I'm just getting into fishing. On a whim I decided to go look at fishing poles because I had some time to kill. I spent forever looking at all of the poles they had, feeling unsure what to get. I asked an older man that came down the aisle what he might suggest. At first he said I should look at the Abu Garcia stuff, but after a couple minutes of explaining some things to me, he noticed the GX2 and told me, "honestly, if all you want is a pole you can take anywhere with you, just that Ugly Stik right there."
Best review I've seen of this combo yet. Cracks me up when people talk trash on the reel. No, it's not the most expensive thing in the world. However, I've used it in rivers, and pulled out about 30 pounds of steel cable trapped in a weed bed. Both the rod and reel held up just fine. I was so impressed with the durability that I bought another one. As you mentioned, it's not the smoothest reel on the planet, but it's completely functional. The combo is far heavier than my finesse rigs, but still light enough to throw around all day for bass and pike. There's enough sensitivity with the rig to pick up on smaller nibbles from pickier species too. If I only had one rod, it would be the 6'6" Medium.
Jake, thanks brother, yea this combo is great and yea the reel works just fine. I’m wanting to pick up some more Ugly stick rods to go with some of my other reels, I really love the rods because of their toughness and the line guides are the best design I think I have ever seen. They put out a new spinning reel as well called the ugly tough reel, I also have my eyes set on that too. Go Ugly Stick!!!
I used this fishing pole to catch all types of fish bass , catfish , bull gill and more it's held up to some really decent sized fish and I just really like the fell of it. One thing I love is how yes it doesn't look the best but I've got my biggest catfish and bass and also my first perch with this pole so my review on it 1000/10 my favorite so far
Got two of these, one came with the Shakespeare reel and one with a Uglystk reel both needed to be taken apart and oiled with CorrosionX and regreased with marine grease after that the longevity of use is better than new! My grandson and I love these setups🤙🏽

