    The little windows were more for ventelation like transom windows above doors, there is a book, of modern ventelation of double hung windows about if you open the top a crack and bottom you cause a natral air flow throughout the modern victorian home. Its about the movement of hot and cool air and keeping your home cool in summer and winter. Earlier boilers heated the whole house by having a masive boiler and over heating the whole house either from floor vents and rising heat or radiators. The window vents where away to keep the heat or cool air moving throughtout the house without keeping doors open. Book also explains summer/ or sleeping porches, Mostly second floor of bed chambers!!! Ok in old plans of homes, bed rooms as we know them today where called on plans bed chambers, the bed room were often sitting rooms off ladies bed chamber, If you didn't have a nursey off the ladies bed chamber, The bed room/sitting would often have that duel function. When children had nannies they were sent to the 3rd floor, but when they were of pre comming out age, 12 or 13 they were often moved to there own rooms on second floor. BTW have you gone to city hall to see if there are plans of your house on record, should be in the building department!!! Usually requiired to keep, like the book map!!! Use to have to go through them when doing varences in NY and Newark NJ!!!

      I was thinking the same thing, Erik K considering that this was the butler's pantry and would hold the wine stores and other sundry items that required the cold. You still see this in older homes all over Europe and the UK.

      I read somewhere once that transom windows were the lungs of old houses.🙂

      Laura Mitchell That’s a very apt description of this feature! I’ve lived in old apartments with these and they were wonderful for their purpose because hot air rises and when all the transoms were open, the hot air would travel around the ceiling areas of the house to exit out a high window left open to vent the hot air to the outside. Brilliant invention!!

    Sheet rock was a smart move for that small place, walls are looking really good. I would not change out the glass, while I love stained glass these windows are a part of the house from way back. You did a great job figuring out the wallpaper design its going to be lovely.

      I must concur. The existing art glass was snuggled into the house when K&K got there & it's got a flair all its own & this is coming from yet another person who loves "traditional" stained glass ornamentation.

      That art glass is pretty sweet. Definitely a good move to keep it! But I hope you'll have plenty of stained glass throughout. I love stained glass so much, but can't really afford it, so I'm looking into taking a few classes on the subject at my local trade school.

      Is that sheetrock? Isn't it drywall? People sometimes use the term interchangeably, but isn't sheetrock plasterboard while drywall is gypsum board? Sheetrock isn't made anymore, is it? It is very heavy and good to work with as it is harder to poke a hole in while installing, imo. Please correct me if incorrect, thank you.

    If that wallpaper pattern was used in the butler's Pantry, then most likely, it was an extension of the wallpaper used in the kitchen. It was also, probably, a much lighter and brighter color originally.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 2 роки тому +10

      Yes, I'd assume the background was very light, possibly almost white. Paper has a nasty habit of turning yellow and even brown as it ages. The pattern might have been a pretty bold red originally. You could try scanning the scrap and adjusting the white balance until the background is a very pale cream and see what happens to the red. It probably won't be perfect but a nice approximation.
      I just worked in a place with lots of wallpaper probably from the 1970s or 80s today, and even there it was absolutely amazing how much lighter the paper was behind pictures etc.!

    I'm sure you know this, but there's a special drywall, blueboard, sold for plaster veneer. As you say here, plain drywall is fine for the small space in this bathroom. But for a whole room, blueboard is the best bet. Your plaster skills are amazing and they deserve only the best!! As for the little windows, I suspect they would have had clear glass when the space was a pantry, since maximizing light was a major concern in the 19th century. Transom windows are another example of that. The art glass was probably added as a privacy measure when the space was converted to a bathroom.

    I’m actually the stickler in the room for having returned this room to it’s original use as a butler’s pantry, but I gotta say, if you’re going to stick with a powder room, you’re at least doing it right! Going with period appropriate wall finishes, fixtures, etc, makes it like it was always meant to be! I absolutely love this channel!

    • @lj5801
      @lj5801 2 роки тому +4

      A real butler's pantry is fine if you are using it as they would have been used in these old upper middle class houses: to display/store your services of good china; formal china; misc serving pieces; tea sets; dessert services; crystal wine glasses of every shape and size; and lots of sterling hollowware. A powder room is more useful these days (especially if you are opening the house for tourists). If it was actually just a pantry for food, it would still be useful in its original form.

    • @billymasoner3735
      @billymasoner3735 2 роки тому

      @@lj5801 I disagree. Especially in a true Victorian kitchen, where built in cabinets were not typically utilized. The butler’s pantry typically contained all of the true storage of the early Victorian kitchen. So unless this restoration includes built-in cabinetry, the butler’s pantry would be just as useful as the powder room. Beyond that, I’m just a stickler for keeping it as it was originally built as much as possible, regardless of what it was. That said, it isn’t my home, and as I said, I’m glad to see it’s being done the right way.

