hello. just a tip from a rice-eating-asian living in asia:
steam makes the best fluffy rice so keeping the lid on all the ways is best. 7-7-7 is also a good rule, first 7 minutes on high, next 7 on a low simmer, last 7 is just off and letting the steam do it's work and ensures that rice doesn't crust into the bottom and stick like glue.
loved your tartare sauce and the entire video

So we have a very similar one to that store bought one. Ours is green. I scored it for $20 at a resale shop a few years ago. We used to take it camping with us. They work amazingly well. So cool you guys have been cooking your meals with it the last couple weeks. Looks like a great meal you have there.

I used aluminum sheet to place the cook ware on to avoid soot. I made my gasifier out of a discarded rice cooker's inner and outer sheet plus another tin can to fit in the middle. Si now I can cook using wood with no soot at all

Ive often used a rocket stove for cooking. But in the end, the soot from the fire really leaves your pots covered and its hard to get clean. Ive learned to coat the pot with dawn or some other dish detergent first, then it comes off very easy.

My husband made a smaller rocket stove out of a 12 quart stainless steel pot & used clamps to put the lid on. Our grill part is closer than yours. Ours does burn very well with just a few sticks.

I haven't seen a side by side with a rocket stove and a regular grill or a camp stove if you're looking for video ideas.
Also I used to make fire starters by mixing wax with sawdust. I would let pine stumps sit for a while then used the chainsaw to cut into the to get the sawdust that had become rich with sap. Melted the wax in an old pot, added the sawdust, mixed it up, let it cool, pop it out of the pan and cut it up. Just throwing it out. worked great for me.

@ 9:26 when she ask's about the lid on or off , which one cooks faster? With the lid off anything your cooking takes longer, with lid on heat is trapped, less evaperation, of course, so it will take longer, unless your cooking eggs of course.
Great video, thanks for the comparison.

Old Boy Scout tip: when cooking over an open fire, smear a little dishsoap around the outside of the pan. This makes it easy to scrub off the soot that builds up from the flames.

Another great video!! I have the BioLite stove with the added grill. It works pretty good but fire control takes practice. It'll burn anything too, even little twigs. It also has little ports to charge your phone or an iPad. I've tried both and it did pretty good charging. We have also used my cookie cooling racks over open flame to just try them (I have several lol) and they too did the job for burgers and dogs. Just trying to think outside the box, be frugal and carry light of need be. If I'm on foot packing my heavy sun oven on my back won't be an option!!
Jaime and Jeremy thanks for doing these videos. You guys really do a great service for the prepping/homesteading community. And I consider myself a life long "prepper." I've always worried how I'd care for my kids if I'd lost my job when they were still at home. It's not about zombies or no rule of law it's about LIFE!!! TFS! Blessings ~Lisa

This video was fun and a good comparison. Jeremy your DYI stove was an excellent low cost, materials forage, one's own concept, kind of project. The only thing I would have done different (and this is hindsight) is I would have used a smaller diameter up draft tube. This thought comes from the observation of the fact the DYI didn't develope an intense turbo kind of flame compared to the EcoZoom. The EcoZoom seemed to come to heat faster and was easier to maintain. Your production and editing skills are the BEST! Love your channel! Be Blessed

Good video... I'm currently looking at rocket stoves. I live in a city and have limited space and resources to store/ build my own... but this was informative. The former chef in me wants to just pass along this tiny bit of advice.... You might have better luck with the rice if you use a liquid measuring cup for the water- those were for dry ingredients. No big deal overall... but something precise like muffins or breads, it'll mess things all up.

I have a Silver Fire Scout backpacking rocket stove. For a test I cooked up some rice and lentils. It cooked reasonably, but like you, I found i constantly needed to be on top of feeding the flames. Given the amount of effort, I wonder if it would be better to just cook over an open fire.

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 років тому

In our tests, there is no comparison to open fire cooking and a rocket stove. Even though the rockets stoves require constant attention, they use about 70% more wood.

Thank you for the video! You have inspired me to try my rocket stove again and convinced me to get a second one as soon as I can afford it. I was discouraged because I was having difficulty controlling the temperature. Do you have any tips on controlling the temperature yet? I am going to buy one of those laser thermometers - already in my Amazon cart. I didn't realize how cheaply I could buy one. We do not have a DIY or an Ecosmart. But in any case, it is so much of a savings not using the stove. We went without the stove for most of the summer, not just to save electricity costs but also to keep the house cooler. Another thing we do to economize is to use a toaster oven and 2 induction burners instead of using the stove. We have saved a ton of money using those induction burners for nearly 2 years now. We just keep them right on top of the stove and cook there. Every little bit helps!

