished. Even though it means that there will be less for us to watch every week.
There are years left promise. Plus who is to say i dont save another beauty after this one. That being said if i do get another home later in life i wont be moving this one is my forever home.

That book with all the original paint samples and house drawings from the 1890's is incredible and invaluable for the correct paint colors! It's going to look so stylish when done!

I am really looking forward to the restoration of the mansard dormers. My eye always goes to the crooked gable and the missing trim pieces. Once that area is restored, the whole facade will really start to come back to life. Are you going to recreate the decorative railings above the mansard?

I've been watching limestone restoration videos, so I think I know what you are looking for. Is it possible to find a limestone guy near you who will still it to you as a middleman? I'm amazed at how easily they can color match the patching mix to the limestone they are working on. Though, I'm sure they've had lots of practice.

If the decorative slate on the roof is green, I think you are correct about the window trim,.it was probably the same color green.

So beautiful, you are living my childhood dream. I love the yellow, cream and greens. I know bright colors are often used but the subtle colors really makes it special.
Hi Kaleb, I'm sure that the limestone is breathing much better in the areas that you treated and have removed the paint. It's so much work but it will save that beautiful stone. The pocket door section that you cleaned look so much better than the dark color it is now.
You color scheme will be lovely. I appreciate the clean look of glowing wood with its grain showing. The woodwork will shine. Don’t think the Victorians were as gloomy as we think, they went crazy with color!
I honestly hadn’t thought about it before but white-fronted buildings were much more of a Georgian/Regency thing (not sure what that era is called in America but you’ve got a lot of the architecture in Washington, including the White House), the Victorians generally preferred colour. So, now I come to think about it, it doesn’t surprise me that the house may have originally been yellow and green.

Great job. Just a suggestion on the colour choice. I think the exterior sills will be gorgeous in a sage green rather than a dark cream. That’s what the sepia tones are suggesting to my artist’s eyes. It will balance better with the green roof. If not sage then a light green from the chart that works in combo with the tiles. Keep up the good work. Enjoying your channel.

It is so AWESOME you found the book, you're now down to the stone, and can see original color! The interior of the house is really coming to life and you've made great progress. I could hear the Mrs. organ practicing from the corner shot you took in the parlor. Can't wait to see it a year from now. Running your own electrical lines yourself is the best decision you could make. Hope you find a local preservationist electrician to connect you at the end.
