DUUUDE! Christmas is coming and you guys have done some "Hanging-of-the-green" on the stair bannister/railing ! A friend of my mothers lived in a sweet Victorian, 3 story, house in the old Tacoma. It was gigantic, especially to a 6 year old me ! We went over around Christmas to visit and I still remember all the garland, wreaths, and swags through out the house. And an absolutely huge tree you could see from the street. The garland on the stairs brought that back clear as a sunny day.

Just an idea, the chandelier that has the two brass cups that you don't see light emitting from. Maybe do a ceiling design with gold reflective paint, mirror, or tin to bounce the light downward and would help defuse it around the room. Just an idea! I absolutely love your basement "Victorian Lamps R Us"! And as a visual person, I'm sure having them hanging up will help you decide on their final placement. The red glass is the bomb! Congrats on getting it all organized. I was so excited to see the photos of the Hall & Brown machinery displays at the 1904 Fair. My English grandfather was apprenticed to a cabinet-maker in 1917, and after moving to California taught woodworking in Los Angeles between 1938 and 1960. I have a few of his saws and other hand tools (such fancy handles!), as well as some photos of the shop where he taught. When some of his students went off to WWII, he kept their partially completed projects. Many never returned, and my Dad ended up using some of that wood in the home he built in Arizona in the 1990s. So great to see your enthusiasm and appreciation for 'all that old stuff nobody wants'. You are my people.

I just love your house, all the beautiful woodwork. It’s so warm and inviting, and it’s going to be awesome when you have it finished. I’m so glad that you are taking your time and keeping the house as original as possible, you are treating her like a real lady. It will be a wonderful place to raise a family. My favorite thing is your wood shutters in the library, I love how they fold away into the side panels. It’s so exciting to have electricity after so long working in the dark. I really love the grand staircases and the transom windows. You will be able to control the ventilation really well with the transoms and the staircase as the house was designed to do. I can’t wait to see all the tile work in the kitchens and bathrooms there so many possibilities when it comes to tile and I know you will insist on the best and most original looking. @@pb7379-j2k well for our boilers they're called pressure relief... it blows out hot water when the pressure gets too high so you don't blow the whole system... I've worked on a few but thus is canada not America so I don't know what I'm looking at, I just know it shouldn't be shooting out water... we don't use steam where I'm from.

Unless I'm mistaken, that valve that is shooting straight up is a pressure relief valve. Make certain it's not blocked - it's doing a vital job. My guess is that far too much pressure is coming IN to the system. That's your problem. Maybe that's what broke the pressure gauge. Didn't you have the water line re-done? Perhaps they need only put a pressure regulator on the water coming in to the house?

    • @icemancometh8679

Hvac Engineer from Chicago here. Everything Chris said it correct. I'm sure you know by now your pressure relief is blowing and your McDonnell Miller isn't working correctly. Sometimes those autofills get stuck open because the float gets crud on them *Added noted, you can clean those sometimes, the small electronic ones have strainers in them*. Glad to see your relief is working though, high pressure would of been very bad. In all honesty, if you can control your input you might not need to replace the relief valve but the only way you will find out is if you can check the correct pressure and reference what the relief is suppose to blow at, that's the MAWP. I hope everything gets taken care of soon though, winter is coming!

That is a main line air vent that is leaking, probably a #35 Vent Rite. When the boiler is COLD!!! (Not been running), unscrew it and put on a new one. The glass needs to be checked/replaced every year, no matter what anyone says. Expansion and contraction sands the end of the glass and it will leak or break. If your low water cutoff fails, which also should be checked every year, that automatic water feeder will flood the basement. The pressure gauge is no big deal, but the pigtail under it is. That should be checked yearly. It doesn't taste good, but you should be able to blow through the pigtail 😁. Tell your heating company you want these checked every year and make sure they do. If they give you any grief, get a new company. Remind them again before they come. It's an easy $10,000 or more for a new boiler, don't let it get wreaked by a lazy tech or lack of maintenance.

I have so been digging your restoration! This episode tops it, for me, so far. As I have a lighting fetish lol. I have a double wick burning chandelier by duplex oil lamps that I have been hanging onto for 20yrs personally. It is complete minus the glass but I put something different in the place temporarily that gives it a more masculine look compared to it's original Victorian era. The fixture itself is right in line with what you have going on. With that, I have a bunch of the crystals that hang from these lamps as well. Mine just hangs in my mom's garage. I would let go of my cherished piece happily, knowing someone who would appreciate it & possibly utilize it, was getting it. If you might be interested, I'd send pics! Also, vinegar is your friend. It is a excellent stripper for both metal & stone. Many other purposes as well. Y'all are doing a great job. Design & documentation! Thanks