    Coating drywall is actually how drywall is mostly used in the Netherlands. (and i reckon in a lot of countries. I think that a normal mirror in the powder room is more logical than a medicin kabinet, because no one goes to shave in their downstairs toilet. You are doing a great job. It is so important to pass down skills like yours. We have so few people who care and take the time to plaster and repair woodwork, not to mention the wallpaper etc. We were lucky to find a great older gentleman who had the tools and skill to recreate our mouldings. Everyone else said nope you have to change the moulding to a current style. He even recreated our built in that the builder removed because the city wanted us to plywood sheath the walls. All of the window trim had to be made deeper because of the sheathing and insulation requirements from the city. Where we live the city gives you an easy time if you build new but if you renovate be prepared to strip everything to the bone in order to put in all of the current requirements.

With one window to the outside and the other to the kitchen, you would open one or the other to control the temp in the pantry. Just a thought. I grew up with root cellars and cold rooms.

But the Butler's Pantry is against a kitchen wall so will heat up through the wall, won't it. Hello Caleb & Kim, greetings from Scotland.... I have just spent the last 2 days binge watching your journey and while admittedly I was extremely sceptical about a Victorian house restoration (I was half expecting a rich person's check book resto... and I must offer my profound apologies for that disrespect) I very very quickly became hooked by your glowing enthusiasm for the old house& it's history and of course your sensible commitment to the house restoration where you recognised that some things cannot be original due to safety or common sense really won me over and you now have my utmost respect.
    Im almost 54 years old, I grew up in a red sandstone tenement building of a very similar age in the Partick area of Glasgow (Scotland), it had the lathe & plaster walls, ornate fireplaces even for a city tenement, sliding sash windows and I loved the really high ceilings too, it also had the high cistern for the toilet… we Scot’s call the flush handle on the chain the “Cludgie Pole” it’s an old expression and I cant tell you more about it, but those of us of a certain age remember the cludgie pole very well.
    Be safe, stay well and I wish you both the very best of luck with this extremely amazing journey - Scott

    Nice work! I remember one place we lived when I was a boy had a removable panel in my bedroom closet that gave access to the bathtub plumbing. Always thought that was a good idea so when we built our house a few years ago I incorporated that in our bathrooms.

    I suck at drywall & wallpaper, LOL! Wouldn't even dream of taking on this project. So I'm excited to watch you complete both in this bathroom. Well done on getting the design duplicated, BTW. And I love when you add in the house/neighborhood history. You are really closing in on completing the first room - how COOL! Keep going guys!!! Watching in Jax., FL.😎🌴👍

    I don't think those windows in the butlerpantry was to let light through, since the artglass is pretty dark. I think they acted like transoms to aircondition the house. Cool air from the basement to enter through a stuffy closet where the butler/maid was in a great amount of time a day in the middle of the house would make more sense to me

      I live in a modern house in Arizona and we had to do something similar for a closet and a pantry. We have 115F summers here. Between the heat seeping through the exterior walls and the lack of air circulation, the builder had effectively created 2 oven-like spaces. They would regularly get up to 100F or more. Not good for a closet, but especially not in a place for food storage. Cutting a small hole near the ceiling and adding an a/c vent that matches the rest of the existing ones made for a sneaky way to let the air exchange and cool those spaces down to high 80s/ low 90s F on the hottest days.

      My grandma still had a larder in her flat. It was the original kitchen from the 1950s. Her larder had a small window in it that was covered in something like a gauze to stop insects I imagine. So I agree that it could also be for ventilation.

    Y’all have made so much progress! I love the old medicine cabinets you have. I can’t believe anyone would say to remove the glass from those two windows… just think how wonderful they will look with the wallpaper! Take care and many blessings!

    Nobody is ever going to notice that ONE SQUARE of sheetrock!
    That wallpaper pattern looks as if it would lend itself to a using a stencil? Word of advice if you plan to wallpaper: Do it now BEFORE you install the sink and commode. Bathrooms are very difficult to wallpaper if those fixtures are in the way. You need space for your ladder. I know from experience. My motto after doing a powder room was, "I'd rather wallpaper a huge ballroom than a tiny bathroom." The small size of the room makes you think you can do it in a couple of hours. WRONG.

    You made the right decision to keep the original art glass in those windows. If they aren’t broken, why change them out? They came with the house and are in good condition!
