      Hi Nayeli!
      So NASP stands for National Association of School Psychologist, which is the the national organization for school psychs in the United States.
      When a program is accredited by NASP it means that the program meets the nationally recognized standards....so it is a "high quality" program in other words. Having the NCSP credential, which is what you get through the NASP application, tells employers you meet the criteria/standards and verifies that you are fully prepared to be a school psychologist.
      However, if your program is not NASP accredited it does not mean that it is not a good program, there are non-nasp approved programs that are really good, you just need to do your research. I believe SP graduate programs need to apply to get accredited by NASP and some may chose not to do it or haven't tried getting it.
      Some people say it is worth it and some say it didn't help them much or made a big difference, so it is a personal preference as it is not required to get a job. There is also CASP which is the California Association of School Psychologist (which I am part of), each state has its own I believe.
      As far as how long the process is for your NCSP application, it depends if your program is NASP-approved or not. If it is, the review process takes about 4 weeks. If it is not NASP-approved, it takes about 3-4 months.
      Sorry for such a long reply! I hope I answered your question though lol :) You can also visit www.nasponline.org for more info.

    As for the internship hours would we have to be supervised by a school psychologist or it doesn’t have to be? As long as we’re in a school setting?

      If you have your BA already I believe something like that. If no prior eduction then more like 6+ years. It's 4 years for BA in Psychology or related. 2-3 years for Grad school which checks off practicum hrs + 1,200 hours internship since it's required in order to complete the program. Apply for State License. Apply for NASP certification if needed (unknown time frame). I THINK if I followed correctly. I am 27 wanting to go into the field and it feels so late for how long I'd be in school but better late than never I suppose!

    Hi! Thank you so much for this video. I currently am a junior this year and am a Psychology major. I had a couple questions for you. Do you know any good online programs for a masters in school psych as well as an EDS? Also do you know if the GRE is required for graduate programs for school psych? Thank you.

      @MrsSchoolPsych  4 роки тому

      Hi Katelyn,
      I don't know much of online programs for school psychology but I know there are some out there.
      As for the GRE, some schools do require you to take it but not all school do, so you might want to look at the requirements for the schools you are looking into applying for. For example, a lot of private non-profit schools don't require you to take the GRE but have other requirements in place. Hope that helps!

    • @MrsSchoolPsych
      @MrsSchoolPsych  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Melissa!
      Having a B.A. in liberal studies should be fine :)
      Getting your degree in psychology, or related field, is recommend just because it would better prepare you for the content that is taught in school psychology. For example, certain theorist or developmental information. However, it is not a requirement to get accepted into a school psychology program. If you have any other questions, let me know. Hope that helps!

    Yet another great video. I live in NYC are and have applied to an MS in a school psychology program. The director liked my application and has requested an interview. Do you have any tips for this process? I feel like I have a fair chance of getting in.

    • @MrsSchoolPsych
      @MrsSchoolPsych  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Chet!
      In most of these interviews they want to get to know you and see if you are a good fit for their program. In a way, they are interviewing you to see if they should give you a spot, similar to a job interview. Have a good understanding of their program so you are ready to answer any questions they may ask you. Also, be your self (in a professional way lol)! They want to get to know you, your personality, and your educational background. Make sure to tell them your goals and how their program will help you reach them. Dress nice and be organized. Each program has a different process and interview questions, but in my opinion, they usually have the same purpose which is to see if you are a good fit for their program. I hope this helps and good luck!!

      Usually every state has their own requirements that you would need to meet to start working as a school psychologist. It is different for every state so you would need to do some research on the state you would like to work in.

    I review the NASP site you linked in a previous comment. There are some programs that are NASP accredited but they’re have conditional approval. Does attending a conditional program have any effect on obtaining certification or post employment opportunities?

    • @MrsSchoolPsych
      @MrsSchoolPsych  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Kayla,
      I believe that means that they are still in the process of getting NASP accredited.
      Attending a conditional program or a non-nasp approved program doesn't affect employment opportunities. The main thing you need to be able to practice as a school psych is your state credential. You can always apply for your NCSP. I will be uploading a video on this topic sometime tomorrow, so keep an eye out for it :)

    I am currently getting my BA in Psychology. I am just wondering if when you apply to grad school, is there a chance that one or two classes you took in undergrad could transfer credits to grad school?

    • @MrsSchoolPsych
      @MrsSchoolPsych  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Molly,
      Usually undergrad credits don't transfer to grad school to cancel out other classes. The classes you take in grad school are considered upper level and are not ones that you would take in undergrad so I would say no, undergrad classes don't transfer credits to grad school.

    Is educational studies an acceptable major?

    • @MrsSchoolPsych
      @MrsSchoolPsych  4 роки тому

      It would depend on your program of choice but usually programs don't require you to have a bachelors in a specific area of study to apply for a graduate program in school psychology so educational studies would probably be fine. I have people in my cohort who are teachers and others who got their BA in history. The main thing is having a passion for this field and being somewhat familiar with children, school systems, special education, etc.
