    One thing about emergencies.
    You always need hot water.
    As the old saying goes, flames are for boiling, coals are for broiling.
    So, when you are first starting your
    Rocket stove have a big camping style coffee pot full of water ready to set on the stove when you've got big flames.
    Once the flames settle down a bit you can take off the water and set it aside. Then put your frying pan on and bring it up to frying temperature.

    • @johnndavis7647
      @johnndavis7647 2 роки тому +8

      You will feed a stick into the fire box from time to time to keep the temperature steady.
      After taking off the frying pan stoke up the fire again and put the water back on.
      When it's time to wash the dishes the hot water will be ready.

    If you haven't figured out how to bake on your rocket stove: use your dutchoven. Put you dough in a smaller pan. Put some sort of rack in the bottom of the dutch oven, caning jar rings will work, set the pan of dough in the Dutch oven put the lid on it and bake your bread. I would check it in about 15 minutes,.

    I have 2 Rocket Stoves and 2 of the camp style cast iron dutch ovens. I've been experimenting with cooking for my family. At one point, we had no electricity fo 5 days, and we couldn't even boil water! I burned part of the break loaf, but I didn't know about turning the dutch oven 1/4 turn every 15 minutes and turning the lid 1/4 turn in the opposite direction.
    I have the same model of Rocket Stove and love it.

    I watched a UA-cam video where the man made his own fire starters using the cardboard egg crates. He added dryer lint in each cup, and then took a lit candle and dripped the hot wax over each individual cup containing the dryer lint balls. Then once they were dried he tore off only what he needed to use in his wood burning stove with kindling and wood to ignite his fire. Much safer than using Vaseline and less toxic as well.

    Cast iron needs to be used with caution on rocket stoves though. Cast iron does have a high temp limit even though most people don't seem to think it does. If a rocket stove is running fully they could easily hit 6-700 degrees. At them temps cast iron can crack. Even a lot of porcelain coated cast iron dutch ovens reccomend not to use above 450-500. Nonstick cookware is rated even lower in most cases. Just something I thought might be worth mentioning. A lot of people aren't all that experienced cooking directly over wood fire that is harder to keep consistent. I have a keyhole fire ring I use a lot with a grill over the narrow part and tripod over the round part. Fire burns in the round part and I rake coals under the grill. I can hang a dutch oven from the tripod. The grill I can use as a grill or for cookware at lower temps. It is a very relaxing, slow life down, way to cook. In the meantime the kids can roast hotdogs, sausages, pie iron sandwiches, or whatever it's really great. Also as a 30+ yr electrician that has busted out hundreds of cinder blocks, a regular metal framing hammer works better. The dead blow hammer(rubber mallet) spreads the impact out in to broad of an area. Another thing that works great for the block built stoves is topping it with an old gas stove burner rack.

    I watch a family from Europe cook outside. She constructed a oven outside to bake her homemade bread. The base was a tree stump. On top she made a wood frame such as tree branches. Then filled frame with hay. She then made a clay mixture up and cover the frame and hay up inside and out. She then fire it up to dry the clay. She also made a small door to close oven hole up if needed. Great idea for an outside oven. Hers was a smaller version. It wasn’t huge.

    A couple comments regarding the CMU homemade rocket stove.
    I've seen many a skilled Mason use a Mason's Hammer to chisel away CMU block to make new blocks similar to what you were trying to achieve. A Mason's Hammer has a single fine point on the back side similar to a claw hammer but used like a chisel. The trick is to nibble away from the edges which are the weakest points of the block. Then slowly chip away little bits at a time.
    The other comment is that CMU block is not intended to take high heat. Rocket stoves can produce very very high heat and the The lock is likely to crack and possibly even explode, so I would use caution and do this only as a last resort. Alternatively, if you have enough block or even want to build something permanent, you could build a large grill with fire brick liner on the inside, which is specifically discount to take high heat- - it is often used on the inside of fireplaces and pizza ovens

    If you put soap on the bottom. I prefer bar soap,
    Any will work,like ivory or whatever. Any that have a smell. Will smell for a bit .
    Liquid soap, like dawn , will be a bit sticky.
    Either one, will allow much easier clean up !

    For the cinder bock rocket stove, I saw an alternate method on youtube. Instead of breaking the end off a cinder block, you can replace that particular part of the stove with two long paver stones and a brick for the back wall part. It would look like the letter "H" from above. I don't know if it would make the whole thing less sturdy, but it seemed to work. I wonder if these types of stoves would disintegrate over time, being heated and cooled...

    My husband has always been curious about Rocket stoves and this video prompted us to look into making one. When we camp we often try to make some of our 'usual' meals with non-conventional means - just to know that we can do it. Looking forward to your video on the folding oven, it will likely get us to use ours more. Thanks for sharing there are other ways to get the job done ... BTW, the eggs looked delicious!!! Stay safe.

      @@RoseRedHomestead Our latest challenge has been cooking with stackable dutch ovens and briquettes. Made a pork roast and baked potatoes last summer and it was really good. Actually, it's the best way to make baked potatoes. For the folding oven, silicone baking cups and other shapes will likely work. It's tough to find a muffin tin or those type of baking containers that fit the space (quite small). Good luck with your testing!

      Oh my goodness--what an experience. I remember when I was about 8 years old I had to operate our washing machine--the old wringer type--and do the family laundry. I would hang up the diapers outside on the clothesline and in the winter, they would freeze! Got my arm caught in the wringer

My little arms were fine, just an accident. He had quick response time, I was in above my elbows. With this many of us relating this, it must have been a common occurrence. great video & information, fun to see you doing the construction.. we also have an ecozoom versa from Amazon.. and a couple home made .. my husband got excited about them a few years ago & has put together a couple, from used cans of different sizes.. but none from concrete blocks & oh my gravy, he saves every little branch & twig from fallen limbs from the Fir & Cedar trees around our property, which is a lot here in the PNW.. he even saves the cones that fall after they dry, I think we have 3- 30 gallon trash cans full of cones.. and a couple of twigs.. I'm afraid to actually count, lol, he stores them between the garage & fence so out of sight.. & to this day we havent cooked a thing on any of them.. lol, I showed him your video & he said ALRIGHT!!!! lol... thank you! • @RoseRedHomestead
      @RoseRedHomestead  3 роки тому

      You could, but I cannot recommend that. I stick to USDA guidelines. However, next time I make that sauce I am going to thin it down. The USDA says it should be at serving consistency and this recipe was thicker than that.

    • @pgmmtngal
      @pgmmtngal 3 роки тому

      Answer doesn’t seem to fit. I’m so interested in the fire starter with a cotton ball. Sure sounds safer than a squirt of lighter fluid! I’ve always worried about that! Do you just rub the cotton with Vaseline ? Does it then burn long enough to get the sticks going?

    • @Link380090

      Patricia muro yes, you coat a cotton ball with Vaseline. Just roll it around a bit. You can also save your dryer lint and store in a Ziploc bag to use for firestarter.

  • @TillieMuckMuck
    @TillieMuckMuck 4 роки тому +9

    From my own experience a rocket stove created from blocks or bricks will work, but not really that effective. Problem is that there are too many openings between the blocks which defeats the true concept of a rocket stove. The combustion air should only come from one location, near the bottom, in order to updraft correctly.
