I watched your video while back. Today was my last day as a SPED teacher and the first day as a school psychologist candidate. I'll be starting the Ed. Specialist program this fall.
Thank you for the video. Your videos have helped me learn alot about the field. I am in undergrad right now but do plan on applying to a school psychology master's program when I am finished. The information you share has played a role in that decision:)
Summary of what has been explained: 1. Get a bachelor degree in related field i.e psychology/ child education but you can also proceed with different background only if you finish prerequisite courses 2. Decide your degree or program.. a specialist-level degree program OR a doctorate degree 3. A 1 year long supervised internship 4. Certificatied license
Thank you for your videos, every video is very concise and informative! I am applying for the school psychologist program and need to write a letter of intent. Do you have a tip? I already went through a doctorate in music and have been working with kids for 20 years teaching piano privately and in groups (currently I also am teaching as an adjunct professor at the college level). When I was applying to all my grad.programs an audition was required instead of essay/letter of intent, so I'm not sure of the format or what exactly the faculty would be looking at (since I haven't come from the psychology field or a classroom teaching).
I am finishing up my Bachelors in Psychology,. Returning to school at my age was a tough decision, definitely wish I would have done things sooner but I suppose there is a reason for everything.
This video was so helpful! One question, after getting a bachelors degree and going on to grad school, is the specialist degree in place of a masters degree or did you also get a masters degree?
to practice in most states, you either need a master's with extra credentials or a specialist degree (which is higher than a master's and takes place of one). it can be confusing because some doc programs provide a master's along the way but you can think of the specialist degree as something in between a doc and master's degree.
For my school psych program I believe people that had a GPA under a 3.0 were required to get the GRE test. Other programs require everyone to get the GRE. Depends on the school. Experience for sure! Or a bachelors degree in education is awesome!
I’d recommend doing the GRE test and having experience in ABA or special education. Some programs in some states don’t require any of that and not all states require a nasp approved program to become licensed.
Thank you everyone! I worked as a behavioral therapist, preschool teacher aide and nanny for awhile so I think that’s pretty good experience! Just have to study hard for my GRE :)
Hi! I just began my graduate program for School Psychology and I would say that while grades and gpa are important, they really value related experience such as working with children and in schools especially working with diverse students and student with disabilities. I had a year long internship with a school psychologist during my undergrad and that really helped! Also, get strong letters of recommendations!
Hello thanks for your great channel .. I am 18 i wannna study psychology and i love it , reading its books ., i have a lots of dreams in future ,working with children .. but i found a lots of people who believed that psychology is not a good choice you might regret and with no money .. I am really confused, i dont know what to do!
Hi, so how many years total of education did it take to complete your Ed. S degree, including the undergraduate years? Is it 4 to get your bachelors + 3 for your Ed. S, for a total of 7 years?
it depends! are you interested in becoming a school psychologist? If so, you'll have to pursue a specialist degree. you could see if any of the credits can transfer though!
I have a master's + certificate of advanced graduate studies (CAGS) which is equivalent to an EdS. If I had a choice, I would probably choose an EdS but they're basically the same! The most important thing is to check whether you can practice in your state after completing your program.

Thank you for posting this! What if we didn’t have a high GPA in college? Is there anything we can do to strengthen our application for grad school?
experience!!

Typically, yes but some people get their bachelor’s sooner or later depending on their circumstances. EdS is 3 years including internship 😊
I have masters in mental health counseling degree. Should I apply EDS?

Do you have your masters degree or Eds? Or do you have both? Which degree would you recommend?