    • @mickg3738

@@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack Hi Kyle. I doubt that the gauge is broken on the boiler. More likely it is the pressure reducer that is not doing its job and pressure is getting too high. Boilers are connected to city water lines that have over 100lbs of pressure in them, and the reducer is supposed to maintain the heating system at its proper pressure level. The excessive pressure may be causing the air release valve to fail, and reducing the pressure may stop it from spurting.
As a temporary solution to get heat or to trouble-shoot, you might try closing the inlet water valve (between incoming city line and pressure regulator) to get the pressure down to the correct level. After shutting off the supply from the city open up the drain seen at 19:24 to let water out and get the pressure lowered to the correct level. You can then run it for awhile with the the city inlet valve closed, and as long as air bleeder valve doesn't spurt water and the pressure doesn't drop, then you are in good shape until the system is repaired. No water will enter the boiler system and drive the pressure up as long as the city inlet valve is closed. The risk is that water leaks from the system from the spurting air valve (possible) or some other hidden location (unlikely) and water pressure gets too low. Just keep an eye on the pressure off and on for a few hours to ensure that it is stable.

I think that niche would have been where the hall tree sat so that people could hang their hats and coats plus store the parasols and canes. Not to say Kaleb couldn't paint in that space but if they do opt for a hall tree, to wait until they find the right one and ppla any decorative painting around it.

Love your lights. Lots of nice pieces. The double hurricane lamps would be a cool over the bar or over a pool table light if your talking speakeasy style. It could work but I know it’s a super personal thing to pick just throwing it out there. Each light is a piece of art and that is what this beautiful house is about. What a special gift of a house

Iam passionate about refurbishing project, i just love it sooo much when a good skilled craftsmanship makes the house comes back to life slowly but its emerging into its former glory, what you are doing is like reversing back time,,.. which is not easy job but its certainly very gratifying.

Kaleb, if you HAVE TO use the boiler before it's repaired (weather takes a nosedive), could you afix a cheap plastic bowl upside down to the ceiling above where the water comes out? it would direct the water back down to the floor or bucket, and keep the wood above dry. Dollar store has cheap dinnerware you could use.

Hope the boiler fix isn't too bad. I love keeping old systems working. I've got an old 1920s gravity furnace that's been converted to natural gas and takes up half the basement. I love it, though.

I love the old gravity furnaces, they get a bad rap for being "inefficent" but in these older homes with high ceilings they are still the best way to heat them...

@@timnewman1172 My home is pretty small, so the gas bill isn't too bad. I'll probably add a heat pump at some point, but still keep the furnace for emergency backup and extreme cold. It may not be the most efficient, but boy does it heat the house well and it gives the basement a nice spooky vibe.

Most likely it’s the PRV (pressure relief valve). Look for markings that will tell you the set pressure. Should be no greater then 15 psig. Newer type will discharge out the side. You’ll need to pipe that to a floor drain.

I Luv your "Chandelier Museum" set-up. It surely beats what I was thinking (a metal clothes rack)! It makes them easy to see, easy to work on! WHAT??? With all your spare time u haven't gotten around to it? U both r doing a Great Job prioritizing time with importance & weather & availability of resources! Maybe at some point a retired chandelier restorer will get bored with whatever he\she has decided to do to fill their time & come to help out! Just for Something to do with their expertise 🌹💕

I LOVE that your grandpa is helping you!! What a awesome, inspiring young man!! Tell him we'd love to see him more in your video's as you are going!! He's just as hard of a worker as you are. I guess I should rephrase that, you're as hard of a worker as your grandpa! What a awesome role model he is!! Hi Grandpa!!! =) Those pictures of the heavy equipment was too cool!! I used to work in the Photography studio in town, and I have seen a few glass negatives, and to me, they cannot make a picture as crisp and clear as those glass negatives can print!! The lighting is awesome! You have some really nice pieces there Kaleb!! And the spicket for the hose with the bird on it, is very cool!! I've never seen anything like that before!! OMG, I'm so sorry about your furnace.... I pray you got it fixed. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!! Peace, Kim ~

Somehow I managed to delete my previous comment, as well as your reply!
I still believe you have a leaking main vent.
2-pipe steam is indeed a fancy system, and one that would have been a very expensive installation in its day. With no individual vents on the radiators, ALL of the air in the pipes and radiators exhausts from the main vent as the system fills with steam. Definitely makes for a quieter house without the hissing radiators, as well as providing the ability to throttle them individually for temperature control.
It’s fascinating technology that seems sadly forgotten in this era of furnaces and forced air. If you haven’t done so, pick up a copy of “The Lost Art of Steam Heating”, by Dan Hollohan. It’s a great resource for understanding the nuances of a system like yours. Good luck, and please give some follow-up on the repair!

Your favorite shades are called cranberry opalescent (referring to the whitish color). It was very popular back then and very collectible today.
