    As a future school counselor, I would just like to debunk the myth about what school counselors do. School counselors help students in this 3 fields: academic success, social-emotional learning and career.

    This is great! I am interested in school psychology but torn with speech pathology as well. Please do this comparison next😀 both still work in schools and child study but not sure which to pursue. Thanks

    Hello,
    You have misinformation about what current professional school counselors do. I’m a first year professional school counselor and I was also in between school psychology, school counseling, and MFT. I know it can be confusing because our role is changing, we have new profesional standards we have to follow. It’s like there is a wave of new counselors. We do address 3 domains, social emotional and academic development as well as college and career readiness. And we address it using an MTSS and ASCA framework (3 levels and 3 domains) and we use data and standards to address these domains and levels. We also use other frameworks to build a comprehensive school counseling program. We also practice advocacy and policy change at multiple levels because our role is misunderstood and sometimes confused. Sorry but my graduate program was big in advocacy and every time I see misinformation I like to share what I know. If you have any questions you can look up the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) to see what professional school counselors do at elementary, middle, and high school level.

      Hi Diana,
      I appreciate you feedback! I am trying to keep these videos short so I am not including everything each professional does. I will add the ASCA website in my description so people can go there for more information. Thanks!

      Hi there Diana I am an inspiring future school counselor and just had a question. Don't you need at least a bachelors to get your feet wet and then go from there? Is it mandatory to have a masters?? Thank you in advance.

    How do you juggle home life, being a mom, and run your household? Trying to figure out how many classes I will be able to take on each semester.

      It definitely isn't easy but it is doable. It takes a lot of prioritizing, organizing, and sacrificing. I consider myself an organized person and would have a routine that worked for me and my family. I would do my homework at night after my kids would go to sleep, I gave up hanging out with friends in order to have time to do my homework, etc. It takes a lot of self discipline but I would constantly remind myself that it was only temporary and eventually it would pay off.

      Hi!
      Yes I do! I have a planner and I use a lot of lists to stay on track of what I need to get done. I love to organize and be organized. Being organized in grad school will definitely help you so much!

    Is there a major difference in pay between a school psychologist and a counselor? I can't decide which one I want to get my master's in so I'm finding out the pros and cons of each.

      Hi Kailyn! I am entering my M.Ed program this summer (with a concentration in school counseling) and in my state, VA, school psychologists typically get paid a little more than school counselors. School psychologist have to take a few more credits than school counselors and their program is three years vs. two years. Their last year includes an internship as well. I chose the school counseling route because I wanted to work more with the general population. School psychologist do a lot of IEP in special education testing, which is great! I just know that I personally wanted to work with the wide variety of kids. I was torn between the two professions as well but I truly think you would be happy pursuing either route. it’s just more about what you personally want to do. Hope this helps and good luck!

    NJ, Cali, and NY are the highest paying so salary is a huge wage difference.

    • @nameavailable987
      @nameavailable987 4 роки тому +3

      Yeah but the cost of living in those places are ridiculous. 6 figures in ny/Cali is not the same as 6 figures in Texas or Florida.

      @@nameavailable987 i absolutely agree but if the views were to educate on how much money is in the field then those states are suitable to explain the pay

    I love this new series, and I think you should compare and contrast like the way you're doing it 😊 Aslo, I noticed in your background you have a brain anatomy picture, and I was wondering where did you get it from?

    Hey, your video was very helpful to me as someone who was aiming to distinguish between a school counsellor and a school psychologist
    Do you know if a UK undergraduate can work in USA. Im aware a masters is required but can i do it in UK or has to be done in the USA?

      I did my research on both careers and looked at the pros and cons. I took into consideration my personality and what I would enjoy doing on a daily basis. I also spoke to a school psych and school counselor who were already in the field to get insight on what their days looked like :)

    what if i have a degree in counseling? will this still work for a school psychologist?

    • @MrsSchoolPsych
      @MrsSchoolPsych  3 роки тому

      Hi Margaret,
      You would still need to get your masters in school psychology and then your credential. Unfortunately, you can't use your school counseling degree to practice as a school psych.

    I just want to know, if a School Psychologist is able to work in a rehabilitation center, especially for those people who are addicted to illegal drugs.

    • @MrsSchoolPsych

      Hi Noriel!
      No, school psychologist work more in education. I believe there are counselors who specifically focus on helping those with drug addictions.
