I agree!! Many days I spend in my office writing reports, but I try to go in the classrooms and spend time there so I'm apart of the whole school culture and not just special education. Kids now see me in the hall and call me by name and say hi. It took me by a huge surprise that I don't get to spend as much time with kids as I would like because I was a teacher for 6 years before becoming a psych.

Yeah it's very different and I think a lot of people don't realize how face-time with students isn't as common as you'd think. I love hearing about psychs who were teachers first though! It makes a lot of sense to make that change. Thanks for watching!

Hello! Just wanted to say your video really helped putting things into perspective. I’m contemplating between school psych or maybe going more of an LPC route. The internet has a bit of conflicting information, and I just wanted some clarity on weather or not school psychs can firstly diagnose and provided therapy for mental illness, and it seems that a majority of the work is spent on assessments for special education and not actually providing therapy. I really thought I would gain a lot of one-on-one time with students because it’s the therapy aspect I’m more attracted to in becoming a psychologist. Thank you for providing things to contemplate before I make this decision, it’s really helpful!

I'm glad you found this helpful! I think it'll really depend on the district your find yourself in. If one-on-one with students is a priority, counseling may be a better fit. You're more likely to see that as a part of the role. School psychologists also don't diagnose students in schools. They work with teams to identify which areas they are eligible for special education services, but those are educational classifications and don't necessarily translate to official diagnoses.

I am from Algeria I have a master’s degree in school psychology. Can I authenticate my degree and work abroad?

That's a great question! I imagine it would depend largely on the content from your classes and how it translate to where you want to practice.

Thank you for the information. Is it true that school psychologists have summers and holidays off?

They generally do! There's some variation across states and districts. But school psychologists are usually on the same schedule as teachers and students. Sometimes they do evaluations over the summer, but that also depends on the district.

Hello! I'm currently completing my internship in NYC and I was surprised by the limited amount of time I get to spend to one-on-one with students. I was hoping to do more counseling than testing.

Yeah it really depends on the school/district you're in! I'd love to be somewhere where a counseling caseload is a part of my role.

There are masters and specialist degrees in school psychology! If you've been out of school more than 5 years (I think that's usually the timeframe), they may not allow you to waive courses from your masters. But Masters/Specialist programs are generally 3 years (2 years of coursework and a 1-year internship). You can check out NASP's website to see the Specialist and Doctoral programs in school psychology www.nasponline.org/standards-and-certification/graduate-program-approval-and-accreditation/program-approval/approved-programs
