  • The Campbell House Museum is such an amazing time machine of a home and explaining what my plans are for our house would be impossible without showing it to you. So I took the time this week to show you not only this beautiful home but how I'm using it as a reference to restore mine. So no, this isn't a normal weekend work video but it should give you a good idea of what I want my home to look like when it's done. Special Thanks to Andy over at the Campbell House Museum.

The Victorian period covers 64 years - within that there were many different styles. The Campbell house looks beautiful but it is definitely from an earlier period - the interior of the Campbell house is Baroque revival. The mansard of your home is 2nd empire, the bay windows are Queen Anne, and the interiors are Arts and Crafts - the vertical lines in your moldings, the naturalistic motifs in the medallions, the leaf designs in your tiles, the geometry of your spindles and floor inlays, the stone in your fireplaces, etc. The baroque filigree of the 1850's, to a young wife in the 1890's, would have felt like her grandmother's house. The curvilinear lines of art nouveau would have felt more elegant to someone designing a home in 1890. Choosing baroque revival decor would be like building a house now and designing it a la 1985. I'd suggest researching designs from the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts movements.

Interesting to think about! That is a difference of a few decades between the two houses. The decor probably would’ve been more “modern.” I love art nouveau!

Well put! Seems like a lot of "Victorian" I see in the US is a combo of styles so Caleb could make his interiors eclectic being the long range of time the house was occupied. Where I live there was quite a bit of Victorian holdover in the Edwardian period. Interesting the Campbell house is so restrained on the exterior and way over the top on the inside. It's a lot!

Definitely Arts and Crafts, but not Art nouveau for a house built in the US in 1889. Art nouveau didn't become popular in the US until the mid 1890s and was never quite as popular here as in Europe.

You have picked a great house for inspiration, and your own home has so much potential. I can see that you intend to bring it back to its former glory, and you're taking your time and carefully researching before starting a project. You are a rare person for your generation, do you know that? Most folks your age are - if anything - going for the 'modern farmhouse' look. Not cool. I've seen so many pictures of houses absolutely *ruined* by this fad. Tradition, beautify, fine furniture pieces - these are the things that last. Good on you!!

I absolutely love the Victorian era and just historic old homes in general, the furniture, the detail, etc. But every room was so packed full of furniture and belongings and the patterns of the wallpaper and the carpets was all just so much. I would have no idea where to look first. It just felt so overwhelming and cluttered.

Major motifs of Egyptian art such as obelisks, hieroglyphs, sphinxes and pyramids were used in various creative ways.

I have some knowledge, that soapstone and marble carving is older than queen victoria. Copper as material is old. romans might have used them as pot and pans.
because i know there are multiple innovations that gave multi victorian sub-era; there is no innovation related to sinks, or tubs. There are hot and cold tap water innovation [aka boliers]. therefore those water holding materials became incorporated [as in adapted or modified] because need to use valve and spigots.

(I also have extensive research knowledge.) Sinks were commonly made from stone or wood lined with copper or zinc. It's not as if this is an outrageous claim being made. The claim was not that Victorians invented this use, just that it was common during this particular era to employ these materials for kitchen sinks.

The humble way he says "that's a lot grander than my place" reminds me of a story of my dad: He had a dream since he was a little kid to have a traditional wooden fishing boat. He accomplished that in his 50s with a lot of sacrifices and hard work. We all are really proud of him and we trully enjoy it. (Nothing like the freedom to swim in the Aegean sea without the fuss of a crowded beach!)
About 5 summers ago he got a docking (parking if you will) spot in the main port of the island and he was surrounded by huge yahts and expensive sailing boats. One evening while he was doing some minor maintaining job at our boat, the crew of a nearby yaht was pointing and laughing at our smaller (in comparison) and not so "luxurious" looking boat. They did not speak english (or greek of course) but the sentiment was obvious. Then my dad looked at them calmly and just with gestures asked them "This one(pointing at out boat) is all mine. Whos is the one you are on?"
Long story short, the true luxury is in the love and pride you feel for your realised dream, small or big.

Based on your house's build date and fireplace tiles, your house seems like it would have been more on the side of the art nouveau aesthetic rather than the whacky complementary color aesthetics of the 1850s. It may have been a lot less effusive with its decoration or at least its color schemes than the Campbell House- more focus on the beauty of nature and materials (maybe even some arts & crafts influence) and less on eclecticism maybe. From her parlor, to the bedroom to the dining room. I use to spend hours taking pictures of all the little decor items in the house and loved exploring it lolol.

It didn’t occur to me before that your ceilings might have been painted. I thought the medallions might have been painted and maybe gilded but I was imagining the rest of the ceiling always being white. But when I saw the painted ceiling in the Campbell House I realised yours might have looked like that too originally and then been painted over at some point. I’m now imagining you painting a design on your ceiling whilst lying on a scaffolding like Michelangelo. 😄

At the beginning of the video you'll see the Campbell house but if you look close you can just make out the iron fencing. See where Kaleb is standing in the entryway and the map behind him? That's a map of the old neighborhood and how it was full of buildings - and I think another map beside it shows the neighborhood today and the blank spaces of where the buildings once stood. So when he says it's a Survivor it truly is. Kaleb, you have to go back and videotape the butler's pantry. It has a lot of built-in cabinets and a window that you would pass things through to another room. You concentrated on the house but it also had a carriage house out back with two carriages in it! Loved seeing you operate your icebox door feature and how the shutters tucked away. I want everybody to finish this sentence: every Victorian house should have a blank. For some reason I'm thinking cherub statue LOL! ( isn't it funny how you look at Kaleb and he's growing a beard and with that cap on he's channeling the look of an army cap from days gone by) LOL!

I love the inspiration and I love the plan. Looking at the footage of the Campbell house side by side with your house, I'm struck by how lucky you are to still have so many of the original features of your house.
One odd thing about the Campbell house that struck me was how comparatively simple the balustrade on the entry hall staircase is. The Campbell balusters have a very basic, sleek profile, whereas the balusters on your main staircase are quite intricately turned. I'm sure this was an intentional aesthetic choice, it's even in the old photograph, I just wonder what design trend that was referencing at the time.
LOVE the Campbell house, and you'd better believe if I ever find myself in St. Louis, it will be at the top of my list of places to visit. Kudos to the team that is keeping that house looking so impeccable.

What does inspiration consist of? The inspirational style of decor in the 1850-70’s is miles apart from the inspiration displayed in the decor from 1880 through the turn of the century. Woodworking seemed to downsize to being not as elaborate (less is best) when made with quality wood and craftsmanship. Strip the paint. Restore the wood and polish the brass... and I will be smiling to beat the band! You are an inspiration to us all!

Listen to your house and your story and create that. Don’t be afraid to make it a functional home for today as well. I would create as much of that style of cabinets as you can in the kitchen. You don’t have kids yet, but once you do convenience is important. The bones are what makes it a Victorian house but you still have to live there today.