I just bought this. Cheaper to buy the combo then the rod alone. $6 bucks less for combo. This is my second ugly stik same length and weight as the 20 year old one. This is a great bargain. I fished for everything with low tech indestructible Zebco 33/202 etc. All my reels are scuffed up from dropping it. These are all business no frill and I like it .
I have this rod in the medium action 2 spinning rod and I also have it in a medium heavy bait caster rod one piece for Pier fishing 🎣 I be putting up to 3oz luers on this rod and it's been a amazing rod 👍🎣
Good video. Here’s the issue with ugly sticks that I’m seeing a lot more of in recent years. The targeted group of anglers that buy ugly sticks tend to view ugly sticks as a better rod then they actually are. A lot of younger, older, and newer anglers I feel put these rods on a pedestal. They really are not great rods, but one of the best budget friendly/beginner rods available. They are simply a beginner rod that can take a beating and keep going. But it tends to struggle in weight, sensitivity, and comfort. If you’re a beginner or extremely casual angler just looking for a reliable rod you don’t have to worry about, this is the rod for you. Anything more I’d suggest other options.
I’m new and that’s why I got it. You can’t beat that price, I’ll get something better when I feel I got better. I’m still learning my knots and lures and everything else.
I own multiple aGX2 series rod and reel combos. 2 spinning combos and even the baitcasting combo. I'm eventually gonna get the catfish rod. I've put them through so much abuse. From dropping them in the Wabash river, to fishing in Florida. They are a lot stronger than they look. They are budget friendly, but they are great quality rods
Pretty much my favorite do-anything budget combo because while I love fishing I have enough other expensive hobbies too to where my gear is best described as jack of all trades budget style. Just a gx2 and an altoid tin full of ned rig colors from zman and I'm happy. Cheers! (Ed: hell even my compact option is an ugly stik dock runner spinning combo, just so easy to have on you whenever)
Been using these rods here in California for 30 years. In the sacramento/San Joaquin Delta and Sierra Nevada mountains to hills. Always perform. It’s about your line/wait/bait/lure and a reliable proven rod. Reels are good too for the price.
I caught the biggest fish I have ever caught on one of these GX2 rods, at 30something pound Black Drum. but I had a Penn Pursuit 4000 reel on it instead of the reel that comes with it. Had the Penn spooled with 12 lb Berkely Big Game monofilament. Fishing off the State Park Pier down at Gulf Shores, Alabama thanksgiving week 2022. The rod held up. The Drum was peeling drag like crazy. I was impressed. I usually only catch Hardhead Catfish, Whiting, and a few other smaller species down there. I honestly thought the rod was going to crack or break at any moment, or the line would snap. What can I say,? I was lucky that day.
Good for kids or a girlfriend to use. That’s what I used for years when I was a kid. The price for a gx2 ugly stick is 50 bucks where I live. At that price I’d buy a diawa arid x or a shimano sellos both 49 dollar rods and way better. Put a cheap reel on it and you’ll be happy. Ok now all the ugly stick guys can tell me why I’m wrong😎
I have the gx2 4'8". The reels are trash imo. The reel lasted 2 seasons and just fell apart at the start of its 3rd. I threw a Kastking shark 3 on the rod with 6Lbs and it's my best set-up. I like short 1 piece rods for trout and bass and the Uglystick does not disappoint.
I have been trying to know where is the reverse switch. Browsed the net and listened to some other UA-cam video without success. Thank you for clarifying that it doesn’t have the reverse (anti-reverse) switch. 👍🏻
I bought one of these this year for this trouting season and I love it. Runs 12lb line no problem, the real is so damn smooth for a cheaper one but like you said not the smoothest. Great combo if you're new to fishing or want to try out a spinning real... Hell, it's even good if you're experienced. You spend a little over 100 bucks for the combo in Canada in some spots but it's worth every penny. Much better than the cheaper brands you can find here.
I only buy Ugly Stik rods. I have several different sizes and plan on getting more. The 7 foot ultralight casts a long way and I love it with 6lb test. I also got the 7 medium action, it's better than the 6.6 in my opinion. And I have a 7 Ugly Stik lite with cork handle. Plus a little one with 4lb. They're the toughest rods around, especially for the price. I can't wait to get a 7 foot heavy action for grouper and bigger fish. They're only $44. Great deal.
Nice man, i agree the ugly stick line of rods are hard to beat in terms of durability. I would choose one of these for pure longevity over any other rod out there. I don’t know how they do it but these rods are virtually indestructible and I love the line guides they have, it is an incredible design that I don’t know why more manufacturers don’t use. I have thought about getting the ugly tough reel that they just came out with it feels just as durable as the rods and it might make a good pairing. Thanks for checking out the channel man, keep it Blue Collar!
@@bluecollaroutdoors5556 I think the durability comes from a mix of graphite and fiberglass. They have a graphite core. The old ones had guides that lost the centers, I agree that the new design is much better. I heard the reels are heavy but tough. This rod was several years old and used only braid and has never showed signs of wear on the guides, so you must have a dud my dude!
@@bluecollaroutdoors5556 could be? Anyways, that's just was my real experience. Happy fishing.👍

Don't want the Shakespeare reel I want the GX2 reel's got them. 5 months ago.
How much this fishing rot
This is medium action rod or Medium-heavy
It is a medium all around, ugly stick classifies their rods differently since they are fiberglass. It’s like a medium power with a moderate action.
Does it come pre spooled?
Thanks for the question man, unfortunately it doesn’t come pre spooled. I do run braid on mine with a floro leader but 10 or 15 pound monofilament line would be perfect as well and far less expensive. I hope this helps!
We need a gx2 8ft mudcat edition
Nice river, where you fish out of?
Big Piney River as it runs through Fort Leonardwood, MO
I just snapped mine in half 😢
What size reel comes with the gx2?
This one is a 30 size

Can i use 40lb line on it.

Actually the rod is $40 bucks so the reel is cheap, around $15 bucks. The rod is what you are going to want. Good video!