    • @Guildbrookfarm
      @Guildbrookfarm  7 років тому +1

On the Ecozoom, just close or open the bottom door to control the air flow. Also pulling some wood out will reduce the heat. Even though these tools are an investment, I can see where they will quickly pay for themselves and then start saving us $

I'm no expert, but I've been reading up heaps on rocket stoves,
Your problem with the home made one MAY be the input - output dimensions.
ie: feed opening vrs riser height and diameter
From what I've read ... It's critical to get the ratio right - for efficient burn
But a well put together video -- thanks

  • @johnndavis7647

Someone gifted me one of those rocket stoves. It's very nice. I have built several rocket and hobo stoves over the years. They are fun to play with.
The store bought stove is very sturdy and should last many years if kept out of the weather or at least kept covered.
My tin can rocket stoves might last a year if I painted them and kept them dry.
They both work fine. There is a big difference in cost though. My home made stove costs a almost nothing to build.
I used a 5 gallon metal bucket for the outside and a big pop corn tin
For the inside and a juice can for the feed chute.
My favorite hobo stove is a one gallon paint can outside and a coffee can liner. I put a gas stove burner grate on top of it. Fits perfect.
Punch holes all around the bottoms and half way up and some around the top. Turn the cans so the holes don't line up.
Both of these stoves have bails that make them easy to move around.
So cheap that you can have two side by side. One on high and one on low.
    Thanks for the video.

I've got two rocket stoves I made out of concrete. They work exceptionally well, with the drawback of not being portable. But the cost on 'em was right. They're blended into our patio garden right now.. I think your DIY stove would work even better if it had a concentrator around the top.

I thought that noting that his cooker opening might be too large was a good catch, and the chamber might be too high for burning sticks as well, since rocket cookers contain the heat in a small chamber, sending the heat out thru the small opening, intensifying it. They're great for boiling water, that seems plain! [coffee!] And then when they slow down a bit, not bad for cooking something with a short cook time, like eggs, or sauteed roots & leaves, and put the game on a spit over a REAL fire. Thank you for showing us how hungry people use prepper equipment. You gave a lot more info than the manual could. I thought the digital thermometer was kind of funny, never see those out on the Oregon Trail haha

Great comparison, but I'd say from my view, the fire seems closer on the EcoZoom?

That EcoZoom Versa is a real nifty little item, but I'm not only cash-poor, I'm kind of committed to "Use what you've got to get what you need." I love being able to re-purpose something I've already got laying around - usually something that may have been a curiosity (or impulse) purchase, but that didn't or doesn't get used much after all; or, something which is no longer fixable to use for its original purpose. Makes me feel better about being less than brilliant, shall we say, in the first place. Self-Redemption! Halleluja! LOL! SO - I still like the idea of the turkey fryer conversion. With just a wee little bit of fine tuning, I think it's going to be just fine as a bang-up outdoor cooker!
I do enjoy these real-life comparison test videos, though - A LOT! I'm very hesitant to spend on things I've never had any experience with or even seen in operation, so I really appreciate y'all making that possible for me to see and hear, without the anxiety of a "blind" purchase on my part. Thank you both!! 🤗🤗😍

I'm quite sure you can make/modify a BBQ grill grill to place over the hole so you can use small pots on the rocket stove. I like the DIY aspect of the rocket stove.

I built mine out of bricks yesterday. I have some old pallets so I took the otherwise unusable wood from some of those and broke them up and use for fuel. Got so hot it warped my stainless steel cooking pot. I'm considering building a kiln using the same idea.

The problem with using pallet wood for fires is they have a lot of chemicals to preserve the wood.

I have seen a charcoal starter with a grate used for cooking a steak so I think you could use it with wood too.

made a rocket stove out of old bricks and worked great. Obviously not portable but for home use was great and grandkids liked helping build it. Bricks just put on top of each other and no cemented together

Great vid guys, been meaning to pick one of these up since I saw Jnull0 using them, heck he even pressure cans on them. I probably should just pull the trigger on one & that echo looks like a good sturdy one. Thanks for sharing!👍👍👍 And yes this weather is crazy, high 80's last week & pretty heavy first frost this morning lol go figure!

You guys remind me if a neighbor growing up. They were very self sufficient and I could see them cooking on a rocket stove had we had them back then. Though it would have been local fish, carp, walleye, bass etc. Or squirrel, raccoon, or porcupine. Porcupine is really good eating if your in a survival situation. Easy to hunt, and you just burn the quills off in a fire before you butcher. Cool video guys.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Your DYI is superior because it is handmade from your own stuff. Kudos for making one yourself; anyone can buy already made. Improve what you have all the time and your will reach perfection.

They are economical sources of heat but, monitor to maintain stable temps for the pressure cooker.
Better to can outside if its too hot in the kitchen.

wondering if ya could use double lined elbow and some doubled lined stove pipe as a rocket stove?

    • @rogerlyons209

wondering if ya needed to put clay or wood ash in it?

    • @wownewstome6123
      @wownewstome6123 2 роки тому

Rocket stoves need to be well insulated and a certain height. The key is to get a very hot burn so wood gases are created and burned off, so don't skip the insulation, which is usually clay or clay with perlite mixed in to lessen the weight. Done right, you get just a little smoke in the beginning, and then virtually no smoke. It allows you to cook with twigs instead of logs. Or you can cook with other solid fuel.
